One of the best interpretations I have heard of this enigmatic final symphony from Shostakovitch, superbly played under expert direction by the Kolner Philharmonie, a WDR triumph!

Il Maestro Andris Poga ha saputo cogliere -meglio di tanti altri - il senso di questa enigmatica e drammatica Sinfonia del "Secolo Breve" che è "il racconto" della sua vita, in cui il grande Shostakovich fa risuonare "citazioni musicali didattiche" di Rossini , del Tristan und Isolde e di Mahler , insieme ad "autocitazioni" delle sue sinfonie nn. 5 e 7 (ultime battute dei timpani) con ricordi della musica popolare russa , ma della "sua Russia" che , a scanso di equivoci , non era quella di Stalin o dei suoi nipotini di oggi , quei criminali tiranni di questi drammatici giorni . Grazie Maestro Poga di avercelo ricordato ; onore e lodi a questa meravigliosa Orchestra di musicisti davvero bravi-bravi e con un 1° violino semplicemente "perfetto" .
The form of the symphony is peculiar. Shostakovich said that in the Scherzo you must awake the interest of the listener. This symphony however has no Scherzo. Then he said "Composer must know the time when he has to be great". I think the first part is the most interesting, rest of the work is just meditation.
