You have captured the noise the Merlin Engine generates beautifully. I was a small boy in the suburbs of wartime London who played in the garden and warned mum when the noise was not from a Merlin - it is very nostalgic.

It's strange how a gentle curve of the wing can make a machine so gorgeous to look at. We are so simple minded really. Anything with curves turns our heads. Glad that it does too :)

Strange how the Spitfire's eliptical wings mirror that other iconic weapon in the legends of english armour, the longbow. I was born not long after the war and grew up revering the Spitfire and Hurricane pilots of whom Churchill spoke so memorably.

What a wonderful film. What a wonderful plane.
If I may please comment on a couple of points made in this thread.
The Spitfire never had an Allison engine; that was indeed the North American P51 Mustang. The Mustang's performance was improved enormously when the Royal Air Force, which flew Mustangs, fitted one with a Rolls Royce Merlin engine; the engine that powered the Spitfire and the Hurricane. The USAAF then ordered Merlin engines for its Mustangs, built under licence by Packard.
And the origin of the name is a bit prosaic. The RAF wanted to call it the Shrew, but the Chairman of Vickers Engineering, the company that financed the development of the plane, insisted that tis name be changed to 'Spitfire' in honour of his daughter whom he said was a spitfire. (A person, especially a girl or woman, who is of fiery temper and easily provoked to outbursts). Quite apt I think.

    Its incredible sound
-to hear it in your living room, go to "Spitfire Emporium"
-it is a nostalgic sound, though I find it haunting in my own way
I live in Uk, and when I hear a spit overhead
(you always hear it long before you see it)
it stops me in my tracks as I look up
to this magnificent aircraft, shielding the sun from my eyes
-but sadly the young walk on, heads down
not aware of the history above them,
and why they walk so free

Don't know if I'd call it THE best fighter aircraft of WWII, but certainly ONE of the best along with the P-51, F6F Hellcat, Japanese Zero, FW 190, and many others. In my opinion the best looking; can't beat that elliptical wing for esthetic beauty.

Merlin Engines were used in many 'planes from the Fighters (Spitfire/Hurricane/Mustang...) to the Bombers (Lancaster./Mosquito....). Spitfires are beautiful planes but the workhorses never got the recognition. The P-51 was a wife, as was the Hurricane; The Spitfire was the Pin-up. You had one you lusted for, but, the one who looked after you was somewhat plainer, but no less effective!

@Siberian68 Actually it was very good, but it lacked high altitude performance because of the Allison engine. It was a totally indigenous American design at the request of the British, but it was also adopted by the USAAF. Once the Merlin was added in place of the Allison, it really reached its true potential as one of the greatest fighters of the war.
The Spit will always be my favourite, though.

@hustlergoon About 15 yrs ago I was driving to pick up a girl. I've a convertible. It was summer. I heard an unmistakeable sound.... The hair on the back of my neck went up & I pulled over to the side of the road. About 500 ft up, DIRECTLY overhead, was a Spit, complete w/ the fairings for the cannons intact. It was the first one I'd seen flying. I later learned it was a privately owned Mk XVI with the Packard-built Merlin.
The girl was unimpressed. I think I only saw her once more.

The Spitfire had no bad viewing angle. It reeked of elegance. Before the battle of Britain the Germans dismissed it as a "toy". This toy airplane became the terror of the Luftwaffe. Seeing those elliptical wings flash by made more than one Luftwaffe pilot need a change of underwear.

If a person in mechanically savvy enough, it is probably less expensive to produce an exact replica from raw materials than it is to purchase one that is already flying. The required combination of skills today, however, is probably very rare indeed.
