It blows my mind that they kept referring to this as a “disease” and blaming tryptophan. This was a poisoning. Tryptophan was not the cause. The substance in the tryptophan caused it. As soon as they realized there was a 2nd case, why didn’t they immediately compare the brands, and test the bottles each patient had? Finally at 34:30 it says researchers contacted the victims to find out what brand they had been taking. The video says this was “weeks after” this had started. Should have done this immediately.
That was my first question when the 2nd victim was found. And why no tests on all the bottles of supplements they were taking. And why not compare the brand names of the victims. I would have done it differently.
It's to do with the way this doco presents the info. We know it's tryptophan very early; what we don't see are the many other equally plausible theories put forward, the many other factors in common with the patients (they're all women around the same age, for instance, and it could have been something which caused the insomnia that LED to the use of the tryptophan), or the process by which things were ruled out. This actually happened incredibly fast for a study and discovery of the actual contaminant.
It is a disease though. Any disorder of structure or function is a disease. If you are not in "good health" you have a disease. The type of disease was due to poisoning.
In Germany there has been an "E" committee for many decades which focused on OTC and herbal supplements to make sure that they are safe. The USA needs to do the same.
The US Government tried to do just that! But the natural dietary supplement companies put up a large aggressive lobby to stop it!! Through the agressive fear-mongering TV, etc Adverts, intense gov't lobbying, they implied that the gov't wanted to take away their vitamins! Absurd notion! Yet, it succeeded, public was outraged and supported the companies that didn't want to be regulated! The Gov't felt huge public, etc pressure to stop and abandon their helpful new law to regulate! People can be ignorant! Human Safety has to take priority over lobbying!
Unfortunately we have a lot of people in the US who don't believe that any business should be regulated in any way. They sure will gripe when they get ripped off, but cannot connect the two pieces.
I took Losartan for years. At two separate times in 2018 my pharmacy notified me that my bottle of Losartan was from a batch that was contaminated (with jet fuel) and made in the Phillipines. The contamination had cancer causing ingredients. I was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer named Muscinous. My concern about the current drive to make our prescriptions in the US less expensive is manufacturing in other countries who may have issues with lack of inspection or the like.
Cheap meds don't affect quality look at the UK with the NHS I don't pay anything up front I pay tax but it's a lot less than the us and supplements are regulated here just like medicine
@@Sierraomega1991 Do you not pay for your prescriptions? I pay all my taxes, I'm a private patient for my dental care because the NHS waiting list is 4 yrs. I still have to pay for my prescriptions. I have to pay for each item individually even if the doctor gives me one green prescription form.
I was working at a natural food coop in 1989. I had the supplements section. I remember people clamoring for the stuff after it was yanked. Great to hear the explanation for this now.
I always list the supplements I take, to give the doctor. Just fyi. Name, doseage, size of portion. I check with Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins, and one other great source I can't remember! 🤦♀ Sometimes I look at other sources ... it's amazed me that so many doctors have created websites with half-as*ed advice. I've found one doctor tho, I like, when I backchecked on him I found out (among other things) that he'd graduated first in his class at med school. This only takes a few minutes on the 'Net.
@@veramae4098 It's not convenient to the "health" industry that people get healthy naturally. I believe this was designed to scare people off from trusting the use of natural supplements. See, it hurts them where is most vulnerable for them: their huge pockets (that comes from keeping people sick).
I had a very similar proplem ,white blood count continuing to climb, seen a blood specialist every 2 mouth to monitor while I got sicker and sicker. One night I sat up at 2amfrom a sound seep and said it's my pain medication. I spoke with my specialist and she did not believed my dream. As test I told her we should change this med and she allowed this to please me. Within 2 mouth my white count had fallen greatly to the high side of normal and continued to fall to normal. I think this surprised a lot of people what ever made up that pill had something in it that my body found toxic and turned my amune system against me.

Scary thing is, in the US the supplement market still isn't regulated to this day (2021) and they've had other incidents. I can't exactly remember all the details but I do remember reading about an incident during the early 2010s that people were poisoned by green tea extract supplement that either contained arsenic or lead. Things really need to change, nothing that we consume should be allowed to slip through bureaucratic loopholes and end up killing or sickening people.
I was taking a supplement and turns out when I switched stores that I was buying it from the lack of any real quality control in the market meant the product I believed I was getting was counterfeit leading to me developing acute liver failure.... We really need to get supplements more regulated
my brother got into the green tea craze. So its good for you, more is better, and he drank a lot of it, until his kidneys began show distress. He stopped drink the green tea, and the kidney issue cleared up. (as for me, I have ckd due to a rare kidney disease. And I never drank the stuff.)
I feel like the first half could have been shortened to just a few sentences...... Filling time by stating the obvious...... Also, I feel like a contamination issue isn't an "outbreak" of a disease.....
It sad how you see people suffer from these horrible disease and they die it just show how short life can be and how we much appreciate as much as we can
Half way thru and I'm thinking why aren't they checking the bottles of tryptophan, the batch numbers, the contents? See if the connection is the actual product and not just the amino acid. I'm frustrated at this point. YES FINALLY almost at end of show they look at which bottles the victims used and the manufacture process. A company in Japan using raw tryptophan from a bacterial process and genetically tinkering with it were finally to blame.

It’s not legal here yet due to testing not being completed, but there is a treatment. It’s a big deal and pretty expensive but it works. There’s a Facebook group that will get you the right thing and dosage. My baby was within hours of death, 6 seizures in an hour and a half every time he fell asleep. 3 months of really painful shots later, he’s a very happy, healthy, chunky boi. I’m actually shocked he doesn’t even seem to have any lasting brain damage, he was falling over when he turned his head, could barely use his back legs, and his eyes were all messed up but now he’s completely fine and not on any meds at all. His blood work wasn’t wonderful but he was really sick as a baby when I got him as a foster and presumably has some inbreeding so it’s not all that surprising. When 'just fibromyalgia' is mercury poisoning from vaccines and fillings and other stuff try removing it. Iodine drops and chromium picolinate (bluebonnet is 30 % better for me)and much later I added vanadyl sulfate-20 and improved it more. Of a 3 drop Trace brand recommendation I took a dropper full in water. The next morning I was at 20 or 25% reduced pain. Only 12 hours of relief, so I dosed 2x daily, all at 7 drops and a cap of chromium. That got me to zero pain by about day 10. I was not able to work down to 4 drops 1x daily until about month 7 or 8. This should wreck my Thyoid but it got me off that thyroid med or my intermittent fasting killed that parasite. I could walk 10 yards, now I go hiking. I had near tears to get up mornings and now I rarely remember that. Another great detox is Floressence tea 2x daily 3 or 4 months. Make with water that didn't touch plastic or Floride and refrigerate. . See letters in the back of the book The Essiac Report...shocking what symptoms it reversed including my Lupus when GMOS and pesticides were dropped, plus a 6 week sever keto diet to kill the Lupus parasite. My friend did this all in the same 6 weeks and was cured according to blood test and symptoms at day 42. Sleep well by day 14. We had both been at the spontaneous falling stage. The mercury poisoning shocks were gone week 3 or 4 I think. But that was 20 years ago. The proper iodine use is paint the red one (Lugols) on your stomach in a 5 by 10 inch rectangle every morning until it is not slurped up by your body by evening. Then skip for 2 or 4 weeks. Floressence tea gently removes pesticides and heavy metals. Do it yearly for the same 3 months because you still have the same life. God Bless

This happened in 1989, this post should have included when. At least post that in the description. Currently we are dealing with the coronaviruse. Post about that.
I remember when this happened. I was 19 or 20 at the time, and occasionally taking tryptophan for sleep. It worked well, and I was disappointed when it was withdrawn from the market due to a manufacturing error. (This was suspected even way back when.). It’s interesting to view this tragedy in light of some more current “treatments”…how many victims is “too many”? I guess it depends on how much money is to be made/lost.
I was convinced tryptophan was pulled from the marketplace because it was helpful for insomnia. It could be found without a prescription which was a clue that the medical field was going to control any "drug" they couldn't give or withhold.
I remember this happened when I was really little. I was 5 years old but I paid attention to the news even back then. But I didn’t understand everything, so I thought tryptophan was always poison. My parents were surprised when they mentioned the natural tryptophan in turkey and I said I’d thought that was a dangerous chemical. They were surprised I remembered the tainted tryptophan.
Kathy Myers That one happened a year before I was born. Though it wasn’t the Tylenol itself...it was the cyanide someone put in it. (The perp STILL hasn’t been caught from that, BTW...)
Robert Gardea Nah, my parents just made sure I watched the news at an early age unless a story had graphic stuff that wasn’t age-appropriate. Most medical stuff I could handle though. I’m not sure exactly but I got my first kids’ epidemiology book probably 4 years afterwards.
This is old... L-Tryptophan is back on the market in the US and has been for years (since 2005). One manufacturer in Japan was producing L-Tryptophan with genetically modified bacteria, but contamination resulted in production of D-Tryptophan, an optical isomer of L-Tryptophan.
*XX* "would of" *XX* It's "would have'" or "would've" (the latter being oft mistaken for the nonsensical "would of", by children and the under-educated).
I totally agree, it’s driving me nuts watching this. I keep saying “test the product, test the product’. It’s not until 75% into the video that they start to talk about doing that testing. When you hear the statement “to increase the yield, the manufacturer tinkered with some of the genes” it really does get scary. 🐿🙂

Should be taken off the counter. My mom had survived the effects of this poisoning but she was riddled with serious symptoms from taking this and was in touch with other survivors. You don't take a supplement that has been used for a decade and all of a sudden start dieing from it unless something different is put in to that supplement!
This is a very old story, it happened in 1989, over 30 years ago. Now we know what happened and we know L-Tryptophan is not the culprit. L-Tryptophan has been back on the American market since 2005. Keep in mind that the Japanese manufacturer produced L-Tryptophan with genetically modified bacteria and the contamination resulted in the production of D-Tryptophan which is an optical isomer of L-Tryptophan.
Actually, it _was_ the culprit. More specifically, the contaminant called "peak E" and since 2001 identified as 1,1′-ethylidenebis[l-tryptophan] was the culprit. The terrible effects appear to be an allergic reaction to that contaminant, explaining why not everybody was suffering so badly.
Hi Bill. I was so excited to see your story here because I was still living in Albuquerque at the time & heard of your role in this discovery. I saved my own bottle of rarely used L-trytophan as a souvenir when I moved back to California, before finally tossing it out.

When they said supplements I immediately knew it was the eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome outbreak that is associated with the consumption of L-tryptophan supplements.
Because there's no proof. there have been cases of EMS associated with L-tryptophan supplements - from the Japanese firm and from other unrelated firms - that weren't contaminated with the contaminant that was thought to be linked with EMS. there were also cases from unknown sources and one case of someone eating too many cashew nuts that contain tryptophan naturally. No one really knows what caused it, the first theory was the contaminated batches from a Japanese company that changed its filtration method by reducing the activating charcoal used for filtration by half, but it doesn't explain other occurrences that happened before and after the big outbreak. That and the fact that L-Tryptophan exploded in popularity right before the big outbreak points to L-tryptophan itself- either alone or in combination with some other contributing factor - being the culprit of EMS in susceptible individuals.
I bet the “cooperative” Japanese company probably paid off the investigators to find nothing. If you isolate a chemical compound, you can tell exactly what it is by doing mass spectrometry and gas chromatography. Why didn’t they tell us what the chemical was???!!! That would be a simple test. Also, they didn’t test the tryptophan sample for biological activity for Bacterial or viral DNA. They could have amplified the DNA in the sample. They should’ve done those two easy tests, but conveniently decided not to. This sounds almost like a bad vaccine reaction, where the body overreacts. They should have done chelation and a blood transfusion right away.
@@hannahzion9158 well that sounds like about right Hannah. Because of this company they pulled out all the l.tryptophan off the shelves in America.was waiting for the name of the company they didn't even show it on the bottle. and I wonder if this particular batch was only made to be sold in America? hence we would be the only one picking up this ems.. I can't believe no other please in Japan ever had the same reaction like we got in America with EMS so it sounds like a cover-up

@@pixibelle3282 i believe they said their testing was inconclusive. maybe something like the current drug removal where outside the body there is not thing dangerous but once in the body chemical reaction produces same drug they use to induce cancer in lab rats.

So, genetic engineering (tampering) with the bacteria in the manufacturing process which was not for the purpose of making a better product but as stated for the benefit of profit. Can we not see a correlation with the genetic engineering and genetic modification of our food products? And we as consumers are not allowed to choose conventionall vs. gmo at the market in the form of labeling.
You can choose not to buy GMO. Just read the labels on the products you buy. Those that say Non-GMO are advertising as such to make more money than those that do use GMO products. There are plenty of laws restricting labeling. If you don't trust what you read, do not buy the product.
They could have just examined the L-tryptophan pills right away if those were tainted without going through door-to-door to find out if there are other victims.

This is not genetic modification. Humans have done this for millennia via selective breeding. It is about “natural” supplements taken at 1,000s of times their natural level - and thereby no longer natural. This can occur with Vitamins D, E, A and K. If you take too much of these fat- soluble supplements, they accumulate and cause damage. Over-the-counter supplements are not safe if you take them at massive doses. Even water, taken to the extreme, can be deadly.
This video was not about genetic modification but rather a change in a process for producing a product. But you are right to be worried. Just be careful what you put in your mouth.

My heart goes out to the victims. It seems if this was produced in Japan, it was probably in countries other than the USA. Did any other countries experience similar symptoms? Edit: I looked it up and basically what they have discovered is some people are “sensitive” to something. There’s a case study of EMS from 2009. So it’s still out there, it’s just not an epidemic because only “sensitive” people are susceptible.
It was made in the US using raw materials imported from Japan. Quite possibly the US manufacturers were less diligent about cleaning and filtering their raw materials because of the lax food safety standards regulating the food and supplement market in the USA as compared to other countries (including Japan).
@@jwenting And there's also the fact that the supplement market is unregulated. They were intentionally excluded from being regulated by the FDA through bipartisan efforts. And ppl wonder why I brace for impact when I hear a bill is "bipartisan."
What about fillers and other ingredients even in the capsules? Seem to me the first question should have been were they all using the same brand or a brand from the same manufacturer. Haven’t heard this addressed thus far.
Read an article about supplements in the New Yorker years ago that really shocked me! No regulation!!! And I'm assuming this is still true. How can our government be so stupid!!! Don't take over the counter supplements. Period.

It blows me away that they still have no idea how to deal with this or how the contaminates cause so much destruction. If anything it spotlights the dangers of genetically modified organisms being used and going into our food and medicines
@CJ If you think breeding plants and animals for specific traits is the same thing as removing DNA from one creature and putting in another. You should think again. And if you believe the use genetic modification of plants to survive tons of Roundup is a safe practice there is no hope for you. I am not a fan of untested supplements. But, I am no fan of the lies that make up so many "scientific" research papers either. If you did not know, 40% of all scientific papers done over the last 20 years are non-reproducible. And the French researchers proved that is exactly what the papers showing the safety of Roundup are. 90 days is no substitute for lifetime monitoring of rats exposed to carcinogens.
@Suspicious Ned Flanders genetic engineering is direct manipulation of genetic code... it bypasses all of the safeguards and limits that are found in nature and that cannot be bypassed with breeding.

I’m only half way through but I’m wondering why they didn’t collect the pill bottles of the stricken women and test the pills. They may have even found that those who were sick were taking the same brand or even the same lot #. I’ll have to watch the rest.
Um. Almost every time I go to the doctor's, I am asked to list all the medications, vitamins, supplements I am taking. Why did it take six months to notice that these victims were taking the same supplement?
I am surprised that the drug was not immediately assessed for toxin. Most over the counter drugs don't always have exactly what is in them. For example the amount might be different too little or too much.
Normal toxicology tests test for specific toxins. You have to know what you are looking for, and test for that. In this case, they did not know what they were looking for.
Labels dont matter- they are EASY to fake, what do you think?? they are just printed off on a machine with whatever they put in the template, and if they FORGED a CARB certification on laminated flooring and shipped it to Lumber Liquidators in the USA which sickened scores of people, well, a little paper label on a bottle is a piece of cake to forge or fake too! It's as easy to change as an email or text document! Managers at the flooring plant in China ADMITTED they faked the CARB certificate th-cam.com/video/dWu4gO9ZhKs/w-d-xo.html

Exactly...the FDA regulates prescriptions and most of the drugs that people buy over the counter in the US, but "natural supplements" don't fall under regulations...and they can be very dangerous.
Plenty of people get sick and die from prescription medications too, as well as food; A multistate Escherichia coli outbreak linked to romaine lettuce grew by 4 deaths and 25 cases, according to an update today from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC has now confirmed 197 cases in 35 states and 5 deaths in this outbreak. Three more states-Arkansas, North Carolina, and Oklahoma-reported sick people since the CDC's previous update on May 16. The four new fatal cases occurred in Arkansas (1), Minnesota (2), and New York (1). Eighty-nine people have been hospitalized since the outbreak began in March, including 26 people who developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious kidney complication. According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), this is the largest E coli outbreak in a decade.
Most all of your vitamin supplements would fall under natural supplements. For those of us who have severe vitamin deficiencies have no choice but to take said vitamins.
This will be the age of lab created biological weapons tested on target populations. There is no other reason for so many mysterious diseases in a culture that considers itself developed. And I cannot forget how many microbiologists have been dropping dead over the past three or four years under mysterious causes, accidents, suicide, etc......I am not the only one asking such questions; there have been multiple articles written about this. Yet doctors never know what they are dealing with? Can it be that they are dealing with modified bacteria weaponized in Labs by genetically modified organisms for which Humanity has no immunity?
L'tryptophan nearly killed me as well. At first it was hallucinations, seeing people who weren't really there, etc. Then other things began to affect my body. _It never at any time put me to sleep like it was marketed for!_ I honestly felt like I was dying. I stopped taking them and began to feel a lot better and eventually then felt like my old self. This stuff is not for human beings, in my opinion. Why do they market this poison anymore???
L-tryptophan is found in many of the foods we consume, and without it you would die. It's what people who possess basic general knowledge call an _essential amino acid._
L tryptophan is actually an essential amino acid found naturally in certain foods. In your body/brain it turns into serotonin which is obviously very important for both physical and mental health. It’s when humans start trying to make it artificially that you run into trouble with excipients which are potentially dangerous.
It wasn't the Tryptophan, it was the contaminant! Get it? Do you know how many people die from prescribed drugs and medical mistakes every year in the country?
I live & am from. New Mexico. This is the first I have heard about this. I have and never will, take things like that. I just don’t do things like that. I think people need to be a lot more careful & Smarter with what they put into their Bodies. Gotta always be safe. Then be sorry.
This happened in fall 1989, only in the USA! Since then, tainted tryptophan hasn't made any cases. Luckily. 🙏 And in Europe, where supplements are very controlled, no cases at all. 👌
It would be great if the FDA took control over supplements. If they do not, it would be super great if USA drug prescription plans would allow doctors to write scripts to allow the needed supplements, verified by blood work, to be covered and provided by licensed pharmacists.
Really They have allowed Big Pharma to kill millions ! They do not test the drugs that big Pharma sells! They make their billions, and pay out for a few dead and dying ! Big business and big Pharma have made people sick from processed foods and drugs that cure nothing! Great great FDA money talks!
I do not trust the FDA. But I agree it would be good if supplements were held to a consistent standard, tested randomly, & the results available easily to the general public. Many of us cannot afford Rx man-made medicines, or cannot tolerate various ingredients in them, so we buy supplements that [we hope] are closer to natural. Yes it would be wonderful if Dr 's could/would prescribe supplements! But so few doctors even know about them --- & to be fair, there is a TON of supplements out there to learn about; I doubt anyone really knows all about each one. German doctors can prescribe both ( man-made pharmaceuticals or natural products), but I don't know how their health care system is set up.
I had a laptop like the one at 16:13 in middle school circa 1998 (and it was old then)! I love all the old technology in here, especially having worked in hospital informatics before.
I believe the early tests found a bacterium a Japanese firm genetically altered to get more ingredient cheaper. So they do have this bacterium, no? Why is it not possible to insist that no bacteria are genetically messed with in the making f tryptophan? Rather than ban the product?
There's no other way to get tryptophan cheaply. But you don't even know what tryptophan is let alone how it's produced do you? Then keep your mouth shut and go the fuck back to school.
It's not the bacterium that's the problem, that's just the medium that produces the chemical. It was the process of extracting the chemical from the bacteria that was changed.

If you adjust the playback speed to 1.5 this is much more bearable. These TV shows had to fill a time slot and they would draw out these stories as long as possible. They had to sell powdered soup, soaps, canned foods, shampoos, and SUPPLEMENTS.
Do your research! As a consumer we have to empower ourselves to take a proactive approach to what we put in our bodies. 'Supplements' are a booming, money sponging scheme. They are not regulated. Most of those sold are completely useless; they tout extraordinary doses that our bodies simply excrete bc we can't absorb them, many vitamins require the presence of other vitamins/minerals in order to absorb or work efficiently within our bodies, quality matters... it's almost criminal what they get away with. Do your research and learn about what you're putting in your body. Many are perfectly fine and even beneficial but are often more expensive (for good reason).
Yes, but medications like Darvoset and Darvon were on the market for a long while then they were recalled and not replaced. It isn't only OTC meds that get recalled.
NOT A DECEASE!!! AN ALLERGIC REACTION TO BAD MEDICATION! IT NEARLY KILLED ME IN 1999! NOBODY KNEW HOW IT COULD, I HAVE HAD SEVERE FIBRO MYALGIA SINSE THEN!!!
L-Tryptophan was considered a "miracle" suppliament, in the 90's. My mother (in her 60's), had been taking this, at the recommendation of a friend. She had had rheumatic fever as a child, and suffered from a heart murmer due to this. This suppliament made her very sick, affecting her heart, and weakening her. She was never the same after that.
It is interesting that the FDA wasnt in on this as soon as the commonality was noted; if anyone has the equipment and brains to analyze stuff in a hurry, it's them.
Hahaha...the FDA puts hundreds of poisons on the market yearly. 106,000 die each year from adverse reactions to PRESCRIPTION drugs. 2.5 million people suffer injury from prescriptions. We don't hear about that. We hear about a few dozen people who suffer from supplement problems. Get your nutritional supplements from Canadian manufacturers. They have stringent standards for the processing and manufacturing of supplements.
I was severely allergic to Tripeline, I think it is the same. Way back in 1999 I thought I was dying and the doctors could not understand my reaction to it. I developed. FIBRO MYALGIA and have suffered ever sinse. 😢
Contrary to the popular belie that cooked turkey contains an abundance of tryptophan (with this being used as an explanation for sleepiness following consumption of the meat), the tryptophan content in turkey is typical of poultry.
I also couldn't understand why they didn't test the supplement or where it came from. It was my first thought test the pills
I totally agree. And why so many added chemicals? Not necessary.
@ProfCheryl true.

For every nutritional supplement that causes an issue, there are probably 100,000 issues from drug problems - including death. Look it up.

I live with pain exactly like this every day of my life. It takes everything I have not to scream for hours. The doctor tells me it's just Fyromylgia.
Fibromyalgia is simply another term for, "we don't know what the hell is wrong with you!'
God Bless

When they said supplements I immediately knew it was the eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome outbreak that is associated with the consumption of L-tryptophan supplements.
I wonder was there a class action law suit against the Japanese company ?

The Night Owl Corner so true!
We're About to Find out 3/26/2020
@Suspicious Ned Flanders Genetic modification is not the same as selective breeding.
This video was not about genetic modification but rather a change in a process for producing a product. But you are right to be worried. Just be careful what you put in your mouth.

@CJ If you think breeding plants and animals for specific traits is the same thing as removing DNA from one creature and putting in another. You should think again.
And if you believe the use genetic modification of plants to survive tons of Roundup is a safe practice there is no hope for you.
