    Unfortunately, they failed to tell the true story and give Dr. McNamara the credit she deserves for discovering the cause as West Nile Virus. Initially, the CDC was unwilling to listen to her or even take her phone calls since she is “just a veterinarian.”

    I'm one of the lucky ones. I contracted West Nile in 2003 on a cross country road trip that brought me through Mississippi. I returned home to Texas and about two days later I got viciously sick, never experienced that kinda sick before and I knew something was seriously wrong when I couldn't move my neck without electrifying pain shooting through my body. I went to the ER and the doctor speculated it might be West Nile, he did a spinal tap and admitted me to the hospital for a few days...the results came back on day three and yep, it was West Nile. Fortunately I was young and strong and my body was able to fight it off. I came out of it unscathed except for a paranoid fear of mosquitos.

    In July of 2002, I left San Diego and was taking a tour at the Navy Base outside of Memphis. After being there a month or so, hundreds of birds covered the ground and streets on the base. It was as if they fell out of the sky. I believe they called them gackles. For the first couple of days after this had happened, no one said anything. Finally it was like the calvary swooped in collecting them all and sending out bulletins regarding West Nile Virus. Several horses at the nearby navy stables died. After watching this show, it kind of makes me mad. Our children were running all over the place outside, our dogs, I was outside working in my new yard... other than telling us not to touch the dead birds, we weren't told we were potentially in danger until much later when a little boy got it. He was sickly as I recall. Had a medical condition that made his health fragile. When he died we all panicked until the weather cooled off.

    • @amberkat8147
      @amberkat8147 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Grackles? But yeah, they should have warned you. I get that they probably wanted to avoid panic, but not taking action to save lives and letting peoples' kids or other loves ones die is a great way to kill people's loyalty to the country.

      Outside of Memphis? Sounds like you were touring NAS Millington. I'm not sure about 2002, but several years before that - there were A LOT of people at this base. 1 side was active, and the other side was training for all 'Aviation' rates. Meaning, the average age of the area would be between 20-30 years old and physically fit. People who would not normally develop any symptoms from this disease. It makes sense that no one was really worried??

I also had a habit of collecting feathers, and at first I didn't understand why my father wouldn't let collect them anymore since I never cared too much for watching the news. I didn't understand that there was a real danger with my feather collecting until he sat me down and actually MADE me watch one of the updates about this outbreak and I was so terrified that I could get sick too that I actually burned all the feathers I'd collected over the last couple of weeks because he said it would only take a single infected feather to make me sick.

    All these mosquito-borne viruses that have come to the US (West Nile, Chikungunya, Zika) are why I wear long sleeves, socks, and no open toed shoes, even in the hot summer. Even though I'm in the South and we do have mosquito control programs, bites can still happen. If I do get a bite it will be on my hands or arms, somewhere I can see. And even though it sounds paranoid, I always make sure someone else in my family knows if I do still get a mosquito bite. So far so good but at least if something weird were to happen, someone would know to add that to my medical history.

    • @SimonBissell
      @SimonBissell 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Lyme disease is spread by ticks. It is therefore important to wear insect repellent in tick habitats, and properly remove it as soon as it is noticed.
      The classic bullseye rash (erythema migrans) doesn't always appear but is a telltale symptom. Early antibiotics usually result in cure. I was one of the lucky ones who got the rash and on Doxycycline in less than a week.

      I just have to say that I was camping in Maine about 6 years ago and one night I was laying in my tent and I felt something was stuck to my chin (more underneath it) and I tried to scrape it off. I assumed it was just dirt... it was small. The next morning I went to the showers and when I got to the mirror I could see what I thought was a small scab under my chin.. naturally I had to pick it so I pulled out my tweezers and grabbed hold... pulled and realized when it came out it was as a tick. It didn’t look at all like a tic I used to pull off my neighbors dog in South Carolina. Anyhow.. I went on about my camping trip and I developed a bullseye rash. I had no idea what that meant. Well two years later I was diagnosed with fibro. And my Lyme test came back negative. I know I am misdiagnosed but I also don’t think it’s Lyme. I truly wholeheartedly believe that the levels of arsenic that the FDA said was ok to treat town water... affected me. But dang after seeing everyone’s comments I wonder.. maybe I do have a Lyme type issue. I think Fibro is honestly a NOS diagnosis meaning they don’t know what the hell is wrong with you... and your not worth figuring it out. I can say my symptoms are awful. I still work full time and I take care of my family and I push through. But I’m pretty miserable. I have awful biting stinging pains down my right arm and my left leg. Weird. And sometimes when the burning is really bad, both my forearms feel like they are about to deliver gigantic babies. At the top of my spine I a get a huge swollen lump and my heart palpitations are insane. But I say nothing and keep on pushing. No one cares to really figure it out

    Dam that's some big mosquitos. Down south here in Louisiana the mosquitos aren't that big, but we've had ppl with westnile, and our neighborhood ditches are sprayed on a regular basis. We are advised not to have small collections of water cause they prefer that over large amounts of water. If I get bit I spray the bite with alcohol. Our pets have to be given a heart worm vaccine in case they get bit, cause it causes heart worms. I sometimes pore bleach in my ditches. I spray myself with alcohol if I have to go out at night, and I bring my spray bottle of alcohol with me. Mississippi has huge black mosquitos.

    I have always believed that all luggage/baggage of any kind should be fumigated - once they go onto the belt, instead of heading to the unloading dock, they should be passed through an enclosed area where fumigation begins, and then out to the area to be loaded onto the plane. This would also discourage people from trying to sneak in live animals like snakes and turtles, and remove any pest from plants.

    How come we have West Nile vaccines for horses but not humans?

    • @vampoftrance
      @vampoftrance ปีที่แล้ว

      West Nile died off after killing the birds as a host. We exterminated the mosquitoes and West Nile didn't need a vaccine it was short lived. Also people didn't get it so much as birds.

    Right as I just turned 8, in August that summer, I noticed helicopters spraying a mist despite being hundreds of feet high.
    Because it was discussed in the news about the aerial spraying I rushed inside but not before I got a bit itchy on my face. But that was likely psychosomatic as I overheard them discussing the effects of the spraying.
