Its crazy that in HGSS we got the BATTLE FRONTIER, and even a new in-depth minigame made from scratch, the Pokeathalon, and the best iteration of the Safari Zone.
ORAS replaced the Battle Frontier with other custom endgame content, and BDSP didnt have... anything
I don't want Black and White remakes anymore. There's no way in hell we're getting the difficulty system, Pokestar Studios, Black Tower, White Treehollow, or the World Tournament. And since they'll shove the baby-mode exp share into the mix we won't even have the diffuculr battles the game is also known for.

I think Gen 5 remakes could be good. Nintendo seemed upset with game freak after scarlet and violet. I mean they made game freak move back to the main Nintendo office in Kyoto. Look at them taking their time with Z-A. This direction probably came directly from higher ups at Nintendo. I believe good changes are happening within game freak.

I could absolutely Go Off on these games, because I am that Gen 4 superfan these games were "supposed" to be for, but I won't because everything that needs to be said has been a thousand times. I also happen to be an even bigger fan of Gen 5, so to say that I am shaking in my boots about the prospect of THIS happening to my beloved Unova would be a grave understatement.
The crucial part to understand why BDSP failed is to understand why Diamond and Pearl failed. DP are genuinely pretty bad games, with a pitiful Pokédex, lackluster story, awful set pieces, a pathetic evil team with no identity, no postgame to speak of, and a plethora of performance issues and bad quality of life decisions. BDSP chooses to replicate, without exaggeration, each and every single one of these failings, instead of take an opportunity to rectify them - even when the blueprints to do so were already laid out for them in Platinum. Even the performance issues and quality of life decisions that WERE addressed, such as battle speed and HMs, aren't fixed in their entirety; battles now suffer plasticine models with no personality and unimaginative animations, and the HM replacement is totally immersion breaking, not to mention the brand new issues due to the implementation of 360 movement (the Candice Gym glitch in particular comes to mind). Then they choose to add modern mechanics with no regard for how they simply Do Not Belong Here? The XY affection mechanic is forced and breaks open the difficulty, the EXP Share is forced and breaks open the difficulty, and the follow mechanics are laughable in a "Oh my God this is actually how far we've fallen", kind of way.
As I said, I'm not gonna go on and on because there are dozens of video essays and comments elsewhere to explain in-depth the tragedy that BDSP was. I think BDSP has merit for completely brand new players to the series, who can start with a very easy game (at least until Cynthia, but hey, WE survived as kids lmao) without any gimmicks involved. However, I think that even this is still unfortunate, as it is a further reminder of what could have been - children who pick up BDSP as one of their first Pokémon games nowadays have to experience the series through a borderline 1-to-1 poorly made reskin of one of the worst games in the series, rather than a reimagining of a beloved fan favourite that had care and attention put into it to expand upon the ideas presented by the original trio. The difference between Diamond and Pearl, and Platinum, was immense - Looker, scene changes, a superior story, and *actually being able to use Pokémon from the Sinnoh region* - so it's a true shame that the remake we got chose to take nothing from the objectively superior version that MADE Gen 4 the adored generation it is today.

Same. Not taking advantage of Modern mechanics, skipping over giving the gen 4 starters special forms with the new games in BOTH the remakes and PLA, ugh, it really felt like a slap in the face to gen 4 fans. That said, I loved my Chimchar getting power up punch so early on, and it felt like the games had a nice difficulty curve overall. I thought I'd 2 shot a wild geodude with my Chimchar as soon as it learned powerful punch and it defense curl rollout-ed me and 1 shot Chimchar. I know it's weak to Rock, but I've never seen a wild Pokemon do the rollout combo before that and it got me kinda excited for the AI in the game. I did end up dropping the games though, cause I couldn't get over the lack of the Platinum story. I couldn't stop making comparisons and just went back to play that in the end

We shouldn't want new remakes anymore. When ORAS came out, they were by far the worst Pokémon remakes to date in my opinion (note, i am a massive gen3 fan loving both RSE and FRLG, and probably Colosseum and XD too if i owned them, they seem right up my alley). But when BDSP came out they easily took that crown. ORAS tried by making changes that most of which I simply did not enjoy, like complete overhauls of already well established character designs and ruining the difficulty by giving a free Mega Lati halfway into the story, but did introduce neat features like the dexnav and the Delta episode postgame was solid. BDSP on the other hand did not improve on the originals in any way. or change anything at all for that matter. They're just bland nostalgia cashgrabs.

  • @wikiuser92
    @wikiuser92 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +15

I personally like these games. The pros easily overshadow the cons, in my opinion. I liked how colorful these games were and how enjoyable they were to play. And this comes from a person who has also played through Platinum. In my opinion, the biggest improvements of these games were the removed HMs, the Grand Underground, and the greatly improved boss battles.
Those texts describing your Pokémon's feelings during battle have been a thing since Generation VI, where they were tied to the affection mechanic. In these games, they're tied to the friendship mechanic instead. I don't like those friendship haxes, so I kept it under control with herbal medicine.
I actually used that Jirachi in my main team when playing Brilliant Diamond. Felt fun using one.

  • @13CrystalHeart

As a Sinnoh fan, it really sucked that these turned out as lame as they did, tho it can be somewhat excused by it not being their main focus.
But also, I am a Gen5 fan, and honestly, I don't think a faithful BW remake would detract as bad as it was for us getting one with DP. BW is commonly agreed to have one of the best stories in the main series, and stands pretty strong on its own, while DP needed Platinum to be good. BDSP is a decent experience if you have never played Platinum, but Platinum still ended up being the definitive experience.
It also bugs me with the waste of potential, like imagine if we got a DP remake adding elements from Platinum and Legends, that would have been dope.

  • @ninjaoftheocean

Gen 4 was my first intro to pokémon in elementary school, and I’d wanted remakes ever since ORAS, and BDSP felt so legitimately disappointing to the point of disgust. I felt like we missed out on the experience Gen 1-3 kids had with FRLG, HGSS, and ORAS which are in so many people’s top 5 Pokemon games of all time for their innovation, improvements to the originals, and overall care and character that permeate the whole experience. Between the Sevii Islands, the Battle Frontier, the Pokeathlon, Soaring, the Delta episode, all of the previous remakes had flaws but felt like reimaginings of the originals in fresh perfected ways. Sinnoh has always been my first and favorite region, and the underground was nice, but the rest of the game felt like an attempt to “just get a remake out” in a way that was genuinely distasteful, careless, and unfortunately made me resent them entirely

  • @cloudtg462

Gen 4 are my favorite games. I don't hate BDSP just was highly disappointed by them. I really wamted DP in SWSH engine with Dynamax and a Delta Episode for Giratina
But I genuinely think SWSH had such bad reception that Pokemon Company thought extremely faithful and safe would be a better option. Which just baffles me
Like they were so focused on Legends Arceus that they actually neglected to give the Remakes of the generation ask for the most and had the long gap in between the originals to drop a glorified tech demo
I like Legends Arceus but it's definitely a very incomplete game. They focused so much on the catching and that's literally it. The story and characters are boring. The world is empty, the action rpg elements are hella clunky. And it's a prequel not a remake. I would've even been ok if they the DP remakes were the experimental games. As in the used all of the Legends concepts for the Sinnoh remakes. At least we would've had a new experience for modern Sinnoh. But no we got disappointing remakes and an ok at best prequel
Gen 5 is my 2nd favorite. So I have hope BW don't get disrespected for another Legends game

I actually quite quite "chibi" graphics as used in Super Mario RPG or the 2D Zelda games. But in those games, it feels like a deliberate artistic choice rather than a cost-cutting measure made to compensate the lack of development time. Still, I'm glad that Game Freak worked on something new instead of another remake with Legends Arceus instead.
Pokemon remakes are interesting because it fans aren't looking for a faithful recreation of an old game, they want a new experience with the current generation gameplay mechanics, but with the skin of a previous title.

There was still the limit of 493 Pokemon, Used the dex from OG Pearl & diamond, did not make any modifications to the gym leader teams and elite 4 teams, no pss, no friend safari, no natural in game even to get Darkrai {which should be version exclusive w/Cresselia}, Shaymin, Arceus {though I'd let that slide cause of Legends A} or Deoxys, Jirachi, Celebi or Mew, no wild high level Chansey & Blissey, no hidden grottos, no raids, no mega evolution, no 100/200♾use TM's, no HM's, and no wild high level *fully evolved* pokemon, and no game corner/proper minigame arcade, , no new "Paul like" rival that picks the last remaining starter, and serious lack of character customization.

I think these games are a good example of "what is a remake" and "what is a remaster".
Remakes tend to be very different from their original counterpart, with a lot of their code redone down to its base and sometimes with very different gameplay. The Final Fantasy 7 remakes are an extreme example of this, being completely different games with similar plot, characters and locations. Every other pokemon remake up to this point have fulfilled these, "re-imagining" it like you said.
Remasters, on the other hand, tend to just be a more modern version of the already existing game. They tend to have mostly the same code (BDSP has been confirmed to have *a lot* of copied code, they even brought back some old gen 4 bugs) and gameplay, with improvements to graphics and the engine. Skyrim is a good example of a game just getting a new coat of paint, a few new features and being called a remaster.
Also, at least in my case, the new graphics ended up being very uncomfortable to play with. There's a cave north of Jubilife where I was trying to get a specific encounter, and they put fog in there simply because the original also had it, but the constant moving of it when I went up and down the stairs genuinely hurt my eyes and forced me to stop playing.

The reason Heartgold and SoulSilver worked so well is that they took everything that the games had learned up to that point. They not only remade the story of Gold and Silver, but also seamlessly interweaved the plot of Crystal into the games. They also used all the mechanics and designs of Gen 4 into the games.
Compare that with these games. They simply just remade the games. They pretty much ignored all the improvements from Platinum and didn't bother interweaving any of it's story elements. I don't hate the chibi art style, but I understand that a lot of people were hoping to see the same art style from Sword and Shield. It's things like that alienated so many people with these games.

for me Gen 4 has always been extremely FORGETTABLE. Even when taking a long hiatus and trying to replay it. I can't for the life of me remember any of the gym leaders. Whats even worse is the Level format is THE SAME as Gen 2. Making you have to deal with trainers capping out at only level 30 for the ENTIRE 2nd half of the game while yours are long past level 40-50. it just drags on unnecessarily for too long. and the Elite 4 is so brutally difficult that I don't even bother to tackle it with anything lower then a full party of level 90-100 mons. I played through BD and am currently at the Elite 4. I haven't even tried yet. I'm just leveling my entire party to level 100. I've already gotten the national dex by now. I'm not even going to bother completing the game.

I've learnt to love them 💖 At first, I was quite resentful toward BDSP's unreasonable difficult spike, going from light, friendly fun to demonic the second the player steps into the Elite Four with no forewarning to what's to come. It just isn't fair and has rightfully made tons of players just abandon the game. It makes players feel like they've done something wrong, having their team comprised of their favourites or any random shinys the hunters treaded across Sinnoh for *washed* by Cynthia and her overpowered, competitively-built team.
It's only now, with the introduction of Pokémon Home and all the handy, convenient tools introduced in SV do I enjoy challenging the Elite Four and Cynthia since I have access to EVs via the ogre-oustin game and easy breeding, being able to spawn several eggs in my player's picnic basket to find the perfect IV Pokémon I want to port over to my Shiny Pearl copy.
BDSP is really missing such tools, especially frustrating not knowing the monstrous challenge to come.
The lack of Platinum improvements was really disappointing, relegating Candice, Flint and Volkner to their poor original teams

I personally believe that while BDSP have some glaring flaws, they work well enough in my opinion to make them(at least BD, since that's the only one of the pair I played) at least reasonably enjoyable. Also, the Grand Underground will be making several of my challenge playthroughs I do in them far more manageable than if I did those runs in the original Diamond or Pearl games.

I'm an OG Pokemon fan who has played every generation since Gen 1 and Gen 4 has always been my least favorite. The lore & characters are nice and Platinum was a BIG improvement but I never enjoyed playing Gen 4 so I was not looking forward to the remakes. When I played the remakes, I had a better time than I assumed I would but I had no interest playing past than the Elite 4.

Yeah, these games are massive letdowns in every way as a Gen IV fan. I wanted to see Sinnoh in 3D with new features and new designs just like the previous remakes did, not an uglier and worse version of a game I already played.
I know the trade-off is PLA and it's cool GF is trying to evolve the series, but it stills feels very unfinished in a lot of ways and needed a lot of work. It doesn't really take the spot of a real Sinnoh remake.

Diamond was my first pokemon game so I bought brilliant diamond, I loved the nostalgia kick at first but did find myself missing the original games and my most recent gen 4 playthrough was with a copy of the original pokemon Pearl. The OGs do it better, and I am disappointed in BDSP. I did still have fun with them though, and they're nice for an easy playthrough without the slowness of the originals and the annoyance of HM moves

Gen 4 was my favorite gen. So I had high hopes for these remakes. But, it honestly felt like a money grab. Compared to other remakes like UltraSun/Ultra Moon, or ORAS, these remakes just looked like they copy/pasted the originals. I at least wanted a more 3D-ish experience similar to Sword/Shield. I was actually drooling over how Sinnoh would look using the Sword/Shield engine.
And then GameFreak decided to give us all the middle finger.

Gen 4 is my favorite, just loved the region and it's vibes. I was on a break from the series when these came out but came back for legends. Legends got me back into the series and so I picked up Shining Pearl. I had already walked into the title knowing it was not going to be the same type of remakes as the last gens. It's not the remakes I wanted for my favorite gen but I do think they are so faithful to the originals because of Legends coming out so close to them. I would of loved just some of the platinum elements but the things they did change, like getting most of the third version options as soon as badge 2 made team building fun. The art style isn't my cup of tea but I do see what they went for.
All in all, I do find myself suggesting it to newer fans who do not want to shell out 120 bucks for a used DS and copy of the originals.

BDSP are the worst remakes, and the worst Pokémon games. In my honest opinion. I bought them both of course, but I never played past the 4th badge in BD. I couldn’t handle it anymore. Where ORAS added the Delta Episode where you can catch the mythical Deoxys, BDSP brought back the limited time events to catch Shaymin and Darkrai. Why not just have them as quests in the game? Everything about BDSP just pisses me off.

Irrelevant of BDSP’s quality, it’s bad in terms of a remake, a good BDSP remake would have many of the quality of life improvements that Platinum added to Gen 4
It Didn’t help that people were expecting the remake to have all of Platinum’s improvements

I adored Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum growing up. I bought both Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl when they released, as well as Legends Arceus. I haven't touched the former since I got them, whereas PLA is one of my favourite games in the series. I think the jarring graphical change between SwSh and BDSP, coupled with the fact that each of the other remakes add *something* to the experience rather than being 1:1 carbon copies of the original, just dulled the shine for me

The reveal of BDSP looked playable. The released games are unplayable. Even if I try to mod some hurting graphic effects out, it still is not enough. These games should never be played unless they get a GTA Definitive Treatment. Update it to make it at least playable. Why the hell is the bloom even there, the deep sharpness and blurry graphics everywhere, I don't get why anyone could play that, it is really hurting my eyes since day 1 and it's still like that. Even SV looks better, minus the crystallizing evolution thing crap that nobody needs and hurts my eyes, too. And no, I mean not because it looks like sh*t, well, it does, but because it literally hurts.

But I’ll have to be completely honest the fact that it doesn’t include the platinum story line or do/add anything new and that it was too safe was rather boring ngl.

When they first revealed BDSP and I saw it I was shocked at how bad it looked and the person talking in the trailer immediately damage controlled the look and style of the game by using the "faithful recreation" excuse. That doesn't fly here because thats not what we wanted or expected, especially not to the point where it's doesn't even have the Platinum dex or story content. Ponyta is the only fire type if you don't pick Chimchar again. I expected it to look like Sword and Shield since all previous remakes used the engine of the current generation and it sucked cause I really liked Gen 4 back in the day. Hopefully they get Black and White right.

There was no credible reason for both Scarlet and Violet to be released in unplayable condition on day 1 and im still surprised that Pokémon bdsp, sword and shield,Pokémon let's go Pikachu and Evee and Pokémon legends arceus are still getting so much hate. I've been playing the main series Pokémon games since December 25th 2004 and i will not be picking up Pokémon legends Z-A on day 1 release. It will be the very first time where im not interested in a new Pokémon game, and the reason is because of all the issues with both Scarlet and Violet

I don't think this game is as bad as people said it was. There were definitely many bad things about it (getting stuck on corners, no real innovation vs true remake, etc) but a lot of it is overexaggerated. As a whole I still had more fun with BDSP than I did with, say, X and Y. It's probably mostly due to nostalgia for Gen 4, but still... definitely not the worst, definitely not the best.

Like how could they give special new forms for Pokemon from other regions and not give anything to the actual gen 4 starters? That just felt bad after the gen 3 starters got their mega forms and gen 1 got them in X and Y. It's cool that Arceus gave them to a gen 2, 5, and 7 Pokemon, but come on, how long will the gen 4 starters have to wait now?

Tbh, as a gen 5 fan I'm not worried about "what happened" to BDSP happening to BW because BW were actually good games to begin with. As other commenters have mentioned, DP were full of really glaring flaws and an underwhelming story, so replicating that with BDSP made for sn underwhelming game. BW on the other hand are *really good*, so a "faithful" remake will already be better than BDSP.

    • @nintendonerdjoseph

Diamond and Pearl ARE great games, though. I can't believe you're going to say that DP had an underwhelming story when Black and White have an even more of an underwhelming story. I think what made it worse for me was that it tried so hard to be edgy, deep, and different with its themes and absolutely failed to do anything interesting with them. They tried to build something big and it just fell flat. It felt like watching a really bad anime.
To each their own, though, I suppose. Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum will always be legendary games as far as I am concerned.

I found BDSP to be a slog. Mostly because of the jankiness. I have fun playing most Pokémon games. I even liked Sword and Shield, which is unusual in this fandom.
Nothing about BDSP feels intentional. The EXP Share is even more poorly balanced in these games. It isn't taken into consideration at all. The chibi style doesn't fit some of the more serious themes. Following Pokémon is done just to include the feature, not enhance your experience.
PLA, in contrast, is also not perfect. The graphics close up can be iffy, mostly with the grass imo. But overall, the games have style. The sky is mesmerizing. The region looks grand in wide shots. There aren't many NPCs or trainer battles because Hisui was barely settled. You're basically a Pokémon professor here. It's different and cool. Sometimes it's tedious, but that kind of works because research can be like that. I really enjoyed these games because there was a reason for the mechanics and aesthetics.
That's the thing with art, intention. It should be cohesive and feel like it's done for a reason (obviously there are exceptions, like Rule of Cool or making something wacky). This is why both BDSP and SV fall short for me, it felt like they did things just because and not because it makes sense with the region.
I will say I do kind of enjoy the way the overworld of BDSP looks. But I do wish we'd gotten a game with the Sword and Shield engine, a real 3D world. I think it could have been better than SwSh if done this way. Also, Platinum's Pokédex.

I never really hated the chibi style and its look in general cause i dont mind games looking different i think the issue was at least for me they were a little messy.
The following along pokemon i think was done very poorly and has been since the sword and shield dlc and has only really worked in Lets Go from the switch games. If you cant do it right why even bother having it in the game you know. Most pokemon i had following were left behind and potentially having to stop for them to catch up. Roomba Ekans
Taking away the option for the affection gimmick is annoying as hell like its been a thing since X & Y and it was OPTIONAL. Like these types of things where you take more options away rather than adding things in or keeping them in is so weird to me. Like if it doesnt matter too much why take it out like swapping pokemon around.
The only thing i do like is the elite 4 and Cynthia actually having hard teams and having their Platinum teams in one rematch and a mix and match team in a second rematch. Cynthia is made even harder and they all have items. How can they get this so right but other parts so wrong
