I was nine years old. Pokemon Silver on the Gameboy Color. It was my first Pokemon game. Switching out batteries. Having them die on epic unsaved runs. Discovering the trick where you cut the power off in the middle of a save. They tried to fix it on Crystal, it was just you had to do the trick in a specific frame. Later on I would play red and blue. I watched the TV show first, so playing yellow was closer to TV show. But yeah, my mistakes were battling and defeating ho-oh and lugia without catching. I didn't teach Feraligatr "Slash", because I read it as "Splash", thinking, "what a weak move to teach an alligator?". I remember evolving Chansey to Blissey through happiness, and someone at school traded it to me for a Celebi they had got from someone with a GameShark. I'm going to be 34 in February. I think the limitation of the technology let your imagination fill in the rest. These were phenomenal games, looking forward to part 2. Aloha from Maui 🤙🏽
You’re just two years older than I am! :0 I started with Gen 1 though when I was 7 in 1999. And I could have sworn Gold/Silver didn’t release until 2000 or 2001… I remember having only Gen 1 for a while before I got Gold/Silver… Anyway though, honestly, Gen 2 quickly became one of my favorite Gens. The day/night cycle and the breeding mechanic have been some of my favorite things ever since. I did not know any of the cheats though. And I still haven’t heard of the save cheat until now… What did that do??
@@AIDreamBeatsMain you need original hardware to perform this trick, and it's much easier to perform on silver and gold than it is crystal. The setup involves, first saving the game. I would choose to save in front of the PC, but anywhere is fine. It's a duplication glitch. What you do, is deposit your Pokemon(s), with whatever item(s) you're trying to duplicate as well, into an empty box. Then switch boxes. While it's switching, you'll be prompted not to turn off the console, and that's exactly what you do. Turn the console off before the text finishes. When you turn your game back on, the box will no longer be empty. It will have the Pokemon you deposited. The Pokemon on your team will also still be there. Rinse and repeat. Master balls and nuggets are farmable. This trick also works in generation 1 games, but it will likely brick your save file.
I want a Johto remake for the Switch that addresses the limitations they had, mainly bringing back the full Kanto region (Cerulean Cave, Viridian Forest, Safari Zone, Seafoam Islands, and also the Sevii Islands with a functional Altering Cave)
I picked Chikorita back when I first got Silver as an 8-year-old. It made each gym victory more satisfying when I won despite unfavorable type matchups.
I'll never get enough of Johto and Johto content. Johto will always be my favorite region because the peaceful, natural and slightly rural locales of most of the game makes me feel so at home, coming from the pacific northwest.
I like the Elite 4 in this game too. Bruno is still here representing the old guard, Lance becoming Champion, Koga being promoted from Kanto, Will being asked to come back to Johto and what i like to think happened is Karen was promoted from being a Johto gym leader
10:31 How very *dare you* sir, it is a crucial piece of the gaming experience to be harassed by Youngster Joey every six and a half minutes telling you about his top percentage Rattata, or question whether or not you should ring Social Services after Fisherman Ralph's 17th phone call about how much more time he spends with his Goldeen than his kids. 19:52 Jynx is sitting in a corner crying Craig lmao. Lapras and Jynx are both guaranteed catches in RB, but yeah there should have been easier ways of dealing with dragons in both Gen 1 AND Gen 2 I think a lot of people see GSC as a flawed experience, and I have to disagree. This video shows that there is a lot of merit in Gen 2, if only you seek it out - the origin story of many of the franchise's most iconic elements, worldbuilding both unique to Johto and expanding on Kanto, legends and lore that absolutely drowns out the modern games in many ways, and a tranquility that hasn't been matched since. Of course, there are major criticisms for me, the painful level curve at the top of the list, and it's disappointing that Gen 2 was treated essentially like a DLC for Gen 1, with so many callbacks to Kanto in it's location, story, villains, and Pokémon, but it is equally disappointing that all people see Gen 2 as IS Kanto's little brother, rather than it's own unique region and generation that brought a lot to the franchise. Johto deserves to truly be brought into the spotlight for modern audiences, and I hope one day it's given that opportunity.
Finally, a recent video that celebrates Johto for what it is rather than bash it for what it's not. Thanks for doing this man. I didn't grow up with Gen 2, I started with Gen 3, but out of all the generations that I've played over the years Gen 1 and Gen 2 are the ones that I always go back to. Them together along with Stadium 1 and 2 just feels complete to me.
Gen 2 is the best, no silly gimmicks and any gimmicks it did have made absolute sense and weren't overdone. No lazy pokemon design, just a perfect game. Not to mention the post-game.
My first Pokemon game was Red. The jump to Crystal was *mindblowing* - to go from monocrome to vibrant colour AND moving sprites, two regions and endless new mechanics was amazing to me as a kid.
The chikorita line isn’t really meant to come in spamming stab grass moves. It’s more of a defensive mon that wears its opponent down while keeping itself healthy with things like leech seed, poison powder and reflect/light screen. It works absolutely fine in that role. But yea if you’re perception of pokemon is spam your strongest stab move, then yea chikorita can’t compete (and your playthrough is probably not that interesting)
Exactly. Lance is only as strong as Giovanni in the Viridian Gym (Red and Blue) in GSC. A strong Water Type Pokémon that knows Surf and Alakazam or Gengar with the elemental punches are enough to defeat Lance.
I completed Pokemon Crystals pokedex including Celebi by putting the 3ds ROM on a flashcart to experience the event. I loved this game so much. Many mechanics were fixed, but still very simple. Only difficult part was doing all the friendship evolutions (especially blissey)
@@sheepaggression6478 I caught and used it to beat Brock. I turned it into my main Pokemon and evolved it to Pidgeot untill i reached Indigo Plateau. Then i caught Zapdos with a Master Ball in order to beat the Elite Four and Blue.
The jump from Gen 1 to 2 was probably the biggest leap in quality in the series. I have a lot of love for the originals, but the sequels just went so hard with content and quality of life.
15:14 it's okay, so did I. I was like 9 at the time, I didn't even know Gold and Silver were a thing yet, I was playing the Demo Crystal cartridge they had at my local Walmart and I didn't think to "change" his name until a year later when I got my own copy of Crystal and was feeling a little mischievous and was mildly disappointed when it stuck. Then I found out after that that Gold and Silver existed and felt like I missed out
This game is still overall great despite its flaws, its a fantastic game with amazing worldbuilding, INCREDIBLE folklore thats some of the best in the series, a great amount of exploration with fantastic landmarks and really good mechanics. They are better than most modern games really and its good to accept it.
I started getting into rom hacks for these older generations recently, and my goodness, Polished Crystal does everything right. Speeding things up a bit really helps the experience when you’ve got kids running around and not much time to get through the game
Gen 2 was for gen 1 as GTA San Andreas was for Vice City: an amazing game somehow made even more amazing. The only thing I didn't like was that they redesigned Kanto in a way that you can complete it in almost any order, which means every NPC is around the same level and the only real post-game challenge is Red. What I loved the most were the caves -- with no Internet back then, it was so thrilling exploring them not knowing what you'd run into.
Johto is a nice region although tbh i wish it was a little bit bigger cause it feels you get through the region fairly quickly with Kanto feeling bigger as a whole. Its like a extension of Kanto. Its level curve is also bad like really bad and to a point i get it cause after the 4th gym the game opens up a lot and they dont want you to struggle against something 20 levels higher but in Kanto the levels absolutely suck especially the wild Pokemon. Like why are some wild pokemon like level 10 in the post game they should be at least in the 30s to 40s. Funny enough my pokemon crystal still works even nowadays. Heres what i will say about johto the steel and dark types were a welcome edition, the move relearner and forgetter were godsends lol
@@devonnborovickaa619 but it could have been even better and there's no real reason why the wild pokemon are like level 5 after the champion fight who was at 50
A team of five Pokémon for battling and the Shiny Gyarados for two HMs (Whirlpool and Waterfall) is enough for the Elite Four and Lance. I replace the Shiny Gyarados with a Kanto exclusive Pokémon when I play Gen 2 now. Saving some new Pokémon for Kanto and Mt. Silver is only a flaw if you consider Victory Road and Indigo Plateau to be the endgame. Even with Pokégear trainer rematches, Johto does not have enough trainer battles for a full team of six Pokémon to be ready to defeat the Elite Four and Lance. Johto is two thirds of the game and Kanto is one third of the game.
Omg I also named my rival “???” my cousin even told me “remember that” when my rival first says “My name’s ???.” as if it was something crucial to the game, so of course I told the police officer it was “???”. And I too thought the rival would reveal their name later, I kept waiting for it.
What if Gen 2 had only the Johto Region with its own League, Evil Team, new Fossils, and a Regional Dex of 151; 105 new and 46 old ones(plus, Regional Variants existing sooner). While the Hoot-Hoot and Spinarak lines were retyped as part Ghost? While the scrapped Ghost mons; Kurstraw and Pangshi were released in the final games. While Dunsparce gains two Evolutions(altered branching line from Dudunsparce) while part Dragon. While Ampharos, Yanma, and Slowpoke were also part Dragon Types? And the GS Ball, Celebi, and time travel being obtainable after showing Elm & Oak the completed Dex? And if one more Legendary was introduced in Gen 2 as powerful as Mewtwo(and was formed by all 26 caught Unowns in Ruins of Alph; resembling a Biblically-Accurate Angel; foreshadowing Gen 4's Arceus)?
I’m mixed about the Johto Pokemon representation. I wish there were more, but at the same time, I don’t really like going out to copy the gym leaders new/ace Pokemon. Pokemon like misdreavus, larvitar, and skarmory felt more unique to the player because no gym leader or notable trainer used them.
I named him ??? too. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to name him or use the ??? name given to me. I didn't want to tell the police officer the wrong name, I thought it'd be a problem cause I thought the police would be hunting him and fail if I gave a name that ended up being wrong, lol
Some things you said seem very bent or info missing to fit your own biases but almost sold as objective and not as an opinion. Although if its supposed to just be a video of just your opinion its not come across that way well. Wasn't a bad video as it flows but hard to tell what youre trying to get across especially with the title, is it just a retrospective? Or broadcast of your opinions? I know they can come hand in hand but it seems slightly flip floppy between the two instead of together
Couldnt disagree more about the route design. Also most routes in pokemon dont have traversal in them either. Though johto has plenty of dungeons that have traversal in them.
