Yes, the squeaky noises were Eno's synth. The individual solos at the end represent the band's influences. For example, the bass plays a clip from Day Tripper by the Beatles, the sax plays In the style of King Curtis, the guitar riff is like Duane Eddy, etc.

    • @craigfazekas3923

Interesting side note on King Curtis (via King Crimson).
When King Crimson arrived in The States for the first time, they had a college gig in Vermont. They showed up to discover that the bills printed up for the show were promoting King Curtis.....
And accordingly, a bunch of tripping hippies showed up expecting to see some blues & jazz being honked out.... A portion of the audience jumped up and ran out of the auditorium during the 1st song- 21st Century Schizoid Man !!! Robert Fripp & Greg Lake remembered feeling bad for those left behind to watch the gig- they recall terrorized faces in the audience. Many had also taken synthetic STP (?), the band found out afterward. Not Curtis- Crimson.....

@@mondegreen9709 you don't have to like Big Star, but I remember all too well the burst of influence they had over southern alternative music almost 20 years later, it was like they were reborn. That's really all I meant. I too like Roxy music much more although Thirteen and Sepember Girls and For You hold a special place. Totally different music, experimental vs simple and charming. Not comparing just seeing the mark they left.

Roxy's first album was released the same day as Bowie's - The rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust... It's going to be 49 years ago very soon! Both albums are brilliant and ground breaking, being the first real classics of the still infant 'glam rock' scene. T. Rex's Electric Warrior was released the year earlier, but not in the same league, The Sweet and Gary Glitter were bubblegum. These were albums rock fans liked as well as the teeny-boppers - some of whom discovered music which must have blown their minds.
Justin, it's worth searching TH-cam for Roxy's performance of 'Ladytron' from this album, on the British late night music show 'The old grey whistle test'. In 1972 it was like watching and listening to, aliens from a different planet. Just how radical Roxy's first album was, is proven by the fact that 49 years later, it still sounds weird, and that's not a bad thing.

Hey JP. So glad you decided to react to a song from Roxy Music's debut album. 'Remake/Remodel' is a great opening track. This seems to be the most enthusiastic reaction you've had to Roxy since you did "Out of The Blue' way back. That's Brian Eno making all those squeaky electronic sounds on his synthesizer. He was R2D2 before R2D2. Hmmm ?....You know I've always wondered if the outro of Pink Floyd's 'Welcome To The Machine' was influenced by the intro to this song with the party noises and all. That model on the cover is Kari Ann Muller who happens to be Mick Jagger's sister in law. She's married to Mick's younger brother Chris Jagger.Interesting in that Jerry Hall who was the model on the cover of Roxy Music's fifth album "SIREN' was Bryan Ferry's girlfriend for awhile but she eventually left him for Mick Jagger.Glad you enjoyed this one,and a great review as always.Hope you continue with this album.Other songs you may also enjoy 'Amazona', 'Prairie Rose' 'Bitter-Sweet'. Take care.

This album was produced by noted King Crimson co-founder and lyricist, Pete Sinfield, who should certainly be given mad props for creating the sound pastiche for this landmark album. Somebody below mentions that this album and Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust" were released the same week. I had both albums upon release. I bought "Ziggy" for $2.99 on sale at my local (Houston) record store. RCA Records had a $4.98 list price on it, and it was to sell, normally at $3.99, but getting it the first week of release got me that $2.99 sale price.
As my dad was in local radio, he would bring home, weekly, a box from the station of the latest Warner Bros. promotional releases. Sure enough, that's how I got this LP. At some point, later that month, he also got a nifty promo item from WB that he gave me (he was more into jazz): A tiny, plastic billboard (measuring maybe 3-4" tall and about 6" wide).
Able to slip into it was a full color reproduction of the open gatefold front cover artwork from this debut RM album! Like all the promo albums and items I got from my dad in the early '70s, and that I received from the mid-'70's through the early '80s, when I got into radio and the record biz, I kept all that stuff till about 2 decades ago, when I sold it all on eBay!

another great Roxy Music song from this early era is Virginia Plain, which is on some versions of this album and not on others.. but I think it was their first single.. try and watch them doing it live when Eno was still in the band... also, you should try and check out the inner sleeve of the album, because they were revolutionary in their style as well as their music... it was glam rock, but with a retro twist that foretold the punk/new wave that was just around the corner... Roxy Music was retro and futuristic at the same time... At this early stage they were not known in North America at all, and I bought their second album purely because I was intrigued by the band name and the cover... I took it home and loved it so much, I went back to the record store the same day and bought this first album, which was the only other album out at that time.... they became one of my obsessions, but it was impossible to get other people in North America to listen to them, and they didn't get any radio play in North America until Love is the Drug off their fifth album, which has a disco sound to it.

Another in my personal canon of the best "introduction" (1st album/side A/song 1) songs in rock.
I was a long-haired, flannel shirt-wearing guy into "Topanga Canyon scene" sounds when a friend brought this LP to HS: opening the gatefold to see those band pics was mind-blowing. I love how Phil's playing is "inverted" during the "solos" portion: he wails away throughout it until his turn, where he just plays some chords.
If you haven't already done so, I strongly suggest watching the live version from the German TV show Musikladen - essential.

Of the approximately 2,000,000 Eno solo projects, one of his "rock" ventures that I think would be a real treat for you as a full album listen is his second one, 1974's Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy). At least dip your toes into the track "Third Uncle" for the bass line. But please consider the album as a whole - great musicians (Phil & Andy from Roxy, Robert Wyatt, Phil Collins), and a wonderful warmup for Another Green World and Before And After Science, both also having amazing guest musicians. Hope to hear those explored someday, too. Great reaction!

By that time, though, "VP" had been released as a single in the UK. BTW, Kenton's photo was included on the inside gatefold jacket of the US release, as they had time to replace the Simpson photo included on the UK issue.

I saw Roxy in Houston (that's key to part of the story!) opening for Gary Wright, Feb 29, 1976. My hip friends and I all were anxious to see Roxy, but couldn't care less about "The Dream Weaver" guy! Many, if not most, of the crowd felt similar, and the Sam Houston Coliseum seemed to empty a bit following Roxy's set!
Anyway, Texas native, Jerry Hall was in the crowd! A couple years before she discovered Mick Jagger, she was dating, of course, Bryan Ferry, and from my floor seat, I saw her walk up the aisle at one point, easily recognizable from all the press she was getting in CREEM, Hit Parader, Circus, and all the other mags of the day!

I got into Roxy Music in late 1973 when they released Street Life, I worked backwards to the first LP.....This track blew my mind. It took a while to move on to the next track. The ending is a take on "Interstellar Overdrive." Not surprising as David O' List (their previous guitarist) used to dep for Syd Barrett when he was awol.....Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come did a great parody of the solos on "The Traffic Light Song" from their second LP. The girl in this song was someone he spotted driving away. He caught the licence plate and used it as a chorus to call out to her.....not sure if his scheme worked or not!

Correct, the first two albums are the most exciting and experimental. After Eno left, they went smoother, sold far more records, wrote some world class tunes, but lost that thirst for innovation. There are some great tunes on this first album, but imho, For Your Pleasure (the second album) fleshed out the ideas better.

I love their first 2 albums, but for me, when Eddie Jobson came on board, their next 3 albums were their golden period. Unfortunately, after the Siren album, they lost their edge and their sound became way too smooth and over produced (IMHO).

I always picture a jet set party with bored millionaires suddenly being sonically assaulted by the band they hired to play lounge jazz in the background.
THIS is the Roxy Music I like. Rough, raw, aggressive and hilarious. And the occasional profound thought and tear as well, of course.
Later on, they became so laid-back and romantic that it was like watching alcoholic bums sliding off their chairs...
Oh, and you missed the nod to the Beatles' "Day Tripper! It's the bass solo part towards the end.

You nailed that description of the band. There's a feel of newness as well as decadence. My introduction to the band (like many others) was the "Times Square" soundtrack which had 'Same Old Scene' by Roxy Music. I bought that Roxy album "Flesh + Blood" and it's still my favorite. That soundtrack also had songs by Joe Jackson, The Cure, The Pretenders, Tubeway Army (Gary Numan), Talking Heads, Lou Reed and Patti Smith Group among others.

I think that the "squeaky noise" is Brian Eno's VCS 3 synthesiser. I seem to recall that it had a joystick rather than a keyboard and lots of dials and other controls for creating noises and soundscapes.

I forgot how kick-ass this song was! I agree about how it’s a great intro to the band. I would have to say if you ever listen to the Flower Kings their first song on their first album, “In the World of Adventures” brings the same thing to mind for me. Hint, hint... Great song choice again JP!

  • @tersse

you need to remember this is a studio album, and the engineers did a lot of hot work on this to fill the voids but not over do anything, when you talk about live performances, yeh its all the band, but remember they learned this from the studio, we engineers get very little cudos for what we do, but honestly, we can make a poor band good and a good band great.
we cant turn shit into shinola, we have our limits :)

This album sounds like a diamond in the rough. There a good tracks but elsewhere the production is lacking and the band sounds "raw" for lack of a better term. This song however is great. I much prefer the followup album, "For Your Pleasure". For an inspired Eno synthesizer solo check out "Editions of You".
Some of these early Roxy tunes Ferry would re-record. I like his version of "Chance Meeting" on his solo album, "Let's Stick Together".
There's a Steve Wilson 5.1 remix of the debut Roxy Music album. I'd love to hear it but it's too expensive for me to purchase. Now, "Country Life" I'd gladly pay that cost :-)

Eno's Another Green World and Before and After Science are pure genius. JP, he's responsible for making music what it is today. He invented " ambient music " which morphed into inferior" new age" claptrap. He's a career maker to this day: Talking Heads, Devo, U2, James, Coldplay , Bowie's Berlin Period and so much more.

Listen to the whole album - it's remarkable and I listen regularly. I like the next album - In Every Dream Home A heartache but then thought they went too much as a pop band. They missed the arty influence of Brian Eno. Great musicians, though - especially Phil Manzanera on guitar and Andy Mackay on sax.

Roxy's first single, Virginia Plain got very high in the UK charts but was not on the album. a lot of people buying the album on the strength of the single would have possibly been shocked. There was no other song that was single material, and the songs were bit "out there" even for the early 70s. To me, this whole album is as relevant today as when I bought it as a schoolboy in 1972. PS. according to a fan club newsletter from the 70s, CPL593H was the registration number of Ferry's first car - a Ford Capri.

But I am being a dummy in the instance, so I can't get too riled over it haha. Anyway, this is definitely my kind of Roxy Music. Playful is the word I would use for this song. And it packs enough punch to steer clear of pop, wich means that I`m not bored listening to it. The saxophone is the star in this one, it just makes fun of everything and everyone. Even though I wouldn`t seek this one out, I wouldn`t change the song if it was played on the radio.

    Roxy Music's music
sounds like Roxy Music. a fair bit of punk vibe really. but i suppose
    "The In Crowd"
will always be their best single - that will take some beating. 4 Sure.
Hearin this for the first time and up until the instru breaks I was thinkin
"Blimey they didn't change much then"
    Anyway, good band. Great singles.
Two Welsh bands need some acclaim.
Super Furry Animals - a 90s Roxy Music if you will
    and
Manic Steet Preachers - new LP out soon and still relevant I suppose since 1989
OK , let's make it a hat trick
    Budgie .
    Three Welsh Giants.
Diolch! What a lovely day it's turned out to be.
