Sirens were mythical creatures who lured sailors with their music causing them to end up shipwrecked on their island - I think the lyrics may mean this rather than referring to emergency sirens. The Lorelei is a rocky Island on the Rhine river which is also supposed to be the home of a Siren like creature whose murmuring is reputed to cause boating accidents in the area. I believe there is a classical german poem "Die Lorelei" which tells this story

    • @gaiaeternal5131

You're right about Lorelei, Malcolm. Been past the rock on a Rhine boat trip. Also the venue of the annual Night of the Prog festival. Haven't been to that, but I see the headliners this year are Renaissance, Steve Hackett, Colosseum and PFM.

Highly recommend Eno's early solo work: "Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy", "Here Come The Warm Jets", "Another Green World", and "Before And After Science". Truly. Pick any one. I think the best match to this fantastic Roxy Music song would come from "Here Come The Warm Jets". Similar feel in ways. Blessings.

"Assault on the senses" is a perfect description! The segueways, both from vocals to instruments and from one instrument to the next, really contributes to the relentless of the piece. Lyrics are fantastic, especially with Ferry's crooning. And the musicianship on each solos is impeccable. Eno's synth work really hit me as one of the best uses of electronic instruments in a dual music/non-musical role. Enough blathering. Thanks for the reaction Justin!

You can't imagine the amount of bands who built their style on this song, from Buzzcocks (Pete Shelley said it) to Madness and so much more. Eno's electronical noisy solo was totally unheard in 1973, moreover in glam or pop music. A pivotal song for sure.

Hi Justin, yes, this whole album is a Roxy Music classic. Thanks for your reaction.
And the lyric, "another fine edition of you", draws (pun intended) on Bryan Ferry's art school training and his familiarity with 'original limited edition fine art prints' made by artist print makers, from Rembrandt to William Blake to Picasso and beyond.

A crackin' track, early RM, deffo the best. It gallops along with solo after solo, really keeps you invested. Not sure I'd call Eno's bit a 'solo' per se, but it is effective. And of course Ferry's great voice, and delivery, this's really good stuff. *Re a recommendation, and another side of Roxy JP, you should check out Ferry's "The Jazz Age". It's instrumental, 13 classic RM songs reworked, and arranged in the 1920's jazz band style. It's super authentic of the time, and a great listen. Cab Calloway would definitely approve.

Weird to think that it has been 50 years since I saw Roxy Music w/Brian Eno, dressed in his wings. Guess I'm going to have to start acting all grown uppy. I think you might like "Avalon" the album which not only has the title cut but also "To Turn You On" and a few great songs. Their song "Don't Stop the Dance" is very snappy, and was featured in the movie "Bright Lights, Big City", from the novel by Jay McInerny, with whom I share birthdays, as it that were important. My first rock band was called "Mother Whale Eyeless" from an Eno song, circa mid-70s. Generally it was pretty heady to be keen on progressive and art rock and fusion 50 years before the folks who today still find it advanced. In this case, Eno more than Roxy. You'll be amazed at what has transpired and progressed since then. Most didn't progress, as you well know. Everything in its time.
