Love your reaction Matt that's how I felt as a 14 yr old in 1972! Absolutely brilliant. :-)

Thank you for taking the suggestion to listen to Roxy Music. Lead vocalist Bryan Ferry is described as having a 1930s crooner voice. Yes, you are right that there are many different musical styles involved on this song. Simon LeBon and John Taylor of Duran Duran spoke at Roxy Music's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony and stated that there would be no Duran Duran if Roxy Music did not exist.

Loved your reaction so much. It was so appropriate in a way, because I think that when Roxy Music burst into the music scene in the early 70's, they were so unique and sounded like nothing that anyone had heard before at that time. It may sound a bit like 'classic rock' today, but back then it was all new art school crazy stuff from outer space. Or something like that. I was born in Germany in 1974, I have no clue.
Brian Eno was playing "Synthesiser & Tapes" according to the sleeve notes, and that could not have been a fancy Fairlight computer based instrument. They listed who had done their hair, clothes and make-up on the sleeve which had no one done before (as far as my memory tells me).
Anyway, they were revolutionary in many ways, and the sound changed drastically within the following decade. So it will be a wonderful journey here.

The track title is derived from Rethink/Re-entry an oil on canvas picture by the artist Derek Boshier from 1962. Ferry was well aware of modern art as he got a degree in fine art from Newcastle Uni studying under Richard Hamilton. The nearest uk equivalent to Warhol.

Roxy means rockish or rocksy like the word bluesy. They are considered the second greatest art rock band of all time next to the number one art rock group of all time, some quartet from Liverpool called The Beetles or the Beat Ls or something, some weird lads who apparently shook the earth, supposedly.

Check out the Musikladen video here on TH-cam of them performing this live back in 1973. It's even better!

The laser gun sounds are self proclaimed non musician Brian Eno playing with his knobs and switches. You nailed it my friend take everything from the last 80 years and remake remodel them into a song about not getting a girls number but getting her car licence plate CPL5938

Looking forward to more Roxy Music reactions. They have been cited as major influences by many of the other artists you react to, beyond just DD. Bryan Ferry’s solo stuff is excellent as well, more smooth/sophisticated like later Roxy Music and less glam-rock than this.

The name is meant to convey a 50s type, slightly trashy glamour. Bryan Ferry named them after the 50's cinemas.
