- Rickenbacker 325C58 Build in 10 Days
This is a Step by Step Photographic Video Tour through my build of this classic guitar.
It was made with basic DIY tools ,Drill, Jigsaw, Plane and a Router.
I am neither a Carpenter nor do I have any training in wood working.
The information for this build was done purely with the help from
guitar forums and luthier websites on the internet.
For the full Step by Step blog with over 80 photos, explanation and costs to this build please see:

I do not own any rights to the music used in this video.
Incredible amount of skill that I don't possess. That's fantastic! Love to play it myself to see how it measures up against my old c58. Very, very cool.
Thanks Brian...I love your vids..
where did you get the template from?
Fancy running into you here Brian!
Respect man. Took me around 6 years to finish my 4005 replica, in reality, around 3 months with a lot of down time. And I didn't make the fretboard either.
unbelievable....There are so many things that could go wrong yet THAT is exquisite....Great job!
Wow thats beautiful! Now a soundclip/demo!!!
Dude, you need to take that thing to Rickenbacker & apply for a job!
It's flawless! :)
Agree.
A brilliant download, but I looked at the Guitarbuild website and could not see a 325 available?!?!
GuitarBuild only supply the wood for the body on this guitar...They don't supply plans or anything like that...just the wood...You have to work out what size you want and they can cut it for you as a block...See the first pic of all the materials in the video...
@@lewistaylor1965 Where did you get the pickups? Would you upload guitar's sound?
I would totally have this guy build me one. It looks like it's going to last a vert long time. More people are build their own Rics and the more people who build them is one less guitar Rickenbacker sells. I could never afford one but a vert good friend bought me a 620 maple glo for my birthday. I can be happy now. But I would like a 425 fire glo one of these days.
I'd love to see an updated video of this beauty! It looks superb and I'd love to hear it in action!
I have always loved Lennon's Rik in this incarnation. Very impressive job, really enjoyed yours post along with the Hamburg music!
I've always admired craftsmen who work with wood. excellent job!
Fantastic job; brilliant craftsmanship and a fascinating record of a tremendous build. The only thing I'd point out is the two-tiered scratchplate was on Lennon's later Ricky - his 58 had a single scratcplate. Lovely guitar though.
That's superb mate. I'm going through dilemma of finding a good copy to totally rebuild into a version of this very guitar! Hats off!.
If you need any info then get in touch with me...You need to read the tutorial in the link and also the link I link to in the blog at MyLesPaul.com....There is so much info there and that is where I learned that this was an achievable goal for a novice too...Its a must to checkout...Good Luck...
LT-Thanks for pulling back the curtain on the creation of this classic guitar. I hope it plays as beautifully as it looks!
Holy Moses Merlin! Mad skills. Inspiring! Kudos. Cheers from Cali!
Yeah...It's actually a lot easier than you may think...I had a lot of help from forums...I'd never done any kind of cabinet making or anything like that and I put the video up so folk could see how easy it was to build one and how fast you could do it with basic tools...Have fun bud...and love to Columbia from the UK
I had a genuine Rickenbacker Model 325 Prototype V100 from 1958 .That guitar was fast playing.I chose it because it was the same year in which I was born and I liked the look of it.
You did a fantastic job there.
Man!...If you had that guitar today it would be worth many thousands!
Hey, man. Thanks for this video. Because of this video, I hired a luthier to build my Ricken 325.
I hired a guy to build mine too. I should get it this week. His name is Fred Evans of Evans Custom Guitars in Florida and his work is amazing. This is my 2nd custom build from him.
@@ianmeyers7268 - wondering if you got your guitar and if you’re happy with it. Did you specify that you wanted a 325 c58? Also… what was the first guitar Evans built for you? Thanks.
That's amazing ! I build a toy model of this Rickenbacker when I was a kid, but this is really impressive.
Wow. You may not be a professional carpenter but you have some mad skills. Fantastic!!!
I wanted to know how to install the Bigsby the most, but it's a pity that I couldn't see it.
Fitting the Bigsby is an easier part of the build...It touches the base of the guitar body...So you run a straight edge down the centre of the neck all the way to the base of the body and mark a 3 or 4 inch line it at the body base (use tape instead of pencil if you are concerned with marking you beloved guitar)...You can then mark a 90 degree angle from the line near the base of the body will give you the correct rotation of the tailpiece string retainer...Place your Bigsby there, mark the screw holes, drill pilot holes, remove your marks (or tape) and screw it in place...Bear in mind that John Lennon fitted his on the counter of a music shop in Liverpool the day he bought it and is actually rotated a degree or so clockwise off centre...John Lennon was 'not practically minded' (quote from Ringo)
great skill and great 'background' sound track...
Excellent craftsmanship and quality of thought.😁😁😁
That guitar is absolutely beautiful. Amazing. I'd love it if someone built me a 425.
WTH , Holy Cow , if your playing skills are a tiny fraction of your building skills you must be one killer picker !!! this is one of my dream guitars to own
Really like it
Extremely impressed!! I want to do the same thing now!!
Absolutely brilliant build with just basic woodworking tools puts some luthiers to shame RIC should snap you up bro
Congrats. Tim
Cheers, much appreciated!
so enjoyed that!
Man this is just a great resource. I'm so going to build one very soon.
Absolutely brilliant Lewis.Love it.Think you may have found your future vocation.
Congratulations, a masterpiece.
Superb ...
Really clean ! Looks like a true rickenbacker !
the part for made rick,is expensive the wood is cheap, the cost more 1000 $ , fantastic job.
Hi Lewis, could you let me have the detailed measurements of the wood you bought, e.g. neck length and length, width and thickness of fingerboard. I followed your description on MLP, got registered but somehow can't figure out how to contact members there....Cheers and Merry Christmas!
You are my hero! If I only had your skill and time!
Thats so cool, great job!
Very cool
Well done mate. You should be very proud of it!
Impressive! Really!
Urgh. Crap. Doesn't look anything like a Rick I've ever seen.... JOKE! I'm flabbergasted. Fucking top job bro!
+buckbumble
Especially done in less than two weeks. Very well done
Well done.
I'm speechless....I wish I had your time, tools and skill to pull this off myself. I have a pattern for a Rick 350....longer neck version of the 325. Will I ever build it, I hope someday...?
totally awsome!
What a beautiful lady you got there :D Fantastic to see her coming to life!
Please make a video of you playing it
Holy Hell, this kicks ass. Nice results, and thanks so much for sharing.
Perfect my friend, I am from Brazil and I will adimirei your work ... it is nois!
wow lew - outstanding work! i´d really love to hear this beautiful wodden thing you built there...
In 1962 John Lennon had the body and headstock Spray painted making the Iconic ed Sullivan guitar
Nope..the color has nothing to do with it. V59s came in black as well as natural. V59 has double guard and is maple instead of Alder like the C58. The c58 is about 2 lbs lighter. C58 is full 2 inch thick..the V59s were a little less.
John Lennon had the guitar painted black. The v series of Rickenbackers are usually vintage reissues. There is for example the c64 and v63, the c58 and v59. The vintage reissues are generally less expensive
I'm so unbelievably jealous
u make it look so easy
I think he's just lazy/doesn't care. I mean it looks fine and it's not like there's anything that special about ricks other than their pickups and the fact that they only make so many in a year
ernesto ballantine well considering he built the guitar the way a guitar should be built and with that level of craftsmanship, it probably didn't fall to bits.
You've obviously, never owned a Rickenbacker, or you wouldn't say that. You use a Rick to achieve a certain sound.
(There is NO substitute).
Ricks are NOT versatile. If you want versatility, get a Casino.
A Rick is definitely a special guitar, but they're NOT for everybody.
I wouldn't expect someone who drinks PBR to appreciate a fine German beer, Likewise with someone who prefers cheap guitars, I would not expect them to appreciate the sound & craftsmanship of a Rick!
Sure, Ernie! You show me your Rick, I'll show you mine!
awesome job...!!
AWESOME!!!
Absolutely outstanding Lewis! Speechless.......I usually build amps but have been bitten by the guitar making bug recently. I think its time to give this one a go as it would make a nice compliment to my last amp build.........a "63 VOX AC30 with integrated top boost (it's the one in my profile pic). Having played a mate's 320B through it and hearing how it sounded, it's a must build for me now. Would love to get a few basic measurements from you if you wouldn't mind!! Cheers!
I got the dimensions from the official Rickenbacker site....Also check the link in the above description for blog and step by step guide....You only need tracings from the body and headstock shapes to build this with maximum accuracy...I can help you with anything you need....You can also get those shapes from anyone who has an original 325.....Let me know
You Sir....are a GENIUS !
incredible, congratulations from Argentina, your guitar has been very good. At this moment I am building the same guitar, could you help me by telling me the length of the truss rod you used?
I bought a standard length truss rod...and then I spot welded the end...You can do this yourself or get a welder who would charge a real small amount of money just to spot weld in a few seconds...Check the vid at 0.33 and you can see where I welded it...Then i just sawed it off...To be fair the truss on these short scale Ricks is probably hardly used as the neck is so short that there is minimal bend when the guitar is tuned especially if you get the correct strings on it...
Pretty impressive effort! Nice work
I wanna make this guitar but its so hard to find some part in my country. And if i order part form another country, it might be same price as secondhand.
OMG. Amazing.
Make a vid if you playing it
Awesome love it 100% fab gear yeah dig
my friend i don't know why you don't play it in this video, if you are worried of your playing skills in front of an audience i wouldnt, youtube has players of all skill levels and you could demonstrate the sound without having to be so 'fancy' a player ... cheers from brazil
Can you build Rickenbacker basses?
You sir, are amazing.
Would you please do a video of it ? :)
Do you have plans for this project ?
What would you charge for a duplicate?
I wouldn't do it I'm afraid...But you got all the info you need in the link and vid to do it yourself or a woodworker buddy to do it...That will be way cheaper than the real deal...Sorry bud...
Incredible! You are a very talented luthier!
can you build me one??
Incredible!
Where did you buy those knobs? Amazing work
Ebay...look up 'Rickenbacker cooker knobs'
Quiero una ❤:c
Wow...kudos. Amazing!
Very nice, should be a single piece pick guard if it's a copy of John's though 👍
Amazing! Better than some of the videos of people playing Beatles songs. hahaha.
Wow!!!
please would you be willing to share the sources you used to make this guitar?
Yes...Its all there under the vid...Click the link..
Awesome skill!!
Hom many $ for the bigsby gretsch? ??
All pricessss on blog...follow link in description
Looks great but does it sound great?
John Spooner Its not bad...It certainly has that clunky old rick sound....Altho the pickups were cheapies.....I am in the process of winding some pups for it that should be bang on....
genius
I want one. How much?
That was awesome ! Talent Deluxe ! Was that Lennon you were playing ? I could have watched every minute of that build . Cheers
Cheryl and me are really impressed - you are too modest Lewis... Lewis?
Dude your blog is not available anymore. How did you put the color on you pickguards?? Is it a sticker? Or is it paint?? You showed a picture on the video but i just dont get it. Thanks
Spray the underside of the plexi with gold spray paint. Also, get the plexi that is frosted on one side and clear on the other side. Make sure you paint the clear side and and use that as the underside. I made a gold Gretsch style pickguard for a Country Gent that way.
It was vinyl sticker...You can buy it...The clear Perspex was bought in a sheet and I simply cut it with a jigsaw and the used a round file to get it to shape and then sandpaper to smooth...I can make pickguards to any spec so was not a big deal for me or anyone who can sculpt wood too...
Hey bro, watching your video inspire me very much and I want to make a rickenbacker but reviewing the entire process in the forum of mylespaul.com I had doubts about the measures I wanted to know if you could help me and you could pass all the measures help me please
What's the height from the soundboard to the top of fretboard? Asking because I'm making a mandolin ric styled after a 330
For those asking for one like this and/or in lefty...check this...

lewistaylor1965 i jumped on one in the c64 style last year, their prices have gone up nearly $200 in that time! I made a very crude 4001, I'm going to have a crack at a 325, fix up a few little things like headstock angle and make it a semi-hollow instead of the solid body that REG built. Still a very nice guitar I have, but the one you made is a thing of beauty
I can't believe you don't have a shop and are doing that all in the back yard. Would have been nice to hear it as well.
Well...I have a job already that I get better paid for...If you work it our, there's 10 days work there...and that was 12 - 14 hours a day...so more like 15 days work...and then you take an average wage of any skilled craftsman...Then that would be the cost plus materials...And then you have to find buyers...On top of that I'm not too interested in building more than one or two...One or two would be fun...but no more...
hahaha incredible skill, dude, amazing job you do, good music and great guitar, congrats ;D
THIS IS THE RICKENBACKER GUITAR I MADE FOR JOHN LENNON.🎸
Can you build a lefty like this!?
Exactly what I was thinking.
Greenville Hometown Yes...you can build a lefty like this...the only thing that is needed is a lefty Bigsby which Bigsby do make ..Everything else is made by the builder as a one off as I did...Also AFAIK Rickenbacker never made a left Hamburg 325....so that would be a sight to see..
how did you put in the electronics? that's the bit that's got me confused.
+Angel Quintas I screwed in the pickups and soldered them to the wiring harness....
Oh okay, thanks! I'm thinking about doing a Ric build myself and that was what I needed to know :)
Angel Quintas Make sure you get involved in a blogg on a luthier site...You'll get loads of help....Do it on the LesPaul website in this vid description is best bet...Dave is really helpfull over there....
+lewistaylor1965 will do!
Beautiful, man! Were you a Rickenbacker luthier?
ernesto ballantine What is the cause of your idiot comment? Do you have any talent for make something? If its true what you say about luthiers, so fuckin' what? They are talented people who fight for a better life. And very good for Rickenbacker for giving them a chance and not being jerks like you, Trump-ass-kisser! I didn't ask you a thing!
@@edwardwilbury8264 No...I am not a Rickenbacker Luthier....I wanted to get the real Rick 325 but they are one of the most expensive Ricks you can get so I decided to build one...I also wanted to show folks that they can build one too with limited skills and basic tools...
I like your work but Rickenbackers have 2 truss rods but any way great work :)
The Rickenbacker 325 has one truss rod...
www.rickresource.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=104&t=414921
@@lewistaylor1965 older Rickenbackers do till I believe somewhere in 1961 or 1962 they started putting 2
I think you may be getting confused with the more common 330's and 360's both of which have 2 truss rods...The 325 model has one truss rod...It did in the early days and it did when they reissued the model...I have 2 original Rickenbacker 325 models and a 330...My 325v63 (1999) has one truss rod and my 325c58 (2007) also has only one truss rod...
Great job! I'd like to try it myself. Anyway to get the outline trace sketch of the guitar? Thanks
For nothing
Cool
COOL 😎
does anyone know the dimensions or a template of the body
Nice work!
How did you carve out the ramp?
He has a thread on my les Paul explaining it. He drew the shape and then slowly worked away at it with with a rasp.
To anyone who comes across this comment: Currently I am gathering information to build a Rickenbacker 325c58. But the point is can anyone tell me what that piece is under the third pickup just above the bridge is? I would gladly appreciate it.
Fermis paradox1 I'll let you know, thanks for the support and the best of luck to you
Built one after watching and learning from this video and it turned out great . Now I want to do a second one in black with the Burns knobs etc. Scored a 60`s correct Bigsby and Sorkin bridge and want to get this one as accurate as possible . All Lewis`s (and Dave`s) pictures are gone?? and there is little detail on the net. Got a couple of good pics of Lennon`s 58 to blow up to actual size so I can get the right body shape and head stock shape . How`s your going ?
That is brilliant news...So glad my little video helped you...Rock on man!
