Why remove the snow from the shelter? It makes a good insulator, no? Also, why empty all of her kit while she is constructing the shelter. No wonder she is wet and cold if she lets all her bedding get wet. And why leave her bag out overnight to get covered in snow? I admire her adventurous attitude, but I fear for her safety.

Because it's raining and snowing and spending a lot of time acquiring components for your primitive shelter is the reason not to build a primitive shelter. Get yourself a tarp or tent to avoid the time, energy constructing and avoiding potential hypothermia.
