    So I actually work on HMMWV’s in the army and doing the brakes on these is actually a breeze. You don’t have to lift the truck in the air even. The pads come out super easy and to do the rotors it’s literally like 4 bolts and the axle just slides out of the way. Easier than most cars I’ve worked on to be honest.

    • @TedwardDrives
      @TedwardDrives  4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      No kidding! Can you get to them without removing that big metal brace under it?

    • @HondaFanUA
      @HondaFanUA 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Tedward the HMMWV’s don’t have that brace, I think it’s something the owner added or possibly the GM. But without that brace you just undo the pins and the pads slide right out. Also I feel that it feels so good under braking because it’s got massive 4 piston brakes all around. I was surprised when I first saw it.

    • @HondaFanUA
      @HondaFanUA 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I’d say it takes about 5 minutes to pull an axle out if the bolts aren’t seized and then you have full access to the rotors

    • @nothingtoseaheardammit
      @nothingtoseaheardammit 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup - and changing out the CV's takes about 15 minutes per side.

    • @nothingtoseaheardammit
      @nothingtoseaheardammit 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@HondaFanUA GM didn't have any involvement in the H1 prior to the Alpha's that were only available in 2006 - and only then the only thing that GM lent AM General was engineering and testing resources. The design was all AM General throughout the life of the H1. What you see there is the undercarriage prortection - something that most trucks - including my 2000 model have.

    I remember when we got these when i was in the Marine Corps. Back in 1984 or 85 we got a half dozen and it was my job to inspect and then teach my Marines how to drive them. That is in no way like the M998 HMMWV. All canvas shit seats, no padding on the dash or anywhere in the interior and canvas/vinyl doors and top. They were leaps and bounds better than the old jeep that had been around since WW2.

    Big reason for why the brake so well is the portal reduction at the wheels.
    Not only does that help with getting g the vehicle moving putting less strain on the drivetrain by reducing the ratio at the wheel and multiplying the force, it helps with braking by again multiplying that braking force at the portal(at i think 4:1).

    I think you would get used to the size with time.
    I drive a 20 ft box truck for work.
    A lot of 2 lane country roads with no shoulders.
    Just becomes second nature and doesn’t worry you after you have a good understanding of how it handles and takes corners.
    Not much clearance to center and edge lines, but you get used to it.
    Most cornering I am there with the cars (or faster if they are going 45 in a 45), and do it safely and always in my lane.
    Only has a 3 liter twin turbo, but it will go 75 down the highway and completely stable, unless on enough of a grade, then might slow down to 70.
    Just takes it a while to get up to speed on a hill.
    And a couple of seconds for the turbos to spool up when taking off from a stop.

    • @TedwardDrives
      @TedwardDrives  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You’re 100% right. It did get a lot easier to place it on the road. After I made this video I drove it a bit more and I got a lot more confident with it. Still insanely wide but it was less scary than the first 30 miles 😂

      Be a man, do it 😁. I expatriated from the UK to Central Europe where many car parks are 2 metres max height where a normal H1 and G class will just about fit in.
      In my opinion a G Class 4x4 squared is more challenging to own. I plan to possess these both vehicles in future and upgrade their powertrains to embarass the typical supercar owner

    • @christopherdean1326
      @christopherdean1326 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bakerdow9884 Nice idea, but the H1 would need several thousand horsepower to do that! They're two and a half tons, with the aerodynamics of a small factory. Out of the factory they have 190hp and do 83mph. To double the speed you need four times the power, so call it 800hp to do 166mph. That's not going to bother someone in a twenty year old Countach, so you want to go faster. 3x speed needs 9x power. 1700hp or so will get you to 240mph. Quite apart from anything else, do you really want to be doing that speed in something as ungainly as an H1? And have you considered trying to stop the brute?

    • @bakerdow9884
      @bakerdow9884 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@christopherdean1326 If you source engines from the US, you can purchase GM turnkey key engines from the US with 1500hp easily and there are many firms willing to push that to near 3000hp. You can also transplant with the more traditional Duramax, Cummins and Ford Powerstroke

    • @bakerdow9884
      @bakerdow9884 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@christopherdean1326 I am within a few hours of the closest Autobahn, but realistically in most cases top speeds of supercars do not mean a thing on most roads. A Hummer that can accelerate and keep up with a Lambo will bruise any supercar owners ego 😁

    I have this exact same year and color H1. To drop the brush guard, 2 pins just below the headlights. Also the hood latches on each side of the truck. Someone locked it in to high and it’s scratching the paint. Then on the drivers side by the door, there’s a small black handle. Pull it towards you. Then you can open the hood. Also my guess based on the night vision and where the CB is. This was a factory demo. I would also reach out to predator to see all the mods they did. I would guess 15k worth of goodies at minimum.

    They're not that bad. I drove a M35A2 now that can be a little scary. No power steering and it's a 2.5 ton truck. The breaks were hardly happening. i remember missing my turn twice before I actually got it slowed down in order to make the turn since I miss judged the stopping distance. That was my first time driving one and it was pretty cold/icy out. There is a lot of play in the steering and it takes a lot of revolutions to get it to turn. Other than that the M35A2 was a cool truck but I decided not to buy one. Just too slow really. It seemed pretty quick until I looked in the mirrors and saw like 5 or 6 cars behind me, lol. Yeah, not much power after 2nd gear. I'd much rather have a M998 or H1. I'll have to settle for my H2.

      @nothingtoseaheardammit 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No no no no no. There's this huge misconception that a d-max swap is just something that you can do and it all makes it great. First of all you need to put a 2" body lift on the truck to make it fit - something that is illegal in many states. Then you need to replace the engine, all of the accessories, the entire cooling stack, the transmission, the driveline, the diffs need to be regeared, the CV axles need to be upgraded to 12k/Alpha, the brakes need to be upgraded, the fuel system needs to be changed, the hub input gears need to be swapped out, then you need to chase down every electrical gremlin to make all of the "normal" things work like your cruise control (something Predator doesn't tell you - they charge $2500 for that to be enabled). There's only ONE H1 shop that I'd trust to do a Dmax swap correctly and they charge a confiscatory amount ($80k) to do it otherwise you're just itching for heartache. There's a reason why Alpha Hummers are at least $60k more expensive than < 2004 models... there's so much more to it than "just throw a dmax in it".

    I remember when the H1 Hummer was first on the market. At the time I found it less than attractive, at least next to the Toyota Land Cruiser, or the Chevy Suburban. But my favourite features of the H1 were the 6.5 litre turbo diesel engine, and the 4 wheel independent suspension. It's something every SUV should've been offered with. I was *beyond* disappointed when it was discontinued in favour of the Hummer H2. While I found it more attractive than the H1, it didn't have either the 6.5 litre turbo diesel engine, nor the 4 wheel independent suspension that the H1 came standard with.
