I went through the course for driving these at Camp Pendleton back in '89. There wasn't much that they couldn't do-straight up gravel mountains, through water that was over the hood etc. Then I was given charge of our platoons hmmwv, I was proud of it like it was my own. I used to go to motor-t to wash it and wipe it down with brake fluid. 😂

So wide on the outside, it feels almost claustrophobic on the inside tho. Might be fun to drive a few time for fun but get boring after a while. Still nice to watch!
It's not exactly the vehicle you'd want to drive daily, but to be fair it was never designed to be a comfortable commuter car.
I daily drive mine. It's never boring to drive. Mine is a bit more souped up than the one in the video but its still slow - but anytime you get 8800 lbs moving with a noisy diesel roaring right next to your knee, it's a thrill. Never gets old.

Dimensionally it's not all that large. It's only 1/4" wider than a ford raptor and its shorter overall than a Toyota Camry. When you see one in person they definitely have a "presence" but unless it's on 40's it doesn't really seem huge. Of course I see one everyday so I might be used to it.

The Hummer was my first dream vehicle before I drifted over to the Chevrolet Avalanche. The last time I was in a Hummer, it was very tight and I did not like how it felt. Good video although.

Aw c'mon. The H1 Hummer here is driven only on paved roads where any car would do. I recall my western vacations in a rented car during the H1's heyday. I saw roads that would take me where I'd like to go and was intimidated by that road's horrible condition, logging road for instance. Ooh, I wished I had one of these iron beasts to take me there.
I recall reading that the H1 has high cabin noise and this video bears that out. Nevertheless it would be so nice to be in such a bad road conquering vehicle when needed.

This is a perfect vehicle to apply the social distancing rule. There is so much space in that thing. But it’s hard to keep a social distance with other cars tho. If you don’t drive carefully, the consequences can be fatal for another driver. Specially if you hit someone in an early 2000 Hyundai Accent. Lol.

Something starting sound like Tank tracks after passing 40 mph :) I was huge fan of this trucks but its really like road train. I can feel that fuel wasting drivetrain... It's so big but cabin is so tight... Engine is at middle of this truck...
The H1 is meant to mostly go off-road so that's why the engine is lifted into the cabin for adequate ground clearance and the reason it's wide is it has to fit into tank tracks to reduce the amount of off-roading as the tracks flatten the ground

Jesus, that thing is a freaking truck! And by truck I mean a lorry, I'm European, we don't say truck to pick-up's :D (Because the biggest pick-up available here is the Ford Ranger Raptor, think about it)..Oh and also it has a ship engine O_o What a sound :)

My truck has a P400 in it with a bigger turbo that makes about 280hp. It'll do 80 on the highway. Do I want to do 80 on the highway? No. First of all the tire noise is incredible. They're MT's and they're not designed to go that fast in truth. Then there's the brakes. They do not inspire confidence at that speed. Finally there's the overheating vortex created at speeds > 55mph due to the vertical windshield. In effect, the hummers/humvees create a swirling vortex in front of the truck where cool air cannot flow over the radiators. If you run your truck at 80mph for longer than an hour or so your temp gauge is going to climb. Remember they don't have Intercoolers either (unless its like mine and has an aftermarket one).
You should try driving this thing in downtown where there is a lot of traffic. That would be a challenge. Lol.
