Dear Mary Ann Beaulieu9709 and earlier in this thread a coupla days ago referring back to my years-old complimentary comments on Ms Sainte Marie's long-running and most significant track record this exchange:
@Game Greed replied: "@ulpana "She fooled so many people thinking she was Native the truth finally comes out that she is not native at all not even a little bit she felt the need to lie and say that she was born in Canada..."
I respect where your criticism is coming from. As a resident of the Portland, Ore area where muck raking investigative journalist who has specialized in analyzing prominent institutionally connected "PRETENDIANS" Jacqueline Keeler is based.
Jacqueline Keeler hasn't engaged in GOTCHA journalism. She is more interested in examining how a fake credit on a resume can advance careers of professionals who then are in a position to reshape Public Interest policies, or simply advance their own Private Interests.
Here is Jacqui Keeler's paper trail of documentation on the merits of her analytically-based work:
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacqueline_Keeler
      muckrack.com/jacqueline-keeler
I am used to hearing her discussing First Nations his\herstory on our non-commercial listener-sponsored radio station KBOO, where she is regularly sourced by the News Dept and also co-hosts a general news program on Wednesday Mornings with founding co-host Paul Roland and audio archived on the station's web-site:
      kboo.fm/media/113174-welcome-back-jacqueline-keeler-former-co-host-talks-paul-about-her-ongoing-research
Ironically Paul Roland (who has excellent taste in selecting well-written\composed\played songs and music to accent his themed weekly issues-based listener call-in community radio programs) with Jacqueline Keeler's expertise being First Nations issues as she is documented Navajo on one side of her family and Yankton Sioux on the other parents' side. She doesn't only cover the issues pertaining to PRETENDIANS. And until the CBC's new documentary that seeks to document Buffy Ste Marie's biological roots, Jacqueline Keeler has not raised Buffy as an example of a PRETENDIAN. More importantly, Jacqui Keeler has addressed the often-contradictory Socio-Economic issues involved when PRETENDIANS can also advance into positions to do real positive things for First Nations politically (as in the case of Democratic Party Presidential candidate Senator Elizabeth Warren the U.S. Senator representing Massachusetts where she is a Professor at Harvard, albeit Senator Warren was born and raised in Oklahoma).
Although a true Public Interest-centered reformer against institutional corruption, the fact that early in her academic teaching career Elizabeth Warren listed herself as being part Cherokee, Professor and now Senator Warren was attacked for being a PRETENDIAN, which undermined her Populist Reform credibility and she did not ever get very far above 3% in Democratic Party polling and Presidential Primaries running against Bernie Sanders and the far more credibility compromised life-long Senator from the Banking and Corporate-friendly Laws of the legal fiction state of Delaware Joe Biden and other corporate-captured big D Democrats.
When another commenter here wrote to crow about the revelations in this new documentary film on Buffy Ste Marie and exposing solid documentation that indeed Buffy has zero First Nations blood and that she may have conspired with her Hollywood lawyer to blackmail her Massachusetts brother Alan Santamaria, an ethnically Italian-American into ceasing to write letters to editors claiming Buffy (originally named Beverly Santamaria) was the natural born sibling of Alan and their sister Heidi Santamaria's ethnically Italian-American parents in Massachusetts and she was not adopted by them from the Canadian First Nations Piapot Cree family with whom a young Beverly aka Buffy sought out and clearly committed herself to a life-long relationship that benefited both sides of the biological and socio-economic DIVIDE, well the often internal contradictions of trying to do right by the his\herstory of the decimated First Nations in North and Central and South America came to the fore.
All I can offer as to why I agree with so many who maintain that with any or all such faults and personal deceptions. Even perhaps her criminal black-mailing of her brother Alan by her lawyer and herself who threatened to expose him as an alleged pedophile and abuser of childhood Buffy whose actions and uncertainty about the circumstances of her conception Ms Ste Marie has a few days ago offered in online interviews as her reason for "Going Native."
All I can offer for my own enduring admiration of the "works" side of the recording artist and educator of First Nations his\herstory known as Buffy Ste Marie is the acerbic gist of Jill Sobule's song warning us to not turn our creative muses into Hollywood "Heroes" or "Sheroes":
      th-cam.com/video/xlsAdYjUzI4/w-d-xo.html
Give a listen and consider the his\herstorical examples Jill Sobule provides so long before this biology-based scandal was raised to tarnish Buffy Ste Marie's long and productive life lived in service to First Nations issues:

      Health and balance to all,
especially the harmed Santamaria aka Ste Marie family, certainly the self-harm that now 82 year young Buffy Ste Marie may have caused or that her brother Alan did indeed cause to Buffy in their Massachusetts other-wise privileged suburban youth.

She could so clearly see the interconnection of all people when she wrote "Universal Soldier" after seeing Vietnam vets while she was stranded at SFO. . . and when my father and I were stranded at SFO, in the 2000s, I remember thinking of her and how that very-common circumstance (due to San Francisco's unpredictable weather) had been the inspiration for such a heartfelt song.

Why have I only just discovered this documentary? I've absolutely loved Buffy since first hearing Indian Cowboy as a small child - and then only slightly later seeing her on Sesame Street. As a young "half-breed" Saskatchewan child, it was so wonderful to see someone who had the same skin colour as me on television! I felt I could take on the world! (And breastfeeding her child on television? OMG! Rock on!!!) A little over a year ago, she blessed our family with kindness and generous spirit, as well. My cousin is among the missing Indigenous women of Canada, and her daughters have taken to drumming as a way of coping. Buffy met with them, discussed their mother, as well as their drumming, and I know those young women came away from meeting such a powerful voice for Native people feeling renewed. Not only is she a talented woman, she is filled with such grace and kindness. Thank you, Buffy, for all you have done and continue to do.

Its okay, really. You can love and embrace her as ever before.
I'm 100 percent Indigenous. Or close to it. She got caught in a lie. Those lies may have garnered some things like awards, a bit of money in sales, status, privileges, but her own country subdued her and oppressed her. Put her on an FBI blacklist of some sort. Kneecapped her career and prevented her songs from airplay and being sold etc... So much of it evens out, and she experienced what it is to be an Indian. She was wrong in lying and if she won an award on her own merits. So be it. Recognize and rescind whatever needs to be and move on. I see some family and band members have long adopted her, and stand by her. I know many that call themselves Indian and are not but we raised em and adopted them so we don't care. Let them call themselves Indian; is it so important that we bring that out? Oh heck, we're Indians we'll call them white or whatever in our language (Nado' in mine lol.) when we get in a heated fight with them but that's usually washed away with the wind. For 60 years she made our people say hey look what we can do if we put our mind to it. Indians can be musicians and stars. She entertained us for 60 years and brought pride to us. That cannot be taken back or given back. We basked in it and lived with that pride for our collective lifetimes. Thank you Buffy. Maybe it was based on a lie but the effects on our lives was real, the pride and self worth as a people that was bestowed on us was real. I live it now. It's good. I don't think she hurt anyone. But all those little girls and non native little girls and boys that she inspired and became musicians and stars, I think they should just be happy and grateful and ignore all this, so should we. This is up to Buffy Saint Marie to come to grips with. She probably has. She wants to be called Indian, I for one will call her Indian. Come on, we're the Greatest Nation ever. We were 100 million strong and did brain surgery a thousand years before the New World Doctors. We built pyramids before the Egyptians. We got stoned on our own healthy drugs and got drunk on our own healthy drinks because we lived in God's country where with the Buffalo and the fish off the shores, and agriculture galore food was aplenty and so was health and well being. We're damned good looking and beautiful people with brains and talent. There will be others that want to be called Indian, there always will be. Let em. BTW Buffy Saint Marie was an activist for our people her gender, kids, the hippies. . . . fought for peace when her country wanted war. I'll take her.

Doesn't change the fact that she has some good songs. bad actress. bad actor.... but she's a good musician but so were ike turner, john lennon, michael jackson (still not sure i believe all that one but...), and so many other terrible people. The worst bit was the whole revelation that she threatened her brother with false abuse accusations if he persisted in trying to get the truth about her out. I fell in love with Buffy the first time I heard her. I was in Fairbanks Alaska, a Geology grad student, and finally in my own cabin in the woods near the University. It was a fall day, one of those shiny warm leaves falling days that only occurs right before the cold comes later in the month. Her songs were brash, knife sharp, that go to your conscience! I heard later that Nixon black balled her. To me that was her power. She spoke truth to power and paid for it. They say you are known by your enemies. It is relevant today and I love to play her songs here in Korea. It brings me back to a special time in my life. Thank you Buffy for you inspiration. I did not know that you wrote that love song. She may have sincerely adopted indigenous culture and promoted it in her songs but she was born Italian in Massachusetts, USA. She became very successful as an indigenous singer and profited financially from it. In the face of exposure with evidence such as a legitimate birth certificate, she just double-down on her made-up story. No shade on people who enjoy her music, but just be aware of Buffy Sainte-Marie’s real identity.

Beautiful documentary about a great artist. 15.09 Buffy Sainte-Marie about the sixties: "It was a time when new ideas, original thinking, were not only tolerated but were sort of expected. And it wasn't about folk music really, that's how everybody marked it. It was really about students. It was really a free speech movement. It was exciting, it was almost like the excitement before a highschool football game. You had a sense of the studentbody all over the streets. There was a sense of 'the suits are in trouble now', you know, 'because we have discovered our brains'. And the suits were in trouble! And they never forgave us for it." There's the parallel between the sixties and today.

yes! the free speech movement instigated the upkeep of the Constitution! It's gardeners were the youth of the day. They watered that garden of freedom to speak. Thank you Lord for all the plants, creepers flowers and fruits in that garden!🌻
Blessed are the peace makers for they inherit the earth. It is not that the brave fighters had to lay down their lives for such a system that would revoke our right to speech. That possible infiltration of hypocrisy (though tenuous), was being weeded out. The soldiers who happily came back were met by the poets, beats, hippies, new agers, & free thinkers with respect. Still the point was not to have to sacrifice ANY MORE in useless, horrible, scary war tactics that annihilated INNOCENTS.
And the draft resistance youth had to be tough. They were also handsome, bright, talented, physically fit citizens, but just not agreeable to participating in foreign invasions on foreign soil, killing blameless persons, ordered by men in high positions who didn't go to the war zones at all, EVER, some of them.
So while being perfectly healthy in mind & body, the free speech artists had to be very clever and bold, to resist the draft, and on top of that, speak, sing and write and perform their work to please audiences. They had to generate enthusiasm and attention for the higher cause without stepping on anyone's toes so to speak.
Fats Waller..."your feets too big!"...(that type of artistic liberty).
It was such an energizing time, as EVERYONE HAD SOMETHING TO SAY!
AND SOMETIMES ALSO EVERYONE LISTENED TO WHAT OTHERS WERE SAYING!
Hare Krishna. Thank you Buffy St. Marie. May you always be heard. May you inspire the upkeep of free speech.
May our speech and song always be the cause of liberation from sufferings for all creatures.

@@tulayamalavenapi4028 What "soldiers who happily came back [and] were met by the poets, beats, hippies, new agers, & free thinkers with respect"?
That's as enormous an untruth as Buffy's autobiography has turned out to be. 🤦🏾‍♀️

That all turned out to be a crock of shit when they went after Trump while ignoring actual war criminals.

This hits different now. She really leans into the Native accent and whatever her wail or warble is that she calls "singing." Now it just sounds like she's always been making fun of Native American singing and music, when I go back and listen to her.

Fascinating, so many moments that make me take notice, the rapport artists like Baez, Cash, Dylan had with her .... she is a life force,, Buffy's strong mindedness coupled with moments when she's almost self-deprecating.... but she knows her worth,... this doc is a joy to experience. I've always seen Sainte-Marie as a consciousness raiser, an educator, she has such a large outlook , and her songs and approach to living and art, her stunning courage, give others wings.
