She always inspired me and lots of 60/70s contemporaries that changes could happen as we saw people our age in America going off to war we had Donovan, Dylan,Baez, then couples went on dates to see Soldier Blue at local cinemas and maybe talked about the film next day at work,Thankyou Dear Buffy - what inspiring anti - war music the only most of us kids could protest in any way…..
Buffy and Tanya bring my soul to the earth. I was born and raised on the shield and it is a rough life here at times. I see so many struggling people. This is a song of strength. Power in the voices of ladies.
Buffy Ste Marie has never turned in a bad performance in her long career. Hearing her with Tanya Tagaq is a treat for for the Spirits! Sounds like the echoes of the history of all North America
Her best performance is that she is Italian American and lying thru her liberal teeth for decades passing off her garbage music along with her identity. Her and Warren should take their act on the road.
What a bunch of hogwash, she was fake Indian who's performance was threatening her real family for 40 years with shame if they dared tell the world her real background. So according to you, fake Indians can treat the "spirits" !
She has no native blood , she’s a fake. Fifth Estate found irrefutable proof. This woman brought awareness to natives but also got paid thousands more than other folk singers and received aboriginal awards she shouldn’t have accepted. Her white family is also interviewed and have pictures of this white woman growing up as a child in America.
Dave Brunner thanks for the spelling check. Here’s a little factoid for ya, native people usually refer to themselves using the plural. It’s something we trip over from time to time. Again thanks for set’n this ol’ndn straight kola’.
The Indigenous style choral section was so powerful, those chants didn’t use actual words, but why is it words without a linguistic meaning can have that much stirring power over those that do!
Yep I got into Buffy Sainte-Marie's music in the 80's when I was into Metallica etc and not long after reading Dee Brown's Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee. I used to listen to BS-M's 'Coincidence and Likely Stories' alongside Master of Puppets and '...And Justice For All'. They both tell the same stories of a society that underneath is very nasty. Naomi Kleins books 'Shock Doctrine' on neoliberalism and 'This Changes Everything' on climate change are the kind of books that go along with Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee as they speak of the excesses of greed and power at the expense and suffering of a great many people. Neoliberalism at its heart seems to have that same self righteousness as manifest destiny. Anyway some nice grounding native music are the intertribals, Black Lodge Singers and Buffy's track 'Darling Don't Cry'. th-cam.com/video/rs8NJI9cVd4/w-d-xo.html
I listened to Buffy when I was in my early teens. I'm nearly 70 now and am watching & listening to her again after all those years. How amazing she STILL is!!
I've done only one pilgrimage in my life, and that's when me and my girlfriend went on our first road trip to see Buffy St. Marie perform live. I guess here in the backwaters Scandinavia people didn't know who she was. Oh, woe is them. But we knew her and how awesome she is and we had the best summer ever.
This song brings tears to my eyes and a rush of strength to my heart. No one can take away our culture, our spirit and who we are in this universe!! Lots of love
You're mind is Connected to the Universe and I have always derived great spiritual energy & transformative experiences listening to you from early in the 80's!
Well the truth just took her's away (she is a full fledged fake Indian that lied and threatened family to keep the secret)... so maybe your comment hasn't aged very well....
I have lived in Alaska most of my life driving sled dogs. I first heard this song in a movie long ago about George Attla, the famous dog musher from the interior of the State (who is my dog mushing hero and friend). This song for 35 years has been my favorite and I have had family looking for a copy of it all these years . The Movie, Spirit of the Wind which she sings a number of songs in is my absolute favorite movie. A friend finally let me know about the song being here and I told him that just days before I said to myself before I die I want to get a copy of this song. Buffy Sainte- Marie sings with true spirit of the wind. Made my day. Thanks, Stan

I gotta try and check out the movie. This song brings out a deep drive to dump the lower 48 and run for my dream of perusing my life in rural AK. City people suck only worry about money and how to screw each other. It ain't right. P.S. if you're the Stan I'm thinking of in Tannana, I wish you well😊

Amazing, haunting, beautiful, inspiring. I saw the film with this song back in '83. (Spirit of the Wind) Tracked down the makers - a couple of geniuses who took a handful of people out in the wilderness and literally put this together with a couple of cameras. But then they ran out of money and though they finished the film, they were broke and sold the rights, so it was never released in the US. I got in touch with Buffy many years ago to see if she would ever be interested in doing these songs on her own. We had a sincerely mutually anguished conversation regarding how lame it was that the film, 'Spirit', had been released in France but not in the US. And now, here it is. I cannot believe this is online now - thank you, thank you - there is a God.
I think the 'Ronde' dog sled race people in Anchorage sell this film. Google, 'Ronde', along with 'Spirit of the Wind'. Also - check Amazon, but make sure you get the right film - (I think 'Spirit of the Wind' is also the name of another film or book that came up when I checked on Amazon.)
........"flY Buffy FLY"......I am so pleased that you are still performing - in top form.........you haven't changed - LoVe YouR MuSiC.........say's the man from LondoN......
My heart is saddened by the darkness of the thought of the day we the earth loose such a warrior of truth, justice, compassion, and commitment to the betterment of all creation ,God help us when we no longer have a consciousness such as BUFFY to meditate upon!

I can't play this fewer than three times in a row. :) It gets me UP!! I've always loved Buffy, but as I begin to push 70, I appreciate her more and more.
72 here. Same. Life force. Must dance and move and be renewed. These two women so glad they are on this planet keeping us awake, inspiring us now. Gratitude!
Buffy Sainte-Marie, powerful Spirit Woman, and all with you - thank you. Beautiful. Powerful. Keeping all of us energized to continue standing up, speaking out, holding the line.
Not often I am speechless at a song, but oh my god I'm speechless. That was absolutely phenomenal. I usually listen to Tanya Tagaq but have never hear Buffy, but now I will definitely be listening to more of her. Such a powerful song!!! Much love over to you from a Sámi brother in Norway 💙
After listening to this I channelled these words. I have no control over this, but when I get the signal to write I have to write. I'm going home back to the plains where the bison run free back to the people to whom I belong to sit by the fire and sing my native song. I hear their call to be at one with the tribe it's where my soul was born I connect with the energy I'm at one with their vibe. I am an outcast displaced without a choice being kept silent searching many lifetimes to find my voice. It's time mankind listened shut off the noise I have something to say I will speak loud I will speak clear you will need to take the time to hear I've accommodated you and your selfish ways I have taken my power back within me it now stays. Do not walk over me because I will no longer hide I have found my inner strength I have found my pride. Words by: Steve Carroll
Dont know that Buffy will ever see these comments. She has such importance in the workd to be so uplifting inspirational, originally gifted and talented to the point when i firat heard her song here i was hooked to know more. I listen to this song when i feel a type of way and anybother time i have a happy notion to. Buffy! I admire you and your strength. Thank u
Totally amazing. Powerful and shakes my insides. Whew!!!! Let me catch my breath. I love both Buffy and Tanya. Wish this video held more for Tanya, yet all of it is still perfect. PERFECT. PERFECT. What an incredible song.
thank you birds...it's not a question of "can I" but "when" ...everything is possible in life; nothing is beyond a human being reach..."is it right?" that is the question.
Is Buffy your grandma? I was wondering if she'd give online beginner's lessons on how to make and get started playing a mouth bow. I remember being a little girl watching Sesame Street and wanting to play one and how beautiful she was with her long, black hair with feathers in it. I love how she was also innovative in electronic music and digital art, 2 things I've been interested in, since young. :)
what these too women are doing aurally and creatively....gives me chills....feels like my first powwow when I was 8 blended with a modern and fresh interpretation, transcending the old and the new. It feels like after going to many powwows in my life not understanding the songs, and then suddenly something clicks and they are reaching through language and time, and you finally understand, and that message hits you like lightening...
I am currently reading a book by Tanya Tagaq...and then came here to listen to this again. I heard it on CBC Radio 2 a few years ago and it's soooo good!
I feel like a flea on a horse in the audience of this singer and band ,,very authentic ..Theres not a right point break long enough to ride this song out! Perfect surfing music ..Thanks
NOTE: SONG LYRICS BELOW I heard this song in late 1980 when I went to see Spirit of the Wind in Las Vegas, NV. I was so moved by both the movie and the song. I looked for it for many years to show up on one of Buffy's albums. With this special production I have to say it has been worth the wait. I grew up on a Reservation in Northern CA. Her albums were played over and over in school, and pretty much everywhere. I have followed her every since, about 47 years, I'd say. This song is so special and the words are so powerful, especially in Indian Country. I feel like they could really make a difference for anyone looking for hope. I found Polaris Podcast Episode 5 where she talks about the lyrics and from there, and listening to this song over and over, I transcribed what I am hearing. Please pardon any mistakes in structure or transcriptions. This format is not letting me lay it out as I would want to. Thanks Buffy for these powerful lyrics, and for introducing me to Tanya Tagaq. I'm a fan already. Also, for the shout-out to Standing Rock near the end of the song! YOU GOT TO RUN (SPIRIT OF THE WIND) Whether you're a women or whether you're a man, sometimes you got to take a stand. Just because you think you can, you got to run, you got to run. Whether you're a women or whether you're a man, sometimes you got to take a stand. Just because you think you can, you got to run, you got to run. Trying against the odds you're in a trance. Who did you think you are to have a chance? You're a no-one from a place where everyone knows your face. Come and go away, and they know the son. So you better hang on and hey, you better run. Cuz here's your chance and your race has begun. Down in a hole. You feel like two different people in your soul. Feel like a loser until you see that as you bend you learn to be your own best friend, and you learn how, and you learn when, to take a chance on the spirit of the wind. Whether you're a women or whether you're a man sometimes you got to take a stand. Just because you think you can, you got to run, you got to run. Babe, hey, we've been down. We've been so broken been so low that I kissed the ground. But you can see yourself a winner beyond the money and the greed. Beyond the pride is a pure and tested need to be a champion is more than luck and speed, it's power and freedom in the spirit of the wind. Whether you're a women or whether you're a man sometimes you got to take a stand. Just because you know you can, you got to run, you got to run. STANDING ROCK!
thank you for sharing the words to this powerful song that feels so empowering for these days we face... I really appreciate it for some go go juice to keep on keeping on....
You're right Thomas, this song is great for anyone looking for hope. It was pretty much my soundtrack as I applied for school last year, played it over and over. And now as a 55 year old indigenous woman I've been accepted into the program to become a counselor (taught by first nations teachers!). This song gave me the fire and courage to walk through my fears and go for it. I will always be grateful for this song. Thank you Buffy and Tanya and the other wonderful musicians!
Please BE PROUD OF YOUR HERITAGE, for your ancestors way of life has much more to be proud of than any other's. If only we would've left them alone, then maybe this continent would still have a chance. I read "Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee" when I was 12 and still cherish the fact that I finally got the FACTS about who did what...and my history books had it all wrong,
I wish they could come to Sioux Lookout Ontario and sing for us! POWERFUL. We need and the northern communities need to hear such a powerful voice!!!!!!!!

Did the movie get released in Canada?
I think the 'Ronde' dog sled race people in Anchorage sell this film. Google, 'Ronde', along with 'Spirit of the Wind'. Also - check Amazon, but make sure you get the right film - (I think 'Spirit of the Wind' is also the name of another film or book that came up when I checked on Amazon.)
Here's hoping the renewed interest in the song also renews interest in the film...
........"flY Buffy FLY"......I am so pleased that you are still performing - in top form.........you haven't changed - LoVe YouR MuSiC.........say's the man from LondoN......

My heart is saddened by the darkness of the thought of the day we the earth loose such a warrior of truth, justice, compassion, and commitment to the betterment of all creation ,God help us when we no longer have a consciousness such as BUFFY to meditate upon!

I stumbled upon her music two days ago and I love it!
I love this talented person very wise and creative !!!!
More than ever now, the voices of these women must be heard.
I have always loved Buffy Sainte-Marie her music, her voice since I came to this country, Canada as an immigrant from Germany.
I can't play this fewer than three times in a row. :) It gets me UP!! I've always loved Buffy, but as I begin to push 70, I appreciate her more and more.
Wow are we the same on that!
72 here. Same. Life force. Must dance and move and be renewed. These two women so glad they are on this planet keeping us awake, inspiring us now. Gratitude!
Living in her hometown! Lots of people around here are proud of that fact.
Buffy Sainte-Marie, powerful Spirit Woman, and all with you - thank you. Beautiful. Powerful. Keeping all of us energized to continue standing up, speaking out, holding the line.
Powerful Fake you mean. Spitting at her own real family must be the new "holding the line".
Happy Birthday Buffy! Wonderful interview with Pia Chattopadhyay and here because Buffy herself chose this song to end the interview

Blessings And Truth For All.
@@candyrosefreeman7232 Truth is Buffy real name is Elizabeth Warren (another fake Indian).
After listening to this I channelled these words. I have no control over this, but when I get the signal to write I have to write.
I'm going home
back to the plains
where the bison run free
back to the people
to whom I belong
to sit by the fire
and sing my native song.
I hear their call
to be at one with the tribe
it's where my soul was born
I connect with the energy
I'm at one with their vibe.
I am an outcast
displaced without a choice
being kept silent
searching many lifetimes
to find my voice.
It's time mankind listened
shut off the noise
I have something to say
I will speak loud
I will speak clear
you will need to take the time
to hear
I've accommodated you
and your selfish ways
I have taken my power back
within me
it now stays.
Do not walk over me
because I will no longer hide
I have found my inner strength
I have found my pride.

thank you birds...it's not a question of "can I" but "when" ...everything is possible in life; nothing is beyond a human being reach..."is it right?" that is the question.
Great musicians all around but I gotta say, what a killer drummer! Super playing Maxwell.

AW IM SO HAPPY FOR MY GRANDMA!!
I’m in a laundromat listening to this peacefully folding away when Buffy kicked my ass with this song. Holy!!!!! Wow amazing!
omg! thank u everyone involved (tears here)
Again she gets right to the soul that is us
You Italian, paisan? 🇮🇹

What an ingenious collaboration. Buffy and Tanya, I play this song when I feel my lowest and you lift me up.
I am currently reading a book by Tanya Tagaq...and then came here to listen to this again. I heard it on CBC Radio 2 a few years ago and it's soooo good!
YAY Buffy!! And I love Tanya getting involved, the 2 of them a beautifull blend!! It would be a great time to bring back "Protest Song"!!

INTENSE !
Thomas Lamar Farnum o
I keep wondering if it is..."a pure and tested reed" would fit in with the "as you bend" ...
thank you for sharing the words to this powerful song that feels so empowering for these days we face...
I read "Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee" when I was 12 and still cherish the fact that I finally got the FACTS about who did what...and my history books had it all wrong,
God bless you,B.S.Marie. We're all related, we're sons of the Universe
this amazing woman is one of my heroes.
Buffy is still great. I'm an old man and a old fan.
The Buff rules. If she's ever on Van island, I'll be there
A beautiful song with a story. Wish you well.
