She marketed herself as a Cree woman from SK her entire career.
This is not true . . . and she knew it.

Sorry. But she lied, and the evidence is overwhelming. She knew the truth, and chose to benefit instead from a career based on pretending she was something that she was not. What upsets me the most about this whole situation is that there must have been something in her that thought she could do better than a real Aboriginal person. So she went for it. There's a lot of hidden narcissism in her. Her mockery is demonic in nature. To fool and take advantage of the First Nations for 50 years is cruel. As if the Native American Nations haven't suffered enough injustice and lies for the past 500 years. No one is disputing her talent as a songwriter. But did she have to pretend to be an Indigenous person? She could have always been herself and still help the Native Nations without having to pretend to be one of them. There's something so dark about that. She shone a false light for decades. Similar to the story of Lucifer. I know she helped many Native people but at what cost? Being "nice" is not the same as being a good person. Not only does my heart break for the Native Nations that believe in her, but also for her Italian/English American real family. 💔

I think the good deeds that she did for native people were done to keep suspicion about her at bay. It would be hard to question someone even if you had the slightest doubt when they’re setting up scholarships, etc. She did these things while at the same time she stole awards in music over and over again to further her own career. Yes I am sure she is a narcissist. It’s interesting watching her earlier interviews with hindsight. She manages to giggle and be glib while at the same time slagging off almost every other musician including Pete Seeger.

@@lindajones8101 yes you are so right. Her good deeds towards the Native Nations were probably deeds to cover herself up at all angles. I believe she was strategically managed well through this whole lie for 50 years. I don't think she's necessarily bright enough to pull this off for so long on her own. I'm sure she had plenty of high level management behind her supporting her lies so they could all make money off this mockery. And let's not forget that each award she won, she had to apply for to begin with, and she also received money and grants from these awards that should've gone to indigenous artists. Now she's living in Hawaii in her fancy house and she's lived there for a while now. Living like a star. This story is so typical actually. She's part of that whole Hollywood elite probably. My heart goes out to all the people that believed her BS. It's all so sad. And now looking back at her old interview footage back in the 70s, the whole thing seems ever more dark than ever. Especially her appearance in sesame street and her silly foolish disco song where she's wearing feathers and doing weird poses while dancing. It now all becomes so ridiculous and so disrespectful. I cannot even fathom the shock people must feel from all this.

@@bevmacdonald9008 If she was "born on the wrong side of the blanket", as she says her mom said, it would mean that her mom had an affair from which Buffy was born - NOT that she was adopted by them, which is the lie Buffy still gives. Her story is unsupportable - TOTALLY. Her likely BS story about what her mom supposedly said was a good try, but it doesn't hold up. The birth certificate puts that to rest. There is also ZERO evidence whatsoever about her sexual abuse claims. The probability of her being a selfish psycho is EXTREMELY high. You want things to be "definitive". Good luck with that in just about anything historical. She can make up all sorts of BS lies even if she got a DNA test that proved she is zero indigenous. She made a great story. So did J.K. Rowling. Also, consider that her childhood was coming out of the 1940's, still trying to re-build after the Great Depression. Her folk-music career started in the 60's in what was a male-dominated music and media industry. Still is pretty much. // But anyway, Buffy still played her cards and created a state persona. Of course it was wrong to claim a minority culture, a sort of "singing red-face," minstrel of the "oppressed." What really shows me Bluffy's true colours is her horrific treatment of her brother, threatening him with lawsuits and a smear campaign for telling the truth about her identity--and right befiore she appeared on Sesame Street! 😢. As an actual Sixties Scoop survivor who watched her on that show as a child and saw her as a role model, I feel angry and betrayed by Bluffy's charade. In hindsight I can see now her supreme confidence and creative output is totally inconsistent with the lifelong trauma, CPTSD and identity crisis that accompanies being stolen from one's Indigenous family. Seeing her now just makes me cringe.

(Swedish, so never mind the spelling) Your words really resonated with me, and your conclusion regarding the nonindiginous/privilliged confidence in taking on the world as she did, falsly presenting herself as Native - which I believe also stems directly from pure narcissism. Narcissist "super power" if you will. It takes a very detached individual to keep such a fraud going over half a century, while creating and upholding all those relations. They mimic "real people" while lacking that human core where Conscience resides. In its place - a dark void. And THAT'S fundamentally scary.
I acknowledge the profound pain and sense of betrayal, no, the ACTUAL betrayal, and what it does to the native collective and individually, with regards to the issue of trust, identity and memory. You all did NOT deserve this! 💛
(Also it's obvious she did those statements/adjusted the narrative and retired from performing knowing very well what was coming and when, after a year of professional research and formal inquiries from CBC. As obvious now as all that self tanning cream and redish foundation)

I agree. I first knew about her because of the song 'Qu'appelle Valley Saskatchewan", which aired regularly on the CBC radio in Manitoba. It sends chills down someone's spine. This led me to look up that name, a few years back. The story about being from Saskatchewan made sense. I simply noticed she had been banned from the US, which can be interpreted as a badge of honor, the battle scar of a courageous resistance figher. I still enjoy listening to this great song, but the sight of an imposter disguised as the stereotype of an Indigenous person bothers me. The words "You can travel all alone, or you can come along with me" resonate differently now. It will take a while for this to pass.

The treatment she showed her family was outrageous, she disowned them and threatened them criminally and civilly.
But at the end of the day, she took opportunities away from REAL BIOLOGICAL Indigenous people who might have won (and deserved) all those awards she falsely received.

I think she knew what reality was all along. Interesting to see that once her son took a DNA test and proved that he was DNA-related to her Italian family (would have no relation if she had been adopted), she started the public story that she AND HER SISTER were snatched away from the tribe in Canada and adopted out. She also jumped on the "me-too" bandwagon and declared herself a survivor of sexual abuse, but only when it gained her some social media sympathy and a possible explanation for the truth her brother had told before he died. Her changing stories through the years show a calculated attempt to cover up her lies. The fact that she eventually suggested her own MOTHER may have had an extramarital affair with an indigenous man-- THAT IS HORRID. She has thrown everyone around her under the bus of her own deceitful career: her own family, indigenous artists who deserved the awards she got, sexual abuse survivors-- it goes on and on. The good she did can NOT cover up the bad she did.

The '60's was a completely different world than the world is today! There were many exciting, creative ideas that many people used as gimmicks, to further their careers, blind to ANY possible repercussions. Now days, there are many legal and ethical pitfalls that have taken center stage as major taboos, that can seriously impact, damage and impede someone's livelihood, given the perpetual, menacing threat of rampant cancel culture in our present day society! Perhaps, lots of up and coming aspiring people, from 60:years ago, did not have the foresight to see the possibility of how these creative choices, amid changing ideas and ways of living, could, eventually, severely come back to haunt them?! My question would be: Was it just the '60's mentality of promoting oneself that morphed into a phenomenon, unto itself; OR was this decision to conceal her true origins TRAUMA BASED, due to an event that happened to her, rooted in childhood, perhaps suffering at the hands of a family member, friend or someone in her original community?! I have seen symptoms of CPTSD manifest in the survivor as a rejection of many or even ALL aspects, (beliefs, names, national origins, customs, etc.), pertaining to the family and/or community of origin!

This is Louis Buffy Parry here detailing the circumstances of my names "Buffy" and "Buff" and how proud I am to share this name with a goddess, Buffy Sainte-Marie. She is my female doppelganger, except I can't sing---but my poetry and lyrics can.
My maternal grandfather Louis Koers named me Buffalo the day I was born. My Buffy and Buff names were subsequently born out of this Buffalo moniker. When I was around 11 or 12 years old I experienced Buffy Sainte-Marie for the first time when I watched her perform with the mouth bow on a TV program. Given that I was named Buffy by my mother, a mother whose name was Marie, it was to watch someone perform as she could, someone who had my and my mother's names, that was beyond coincidence and instead, was fully transcendent.
And I am convinced that my lifeline paralleling hers is also not coincidental. In fact, she has lived everywhere I have lived, starting in the Qu'Appelle Valley of Saskatchewan and moving on to Hawai'i where she lived and where I was stationed in the U.S. Air Force, in 1968-69. When I started the famous Honolulu Crossroads Sanctuary for U.S. soldiers our theme song was Buffy Sainte-Marie's "Universal Soldier".

I don' t think she was lying. Fake birth certificates were often filled out in Boston for adoptive parents with their names inserted in 1941 when Buffy was born. On the fifth estate so- called expose a picture was shown of what looked like her mother as a young girl and he said it was Buffy but it obviously looked nothing like her. It looked like her mother as a young girl. I think thats who it was. Yes she had a successful career in music. More power to her. I think if they ever do get her DNA (and I hope they don't because the results. if accurate and not tampered with, at this point would probably reveal the reason she doesn't look much like the rest of her family) or could be bought by the US government who damned her for "Universal Soldier" and if they still have Leonard Peltier who I believe to be innocent, what would they do to her, given the chance? It would be a grave mistake for her to take a DNA test now not because it would tell the truth, but because the results could be tampered with. The US government admits that it lies and attacks their own people. They call them black flag attacks. There have been many. I have always felt a lot of pain when the US used Native American warriors this way. Canada did too. They may have volunteered , because they answered that call when needed and I honor their sevice in defense of the land we share, but when it comes to murder for goods and land and money and power, well .... Buffy was right. I trust her over those who continually tear her down. Yes I do understand the anger, but if you feel that way its because you were manipulated by a supposed "documentary" video. It happens all the time. I dont blame you. I just ask you to really give some serious thought to all this with a clear mind and heart. This is click bait. Nowhere in this intereview did they get in depth about the controversy of her not being Native American. This was a softball interview, done by an interviewer who is an adoring fan. No doubt he's from that generation of "folkies" who look to entertainiers for truths, honesty, integrity and championing of causes. The trouble with this view is that the people who where singing protest songs, etc. during that time period were all de facto business people, in disguise. They all needed to have a schtick to sell to the public so that they could generate concert and record sales. Buffy, in this interview, displayed her propensity for exaggeration. She said that they didn't even have words for high tech in the 80s, and music. That is not true. Electronic synthesisers, MIDI and other stuff had been out, and modem based communications were out, and so was stuff like Quntum link (later to be called America Online.) She claims that it was like the primative age and that she was involved. This just sounds like a good sized exaggeration. She has a propensity for drama, and that commonly involves exaggeration. She needed a schtick to sell her music, and through her dramatic personality, created the Native American heritage thing, it appears. The folkie audience loved it. It gave them a "cause" which really appreciated (particularly the easily guilted white suburban kids.) She got her schtick and her podium, and that was a good recipe for selling concert tickets and records. Her personality is self indulgent, but she's smart enough to use causes, in combination with her attention need, so as to do something positive. She is an entertainer with a flair for drama, and capitalized on something that resonated with young people, at the time. Adding to this the Native Americans got a de facto pulbic relations agent with her presentations. Even if she was faking being Native American, that didn't negate that fact that the Native Americans were getting publicity boost. Of course they are going to go along with her, even when she's outed for not being Native American. If she truly were Native American, a simple DNA test would reveal that. And, if she were truly Native American, she'd be eager to get a DNA test, to put all of this controversy to rest. She's not doing that DNA test, as far as I know. You have to ask yourself: Why not ? She could easily avoid any future bad publicity if she'd just take the DNA test and prove her claim, if she'd not lying. If she's lying she's going to avoid the DNA test.

I don't care what color her skin is. I believe she only brought positive things to the tribes. I think that she drew attention to the tribes as human being and not scavengers. The Indian people need to Thank her, instead of degrading her and "OUTING" her. What are they getting out of hurting this lady? I think she is amazing and talented. If she is NOT Indian, maybe she should come forward and tell her reasons why. I choose to believe that she did this, if she is not Indian, it was only to help them, not hurt them. My God, he has blessed her with so much, look at her at 82 WOW!!! It does not appear to me that she has had any plastic surgery either. She is still of WIT and Youth!!! May God continue to bless you Buffy. I also believe if she comes out, IF SHE IS NOT INDIAN, people will understand why. They will still love her, her music and her motivations, as well. Those that wish to destroy this lovely lady, Shame to you!

Thank you. I have to go now. I am a 72 year old person of mixed racial descent ( and yes, some of my ancestors were tribal people from this side of the Atlantic) and also an adult disabled child. I have an ancient and active medicine wheel to try to protect again after having been led to leave it by a spirit bear, to learn more so I can do that more effectively, and a world full of both beauty and the stuff of nightmares that are deep in my bones and I must get back to cleaning up this horrible mess left by people who are trying to kill Great Spirit in their desparate and despicable ignorance. I will be ever grateful to Mama Mary Benson, who I refer to as the "Cherokee Rose of South Austin" who was a voting member of the Cherokee tribe for recognizing me ( her first words to me were (" I have known you a long long time" ) and sharing with me freely her knowledge and wisdom. She lives in my heart and my music. The TRUTH is of paramount importance but if you think you can get the whole of it from a dna test I believe you are wrong. Results can be faked and payoffs from the US government that requires such tests and is WORLD REKNOWN for their blatant lying and taking extreme measures to protect their own war machines and the stock market that profits so much from it are also not to be trusted. Buffy is wise not to stoop to having her Identity defined by a dna test (like some "breed" of dog) that can be faked, messed with etc. If she ever does decide to get one she should get several tests. PRIVATELY. There is NO privacy anymore on this internet and I have every reason not to trust even this "conversation" . So please excuse me now. Time to go. I do not call myself a Christian, but I love these words from a dear Jewish man fom thousands of years ago: " Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of Great Spirit." I prefer the words "Great Spirit" and include , for God is an old German exclamation for being hit on the head ( as in "Mien Gott"), or Wakentanka. If you are sincere who read this please join me in leaving this sad conversation. Too many words.

Hi, I'm an 82 year old Sicilian American artist, raised in Massachusetts in the 40's. I was not accepted by the white kids that I grew up with.
My father forbid me to say I was Sicilian American, so I grew up not wanting to be White. I was cruelly treated by kids and some adults. The pain and rejection caused me to associate with non white people. I don't think anyone in these comments has experienced this. This experience has changed my life. I can relate. Whatever the truth of Buffy's life, give her the benefit of her amazing talent! Thanks for listening!

This is extremely painful to watch. knowing the truth now, and listening to her one can hear how things are dodged and twisted.
And maybe a part of her at this point believes her own narrative ( although it changed so often through the years). When one has gone so deep for so long, I don't know how they can find a way out of it graciously. The power in her songs, her music still gives me chills. So much talent. But the deception and also the horrible way she treated her actual biological family, the threats if they exposed her, adds such a very dark spin on it all. I think this is going to take a long time to come to terms with. So, so sad.

As a lad growing up in in the UK during the 40s and 50s, our source of entertainment was the cinema, often with cowboy films, often featuring a white hero, protecting the white settlers, from the indigenous 'redskins', often depicted as the uncivilised savages.
I took that idea at face value, and it stayed with me until the early 70s, when one evening, my wife and I went to cinema, to watch the film, 'Soldier Blue'.
This was a story, set in the 19th century, depicting the US Cavalry attacking an indigenous encampment, including their women and children in appalling graphic detail.
It was accompanied by the song, 'Soldier Blue', sung by Buffy Sainte-Marie, which was haunting and full of emotion.
This film had a profound effect on my thinking of the subject, in the manner in which this indigenous race, was presented with admirable human values, albeit different to our own, but sustainable, generous, and deeply spiritual with a deep respect for the environment, and belief that no one person owned the land, but passed over it, leaving but the lightest touch.
It was white people, who had travelled to their lands, who with the greed of some, who were the savages, who herded the indigenous peoples into reservations, treating them as lesser beings, whilst the indigenous peoples were the ones who had a more civilised outlook.
As a result, America has developed into a highly materialistic part of the world, where the dollar is king, and Donald Trump thinks he is.
At the time, the makers of this film were courageous in releasing it, and it was a message which needed to be told, though to this day indigenous people are still often viewed as second rate, in what was fo millenia, therr home land.
For the remainder of us, there is much we would learn from them.

Let me reiterate once again, in the 50s, and 60s Indian people were not allowed and denied participation in any movement that will inspire the younger generations. It was intentional to Psychologically attempt to strip the spiritual identity of the Indian people. I would not be surprised if she was coached to play the role, thinking at the time colonialism had everything under control. Only she knows that within herself, it was done to deceive the public that Indian people have just as much right to exposure as everyone else. She is none Indian, not saying this to offend her. She didn't take anything away from anybody.
