I love Holmes on Homes. We HAVE the materials, we HAVE the knowledge.... what we don't have, is people that give a damn about their work these days. I also remember tile baths in Europe that lasted for decades! Imagine an all tiled, deep walk in BATHTUB! They KNEW how to do things right, with worse materials. Today? Throw it together and run. I have watched this show for years.... and applied all this knowledge to my own house. I purposely bought an older house, and it has (had) less problems, mostly 37 years of wear and tear.

Theres a lot of guys and girls out there who can and will do good work, that care and want to do it right. Sadly most of them get exploited and abused by cheap employers and customers until they either no longer care, or leave the industry entirely

so actually- I DON"T think it is a matter of having people that don't care- I believe it runs higher to CORPORATIONS who say get it done, get out and move on to the next one- those people who care are squashed and eventually have the air evacuated from their lungs so they finally give in to corporate "standards"

only recently stumbled over this channel/dude/group and yep , despite not being a carpenter or such just by following material instructions and common sense i could do better then 99% of the stuff seen in the states , honestly most of it looks like its just a money drain of endless patch work to stop it from falling apart like , roof material that looks like a small sneeze blow it away , wall construction that just bleed heat or is ticking time bombs of mold and is just waiting to fall apart as there is no real timber , or real beams , just playwood and slap dash crap everywhere not even worth the cash asked for the houses in material costs a empty yard price and importing a 'construction kit' from europe be better :/
at least the ones i seen of holmes it looks like a fragment of people still want to build professional , so it last and respects materials

But now you have to have a front-load washer, because due to the water conservation nonsense of the so-called "environmentalists", the top-loaders do not get your clothes clean anymore, I think I read something about that in _Consumer Reports._
Also, if they can make a dishwasher that is also a dish-dryer, then why can't they make washing machines that then dry your clothes without having to remove them to another machine? Or would such a machine have problems and not last very long?

Waterproofing a tiled shower on top of a wooden floor requires good materials and professional workmanship. It certainly should not have failed within less than 5 years. I wonder, what is the design life span of the new waterproofing system? In Europe we are used to tiled bathrooms lasting 30 to 50 years.

It shows that the Builder was more concerned about timeline and costs than doing the job correctly. It is absolutely scary to think that just about every new home built in the last 30+ years, the builder and contractors and subcontractors all care about quantity and not quality.
Gone are the days of true craftsmanship and a pride in doing the job right the first time, truly sad.
Mike and his crew show exactly how it should be done and luckily there are few who get to benefit from their help.

Have none of these folks ever owned a front loading washer before? Not a single one completely drains water and because, unlike top loaders, they're made to seal tight, any water inside doesn't evap and becomes stagnant. The rule of thumb is to always leave the door cracked after use. This is basic knowledge.

    • @ParanoidMarvinMk2
      @ParanoidMarvinMk2 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

In general, yes. This show is old enough that I think it may predate the equivalent law in Canada. Second, the point of that sticker is more for permits and liability for shoddy work. If there is an inspection, and that sticker is intact, than the contractor is responsible for the work inside. If the sticker is broken, the contractor has grounds to say it wasn't their work that had a problem. I.e. you still might be able to get the contractor's warranty to stick if the sticker is broken, but they don't have a leg to stand on denying it if the sticker is intact. The sticker is often placed as part of the final inspection.

OK...lets start off some comments here...1st, all front loading washer machines Really need to stay open when not in use, however, the closet doors will prevent this from happening. 2nd, I'm gonna guess that there's a break in the exhaust venting systems OR that that there is a dead animal that's made it's way into the venting.

I bet the issue with the washing machine was an extremely clogged drain pump filter. Had a similar issue with a front loader. Horrendous smell, standing water in the wash drum, and poor drainage out of the drain hose. The drain filter access is usually under the kick plate on the front of the washing machine at the bottom. Take it off, unscrew the filter, and prepare to be disgusted (both sight and smell). Clean the filter or replace if needed. After putting it all back together, you can buy washing machine cleaning tablets. Run a cleaning cycle (or 2) with those in and the nasty smell should be gone

Tip from a painter with over 25 years of experience:
Always roll from top to bottom because the paint points upwards and dust sticks to it more easily.

I don’t really know just how old or just win. This video was filmed where this house was done whichever but when it comes to washing machines, especially uprights or front loads I have a huge front load and the instruction book on mine says leave the door open when not in use, that way, the machine is out and you don’t end up with that musty odor buildup, moldy smell inside that will transfer your clothes when you wash them and the same thing was said also for my dryer. My dryer was the front load it said leave the door open when you’re not in use as well, that way, the machine will air out and all the moisture will air out that way you don’t end up that musty odor smell and mold and so forth inside the machine that’s what the instruction said on mine were bought back in 2017 Kenmore they’re still running strong today no issues but anyway that’s just my take on washing machine and dryers and what my instruction book said on them leave the doors open when not in use do not leave clothes in them towels in them after they’ve been washed because if they sit in there too long wet, they’ll mold and you can never get that stuff out of your washing machine that smell according to my instructions so don’t leave them in there too long that’s what I understand from what I’ve read in my instructions and my instruction manual and keep your lint trap clean in both machines that’s a must.

I leave my top load washer open so it dries between loads. It's good practice for all washers.

Mold resistant caulking is only resistant if you do not use anything organic to smooth the caulking. NEVER USE YOUR FINGER WITH MOUTH LIQUID, That is inviting mold to grow. Use the silicone spreaders supplied in the kit. NEVER LICK YOUR FINGER AND SMOOTH IT OUT. !!!
