  • An old AWE Broad Gauge Steam Locomotive was steamed up especially for us when we visited the Steam Heritage Museum in Rewari (NR).
The sound of the steam being spewed out is in itself a great experience. To top it, a few detonators were placed by the Museum officials to create more excitement and drama.

She is such a beauty, I do not even remember how the MG steam engines used from Vasco to Miraj (SCR line during the time) looked like. I wish to travel in a steam train in near future. Thanks for sharing this awesome video.

you know the last time i saw an operating steam locomotive from India was when i was a kid.on tv..National Geographic's did a special show on the Railways of India.i still have the tape..the trains mainly the steam engines tht ran were amazing.i really liked the "black beauty contests" tht the different locomotive sheds entered and how each engine was uniquely done..i wish we did tht here..broad gauge steam is rare..i mean replica's are made but originals are wayy better.great vid.just amazing!!

the detonators were placed on purpose as they knew we were filming - just to add some excitement.
Every gangman carries detonators and if he discovers damage then he places them at a prespecified distance before that spot (for unidirectional tracks) or on either side (for bi-directional tracks). The distance is, if i remember correctly 1.5kms.

    Thanks folks.
This was shot at the Rewari Steam Heritage Museum. Out of the many locos, that are located there, this is the only broad gauge loco that works - somewhat!
The loco was specifically steamed up for our benefit.

The WPs do work I thought. They are used for heritage runs aren't they ?

WP 7161 and 7015 are still steamable and sent across the country to haul heritage runs. I do not know, what is the actual plan, but Bayer Garrett at Kharagpur and MG Garrett at Tinsukia should be brought to Rewari for upkeep and maintenance. Also, there are no restored WGs and that is sad.

Excellent photography. Indian railway must run steam engines to develop rail tourism. Steam engine trains always fascinate tourists not only local but also forigioners. Thanks.

Excellently maintained by staff. If the steam engine is normal condition then Railway dept may prepare a plan for heritage tourism with all necessary measures. Thanks

Brilliant video! I am a huge train enthusiast. I grew up with steam locos. Love, Love, LOVE THIS 'SEXY' locomotive, chugging away, blasting fireworks, whistling, blowing smoke & oozing love juice all over! :- ) I wish the Indian Railway had some sense of what we are losing forever by retiring & scrapping such great iron beasts. More videos please! Can you do, hi-def videos in the future? Thank you. :)

I do not know what the current state is. During this visit in March 2010, only one WP and one YP was capable of being steamed up and actually moving.
There are other loco shells in that museum, but looking at the state in which they were, I did not think they would be steamed up anytime soon. Sadly!

Bursting crackers for "welcoming" some one is not very uncommon in India. Also notice the driver blowing the whistle after each detonator blast. All seems to be a kind of way of "welcoming" the guest - here a steam engine :).

@Nictrain123 I saw that very engine on some temporary rails at Toddington, believe it or not. Though it had ducktape all over its buffers, I don't know why. :P

I think explosions like that are supposed to be an emergency stop signal. Why they are using them this way, I don't know. Maybe it is some kind of test.

@Nictrain123 Nothing else was covered in ducktape, just the buffers, maybe they were cracked.

Sorry - this was in the Rewari museum that I shot - in 2010. No trains were running on Steam traction by then on BG or MG.
