Just nothing can replace the sight, the sheer beauty of a steam engine in action! I have been one of the those lucky folks who personally had the privilege to travel in these trains runned by steam engines. Yes, the early 90's were the last years before steam engines got finally phased out and were replaced by diesel engines especially for metre gauge tracks. Thirty years is such a long time and things have changed like crazy in all this time... It's like the era of 90's was a different world altogether. Those were simple times. We used to enjoy and value small, small things in life... Which made our life meaningful. Today's kids can never understand that! Nostalgia! I last travelled in a steam driven passenger train from Ludhiana to Jalandhar in 1989 or 1990. Seemed to take ages as she halted at every little station. From Jalandhar just barely managed to catch a ramshackle Punjab Roadways to Pathankot. (I shouldn't complain about the bus being ramshackle, though. It was late because of its sad mechanical state and thus I could catch it). In those days buses in Punjab weren't allowed to run after dark due to security reasons.

Wow What a Fantastic Old Rustic India Used to Be at that Time Absolutely Raw , Now with Rampant Electrification the whole Beauty of Indian Railways and it's Golden Past is Dead .
I was born in '94. Its mind boggling how far we have come (and how much it remains the same). Looks depressing yet beautiful, you can somehow feel things changing after liberalization. My home state was neglected altogether for many years until recent years, when development took place.
I enjoyed a lot....it took me to those days when I was just 10 yrs old and used to travel from Varanasi to Calcutta (now Kolkata) and remember those days Punjab mail (13006) coming to platform no. 5 hauled by a steam loco till Mughalsarai. Last it was 1982 and 1984. I saw steam locos till 1994 in West Bengal and right in Calcutta, but thereafter, abruptly these were withdrawn by Indian Railways and Diesel locos started rolling on tracks.
Yes, I remember Punjab Mail used to come on Platform 5 only of Mughalsarai station. When my train used to arrive at MGS station from Faizabad, I used to be mesmerized seeing the MGS station and its famous yard because that used to be the only station on my journey that had electrification even at that time. I'm talking about the 90s here, so Yes, I have had the opportunity of sitting in those red train coaches hauled by a steam engine loco.... Such simpler times and bygone days 😭
Great stream loco video taken in India just before steam traction was withdrawn. In fact, less than a couple of years after this video, steam became a rarity, if not relic. How completely things changed in barely months after this video. Kids born after 1995 will scarcely believe this, except for the video which plays into the theme of backward India, snake charmers, steam, coal, crowded roads with honking cars etc. Simple lives, innocent times and mesmerizing steam, all like a haze gone, as if modern times were better times but only more pretentious.
It's amazing to see that there were steam traction in North India in 1990s. In my childhood during 1980s Alcos ruled the tracks of Kerala. Now all of them were replaced by WAPs and WAGs.
Wow! I had no idea steam locos were in service in 1990s. CR & WR, at least in Mumbai, had long transitioned to electric locos by then, and the British built WCM 1's hauling Mumbai-Pune trains were themselves considered relics. Thanks for uploading!

This is a real rarity. So beautifully filmed. I am so lucky to have lived those wonderful years. Literally we used to roam in the steam hauled trains, got down wherever we wanted, ate samosas, kachoris and jalebis in the road side stalls hugging the stations and then used to catch another train in the opposite direction. We used to travel frequently in Punjab Mail, North Bihar Express, Benaras Express which were hauled by steam locos, in the Asansol- Burdwan- Andal section with our student pass and sometimes without ticket 😅 We were 4 or 5 of us and we used to take the risks of travelling w/o ticket sometimes. Those were the days and now they are a sweet memory. Thanks for uploading this beautiful video. This is a treasure...!!!!
Thank you, Ian Silvester for your hard work. If only some rich Indian could watch this great clip and give money for editing and making it a high resolution film? Am i dreaming?
Modern! With a society that has folks that don't talk to each other because they remain glued to their phones. I don't think that's modernity. Materialistically, yes, you may have much more than ancestors but what about other things?
Wonderful films here, thanks for sharing! I recall seeing steam trains in India during trips there '90-'95, mostly though for shunting around the yard. Quite a sight then to see them in service! Long gone, and so much else has changed.
Been to Haridwar in 1993. At that time some passenger trains were drawn by steam from Mughal Sarai to Haridwar . Kashi was full of stam locos both broad and metere gage. Today we have Bande Bharat. All electrified. In Bengal from Bardhaman till Sahibgunj many trains were pulled by steam. From Howrah to Bardhaman steam had left in the late 70s. Japanese sumitomo electric used to haul even the Darjeeling mail to Bardhaman. Then steam and later diesel used to take over. In north Bengal many of the MG trains were hauled by TATA . When static they used to make sound like a jet engine. There was a bullet nosed wp loco working as a shunter with steam leaking from all the pipes. It was a sad sight. I must admit the steam locos of Northern railways looked more well maintained than eastern.
Have watched this wonderful video earlier too but could not resist again. My last steam engine hauled train was from Hyd to Bidar in 1994. My father being in Railways, i have always loved trains and would watch them in their splendour (like Ajanta Express) from our quarters when my father was posted in the then Aurangabad rail station! Am a senior citizen now and still love trains very much. The transition from steam to diesel to electric has been experienced by our generation. We are blessed indeed! Best wishes from Hyderabad!
Thanks for the nostalgia trip Ian! Sadly, the steam locomotives were phased out down South in the early to mid-1980's, especially the broad gauge routes in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. One could find a few metre gauge steam locos in Egmore used for shunting purposes in 1991-92. Kerala was probably one of the first states in India to phase out steam completely including the metre gauge line from Kollam (then Quilon) to Sengottai (then Shencottah).
"O dil todke hasti ho mera wafai meri yaad karogi".....i was born in october 1989, my first train ride was in 1992 in rajdhani from howrah to delhi, then from delhi to kalka in shatabdi express, i only remember in the context of railway during that year was that i was shivering inside the train & my mother took me in her arms with a quilt to defy the temperature. We were travelling to himachal for vacation with numerous family members. Anyway, thanks for the memories of 90's & the video documentary is truly a blessing in disguise. Keep up the good work mate.
I am from Kerala.Felt very glad to see your videos especially on steam engines, which is not we can see in moving in service and helped to show my step children Thank you and appreciate your efforts of 1994 to cover in camera and your attitude to show people like us when mobile camera was not available.
Chanced upon your video. These were the sites & sounds of those days when steam locos used to haul people & parcels across India. Almost three decades later, some of these locos landed in museums & few were refurbished , but most were auctioned only to melt in furnaces. Some enterprising business owners converted them into boilers. But they had their own charm & their rhythmic chugging & whistling was music to ears. Alas, they are already an extinct, at least in India.
These trains taught civilization to many countries.Today they simply have become the relics of the past.I travelled by these trains innumerable times. They disappeared in the last decade of the last century only to remain nostalgic.
Thank you very much Ian for my childhood memories I was 12 year old in 1994.Now everything is Change all Modern trains with electricity. The video short near my city.Once again thank u very much

In The Year Of 1994 As A 25 Year Old Indian Youth, Those Were The Golden Period / Years. Very Simple Life. Most Of Us Faced Many Difficulties In Our Day To Day Life But Still Happy, No Hatred At all Against One Another. I Used To keep On And On Travelling From New Delhi To Calcutta By Rajdhani Express In 1St AC & AC 2 Tier ( New Delhi Calcutta / Kolkata Rajdhani ) In Those Years All Routes Nearly 90% Eastern Sector Was Electrified / Electric Line All Thanks To Ghani Khan Choudhury Indian Railways Minister From Malda
I was 11 years old in 1994. It is amazing to see how much hardship our ancestors have faced. The British literally left India in a rubble. If this was the situation just 30 years ago, imagine how it would be in 1947 after independence.
Would be intresting to fine some cine film from that era. THis is why i have posted these films as a historic record, some people say dirty steam locos but that is what it was, thks for watching and please share to others
For information of everyone All regular broad-gauge steam service in India ended in 1995, with the final run made from Jalandhar to Ferozpur on 6 December. The last meter-gauge and narrow-gauge steam locomotives in regular service were retired in 2000.
@@iandorneyphoto you are fond of reporting yesteryear's of Indian Railways. I appreciate your efforts but I felt that your reporting timeing, though you mentioned 1994, give misleading picture about indian railways though, Indian Railways have modernized their rolling stock and traction systems. This prompted me to add few lines about discontinuation of steam system. But Indian Railways runs one steam engine train as heritage train between Haryana and Rajasthan.
@@iandorneyphoto During childhood I travelled in steam engine in himachal as our family friend used to run steam engine between Pathankot and Baijnath paprola.

This is honestly the coolest video ive seen. Its crazy to see streets not filled with bright ads and to see ACTUAL steam trains running on the rails. Thanks so much :)
Thanks for sharing this video...I was 15 years old then. I read the comments and looks like some people wants to go back in time, but trust me friends.. these were pretty difficult and hard days. My father was in Army and therefore I travelled all of Indian. I remember how unorganized and shitty these old times were. Roads were broken, not much of a transport was available, getting it touch with someone far was matter for months. I remember when we were travelling to Panchmarhi, we were on train till Itarsi.... Black thick smoke from these locomotives turned everyone's face black. I don't want to get back in those days... but yeah, this does reminds me of some good memories too.
Honestly shocking that a vast network which relied on steam just 2 decades ago is now %90+ electric and diesel used only in remote areas and steam for tourism purposes
Watching this video took me back to my school days, when, I would take a short cut passing through the Central Railway steam engine workshop at Mazagon adjacent to Hancock Bridge, as I lived bang opposite the railway lines and usec to spend a lot of time admiring those workmen overhauling the steam engines, at time in the 70's, security was lax and people would tresspass through the main gate and either go through the then semi forest type path to cross over to a Tadwadi BIT Blocks, where my Parochial School St. Anne's & St. Mary's was located. And, I loved walking on those tracks in the Marshalling Yard on my way and back from School. I recollect travelling by train hauled by Steam Engines to Delhi ( 1976 ) and to Madras from Bombay by Jayanthi Janatha Express ( 1979 ) in those marooned colored coaches in 2nd sleeper ordinary type bunk ( no cushion then ) Thanks, your clip took me back in time.
I grew up near Kishan ganj station in New Delhi, and i remember it used to have a steam engine shed. every now and then, rail shed workers used to shut main street to let steam engine pass through from shed to station. It was early 90s. Now that place is full of luxury condominiums.

Thanks for your Tv channel as well as Vedio maker .. golden memories we love vintage classics steam trains 🚂 🚂
It's my pleasure
Have watched this wonderful video earlier too but could not resist again. My last steam engine hauled train was from Hyd to Bidar in 1994. My father being in Railways, i have always loved trains and would watch them in their splendour (like Ajanta Express) from our quarters when my father was posted in the then Aurangabad rail station! Am a senior citizen now and still love trains very much. The transition from steam to diesel to electric has been experienced by our generation. We are blessed indeed! Best wishes from Hyderabad!
Thanks for watching
Very nice video. Got emotional watching the Steams ❤😊
glad u liked it
Thanks for the nostalgia trip Ian!
I never went to the south for steam. I am pleased you enjoyed the video and please share it with others
Thanks
"O dil todke hasti ho mera wafai meri yaad karogi".....i was born in october 1989, my first train ride was in 1992 in rajdhani from howrah to delhi, then from delhi to kalka in shatabdi express, i only remember in the context of railway during that year was that i was shivering inside the train & my mother took me in her arms with a quilt to defy the temperature. We were travelling to himachal for vacation with numerous family members. Anyway, thanks for the memories of 90's & the video documentary is truly a blessing in disguise. Keep up the good work mate.
Thanks for comments glad you enjoyed it
I am from Kerala.Felt

Thank you and appreciate your efforts of 1994 to cover in camera and your attitude to show people like us when mobile camera was not available.

Our pleasure!
Beautiful 😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you! Cheers!
Alas, they are already an extinct, at least in India.
as in rest of the world
Awesome video bro plz post more videos of Amritsar punjab area railway station from 1994 ❤❤😢
thanks
These trains taught civilization to many countries.Today they simply have become the relics of the past.I travelled by these trains innumerable times. They disappeared in the last decade of the last century only to remain nostalgic.

In The Year Of 1994
As A 25 Year Old Indian Youth, Those Were The Golden Period / Years.
Very Simple Life.
Most Of Us Faced Many Difficulties In Our Day To Day Life But Still Happy, No Hatred At all Against One Another.
I Used To keep On And On Travelling From New Delhi To Calcutta By Rajdhani Express In 1St AC & AC 2 Tier ( New Delhi Calcutta / Kolkata Rajdhani )
In Those Years All Routes Nearly 90% Eastern Sector Was Electrified / Electric Line
All Thanks To Ghani Khan Choudhury Indian Railways Minister From Malda
glad you liked it
I was 11 years old in 1994.
🙏💯 Excellent ❤ I enjoyed this clip from my ♥ heart . Thank you so much dear.
Thank you too
For information of everyone
All regular broad-gauge steam service in India ended in 1995, with the final run made from Jalandhar to Ferozpur on 6 December. The last meter-gauge and narrow-gauge steam locomotives in regular service were retired in 2000.
thanks glad u liked it
@@iandorneyphoto you are fond of reporting yesteryear's of Indian Railways.
Thank you so much for this video…. I was quite overwhelmed as i am a resident of saharanpur district ❤️
My pleasure 😊

Do u have any videos of Indian sugar mill railways there were many sugar mill in India where they have private steam loco system to transport sugarcane from nearby feilds to the mills.

This is honestly the coolest video ive seen. Its crazy to see streets not filled with bright ads and to see ACTUAL steam trains running on the rails. Thanks so much :)
Wow, thanks!

I was in Kolkota in 1994....and boy ...there it was all electrified with high speed trains...
hope you enjoyed it
Thanks for sharing this video...I was 15 years old then. I don't want to get back in those days... but yeah, this does reminds me of some good memories too.
thks 4 watching it
They do have smoke problem that's why they are not used in majority
Thank You Mr. Ian. My mind flown back to my childhood era.
glad you liked it
I thought much of the Pullers were already replaced with Diesel Engines.......Amazed at Steam Pullers still plying in this part. Thanks for sharing.
almost the end
Honestly shocking that a vast network which relied on steam just 2 decades ago is now %90+ electric and diesel used only in remote areas and steam for tourism purposes
absolutely gorgeous footage
Many thanks!
Wow I like very much bathinda junction ki koi hai 1994 ja beond 1994 plz share karo m vi bahut jaurney ki steam loco ki I m 65 yr old plz share

@@iandorneyphoto thanks ji I m waiting
I recollect travelling by train hauled by Steam Engines to Delhi ( 1976 ) and to Madras from Bombay by Jayanthi Janatha Express ( 1979 ) in those marooned colored coaches in 2nd sleeper ordinary type bunk ( no cushion then ) Thanks, your clip took me back in time.
glad it brought back good memories
How the time drastically changes this video is the proof. Love the video so much
Our golden days ❤😢
Glad you enjoyed it
I grew up near Kishan ganj station in New Delhi, and i remember it used to have a steam engine shed. every now and then, rail shed workers used to shut main street to let steam engine pass through from shed to station. It was early 90s. Now that place is full of luxury condominiums.
hope you enjoyed it
In 30 years we went from Steam to Vande Bharat.
Now thats progress
hope you liked the video
