  • Today we are using the New Holland Flail chopper to harvest some feed! In this case we are harvesting an alfalfa grass mix down in our meadow! The tractors we are using are the 7510 John Deere, the Oliver 1650,and the 686 International! Try to guess which one we ran out of fuel….

Milking cows put me through UW Madison nearly 50 years ago. Took my city girlfriend out to the farm to show her what it's like. Got all the chores done, green chopping, etrc. She said are we done now??? Uh, well, no, now we gotta milk the cows, 2 more hours. Still got her, 51 glorius years later. Love your vids.

I watch your videos with my 2 year old grandson. He is crazy about cows and tractors. I grew up on a dairy and have done everything your showing. Its a lot of work. I still have that farm in NY which is not operational and I have a small hay farm in VA. There is no dairy farms left here, all beef. Farming is an equipment intensive and labor intensive carrier. What people do not see is those 14 hour days which are 7 days a weeks and no time off which is hard on a family. Keep it up if you can get help. Thanks for sharing.

What an awesome view of nature in that meadow. It was pretty flat on our farm in IL, so we plowed everything up to the fences and buildings. My cousin had a dairy and he ran his flail chopper with an old Minnie U which was really barking. My favorite will always be chopping corn silage; love that aroma of freshly cut corn and sorghum. Thanks again for a wonderful video highlighting your beautiful farm.

Great video! Most don't realize how different it is to farm that hill ground. I grew up on flat land in IL. I worked for a dairy farmer in WI for a short time when I was a kid. Bailing hay with a throw bailer on a side hill was interesting.

Spent many a days green chopping for our cows, until we had enough storage to be to put up haylage. Cows loved the green chop, but it was only good for a day or two. Once it started to heat, it became a green manure.

  • @joesteck6631
    @joesteck6631 ปีที่แล้ว +3

There were a lot of things we hated about green chopping. First of all of course the cows milked like crazy on it but the butterfat test went way down. It threw some cows off and they’d get real loose. What a mess. And the feed got hot quickly so you were pitching it out if they didn’t finish it.

A buddy of mine has a old John Deere 55 green chopper that lives on a farmall H. He does not have a lot of his own pasture. But his neighbors let him chop little fields all down his road. He calls it door dash pasture delivery lol

Green chopping really helped us last year with how dry it was in southern wi, planted some damp bottom land into sorghum sudan and cow peas and chopped every evening for all of our cows, pastures were brown and crispy and that stuff thrived

Enjoyed this one. It had it all, great scenery, cows, dog, tractors, equipment and You, Darby and Mason. Good to see you all. Take care.
My husband didn't enjoy filling his car up and would sometimes think he had enough gas when he didn't. Don't know how many times he ended up walking to a gas station, buying another small gas can and filling it up. Needless to say, he ended up carrying an empty gas can with him as he also does not like to spend any more money than he has too. I have learned not to trust his judgement as to how far we could go and worry myself into filling it up at the start. What fun. Thanks and take care.

The dairy farmer next door to us was like your husband. He never put more than a couple bucks worth of fuel in the truck so every time he needed to go anywhere it was empty. I loved the guy but it seemed like he liked to suffer.

That all looks like a nice setup there. That would make a really good game shoot there with Duck on the ponds and driven pheasant off of the hills over the dips. Some really high birds. I did notice the high seat there. That land is a bit similar to places here in the UK. Love from England UK.

I’ve used a flail chopper a few times. Great tool for certain situations. Pretty versatile too. You can chop corn stalks, green feed, cut up weeds and even clean up the garden. I haven’t had one in years. Would buy one again in a second, but they are very hard to find around my place.
Great video as usual. God Bless

The N.H. 38 can be an emergency fill in for a discbine, by opening the rear cover over the auger. Hay will blow out the back into a semi-windrow.

    • @georgedoorley5628

yes it can but the hay will spoil quickly if it gets rained on as the double chop harvester is hard on the grass .........so we found .....!

What a good video, and oh man give the 16 some love. She could have done that. We used to have a flail chopper like that back in the day. One year while we chopped corn we would green chop a load of alfalfa and put it in the upright silo along with the corn sileage. Something like 3-4 loads of corn to 1 of alfalfa. We only did that once, not sure why.

Did green chopping on my Dad's farm with an earlier version of the Gehl flail chopper in the 1960s. Dodge County, WI, so much flatter. We could pull the chopper and wagon with a JD 50. Used either a Gehl self-unloading wagon or a farm-built feeder wagon. This wagon had high sides and a back wall, so it was much easier to hit the spot and fill it. I think the back and side walls were 8 feet tall. This enclosure was about 4 feet wide. We had farm-built bunks to unload the Gehl wagons into. We were chopping from one of our regular hay fields which were mostly alfalfa. Thanks for the video. Enjoyed seeing you guys and bringing back memories from my youth.

I love watching you guys!! Small farming unfortunately has become a lost art. I helped my Grandfather on his farm in Winnebago County near Oshkosh, WI, The reason I enjoy your videos, is it brings back great memories. I have done every job y'all are doing, and yes, I have done green chopping. Every morning after milking (& clean up) we did green chop on a flat hay wagon (try keeping the hay on that LOL), & then park the wagon in the barn yard. Keep up the videos!!

The calf looked good! Nice work getting that tractor primed without having to crack the injector lines! I've never been that lucky 😂. I'd love to have a flail chopper around, I think for a few weeks in the Spring (before the herd goes out to pasture) & and a few weeks in the Fall it would be a great way to save on my silage and bale supply!

if u have a bailer u can bale up a bale and bring it in to them .........i have done it in the past ....... did not tie the bales just dump them on the feeding passage and roll them out with the loader ........so long as they are eaten that day the grass will not heat .......

Slowing down would help with the clumping. We used a much larger wagon that was higher also. Similar flail chopper (it was an NH, not sure of the model.) We used a 55 hp diesel to do all of our flail chopping (forage and corn stalks), and we definitely didn’t go that fast.
