    You did a good job explaining and demonstrating the method and reasons for using the router (much faster and cleaner). I use Rotozip Guidepoint bits with a little round smooth tip so as to not cut into the box. Also, to cut on the outside of a box, you start near the center, cut to the edge, get on the outside lip and follow the rim counter-clockwise. This keeps the bit spinning against the rim, with less chance to wander away from rim.

      +Swiss Banjo Man thanks for the additional tips, RotoZips are a pretty great tool. Makes the project go faster ;)

      I'm wondering if a regular drill, with a drywall bit would cutout drywall like a router. LoL.

    • @swissbanjoman
      @swissbanjoman 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it would work but a drill only spins at a fraction of the speed of a router/ cutout tool. Drill= 1200 rpm, Router = 30,000 rpm.

    Well done Steve. A great presentation for this non-pro. Forget about the other know-it-all show-offs and the perpetual negative guys who find it much easier to be critical than do a video themselves.

    Grunting for an electrician, had I cut holes in that fashion without having the box basically flush with the drywall [paint surface], I would be packing my tools and looking for another employer.

    Question.... So Useful video thanks by the way... But i still messed up... I missed my cut by 1/8 or so around shower drop ear, so when i drilled drywall it cracked a little in a circle, i cut and pushed it up, but seems like the only thing holding the crumbled drywall is the paper... It feels a tiny bit weak around that hole... Do i scrap it and redo it or what would you do? Damn mold resistant drywall is 20 bucks each, hurts to just throw away unless I have to... What would you do? 😭😭😭

    Use a hole saw, use it with a dust collector silicone cup . I would never use that thing to cut downlights out, far too much dust. And outlets I use a Bosch cordless multi tool, way more useful than the drywall cutter.

    I bought a DeWalt Cut-Out Tool and tried to cut out a round ceiling box and an outlet box on the wall. I couldn't control that thing! It went all over and messed up my drywall, so now I have to try to fix it So I'm going to stick with the drywall knife, because it doesn't take off on me and destroy the drywall.

    That tool you're referring to as a drywall knife is a keyhole saw, and is best used to cut out Electrical boxes before the sheet is hung. Also you want to go counterclockwise with the router when cutting out Electrical boxes,

    Also, it looked like the electrical box was recessed too far behind the sheet rock. Needs to be 1/4" recess maximum in noncombustible walls/ceilings such as sheet rock. Why you must make your cut outside the box and have the box mounted to protrude to the outer surface of the sheet rock, or within 1/4"/

      the home depot carries 3 sizes of guided zip bits like this fellow ^^^was explaining. i prefer the medium guided bit for my boxes,a/c vents,outlets. I also use the large guided bit for my doorways & windows

      RetroWeld thanks, yah the RotoZip is awesome at cutting drywall. It's so much faster than a normal drywall saw. Sure, it's a bit expensive but you can always sell it on Craigslist when you're done :D

      +Jeff Patterson you cut your boxes backwards...try counter-clock when cutting around something and clockwise when cutting inside something...the same applies to cutting over lapping joint. i havent used my key-hole saw in at least 12 years.

    Dry wall people regulary cut my wires and cost me many labor hours. They use routers and rotozip tools. We push our wires way back but they still cut some everytime. Sucks that they don't care about the other guy and cost me thousands of dollars every year. I don't screw up other people's jobs but it is OK for the dry wall people to screw up mine? It's OK because they are in a hurry and want to make money but I have to put these huge loops on my wires so I can pull down more and make up joints later. That sucks.

    • @amberjackson5310
      @amberjackson5310 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      he did , he should be going counter clockwise and you should never put a screw that close to the cutout he just broke the board and created more work for the finisher

  • @davidbarry3469
    @davidbarry3469 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Code now requires the boxes to extend through the drywall you need to cut the box holes before you attach drywall. Additionally you should be using a rotozip with a bearing and only running inside the box. It you run outside box you can damage any sound or fire protection. The drywall will need to removed and problem fixed before inspection will pass costing drywall installer money and time.

    • @jacobelbert250
      @jacobelbert250 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Code allows a box to be recessed up to 1/4 inch from surface of drywall

    • @jacobelbert250
      @jacobelbert250 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can also buy a box extender to make it flush with surface if it is buried deeper the 1/4 inch. That way you don't have to remove the drywall and move box
