  • I was given a wood gas stove by a good friend a few years ago. I'd heard a lot about how efficient and clean burning they were but never really thought to put it head to head with my other favourite wood stove, The Folding Firebox.
I figured out a way to run a fairly accurate test and this video will show the results.
I hope you find it interesting.

Hi Sandy I also have a wood gasifier stove that I made myself which is fantastic is it's virtually smokeless once it warms up
if the fuel is very well seasoned also around 18 months ago I purchased a slot together wood stove by Tomsho which is very light made of titanium and packs down small enough to put in your pocket I was surprised how well it performed love using them both as I am a terrible skinflint and I like to use natural fuel for free whenever I can
I still love my petrol, gas and spirit stoves though thank you for an interesting video I hope that Mandy is continuing to recover well and it's all going as planned take care you both and best wishes from Somerset

G'day mate.Just been playing with my new ebay woodgas stove in the backyard after reading the comments here.I found it worked really well and the gasification was a joy to behold. What is even better is that by inverting the burner basket it is the perfect height to sit a "trangia" alcohol stove on .I have a tiny Kovea burner that screws on a canister so now have plenty of toys for my next bush trip. Was intriqued by the wood gas stove as it burns with little smoke once it gets going .I stumbled across your channel when looking at the West Highland way and subscribed right away. From there I found out Jacklore channel and that you play guitar and dabbled in slingshots and homebrewing. Thanks for being a bloke of many talents.

      Hi Noel,
More testing is required as the Gasifier stovies reckon I need to light it with an upside down fire:)

Like the others say Sandy stack wood vertically and light from top.we have cooked soup and made a brew from one filling. I'm sure you can turn the ash pan upside down to sit your trangia on. I love these two stoves too, it depends what mood I'm in as to which I use. Cool vid, back to the old Sandy I started watching years ago

  • @peterichardson3267

If you stack the wood right in the gasifier stove and light it from the top it will be much more efficient. I've had an hours burn time out of one

Glad to see the gasifier stove still serving you hot brews Sandy, it's a favourite of mine and it packs well. The main thing I do not like about the firebox stoves are weight and price, far too heavy for what it is and way overpriced, but I do like them, although I've not used one. Hope Mandy is doing well in her recovery. Stay safe mate and atvb.

Nice jaunt in the countryside once again 👍. Enjoyed the stove comparison. Your wood gasifier is the same as mine. I manage to fit a meths burner inside mine ( home made using fizzy drink cans courtesy of YT) and it works fine when I do my day trips out; sadly I haven't been out on one since early march due to our strict lockdown over here but things are relaxing off a bit now so I'm hoping to get out for a trip once fasting is over. Stay safe. ATVB from sunny Malaysia. 😎😷

Now that looked like a proper cup of tea! You make Americans proud around the world drinking with a cup that size (hehe) - wife always beats me up about that. To me, nettles are like Spinach when cooked that way - amazing that the forest is the best kept secret (or should I say Grocery Store)! I own both stoves as you do and still use them both.

      @WiltshireMan  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Interesting experiment. The guess the gasifier stove is low enough to not let the flame burn all the way to its end before it hits the pot. If it had been taller, it would have been heating faster and also not given off so much soot, but if it had been taller it would also have to be wider so that it wouldn't be too tippy. Making it less packable. So I guess the folding stove wins out by being able to pack a big stove into a small space.
For my own use, fire safety comes first as I usually camp out on pine covered hills, and they can get quite flammable during the summer season. And for that, I find the medium sized, double bottomed Solo Stove to be best. I may get a Firebox for the fall/winter season though.

It looks like you might have several edible greens to throw in with your nettle. Doc and violet for sure from what I could see on the video. Likely some Lambs Quarter or Goosefoot in there too. Maybe a little Dandelion. all those leaves are thrown in a pot make for a nice boil that you can drink the broth and eat the greens. A bouillon cube or a little piece of salted pork, some spices you like go well also. Spring and summer are the best woods foraging and eating and lunch in the woods will have almost no dollar cost but enormous human benefit. Thanks for the video Sandy, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I don't think I've ever seen the Gen1 Firebox. The Gen2 is all you can find now, and has a couple great improvements. The top feeding port is now close able, and there are two perpendicular, overlapping feeding ports that you can use long sticks in. This gives overlapping ports so that you can control the flame and even simmer by the size and quantity of sticks.
It's expensive, and its heavy, but that weight means you'll be able to hand it down to you kids. Really I think it's more of a two person stove, which is why they came out with a mini. Hell, Ive used it as a mini fireplace.
And it can be used as a stand/ wind screen for most alcohol stoves, I got a grill for meats with mine......can you tell I love it?😊
I used to have a gasifier, but hated it with a passion, and switched to the Firebox. Love the dam thing. Never go camping without it. I can boil water in just a few minutes, from taking it out of the bag up to boil, and Ive cooked proper dinners with lower heat on a frying pan.
When I get some cash I'll buy the mini, but for now I'm not hiking that far anyway.

Hi Sandy, I made my way to the woods yesterday and after watching this video (and reading the comments). Using the Wood Gasifier Stove, I cut some thumb size, pencil size and pencil led size hard wood. I stood it up on end (as suggested in the comments). I also stuck 2 cotton balls (tore-up a bit) and put them between the wood (and birch bark) to make it easier to light. I added a spark which immediately caught fire. I used only the led size to start the fire on top of the wood. I used Hard Wood for this test and was able to boil 2 cans of 500 ml (tea and soup) with this one fire and after they were done - there were still hot coals for some time - absolutely impressive. You should try that test again standing the wood up on its end. I bet even the FireBox would perform fantastically better than you are use to - use hard wood as it burns slower/hotter and best for the small stoves.

Thanks for another interesting video. You are right about the gasifier burning well on cat litter. I fill mine to the brim with cat litter and put a small piece of firelighter on top, it then burns for approx 45 minutes. It works better by burning from the top downwards. But each to their own and everyone finds their own way. Looking forward to seeing the trail cam result.

Nice video Sandy as your videos always are. It’s a pleasure to tramp the wilderness with you. Here is my take on backpacking stoves. They all seem to work just fine. As long as you can get a fire and cook your food and boil your water, the stove has accomplished it’s purpose and you are a happy camper. I personally use the Firebox system because it packs very nicely and it is very versatile. The Firebox can be used to burn wood, charcoal, pellets, or any combustible material. Furthermore, I can burn alcohol Trangia, Sterno in cans, or set up for the Trangia gas canister burner. It can be used in so many different burning modalities. So, once I settled on the Firebox stove “system” I don’t spend any time or money fussing with other stoves. It works great and I’ m satisfied. As far as the weight is concerned, I think any adult male should be able to hoist it up to backpack level. If I was concerned about weight, I’d loose about 50 pounds. Lol. Thanks for you’re excellent videos. March on.

Just like the good old days Sandy, seeing you sitting against a tree brewing up. Your test proves the gasification stove to be my preferred light choice, one can store wax pads, espresso coffee, and coffee mate powder thus using some of the space on transit. Can lay a spirit trangia burner on ground by removing the ash tray and bingo, another option begins. So nice of you to share. All the very best to you. Harry

I love to see the stove videos Sandy, especially when I am in the process of searching for a reliable and practical wood burning stove like I am now. I have one of the StoveTec brands of wood burning rocket stoves, but, it is much too big and heavy to pack around out in the woods. That Firebox Stove that you show there looks very promising to me. I might just have to give something like that a try. Thanks for taking them out in the woods and showing them to us and giving us an idea on how they work. From my perspective. Depends on the camp site. Wild camping no smoke or noise from a gas stove. Trangia would be my preference. Beach summertime with a short distance would be a gas stove. I find the stove is different for each type of camp and how efficient they are is less important. Great video and comparison. Personally I dont like either of them...Cheers from old George

    Nice vid
The Firebox Gen 2 wins down to versatility and engineering.
You can enclose your stainless steel Nalgene bottle with a circular top so much more heat is focussed to heat water.
    Not possible with the gasifier
You can make a Swedish firetorch with wood or charcoal briquettes with the firebox
    Not so with the gasifier
Also a Trangia can be used with firebox
    Not with gasifier
Also a gas hob ring with firebox
    Not with gasifier
Also wood pellets - probably with both
But can the gasifier turn the billy can into an oven?
    No but the firebox can
If you haven’t guessed by now I own a firebox G2 and also a much smaller and lighter nano. Both in steel and both will last forever.

The firebox appears to have more oxygen inlet than the wood gas. Having said that, the wood gas is a delight to look at when she gets going. I have yet to find a camp stove (non wood burner) that I can control on a low heat, they nearly always go from turbo to zero without a middle ground control for simmering. Enjoyed that Sandy. cheers.

I see others have commented about the way to light the wood gasification stove, other observation was that you delayed putting the billy can on the gasifier. Where as you put it straight onto the FireBox.
I have a wood gasifier stove, from WildStoves. £45 mine was. Sits inside a saucepan and lid.
I covert the FireBox stove. 👍🏻

There's a bigger version of the wood gas stove out which, personally, I find better as it can take larger wood, if I was just going to boil water I would take that. Anything else I use my bushbox stove for as the heat is more controllable. It's personal preference really at the end of the day. ATB Adam.

I have a Solo Stove and also a Ghillie Kettle. The Ghillie Kettle wins hands down for boiling water while the Solo Stove is good for cooking / frying food on :) 😉

Many years ago I made an alcohol stove from a Budweiser Beer Can to use until I could get a better one and all these years later I am still using it. LOL Guess I will go with the folding firebox.

Hi sandy a bit of de-ja-vu there as I've been having nettle tea in the billy pot when I go out for my bike ride , and like you say it needs to stew for a while & I've been throwing the nettles away , next time I'll try them , on another note i have the same 2 stoves you used , through your recommendation 👌👍ps the cat litter works great 👍 stay safe

Isn't amazing how when you put things down they go walkies, i find a screwdriver i have been using 1min ago does the same.
Nettle leaves have, i believe the same iron & vitamin "C content as Spinach, both are good for you anyway.

The issue with nettles are the cistoliths that can form and lodge in the kidneys.

Great video again Sandy. I hope all is well with you and the missus? I know it's been a tough time for you both. I've got the Firebox stove and love it. It's a great bit of kit. So versatile and you can use so many different fuel source with it.

Still on lockdown here in Wales but I have managed to get out to the butchers at the local farm shop. Never tried nettle tea Sandy. I noticed you were picking the young leaves from the top of the plant (just like tea pickers) I assume that's the way to do it.

I thought I would let you know which stove I use. I bought an hexamine stove kit from BM bargains 4 years ago (stove, 2 billie cans and cutlery set all in a bag) for £8. I use 2 firelighter blocks from Asda , that enables me to warm up a tin of soup and boil water for coffee. More than adequate for light camping use or day walks. I was laughed at by a friend who is very much materialistic. He no longer bothers with his jetboil while I still use my set up every week.

giving my suggestion before finishing the video...........I would assume that the solid gasifier stove works best......because its fairly closed off but has quite enough space underneath for oxygen to fuel the flames.....
at least that what I figured with my wood stove setup ....... its basically a cover that fits around my kidney shaped canteen ( british army surplus canteen )....and it even has some hooks inside that can lift up to hold the trangia stove up high and closer to the pot )
mine is like the gasifier a bit on the bulky side but its not heavy at all.......although its solid aluminum which might not last much longer....
.....but I keep watching what your take will be......

    • @WiltshireMan
      @WiltshireMan  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Max, they were pretty much neck and neck. Same amount of fuel, but may try packing the gasifier then lighting it as an upside down style fire. Some comments are suggesting it is better that way

i take nettle tea green when i can and will pick enough young tips whenever i'm out on a walk passing a patch, to keep me going a couple of days, as it will keep fresh for 2-3 days in a bag in a cool place. i also go out and harvest young nettle tips all through summer and dry them in the oven and store them in cotton pillow cases so i have a supply all year around, i like at least one cup of nettle tea per day. nettle tea is good for chronic kidney disease etc but its important not to use the the tips when they have gone to flower or seed as i have been led to believe they can cause kidney stones? the root of the nettle can also be used to make tea which is reputed to be good for prostate among other things. its an underestimated herb is the nettle. nettle tea does lower blood pressure , so if you have low pressure it may be best to avoid ? i can tell you from 1st hand experience that too much nettle tea is a very good natural laxative ;o) no more than 4 good strong cups a day.

@@WiltshireMan it has a different taste again when its dried sandy, both are nice. here is a couple of links to nettle tea but there's many many more on the internet . its very important that you boil the nettles like you would water from a stream to sterilise it as you don't know what on it? that said I've been drinking wild harvested nettle tea for nearly two years and its never done me any harm. ;o)
