    The SilverFire® Scout is a lightweight wood fired gasifier stove, that operates on just on twigs or flammable biomass. It is an ultra compact gasifier design intended for minimalist backpacking or bug out application. It is designed to be used with small solo sized pots down to 2.5" in diameter or other larger backpack trekking cookware. The recommended weight for the Scout is approximately 3 lb / 1.5 Kg small pots. This translates to small cookware designed to heat a quart or liter of water. This stove is not designed for large family cookware, such as our Dragon Pot. Consider one of our larger portable stove models for family sized meals. Please see stove accessories for the MSR Alpine Stowaway pot or fire starter combo kit option offered for sale on our website. The backpack shown in photo is for combo stove kit size reference and is not included in the sale. The Scout Stove includes a black nylon bag with drawstring

    In case anyone is interested, this will hold a 10" cast iron pan with no problem as long as your base can support it. Also wood pellets are a good backup if your local biomass is wet. I keep some in a zip lock bag just in case. Pine tends to turn your pots black more so than hardwoods and if you do not have tack cloth, cotton balls and petroleum jelly works good too.

    Great to see the new 304 with five prong featured John. Great demo too! The thing I like about the Scout is that it's going perform the best of any personal sized wood stove made today. The thing I don't like at times and this was the perfect example, is the fuel preparation time, flame maintenance and boil times in certain conditions. When it's damp, these can be a headache even for a seasoned outdoorer. The semi-closed system makes it more difficult to start and maintain a good fire than a boyscout fire on open ground in open air. When it's dry, everything is easier and that's where this stove really shines.

    • @Wingman115
      @Wingman115  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Patriot36 Thanks for your observation on the effects of conditions.

      There's a company that makes a much larger version of a gasifier stove that accepts logs and weighs 20 lbs, however the cost is nearly 300 hundred dollars.
      I sometimes camp in the north west, where it rains quite a bit, rain fall depending on which area , averages from ~20 to over 150 inches per year. Gasifier stoves work well with dry biomass, when wet you need a large enough fire to dry out the wood and biomass.

    Thank you for your this review. I've been on the fence about buying one of these and this is the 2nd review You've Done on a product that has encouraged me to pull the trigger and go ahead and get it the first was the Tops Knives Cochise review you did. I am happy to say I absolutely enjoy both of these items! Keep up the outstanding work. I'm going to experiment with some boiled linseed oil now to see what kind of accelerant for use on Cotton balls or other Tinder for fire starting, an interesting concept.

    Looks like a nice option if you want a gasification stove since a lot of them tend to take up a lot of space in your pack, only annoying thing is if you wanted to pair it with a larger pot system and it wouldn't be able to support the weight.

    You dont need tac cloth magnesium and fat wood to start a fire ,simply scrape some birch bark with your knife so you have a nice pile of shavings hit it with a Ferro spark soon as its alight add some more birch bark for a prolonged burn time to get you kindling alight works every time.

    Jeezeeeee........You used a Tack Cloth ( a small piece would do it ) , Magnesium shavings ,( enough for a handful of fires ) then some Fat Wood ( it starts fires all be itself ) You really wanted the fire to start on the 1st try. Any one of them and a small amount would start the fire.
    I start my fires with a piece of Fat wood about the same size as a small wood match or Dryer Lint or a Cotton ball with some Vaseline or Alcohol on it. Camping is not camping without a fire and with a wood burning stove you can have a fire at lease twice a day , Breakfast and Supper.

    I have to be very honest. I bought this stove. To say that it is greedy for sticks is something of an understatement. It is a nightmare. Boiling water requires taking the water off several times to put in more sticks. It is too tiny to even consider cooking anything on, and it took me well over 20 minutes to boil a cup of water. I will be using my Firebox stove in future, so that I can put proper wood instead of endless sticks, I can cook on it instead of just water, and, whereas the Scout drops embers everywhere requiring an additional aluminum foil underneath to prevent fires, the firebox is bigger, safer and a cooking stove, instead of water, which I could boil far quicker using either my gas stove or my firebox. I cannot recommend the Silverfire Scout to anybody. Too small to put long burning wood, too small to cook, desperately needy for sticks, and takes forever to boil water, which is all that it is good for.

    Adding the magnesium was a total waste of time and material: You just don't need it along with all the other stuff! Magnesium needs a hot spark to burn, you use it on its own, then add tinder to it. Why buy tack cloth? just use birch bark or feather sticks
