- Sabaton's music video for BISMARCK - I am blown away. What an incredible video! I've tried my best to deconstruct the video but there was so much going on so I'm sure I missed things, especially since this was just my first watch. Absolutely stunning VFX here and combining it with the practical effects was very convincing, and Sabaton rocking out on the deck of a fishing boat is just awesome. I know the Sabaton fans really get into the history and lore of the videos so tell me what this is about in the comments, I have no clue about the Battle of the Atlantic, and I'm also really curious what the coordinates on that coin are!

Fun fact: in real life the captain of the boat is the son of a survivor from the Bismarck, hence him holding the medallion at the end! So in a way it's his father's story...

The carving is done by the captain of the Bismarck and what he does is he apparently carves the coordinates of Bismarck's location in the lid of a compass. If you watch the video with some eye for detail, you will see that the compass is used by the captain of the fishing boat to find the location where the Bismarck sank. He is supposedly a son or grandson of the sailor who was rescued from the Bismarck. Most reactors miss the story with the compass completely, even though it is shown quite prominent in the video. If you watch the video again I'm sure you will see it.
Pocket watch, actually, not a compass. Very, very different looks to the two.
@@brennanhearn6342it's a pocket compass, there is a closeup at 3:36, it's clearly a compass. Single red/white indicator so no hands and also no time numbers, only directions.
Retired U.S. Navy Submarine Quartermaster here. Good eye to you. I haven't encountered too many people in recent years that would recognize that "medallion" as she put as a compass. I know of even fewer people that would recognize the numbers as Lat/Long coordinates. The thing about the Sabaton video I really appreciate is that Sabaton refers to Bismarck as a he as the Kriegsmarine sailors did.

What I mean is to go all in with Sabaton even if it will take time as you react to other music too! But it makes absolutely nothing that it will take time if you decide to do it! And the songs you have already reacted to, you can then skip if you want to! I am sure you would have loved it and not regretted it!

For the song "Christmas Truce" there is an extended "making of" documentary explaining the quality of the film as this was during the covid lockdown so most film & TV professionals were unemployed and were grateful for the work provided by Sabaton
Fun fact: Since you brought up the Titanic, Robert Ballard, the man who discovered the wreck of the Titanic in 1985, also discovered the wreck of the Bismarck 1989.

A lot of the CGI work and ship CGI was done by a video game company called Warships...ie the makers of the PC game World of Warships. They teamed up with Sabaton to make this video.
They also teamed up to make the video for the Sabaton song "Primo Victoria" as a promotion for their game World of Tanks as well as the video for the Sabaton song "Steel Commanders" also for World of Tanks. They also teamed up with world reknowned cello player Tina Guo for the "Steel Commanders" video as well. There was also a tank you could get in the game specially made for it and was crewed by the Sabaton band members.
The name of the company is Wargaming. You thought faster than you wrote ;-)

Wargaming also did the video for Primo Victoria. They also have or had at least one Sabaton themed tank in World of Tanks as well.
The shipcat Oscar also survived the sinking of the Bismarck. He became part of the crew of the HMS Cossack and was named Sam. But his story didn't end on that destroyer. He survived the sinking of the Cossack too and was than livig on the carrier HMS Ark Royal, wich also sank. He survived, again, and stayed after that on Gibraltar, because sailors are known to be superstitious. The cat is today known as Unsinkable Sam and lived after the war in a retiermenthome for sailors in Belfast
Speaking of HMS Ark Royal, it is the same carrier we see scrarmbling the Swordfish planes against Bismark at 7:17

In colloquial English, ships are often referred to as 'boats', even by sailors; it may be a combination of affection for the ship (particularly if one serves on it) with the English penchent for understatement.
The coordinates are the location of the ship, where it sank. The medallion was given to the young sailor, who survived the sinking and later went on to have a child, a person who is still alive today. This person is the elderly sailor the sabaton crew talks to in the beginning. You can see the guy holding the medallion when the music starts.
I think something like 114 people out of two thousand survived the sinking.
It took like third of the British Atlantic fleet to sink it, but it was such a high value target Churchill wanted to put everything on it.

Well, that hulking mass of steel, that pride of Kriegsmarine shortly before its demise have fought *ONE ON ONE* against one humble polish destroyer. ORP Piorun. *AND HAVE FAILED TO SINK IT!*
For over an hour the biggest battleship of its time have fought against one tiny polish destroyer. For over an hour that tiny destroyer have been firing *LITERALLY ALL OF ITS GUNS* while broadcasting by light and by radio: *"A AM A POLE!"* And Bismarck let that destroyer escape.
That's why Bismarck was sunk in the end. Because that tiny polish destroyer have been harassing Bismarck's crew throughout the night preventing them from getting any sleep.
And then The Brits have arrived.
The carving of coordinates on a coin that was passed to a sailor to ensure the boat could be found
It's not a coin, it's a pocket watch, the same one the guy had at the start of the video and the captain gives to the crew just before Bismark sinks. It's also shown in Sabaton's boat at the end of the video, when the guy closes it.

Another water music video is their Race to the Sea. Other music videos to watch (if you haven't already) are The Unkillable Soldier, Christmas Truce, To Hell and Back, and 7 Pillars of Wisdom (1916 was already mentioned.) I'm not sure if you'd be into it, but they also do animated story video collaborations with YarnHub. Those include First Soldier, Night Witches, Lady of the Dark, and No Bullets Fly.
First battle scene is Bismarck damaging the Prince of Wales followed by the Swordfish biplane launching the torpedo that damaged Bismarck's rudder.
The second battle scene is Bismarck and Rodney exchanging fire while Dorsetshire launched torpedoes.
King George V was heavily involved in the shooting too, but is not really represented in the video.
Pretty sure one of the ships shown returning fire is HMS Sheffield, the tripple turrets at 11:53 are definately BL 6" MK XXIII's with the characteristic middle gun being further back

Hard to say from the video.
Rodney have same displacements of the triple gun towers but he have a third midship as well.
I can't really see if there are 2 or 3 towers.
I made my guess that it's Rodney from reading about the ships positioning and involvement in the main battle but it's really difficult.
I guess we could ask Sabaton who they picked for that spot.
All your questions are usually answers on the Sabaton History TH-cam channel linked at the end of the video, it is the projector superimposed on a maxim machine gun
Sabaton like, when possible, to mix their videos with real people from the event they are filming.
So the man in the beginning is the actual son of the young sailor that was saved.
And the watch with the engravings is the actual watch that the dying older sailor gave to the young sailor before he jumped to the water to be saved.
And, if I did not understand it incorrect, the engravings was the coordinates to where Bismarck did sink. The old man, for some reason, did that before dying.
Sabaton is really god at praising the individual soldier while at the same time asign blame to the rulers.
I can recommend to watch Fields of Verdun, Christmas Truce and Defence of Moscow, these are also made very well.

That's the captain of the Bismarck, Ernst Lindemann engraving the coordinates of the Bismarck in a pocket compass that you see several times in the video.
He then give it to the young sailor that was the last survivor of the Bismarck.
It's actually his son portraying him as the old fisherman as the man himself died one year before the making of the video.

Sabaton is awesome. I found them a few years back and got hooked. Many reactors say "if this was how they taught history in my school, I would have paid attention"
If I might suggest? Try "Christmas Truce" - almost like a movie too. My favorite, for personal reasons, is "No bullets Fly" (the 8:54 second one) animated story version.
Sabaton already have a floating stage its called the Sabaton Cruise! Its an ABSOLUTE BLAST!

That CGI.. You can tell there is a game developer coproducing this. World of Warships did a nice colab.
No on seems to have mentioned it yet, but Primo Victoria, the name on the Boat, is the name of both a song and an album by Sabaton.
A fun detail in this video is the name of the boat that they sail out on. Primo Victoria is the name of their first album, and the title track of said album is one of their more well-known and iconic songs - its about the Normandy landings on D Day and is a staple of their concerts even now over 20 years later.
The captain wrote the coordinates inside the shell of their watch. The same watch the captain of the fishing boat watched.

My goosebob moment is when they reach the coordinates and (the ghost of) Bismark apears out of the fog.
They could pull off playing on the fantail of a few battleships in the US. Most of them are moored on either rivers or harbors.

13:20 as others have mentioned and you yourself, it's coordinates. Basically signifying where to look for the grave of the Bismarck so any sailors on board can have closure for their families when found again. Dark as hell but that's war

Great review of one of my favourite Sabaton videos, and songs. Thank you for so much you've added to my appreciation of the video itself and what went into it's making; certainly they don't hold back or cut corners in their productions.
My own dad was a sailor in the War of the Atlantic, serving in both the merchant navy and the Royal Navy. He had a few prominent scars on his legs to show for it as well lol. That whole story of the sinking of the Bismark is worth looking up, and maybe you'll get to see the Sabaton History channel's video of it. That "beast made of steel" was indeed a very scary monster, as it had the ability to annihilate whole convoys of Allied cargo vessels and had to be stopped at all costs. The cost was indeed high though, as the Bismark managed to sink the "mighty battle cruiser Hood", going down with all but three of her ~1, 500 compliment of two thousand men.
As for the end cards, I can't recommend enough the Enhancer for TH-cam plugin. You can control just about every aspect of your TH-cam watching experience, and I can't live without it now.

Like the Titanic, the Bismarck sank on its maiden voyage. The ship is famous for sinking the flagship of the British fleet (and the largest battleship until the Bismarck) after 15 minutes of fighting. Afterwards the ship was hunted by the entire British fleet. Churchill is said to have ordered: 'Kill that beast!' The Bismarck was finally captured, came under fire from three warships for two hours and then sank.
James Cameron led an expedition to find the ship. When he found it he is said to have said: 'The beast is still alive, just waiting for a new crew.' The captain abandoned and sank the ship because of the fires on deck. The Bismarck did not sink due to enemy fire.
First of all not the largest battleship that goes to Yamato & Musashi the two japanese battleships,Bismarck was not captured at all,it had it's rudder jammed by a torpedo from a Swordfish biplane from Ark Royal so it went in circles so for the allies mainly the British should not take it, it might have been scuttled to prevent it from falling into enemy hands & save lives,it's a theory still.
Bismarck sunk Hood in less then 10mins where a shell hit her aft ammunition magazines (also Hood was a Battlecruiser not a Battleship like Bismarck was).
Had Bismarck gotten Tirpitz with it as the plan was then things might have looked a lot different.
@@TemplarbladeDK I wrote the biggest battleship up to that point. Yamamato and Musashi were built afterwards. And both were a bigger target, because neither survived the war. One of the reasons why battleships are no longer built today.
I didn't write anything about capers. Cameron did not find any leaks in the hull during his diving trips. How did the British sink the ship?
In detail: the hood still had a wooden deck. It was supposed to be replaced with a steel deck, but installation kept getting delayed. The Bismarck fired its shells in a high arc and the ship's side offered no protection.
There was a delay in construction of the sister ship Tirpitz, which is why it was only completed afterwards. After all, this ship survived its maiden voyage and successfully destroyed a weather station in the process. A convoy is said to have taken a detour because of the ship. Soon afterwards the ship was attacked and sunk in the harbor, with great effort. The British wanted to use all means possible to prevent another trip. After that, no German battleships were built and the armaments industry concentrated on the land war against the Soviet Union.

He's also right that the Hood was a Battlecruiser, that is even said in the radio bit at the start of the video.
It was also at the least damaged by the British torpedo plane, because the entire reason it was going in circles and caught up to was because of that. It's debated whether it was sunk by the British or scuttled by the Crew, but I don't think it's been proved either way...

The battle of the Atlantic was the whole naval campaign waged by Germany against UK and US shipping in World War II.
Depicted here are two actual battles of that campaign, part of the Battle of Denmark Strait where Bismarck and Prinz Eugen were engaged by HMS Hood and HMS Prince of Wales that ended with a devastating loss of HMS Hood.
The second battle is the last battle of the Bismarck. Crippled by the torpedo hit, the British Fleet closed in and shot Bismarck to a burning husk of a ship. It happend roughly at the coordinates engraved in the compass.
Amazingly, while the superstructure, gun turrets and most of the Bridge and conning tower were hit quite badly, Bismarck did not sink. The main armor belt held and the crew then prepared scuttling charges to not let the ship be taken and pulled back to shore as a war trophy while the British cruiser HMS Dorsetshire launched a volley of torpedoes to sink the still floating hull of Bismarck.
In the end, a little more than 100 of her crew of 2200 people could be rescued from the sea.
I think Rodney may have fired torpedoes at Bismark. It is uncertain if this actually happened and if they hit. Several torpedoes were fired from the cruisers and did hit. Unfortunately the British admiral refused to let a flight of Swordfish launch their torpedoes at Bismark.
In the night leading up to this engagement 4 British Tribal class destroyers and one of the Free Polish Destroyers overshot their rendezvous point with the British fleet and instead rendezvoused with Bismark and proceeded to launch what few torpedoes at Bismark throughout the night. The Poles helped by charging at Bismark flashing their blinker light with the message "I am a Pole" as well as launching star shells and distracting lookouts and probably taking a few shots with their guns. No confirmed hits from the torpedo runs were recorded.
@@user-gl5dq2dg1j I have to add you are correct but the poles shot until they ran out of ammunition. They then got men on the deck firing small arms at the battleship just to be a damn annoyance. They would have carried on but their antics and the way they engaged Bismarck meant they had to return home early because they were low on fuel. It's a major thing that is overlooked as the actions of the Piorun may have accounted for crew fatigue in the crew of the Bismarck in the next days engagement. To put it in a modern equivalent they were just shitposting and rickrolling the crew of the Bismarck until dawn.
@@user-gl5dq2dg1j Interestingly enough, the Rodney is credited with being pivotal in the engagement because of it's massive 16" main guns. It fired them so much that the deckplates near them were crushed from the sheer volume of muzzle blasts as well as significant damage to the structural members under them. Rivets and Bolts in the hull were loosened by the shock of guns causing minor flooding.
@@richardmazkin9994I think they also went faster than they were 'rated' for to reach the engagement, and If I remember correctly, Rodney was the battleship that thought it was a destroyer and sailed for the shell splashes. I believe Rodney was on her way for some upgrades/refits anyway in the US when Bismark sailed so I'm sure that the damage was tighten up shortly after the battle.

But yeah, her and the Tribals basically kept the crew of the Bismark at general quarters all night and then the big guns unleashed shortly after daybreak. That and I heard the the ship's store was basically raided of all the brandy and good food stuff, but I don't remember where I heard or read this so I don't know how true it was.
Hello Manon.
At the beginning of the video, you see the boat's captain with a silver pocket watch. Later, you see an officer of the Bismark (possibly the captain) carving the Bismark's location into the watch's inner cover surface with a knife. A young sailor takes the watch from the dying officer and leaps overboard and is saved.
That young sailor was the father of the boat's captain seen at the beginning of the video. The temporarily renamed ship goes to the site of the sinking to play over the resting place of the Bismark.
As for the cinematics... Sabaton got in contact with World of Warships (or, WoW got a hold of them upon hearing of the song's subject), who made various videos available to them to cut and paste into their video footage. Thus, the impressiveness of the videos of ships firing their guns and the Bismark, and its demise.
The scene of the Bismark rolling as she sank is 'real'. It was argued for decades that she just sank, but when an expedition found the ship's hull, the turret baskets were empty. The turrets were miles away from the eventual resting place of the ship's hull. The ship HAD 'turned turtle' and shed its turrets at the site of the sinking. The hull, freed of the weight, righted itself as it sank and met the bottom at a place where the ship slid for quite a distance before coming to rest at the bottom of the underwater slope. The Bismark is remarkably intact to this day for a 'sunken ship'.
So, the scene showing the turrets sinking, separate from the ship's hull, is actually accurate.
Good Eye! You noticed the need for multiple ships to make the video, and all the effort and money spent to ensure safety while making this video.
War knows no favorites. War, is indeed hell on earth. One can only pray humanity grows out of this, eventually.
I'm still waiting for the first reactor to spot that after the first sentence in the first verse; "From the mist, a shape, a ship, is taking form", in the short shot from behind the captain, the Bismarck is actually coming out of the fog for a few frames in the right window, before they cut back to the band and Joakim sings the next sentence; "And the silence of the sea..." Brilliant editing and Easter egg! Most reactors realize Bismarck first in the next scene from outside, when the Bismarck appears in front of the fisher boat and you see the sheer size of him in comparison. The level of details in this music video is second to none, even though it's probably some 80% GCI/green screen. There is a small "making of" video for this as well, check it out! Greetings from Sweden! Next video for you should be "Christmas Truce", make sure you watch all the credits as well! 🤘🏻

I believe the coordinates are those of where the Bismarck sank
hence enabling people to find it after the war.

He’s scribing the coordinates for the ship onto a pocket watch. Which he then hands to the sailer who then passed onto his son that was the captain of the trawler.
Bismarck was one of the largest battleships to have been built at that time. It sank the British flag ship HMS hood killing all but 3 of her crew as the ship exploded and sank immediately. Churchill upon hearing the news ordered every ship with a gun to hunt down Bismarck and sink him. Bismarck was a him not a her.
Bismarck had taken damage with the battle with hood and Prince of wales and was heading back to France for repair. Code breakers intercepted a message from Bismarck to a German official as to where the ship was heading. Swordfish torpedo planes got a lucky shot on Bismarck disabling her rudder. That gave the time for the British fleet to catch and dink her. Though the night before the Bismarck was being constantly hounded by a polish destroyer even though the poles had been instructed not to engage.
Its not a pocket watch its a Compass .
About the feasibility of a boat as a stage, the city of Victoria does this by towing a barge in front of the legislature buildings for the symphony splash, and a fair number of people come out in canoes and kayaks for 'front row seats'
2000 sailors perished with the Bismarck. The World of Warships helped with the graphics.
DEFINITELY would love the cinematography in Christmas Truce video ...easily rivals the beginning of Saving Private Ryan if that film slowed the action slightly with less quick cuts

- To me, it looks like your production value increased, with a much cleaner/quieter background now than in soldier of heaven (also, you look tidier, more professional here, maybe it's the hair :D)
- I like your breakdowns and explanations of the things that are required to shoot a scene and the techniques used
- Your audio quality, especially of the music video, seems a bit bad/low quality at times, you yourself are sometimes a bit quiet all of the sudden, is there a way you could improve that?
- I like that you bring yourself into focus when breaking down a certain part or scene (as opposed to remaining a little webcam-screen in the corner of the screen)
- Maybe you can get a bit more into the music, I mean you already connect music and visuals, but maybe more if possible and if you can imagine yourself doing that
To me, you're kinda like TankTheTech but for all the visual things :D

Ok back to meatal, this looks like Bergen, a port city in norway i visited while i did my military service in Sweden. Sabaton always go all the way wtether its in shows or videos. Always gives 100% to the fans, is one reason why i love this band. Other reason is the mix of history and music. You prolly didnt see the name of the small boat they used, is for another reaction i guess:)

Hi Manon, great reaction. Even if I have seen this video dozens of times, I noticed a new detail, because I watched it (with you) from the standpoint of filmmaking and storytelling. Maybe you noticed that Sabaton begin to play in daylight, the part of the guitar solo happens at nightime, and at the end of the song a new day has begun, even if the actual song is only 5 minutes long. But that corresponds with the last fight and sinking of the Bismarck. After a two-day hunt the Bismarck got that torpedo hit that set the steering gear inoperable. After a fight through the night and the following morning, heavily damaged and on fire, the ship was scuttled by their own crew.
And, another aspect, as you mentioned the Titanic: It was Robert Ballard, a professor of oceanography and known for underwater maritime archaeology and archaeology of shipwrecks, who found both, the wreck of RMS Titanic in 1985 and the wreck of the Bismarck in 1989 for the first time. This expedition was supposedly (according to Wikipedia, but not credited on IMDb) accompanied by James Cameron to make a documentary video for National Geographic (Search for the Battleship Bismarck, 1989). Years later, in 2002 James Cameron released his full length documentary "Expedition: Bismarck" for Discovery Channel.

The wreck of Bismarck was discovered on 8 June 1989 by Robert Ballard, the oceanographer responsible for finding RMS Titanic. Bismarck was found to be resting on her keel at a dept of approximately 4,791 m (15,719 ft), about 650 km (400 mi) west of Brest. 48°10′N 16°12′W

Great reaction to an incredible good video and song. And you can't go wrong with Christmas Truce as the next video. It has the same quality as this but is so much more heartbreaking. Speaking of heartbreak, their song "No bullets fly" is a guarantee for tears. (But you have to watch the animated story video)

Christmas truce is made by a Hollywood film crew so well it shows. And the song is so good.
Joakim has stated that they where getting soaked by water from the swells and the film crew was sipping hot coffee and had a great time :)

Interesting factoid: The British PBY that spotted the Bismarck as he fled to France was piloted by US Navy Ensign Leonard B. “Tuck” Smith, on secret assignment to train British pilots on flying the PBY.
Ooohhh - didn't know about the director, thank you for pointing that out! That makes total sense. It all felt put together by people who've been at it for a while.
The video is also remarkably accurate in the visuals and the documented history. All the ship/aircraft models are top notch replicas of the real ships and the sequence of events is very true to the historical battle. Even tiny details like the British sailors hats only saying HMS instead of HMS ShipsName because as a wartime security measure they removed the ships names that were displayed on the hatbands during peacetime.
The attention to details in this video is absolutely amazing. :)

This was THE song that got me hooked on Sabaton, so I am always happy when people talk about it. And I especially love when filmmakers watch it, because they went ALL OUT for this video.
If you didn't know, Sabaton made this in collaboration with Wargaming, specifically their game World Of Warships. They had HD, almost 1 to 1 recreations of ships from blueprints, including the Bismarck, and Wargamings cinematic staff to help.

@@manondereeper I am 66 and been to a lot of concerts over the years. NOTHING compares to what going to a Sabaton concert is like. The cheers, the tears very deferent ages and groups, the sing along's. What other group can have a song about a WW2 German Panzer division sing it to a 250,000 screaming crowd in Poland.
They have a historic background to their songs that you can read about. And they even.have a history channel where they break down the history behind the songs.
All things in this video, boats, planes etc is really0 good done and authentic.

I expect you know them, but some Nightwish videos and Auri videos are akso made by professional filmakers. For example; The Islander and Night13 respectively. Both also have "Making of" videos showing the issues of onsite shooting, combined with CG, and a custom in studio set for Night13. Might be interesting to combine the video with the making of video after it.

What got me laughing was that you chose the exact moment of the titanic movie when a bunch of falling people caused the mooring cylinder to tilt by their weight, clearly showing it is a prop.
They did in fact play out of the Water "in the middle of nowhere"

First off, I love the Jinjer shirt, I have one myself, what an amazing band! I really appreciate your take on the cinematography of "Bismarck" by Sabaton. I would also suggest "1916" and "Christmas Truce " by Sabaton to get a feel of what they are up to, you might enjoy those as well. As a side note, a friend of mine in college was the grandson of the pilot who spotted the Bismarck. He did this while flying the PBY Catalina flying boat that was shown for about 2 seconds in the film. He was actually a U.S Navy pilot teaching the RAF Costal Command pilots how to fly the plane when the hunt for the Bismarck happened. As the USA was not officially in the war yet, this was kept quiet for quite some time.
The guy on the visser vessel is the son of the captain. and you see the captain in the start check the coordinates and then you see his dad change the coordinates. And i dont know if they are accurate but knowing sabaton it will be near it i think just to prevent people visit the grave.Sabaton guys are way way big history buffs. And this was made with the gaming company so they made the vfx and they use green screens and all there is a behind the scenesparts.
