I understand this song is based on amulets that were found, and believed to be, protection incantations, "bracteates" of the Germanic Migration period. Kai is chanting some of these incantations which have never successfully been translated. Heilung's music often has a historical basis though I know Kai (shaman background before Heilung) also goes on 'trips' to aid with the music's construction. In the case of Maria's lyrics, there seems to be a general consensus that Anoana is the 'Landawariar' or guardian of the land. Part of Maria's song is kulning, or ancient Scandinavian cattle calling.
As for Maria and Kai's headresses, they are based on real finds. Not just ancient images such as that found on the Gundestrup Cauldron, but also in relation to the Bad Durrenberg burial. That shaman, a 9000 year old 30-40 year old woman, was buried with a 8 month baby who based on their genetics, were fourth or fifth degree related. She had an antler headdress and was buried in a sitting position with the baby nested between her legs and the entire burial filled with red ochre. Based on the many grave goods archaeologists believe she was probably a religious leader. She undoubtedly had a striking position among her people, probably furthered by her genetic malformation of her vertebrae, which caused heath issues which most likely included an involuntary eye twitch when she tilted her head. Additionally she had her front top teeth filed to the pulp. Not but 3 feet away another pit was discovered and dated to 600 years after her burial which contained two more deer headdresses pointed towards her grave further supporting her importance hundreds of years after her death. It may be that Anoana just might be the Bad Durrenberg shaman.
Heilung isn't just a 'rock band' but rather 'amplified history'. Their concerts are 'rituals'. I don't know how they do it, but they get to a place of something primal and human which links all people together. It transcends genre. Sadly, they seem rather stuck in the metal stereotype though their music is any thing but that in my opinion. I haven't met anyone who wasn't moved by their music.

I don't think she was fighting the animal; it was her spirit animal, and she was just waiting for the right time to merge with it. When she met it as a child, it was too soon, and she had to wait, and we see the moment when she and the beast are ready.
    My interpretation; YMMV.

Ever since the video came out, I've been trying to understand the ending scene and your explanation makes total sense to me. Now it makes me think that she had been calling out to the creature that she saw as a little girl; like a companion or her animal spirit, the one that would complete her, turning Anoana in the Warrior of the Land, she just wasn't ready, like you said, that's why (in my opinion) she got no response from it when she greeted the animal by shaking her head/antlers, the creature didn't recognised her as a part of it

    • @parnilsson8283

My interpretation was quite similar. As I guess many others I thought of it as her finally merging fully with nature. But your explanation makes definetely sense, and it's even more how to say, .....grand. It's herself merging with her animal part. Beautiful

So the animal in the end is not a bison, it's a muskox. Muskoxen are not agressive but they are a threatened, protected species so it's still not likely that the girl was hugging a real one. ;)

Muskoxen are held in captivity ( not in Alaska, but other states and countries allow it) as their fine undercoat is very valuable and traditionaly spun and knitted into extremely light warm clothing. Finding a private farm with muskoxen would not be that difficult. As far as the aggression, the herd bulls regularly ram each other in much the same manner that sheep do. If agitated they are certainly not above smacking a human around. All wild animals will fight if cornered. You would not be guaranteed to be safe to approach a herd. Given the Choice they will run, if being outpaced, they will circle and present their formidible head gear to the attackers. Also when pursued the herd bull will drop out and face the pursuers to help distance the heard. All things I have read in print from the university large animal program, and then observed in the wild from a herd on Nunivak island.

The high pitched singing part that Maria Franz sings is actually called Kulning which from ancient Scandinavian Nordic herding calls that women used to call in cows, sheep, and other livestock from distances. I love how Heilung incorporates history into their songs rather rituals that they perform at their concerts. I must say the best thing about Heilung is their live performances. If you're curious about the theme of the song...
Birthing a child during an eclipse is a special event in Old Norse culture - the child is thought to have a special relationship with animals, assuming their form and giving life to the dead. The drum beating ceremony during the eclipse is a warning to two Nordic wolves that would chase the Sun and moon. If the wolf, Skoll, caught the Sun or if the wolf, Mani, caught the moon during solar or lunar eclipses, it was thought to be a sign that Ragnarok approached (The End Times in a nutshell). The drums served as a means to scare the wolves off and away from ever catching the Sun or moon.

A muskox. Also an error by Heilung because muskoxen were not present in Europe in the medieval period, having died out around 7,000 BC. They were reintroduced to Norway in 1932 (hunted to extinction) then again in 1947.

Muskoxen are survivors of the last Ice Age. Note the similarity of coat with that of the woolly rhinoceros or woolly mammoth. Of these types, only the muskox suvived. Their insulating belly underfur, quiviut, is hand-combed out and is among the most (possibly the most) expensive fur in the world. Usually woven to make sweaters.
And Heilung is just a brilliant concoction.

In mythology / prhistoric religion the dears or the animals with horn and cloves are female deaties. From Egypt : Hathor to the whole continent off Eurpåa and Asia you find that these horn and cloved animals are conected to fre female power.

But Death in this case is not the End! Thats important! It's just a new beginning - represented by the Baby on the Fur and the Spirit of the Mother moving on. It's Shamanism.

Heilung is telling a story, all their music and videoes are werry eazy to understand, when you get the story they are telling and the story is a prediction of the re awakening of scandinavia and nature., even magic. They are singing to the earth and to the mountains, and they are predicting special and magical people starting to come to life.

you should take a close look onto eivor from the faroe islands. absolut stunning artist, vocally unrivaled, a classically trained sopran with a masters degree in traditional nordic vocal techniques. she also made music for the last kingdom and god of war.
she recently signed at seasons of mist.
how big is your boat? from what i see i'd guess something around 32 foot?

I really like your reaction. Heilung is one of my favourite as well and "Anoana" got a beautiful video!
If you like to extend on metal, you might want to check out the Rammstein videos. Especially the younger ones like "Zeit" and "Adieu" are fantastic. However, the one I'd like the most for its epic proportions is "Deutschland" (th-cam.com/video/NeQM1c-XCDc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=fzrAQ4IetbEf6iZl)... For all fairness though, I'd like to mention that the Rammsteins lead singer Till Lindemann has faced some serious aligations. And although legally nothing stuck, the witness accounts still leave a very bad taste. Still, Music and Videos are great, so I leave it you to decide.

Well in a way its experimental archology, while the scientists find certain materials its a question for what was it really used. That parts of it might simply be instruments was an idea. And even that it probably wasn't bound to todays standards. Since a lot of it is based on experimentation and speculation it will be imposdible to find true or false results but zhey are finding results how those systems might have worked.

Pretty sure that is Kvalvika in Lofoten and that is the midnight sun so there is no sunset...oh , that creature with the horn is a Hulder, my grandfather fucked one those when he was a shepard in Etnnedal in Norway.in the 1930's. Thats what he told me and I choose to believe him, he grabbed her hair and tore it off and had the scalp mounted on his wall as evidence, My grandfather rocks.
