When my GP told me that I would need to stay on PPI for the rest of my life...first I got a new doctor...my new doctor, an osteopathic practitioner, told me to go on a dairy and gluten free diet. After just a few weeks on the new diet I was off the meds !
Find out WHY you have reflux before you take meds longterm !
Without acid in your stomach to extract the nutrients from your foods you will become deficient and develop all sorts of ailments.

You always have acid in your stomach, even when on a PPI and H2 antagonist. Please don't go throwing around medical advice unless you're a doctor, and then if you are please cite your sources. In this day and age there are more average to bad doctors practicing and altogether too much pseudo-medical science.

25 year old male diagnosed with a hiatal hernia about 6 years ago. I was on ppi for years and it pretty much destroyed my digestive system through malabsorption and it caused inflammation due to causing random bouts sometimes back to back of either diarrhea or constipation. I tried getting off them one time and I burnt a hole in my esophagus but now I'm discovering how crucial your diet is to stomach acid. Eat clean and eat fiber, stay away from sugar and fried foods, have salmon, veggies and some meat once a week. Do not consume superfluous food only eat based on utility. I've been off ppi for a week or so now and my whole digestive system is out of wack but clearly returning to normal. On ppi I would use the bathroom multiple times a day...now without it and a proper diet I use the toilet once every two or three days and I pass full stool as opposed to diarrhea or skinny shards. Ppi has also caused me to have excruciating hemorrhoids due to how difficult it is to pass broken stool or diarrhea for weeks on end. As I dont overuse my bowels all day and I eat to supplement my intestinal health I have easier bowel movements that are even healing my hemmrhoids. I took ppi for a stomach hernia but I know others have actual chronic reflux that is not dependent on an anatomical problem but I urge everyone to explore their diet before giving in to a lifelong ppi subscription. It's not worth it...many anti acid medications are criminally undocumented in how they cause cascading effects in your body and I have seen three gastro doctors none of which have actually explained all the side effects and in fact downplayed them as coming from erroneous studies.

What's stopping you from getting surgery for your hernia? I have never been able to find a diet that successfully stopped my reflux and am stuck on ppis and unfortunately having issues like yours as well. Surgery seems to be my only option. I've decided to pursue the linx surgery as well.

I heard that people with these conditions really have hypochlorhydria (low stomach acid, and not too much). Lifestyle change is the only way to get off PPI’s. Eliminate sugar, high fat, coffee, tea, citrus, spicy, chocolate, mints, alcohol and tobacco. Exercise, resistance and cardio 5 days a week with intermittent fasting (18-6) small meals (2 per day) lose weight (BMI near or below 25.) I was diagnosed with Barretts. Took 40 mg nexium for 15 years. Luckily, Barrett’s went away but breaking from the PPI is tricky. First go to the 20 mg OTC, for several months. Then get a pill splitter and cut the 20 tablets in half. Take 10 mg a day for several months and supplement with a 150 mg. Zantac before bed. Then take the 10 mg every other day for at least 2 months (with the nighttime Zantac.) monitor yourself along the way. You might have to stay at a level longer. Then stop the nexium, continue the Zantac. If so far so good, drop the Zantac to 75 mg at night. That’s where I am at and I will stay there. If I have a late or larger than normal dinner, I revert to the 150 Zantac for that night. One other tip. Get 4” “bed lifts” for the head of your bed (extra pillows won’t do it.) That slight elevation will help keep stomach acid from rising up as you sleep. Good luck to you. Any questions I’ll be glad to help.

I'm 42 and have just come off my PPI after 9 years. I'm two weeks in. Along with adjusting my diet to remove as much sugar as possible and taking one dose of magnesium indigestion liquid before bed and I've never felt better in years.
I would wake up and immediately feel discomfort in my stomach on ppi. Then throughout the day I just didn't feel right and I became determined to get off them and fix the route of the problem if I could.
It does annoy me though my GP would be happy to give me them indefinitely and almost all of my family and friends, especially the men, take PPI long term.

THEN when you come off PPI's you can have some of these same feelings again either from the addiction to the medication or the re-acidification of your stomach which is not as strong due to missing natural lining.

I've got to say that having GERD and a Hiatus Hernia for over 10 years, this Dr explained things better than any Specialist I have seen. Currently, my systems have been worse than ever, tightness and discomfort in my chest and back. Also, it is hard to swallow. My last endoscopy showed a 3 cm Sliding Hiatus Hernia (this was 2 years ago). The Linux system sounds great but I don't think the NHS in the UK offers this which is shut a shame. Has anyone else had this procedure done? If so, what are your thoughts?

The drug Tamsulosin was the cause of my GERD I have an incompetent sphincter that allows stomach acid to burn the hell out of my oesophagus, PPI for 6 weeks and see how it goes then I want to see about surgery again it needs private payment.

@@akwasiasare3456 I paid over £2000 for tests and they show no GERD but the Hiatus Hernia is there and it is trapping the Vagus nerve when I eat and then work. This causes direct pain and if I persist trying to carry, walk or lift the reaction cause vomiting
I managed to pull the stomach down whilst deep breath out and it went off, but came back as soon as anything was eaten and the stomach had contents. I need the hiatus between the cru to be repaired and no linx as there is actually no acid coming up at all during the 24hr acid test. What worries me now is that they will not just do the repair without the linx as it is too cheap without having one done. The NHS will NOT do a simple repair as it is not worth doing to an older man so am expecting a bill of £10000 privately.

This video is old but is the most informative and real honesty video i have seen to date on reflux!
When he said there was a link with heart arrhythmia and low magnesium due to the PPI, the penny dropped for me! I have been on the PPI between 1-2 years but have recently been diagnosed with heart arrhythmia. Couldn't understand where it came from as no history of heart problems in family. Tried operation to treat but could not treat it and have been advised that it is quite common for it to return, even after a successful surgical procedure to treat. Now I'm on 2 sets of different meds to treat the arrhythmia and may need more if the current meds not manage it?
My reflux problem had slowly gotten worse to the point that it came up my throat constantly through the day, leaving a fowl green taste at back of mouth and started to change my voice and irrigate it. Hugely anxious about coming off the PPI (in case of severe rebound) and how to go about it? I've gone and seen a specialist, and have had the camera placed down throat in to my stomach. He couldn't give any explanation for my reflux problems and would only dismiss my concerns about being on PPI long term. Wish there was a specialist near me with the same professional care, honesty and understanding as the specialist in this video!

I was given some at the ER when i had black stool one day in case of an ulcer (rightfully so) but then I had an egd done. They found a little inflammation and the very beginning of barrett's esophagus and of course wanted me on a ppi forever. I'm a large guy. 6'3" and 346 pounds who doesn't exercise and has a poor diet and I argued that if i changed those things, wouldnt i improve my disposition? But they want to push the ppi anyway despite already having a low chance that the barrett's esophagus will progress. So why should i take something that has notable side effects (it was giving me abdominal cramps) when i can just make life changes.

I’ve been prescribed a PPI for 14 years! Only recently did I learn they’re for short term use. I’ve tried so many times to get off them by weaning down and every time it fails. And it was likely a weak LES from pregnancy that caused the GERD. And that’s fixable. There’s no reason for me to be on these meds. But nobody ever decided to figure out the cause of the GERD. I’m so sick from these meds. IBS, SIBO, malabsorption, iron deficiency, etc.

Interesting take on PPIs. From what I got is only take them as directed short term 6 weeks max. Acid in your stomach is good up untill is uncontrollable, which a healthy Diet can help prevent that. But a combination of low acid, medication carcinogenic factors, Alcohol or foods high in toxins can trigger esophagus cancer. Makes sense, since ppl often go back to their bad diet habbits and alcohol consumption after being on “feel better “ PPIs. Acid not only inflames your esophagus but it might just protect you from carcinogenic diets.

    Great informative video.
I would like to suggest an easy to try alternative approach that maybe could avoid all of this. Just drink a couple glasses of water and jump up and down for a couple minutes to jiggle the stomach back down to its normal position. No harm or cost in giving this approach a try
Forty years ago, I did an activity which forced part of my stomach up through or past the diaphragm. It was a couple months later that I suddenly started having severe stomach pains. I was initially misdiagnosed by a doctor as having ulcers. It was a couple of years of misery before I realized that the doctor was wrong and I had gastric reflux disease, or GERD. Often, GERD happens naturally without a clear cause. More so with older people. Normally, the esophagus sphincter and the diaphragm sphincter muscles line up and reinforce each other. If part of the stomach is pushed or pulled up through the diaphragm, the sphincter muscles don’t line up and stomach acid can more easily leak into the esophagus, causing GERD.
Other people suggest drinking warm or hot water to relax the muscles, I would suggest cold water so that the heavy water will stay in the stomach longer. I would also suggest doing it first thing in the morning so the water won’t affect the digestion process on other food. It may take a repeat on a few successive days for the esophagus to adapt to the new longer length for the stomachs to stay in its new proper position. I would repeat the process anytime I got heartburn or acid taste in my mouth. I have been trouble free for over 35 years now. I later learned of a gastroenterologist in Michigan who recommends this process also; maybe others now also.
The body needs strong hydrochloric acid in the stomach to trigger the esophageal sphincter to close, to break down bulk foods generally, and to specifically separate protein into the amino acid components to be effectively absorbed into our blood stream from the small intestines for use by our body to make new proteins. Most or all GERD medicines block the production of or neutralize the hydrochloric acid which then interferes with protein digestion and interferes with esophageal sphincter closing. Both of those actions are counterproductive.

This is such a great video and I wish I had seen it sooner. I am currently 24 years old and I have been on Omeprazole 40mg a day for about 6 years now and only recently realized my difficulties breathing were caused by my acid reflux after countless doctors visits and years of frustration and confusion. I even had a period where doctors thought I had asthma as well.
Better eating/diet habits have helped but it seems that I would need to be extremely strict with my diet in order to not have respiratory reflux. Not to mention any sort of exercise has become extremely difficult since my reflux seems to amp up during exercise and makes it hard for me to get a full breath.
Because of all this, I am looking to get surgery, hopefully TIF esophageal fundiplication to be exact. Traditional fundiplications (Nissen) involve way too much mutilation and cutting for me to be comfortable with and have higher prevelance of side effects such as bloating/inability to throw up or burp and other methods such as the linx seem more inconsistent in effectiveness and have side effects such as difficulty swallowing. It is a hard decision to make since no option is perfect but I will hopefully be getting a TIF surgery soon after I take the necessary tests.
My options at this point are to keep taking Omeprazole for the rest of my life and still deal with symptoms, have an extremely limited diet in order to prevent symptoms (ideally), or get a surgery and deal with whatever possible side effects they might cause if any and hopefully no longer have symptoms and no longer take PPIS.
I am ready for this chapter of my life to be over.

My dad had acid all his life and never took medication. Acid killed him at the age of 57 he got stomach cancer. So you have to see pros and cons, I know that everyone want to stay off medication, but would you rather be vitamins deprived (which you can take supplements) or died from cancer caused by acid. If there is a third solution, some of these doctors who are criticizing medication, better come with some magical solution. They are just confusing patients and I feel that doctors are going to become obsolete in 15-20 years, because they are simply good for nothing, they don't listen to their patients and many of them are pretending to know more then they do.

@Szilárd Maku This is a highly presumptuous, ignorant comment! You have no idea why his Dad had acid reflux. He may have had a large hiatal hernia, or his body may have been producing too much acid. How would you know if it was a lifestyle choice or not?

Me too. I’ve been on PPI’s on and off for almost 20 years and am just now experiencing the horrible negative side effects. I’ve weaned myself down to 1/2 a pill every other couple of days and and now trying to stop taking them all together. I’m so pissed that my many doctors over the years never ever remotely suggested that I stop taking these OTC drugs. Money grubbing bastards paid off by Big Pharma.

He has valid points, but I would recommend to do more research. The video is sponsored by the Albany “Surgical” Center which is basically incentivized to “recommend” as many surgeries as possible. I’m sure they are being responsible with this, but at the end of the day, incentives matter.
Surgery works very well for most people, but not all people. In my opinion, exhaust all options, and if nothing works, go for surgery. There’s no going back once you go under the knife.
That’s how I am approaching my almost 2 year struggle with GERD. I’m going to try a few more things, but if nothing works, I might end up going for surgery myself. Hopefully, diet/lifestyle change will suffice.

Great addition to my search for information. My goal is to improve my gut health in order to get get off cholesterol and reflux drugs. I am on omeprazole for Barrett’s. My confusion is over the issue of too little stomach acid causing reflux. If that’ s so, why are antacids, PPIs etc, needed to reduce acid? I understand that there are 2 issues around acid - the PH in the gut and the corresponding leak into the esophagus due to a faulty valve. Does a a lower PH in the gut help the valve stay closed, therefore eliminating the reflux? Thanks for any clarification. BTW, I have been using ACV and lemon juice to lower PH. Not sure if that’s appropriate for my situation. Am getting an upper GI next month.
