MINI Clubman Cooper S 2016 (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

  • MINI Clubman is now in its second generation. The Clubman first appeared in similar form back in 2007. The previous generation also had vertically split tailgate, but access to the back seats was through suicide doors on the right side. Despite me liking the quirky Clubman, I’m not surprised it wasn’t a sales hit. In the new MINI Clubman you get full-size rear doors on both sides, and because the Clubman is 7 cm wider than the hatch, and has 17 cm longer wheelbase, three adults can fit in the back. Fold the seats, and you get 1250 litres of loading space, which is more than in BMW 1 series or Toyota Auris. And in 5-seat configuration you get 360 litres, similar to 1 Series and Toyota Auris.

    Even though, Clubman is a bit weird as a design, is much prettier than the 5door MINI... They should have only the Clubman, as the 5door alternative...

    For anyone watching this. I own a 2017 Mini Cooper S Clubman in Singapore where i believe most of our cars have been modified with bigger cat converters. But still if you want to achieve crackling sounds, change your gear to manual, rev to 3k RPM or above and let the engine brake do the work. I believe you’ll hear the pops and crackle. Might need to listen closely but i believe most Cooper S Clubman has this. Try it out for yourself guys and enjoy the car! :)

    Just got a 2019 S All 4, manual. This review is one of the best. Don’t know about 2016 model, but when the rear doors are open, the lights in the bumper will also operate as tail lights and turn signals.

    Drove a diesel Clubman automatic the other day.
    By far the greatest impression I got from it was the suspension. Perhaps because of the longer wheelbase, but you could almost glide through bumps and potholes.
    I have a family and I did love this car, but somehow ... I still don't know why, but I just cannot consider it. Maybe I would hate to expose this car to dogs and kids vomit or perhaps this style just isn't MY style.
    A great car though! Really worth the money ...

    Ride is very good. Yes, it moves positively and grips the road perfectly. If ur 6 foot/+ then, it is not really that comfortable. The entertainment/sat nav/and general car "information" and services is mostly through a screen/toggle wheel system/knobs/colours - all designed by a 14 year old idiot - it is simply a multi-function mess. If you lend this car to friend/family, they will need a 20 minute lecture on functions - and a 3 minute lecture on the keys. Rear visibility is bad. Getting out of the front seat is bad, if you're not a dwarf.

    Just put an order for a fully equiped Clubman SD All4 in thunder Grey, black 18" spokes, tinted windows and all black interior (with sunroof to be able to let some light in)... Cant wait to get rid of my 2013 120D...

    Although I like the 2nd generation Clubman. I perfer the quirkiness of the first generation. I have a 2013 Clubman S and I have not seen one that looks like mine yet.... That being said, it might be hard to part with for a 2nd Gen

    I still think I would go 5 door hatch out of all of them. Rear seats rarely get used in my car. But it would be nice to have the easy access when loading things or people. It also weighs nearly 100 kilos less than a comparable clubman, not to mention at least €1000.

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +MetikalMan That's the thing, in 5-door MINI access to the rear is not as good, as you'd expect (the rear doors are very narrow), and legroom is not much better, than in 3-door hatch. For me it's 3-door/cabrio or Clubman.

    IMO inside of this reviewed Clubman looks similar to a Hyundai, particularly materials quality & backseat area :( (we just inherited a '14 Santa Fe Sport).
    We're picking up our Clubman S w/manual drive any day now. The Showroom model's appearance was much more luxurious than one shown in Review. Ours will be in LapisLuxury Blue, white hood stripes, white roof, w/blue leather sport seats & ability to change drive modes (aren't drive modes standard in US ?) which my husband really likes. Clubman S was our choice over the Land Rover Evoque. Yes, they are totally different & backseat space is similar, but we wanted a more easy-going style & I've always wanted a MINI. Now that our 2 oldest sons (have 3) will be getting their own cars...perfect timing ! Now our oldest wants a MINI 2 door.

    @magicaldream 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think this is the perfect mix of Mini -lifestyle and practicality. The styling is great too. Really stands out from the boring family cars you see on the roads today. How was the tyre noise from the inside btw?

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +magicaldream Even if there was any, it was masked by wind noise from the gills behind front wheel arches. BTW, the car was on winter tyres.

    • @danh1773
      @danh1773 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I got the 16" run-flats and find them a bit noisy (and bumpy) on our poor English roads. A lot of our roads are very rough and it creates a roar. Might be better on the Continent, at least in Germany.

    Love all your videos, both in English and Polish. How lucky are we, hubby and I, him being English and my being Polish, to have you speaking both languages!
    I’ve only just realised that you do your reviews in English as well; so far we’ve been watching the Polish ones with English subtitles. 🙂
    I absolutely love how you show those things in a car that no one normally mentions (apart from the usual ones of course) and it does often affect what people think of a car.
    We were considering buying a Renault Escape or similar and your review has changed our minds! Well, your review of the Renault and this review, here…
    I own a Mini Clubman with the “suicide” door, simply because I absolutely adore its looks (I have the “chocolate” metallic version with brown leather seats- to die for, very rare) and it’s manoeuvrability. But yes, I have always loved Minis, so did my husband. We’re definitely suckers for the retro feel or, strictly speaking, we simply lean much more towards the beauty of curved lines in a vehicle. I’d buy any car with the looks of the 1950’s Jaguars or the 328 Roadster BMW. But, damn, no one makes good-looking cars like that anymore.
    Looks-wise, the Mini is about the only contemporary car we can say we truly love. Really. And it’s got some “lungs”. 😉It drives like a dream, even the older models.
    Except for the Mini Countryman. That is no longer a Mini! 😋 😉 😂 (The head lights, the head lights…!!! 🤦🏽‍♀️)
    Thanks to your review, we will probably reconsider buying (another) Mini, “slightly” bigger this time, but still a handsome car. Definitely a Clubman.
    It’s like you said- your neighbour would’ve been fine now simply buying the new Clubman.
    Although I have doubts about fitting three large-ish dogs in the boot of this car (and a child on the back seat)… 😯 🤔
    As per your other video… Perhaps I should take our son and the three dogs to a Mini showroom?? 🤩 😂
    Thank you for your (and Ania’s) great work on the videos!

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! It really makes my day to read comments like yours. Yes, the channel is bilingual, although this is about to change. Don't worry, I continue doing reviews in English, I'll just post them on a separate channel.
      Three large(ish) dogs sound like a Skoda Superb estate or one of those combivans like the Berlingo.
      These days with the chip shortage and all, I don't expect dealers to be too accommodating, but I'd totally ask if I can bring my menagerie or maybe a travel cage (if you're using one) and try fitting it in the car. You can always bring a tarp or a blanket so the dogs don't soil the upholstery.
      We recently bought a Countryman, which is larger still, but IMO it's definitely not a car for three dogs.

    Good job Marek. Any chance you get your hands on a new audi Q7 hybrid? This would make an interesting review, IMO. Also, you should drive the Tesla Model X preferably or its older sibling Model S, in their aggressive form, P90d or P85d. Specifically, you could test the new auto-pilot features and ludicrous mode, besides the usual stuff.
