That is not a $35K GTI. Only the base S comes with the tartan plaid seats that the car in the video has. Fully loaded with performance package and lighting package, the GTI S is priced at about $29K.
When he said "out" it all started to make sense. 35k in Canadian dollars.
The tester looked really pleased with himself, when he found out the rear doors needed closing in a particular order.

What he doesn't make clear is that for the price of a base GTi you can have a Clubman Cooper S pretty well fully loaded with metallic paint, full leather, sat nav, all the bells and whistles plus you get a car with bags of character!!

If I had 35k to spend I would just buy a Golf R, or a Focus RS. Why spend 35k on a loaded GTI when you could spend well under 30k

Yes I understand but considering that price is spot on to what a Golf R cost I would consider it. With that being said I didn't realize that their pricing is based off of Canada prices.

You should compare the GTI to the John cooper works clubman
2008 mini clubman 200,000 miles, still running strong no problems. It rips through twisty roads. Use Castrol 10w-30 titanium fluid or Magnetic for a long lasting car. Getting around 50-70 mpgs

Wouldn't it be more prudent to compare the GTI with a standard Mini Cooper S?
Car length, boot space and legroom are closer to the Clubman than the regular Mini.

I've own both and trust me the mini is so much more cheaply made. Plastic everything, interior literally slowly fell apart. The arm rest inside the mini are only held on by plastic clips. Both of the arm rest broke off just by resting arms on them. The gti has solid arm rest built into the door. And thats just one thing. Literally mini coopers are trash. I'll never own another one, the gti is leaps and bounds better.

i have the new mini clubman 2016 john cooper works and every accessories yeah cost a bomb but hey its my personal preference. love the looks love the drive only down shift not very comfortable on long journeys.

I'm considering the same car, why not comfortable on long drives? We take our 2012 Golf R on all kinds of long drives.
plugboot its not very comfortable as you start to get bum ache and start fidgeting alot after more than 2hrs of a drive but i have recaro seats in mine so i don't know what it is like with standard or leather seats.
I'm also considering this for my wife, have you had any issues with the car so far? Reading a lot of negatives about the mini on their reliability, kind of scares me.

I paid 25.991 for my GTI sport with PP and LP. I have also flashed the car to stage 1 for $799 . I am eating 5.0 stangs for breakfast.

This really is not a comparison...except for price. The clubman doesn't look like a hatchback to me. More of a wagon. Has much less power.
New GTI's are selling for $22k before TTL.
I've owned both and I'll buy another gti anytime, I'll never buy a cooper again. Cheapest interior ever in coopers. Its all put together with plastic clips that break and the whole arm rest will fall off. The plastic ring for the shift boot will break off just from shifting, the trim around the guages are literally just glued on and will fall off. Its total shit. Gti is leaps and bounds better as far as the interior and that's just a start.
Gti has no kind of ingagement. Steering wheel feed back is boring. Body roll is there bad. Had to lower mine to not feel it. It's not like the mk5. A totally different car

$35k ! no way buddy. $25-26k for a new GTI is the max I would pay. Mini cooper, nooo way. The mini is actually one car that would actually be less reliable and more expensive to fix and maintain than the vw/gti; and thats hard to do !
I'd take neither. Reliability issues would be my concern.
Its a shame Toyota doesn't get into the hatchback market.

Colton Allen The Civic hatch is coming too in SI and possibly Type-R forms. Honda is just as reliable as Toyota but a tad more better performance wise.
I don't care much for Honda though.

Totally agree!!!! sidenote I had an 06 gti with a DSG and totally loved it. If I had to choose a 2016 hot hatch now Id have to go with the Focus ST.
