We use vanguard for our roth because that's what we started with ten years ago. A lot of other companies have gotten so good in these last decade, competition is great! We also invest it in their mutual funds, mainly because we automate it to buy every month. I dont think there's a way to automate buying ETFs unless in a mutual fund. Maybe M1 can, but other than that, not sure.
Nothing wrong with keeping it simple! Vanguard changed the game with their index funds and they still have the best reputation amongst any brokerage company in my opinion. But, for those who want to do just a little bit more, I think other brokerage firms have had to offer more to attract away Vanguard customers. Cheers Alan!

Hi Jake. Thank you for your videos. They are very educational. I noticed you bought call option on SPY expiring on Jan 21 2022 with strike of 470. At the same time you sold call options on them for same expiration date but higher strike price. I like this strategy. The question I have is that how do you manage them if the stock keeps climbing? I understand that if the stock goes down you will make money from your calls you sold and once you make more than 50% you buy them back but when would you buy back your calls you sold or when do you sell your call options if the stock keeps going up? Specially in leap options. Thank you again, keep up the good work.
Hey hyar! Yes, in my Schwab account that is just a debit spread. My profits are capped basically as SPY goes up, but I am okay with that. Check out my video on this trade here: th-cam.com/video/4Tv0RN_tO1c/w-d-xo.html
I am a new subscriber. I am in my fifty plus yo but it isn’t too late to learn about various investment options. Someone on a TSP Facebook group mentioned your TH-cam channel.
Great video Jake, I learn so much from your videos. I just want to mention that $734,000, assuming 3% inflation , is about $372,000 in today’s dollars. Using the “4% rule” you could safely take out $14,800 a year. Not enough to retire on! Of course you’ll be much better off than that because you’ll be contributing to your 401K for the next 23 years. Just make sure you contribute enough to that because all the option trading stuff is risky.
Great video. Glad you're doing well and looking forward to a great 2022. We'll see if the market continues on the roaring uptrend as the fed starts paring back.
We love you! Best of luck. USAF, congrats. You must have a level head and be very smart to have achieved so much success. Great personality. But why not get a day job, a regular 8 hour shift? Like become a nurse, just one example. It's the best way to meet people if you want a relationship. The stock market isn't perfect. I've been wanting to say this for a while. Still learning a lot from you, even if I don't use the knowledge. Thanks. You are an inspiration.
Thanks YalkOne! If I can put all my time and energy in to TH-cam, the financial upside for me is unlimited almost. I want to achieve financial freedom and independence as fast as possible. Great work, Jake! Have you pulled the trigger on ADBE calls? It looks to be stabilized around SMA200. I joined your channel membership, and look forward to the new year.
Hey Linus! Yeah, the $550 seems to be a strong level of support for ADBE, but I've been staring at the stochastics waiting for the technical indicator to turn up. Once it gets above 35 I would like to make a quick trade on it for some easy $$$.
Hi Jake. Enjoy your videos as always. Could you make a video of how to retire early and how you started your path to retirement early? For example. I am not in debt and would like to start the process of retirement early. Really enjoy your videos and I'm also from Wisconsin.
I love your wheel income strategy on SPY. I'm an O-3 as well and getting out after 10 years when my PSLF kicks in. 5 more years on a ship where I can basically pocket my BAH, and I'll easily hit the $500k goal. Who needs the full 20 anyway?
Haha, I did 6 years in the Air Force and I feel like I don't need to stay in the military anymore. I'll make a video soon about my SPY wheel strategy once I have $400,000 in my brokerage account. I can live off the premiums alone without touching the principle. Cheers TNB!
Love your page and info. Quick question if you were only on the Charles schwab platform with a Roth Ira and brokerage. What would that set up look like. Only using index funds, Hypothetically speaking of course.
Hey Zero! You can buy and sell any ETFs without paying a commission with Schwab. You can't go wrong buying and holding long term the S&P 500 index ETF (either Statestreet's SPY or Vanguard's VOO).
Hey Jake, I'm really happy for your success! My goal next year is to learn how to do options trading and will definitely go through your playlist. Thanks for sharing 🙏
@@JakeBroe I actually have one. What books helped you the most with understanding stock market and all the different trading strategies? I also want to invest more of my time in trading next year and would really appreciate if you could share your learning methods! Thanks Jake
Hey Jake, quick question, read somewhere that wealthier individuals prefer buying options deep in the money, because theta decay is less noticeable. Do you think you can make a video on this, maybe explaining tips and tricks wealthy managers employ while trading/investing?
Hey Jian! Welcome to the channel! I currently have $26,000 in cash in my Fidelity account and another $30,000 in my checking account because I am expecting a large tax bill. But generally I don't like to hold on to a lot of cash and would rather be invested.
Jake whats your opinion on a little bit of foreign diversification? Personally I think the SNP is better but all over reddit and youtube people make the case for upwards of 30% foreign diversification
He Eric! The S&P 500 in now overweight all the large megacaps like Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, Google, Adobe, Netflix. All these companies are growing internationally and many of them are doing more business outside the United States than inside the United States. I already have plenty of international growth exposure by holding the S&P 500. And honestly, foreign companies are having a tough time competing with America's best tech companies, so I don't see the point in buying their indexes just to diversify more.
@ Jake Broe I love watching your videos. Unfortunately, I came across your channel very recently. I wish i could have done in last year. Can you make a video on how to trade bad investments such as if you are down by 60-70% what would be the good strategy to minimize losses?
Hey priyanka! Generally, there is always an opportunity cost for every position you hold. $1 is always going to be $1 and if something isn't make you money (and actually losing you money), then that is $1 not being used somewhere else that could be making you money. Taking loses (if you don't think it will recover) is just part of the game and you shouldn't be afraid to sell for a loss and redeploy the money somewhere else if the fundamentals and technicals of the company have turned on you. Welcome to the channel and I'm glad you found me!
Jake, are you planning on rolling your TSP into your IRA (Schwab)? Also, I don't think many options players 'buy' options (as you're doing) long term...we like to 'sell' more short term options. Not to say buying calls isn't good and effective...I may need to look a bit closer myself.
Hey kanegs! Yes, I plan to roll my Roth TSP in to my Roth IRA once I am able to. All I'll be doing in my IRA with that money is selling monthly covered calls on SPY. As for my ordinary brokerage account, yes, I am going to continue buying long calls at the money.
Hey Gilbert! I recommend SPY since way more people buy and sell the contracts. The bid-ask spread is always very narrow, which is good for getting the best price.
Thanks Andriy! Currently I think financials are lagging and benefit the most from interest rates going up. I also just in general thing the mega cap tech stocks will continue dominating as their growth internationally continues. Nobody can compete with them and I don't see regulators stopping them anytime soon.
Hey Sinan! Not at this time. I make videos on my public channel for all the trades I do in my Schwab account. In my Robinhood account, I will start making videos weekly about faster paced trading. Stay tuned!
Thanks Lan! I actually have not been able to find a good book that explains options trading. I recommend just watching my playlist to learn more! th-cam.com/play/PLscTZuOqKWIxSZzy4ObKWDznEsCot_1HU.html
Jake your doing a great thing for all investors, keep up the detailed work. I really like how you explain to execute the trade on Schwab, selling covered calls and the cash secured puts Quick question? What was your logic in buying the SPY and not the SCHX? Thank you Happy New Years……Cheers!!!!
Hey Brian! I buy SPY because it is the most options traded ETF/Stock in the world. If you want in or out of contracts, the bid/ask spread is always just $1 or $2 on monthly contracts. Unfortunately people don't trade options as much on Schwab's ETFs.
Jake -- if your IRA strategy is to sell covered calls on SPY, why not just invest in XYLD and let them do the work? Can you beat XYLD by more than their 60 basis point fee?
I’ve listened to many other utubers and you’re the only one I can understand and relate to, thanks for all the videos… unfortunately the market is sucking. Since I’ve started investigating one year ago, I seriously don’t know what to do now. Do I pull out my 200k before I lose any more and just chill till the market straightens out or put the money somewhere else… I’m 62 and doing all my own investing.
Hey Jake! SWPPX is great if you have an account with Schwab and just want to auto buy a mutual fund. I personally like ETFs more than Mutual Funds and you can buy Vanguard's VOO for free with any brokerage account. Check out this video to learn more: th-cam.com/video/GJkoAz7BYmU/w-d-xo.html
Hey Jake, great video as always! I was wondering if you would make a video detailing the strategy you mentioned in this video regarding contracts on SPY in order to increase your cash flow or total asset growth. I'm also in the Air Force and have a family so investing is a bit tight, I invest regularly and enough to be able to buy put/call contracts on SPY and I would really like to increase my cash flow so I can reinvest more heavily. Thanks again for all your great content and best of luck!
Love your content. You inspired me to open a Schwab account for all my banking and investing needs this week (CMA + credit/debit, Roth IRA, and brokerage). I'm excited to follow your progress and try some of the same strategies. Can you do a video on VOOG vs. VOO? I'm considering a 100% VOOG buy and hold and would love your thoughts.
Thanks Evan! VOOG is just heavier on the mega cap tech and consumer stocks. If the market stay green, you'll have a bigger return. If the market downturns, then expect a larger swing down. We'll see!
Jake, great video. What's your input on choosing between holding SWPPX or VOO in my Schwab Roth IRA? I don't buy or sell options. I know SWPPX has a lower expense ratio (.02%) compared to VOO's .03%, but I like the fact that VOO pays dividends 4 times a year and SWPPX only pays once a year, but SWPPX has a slightly higher dividend yield. Also, VOO has an ever so slightly better tax cost ratio. What would you choose and why? I appreciate your thoughts.
Hey Jeannette! SWPPX is a mutual fund you buy directly from Schwab. It's only advantage really is you can auto deduct from a checking or savings every month and buy more shares of the fund. But in every other respect, I think ETFs are superior, so I would just advice to buy and hold VOO and reinvest dividends. It really is the best ETF out there in my opinion.
@@JakeBroe Thanks, Jake! I really appreciate it. I highly value the knowledge you share on your channel. I haven't done anything with options yet, but I'm going to check out your series on that. I hope Schwab allows for partial shares of ETF's soon. I opened a Fidelity brokerage account for the sole purpose of buying fractional shares of VTI. Happy New Year!
You can get $1000 worth of premium on $20,000 of stock that costs $5/share. Why would you tie up that much capital in SPY to earn the exact same amount?? Option premiums do not scale with the cost of the underlying, so it's most optimal to find the lowest cost underlying with the highest Delta, not the highest cost underlying. I think you might want to consider a different strategy or explain this one better...
Hey Peter. You are correct that $1 is worth $1 when it comes to options contracts whether the underlying is $5 or $500. But how much premium you can get for a Delta of .30 on a sold covered call on a single contract is not the same thing. Selling a contract for $5 above a stock that is only $5 means the stock has to go up 100% to be assigned. Where a $5 different on SPY would only be 1%. Share price is irrelevant when factoring the probability of being assigned which ultimately is what is determining option premium.
@@JakeBroe If the yield amount is the same and the Delta is the same but the Yield % is .005% on the more expensive share vs 5% on the cheaper share, of capital invested on the underlying, then I fail to see the value of selling calls on the more expensive underlying just to buy a lower chance of being assigned. Being assigned is still profitable and for the cheaper share the tax event is smaller. Again it may be worth you explaining the strategy in a video better because it's definitely not obvious why you'd want to do this. 🤷♂️ Not saying it's wrong. Just saying it currently doesn't make any sense.
Hey Lorena! If you plan to buy that house and own it for a long time, then yes, there is an argument to stop renting and buy as soon as you can. As soon as you buy your start building equity from the mortgage payments and you get the appreciated value of the house over time.
All depends Kevin! If all you want to do is buy and hold the S&P 500, then the TSP is the perfect place to keep your money. But if you want more control over your funds and pick different ETFs or individual stocks, then you can roll the money to a traditional IRA or Roth IRA and have more control.

Thanks Jake.
I, myself, am a Retired LTC with very little financial knowledge but your videos are inspiring and encouraging.
Thanks so much Robert! I'm glad to have you with the channel. Let me know if you ever have questions!
Great info jake found you through the EM guys. My son and I have subscribed and look forward to learning more. Thank You for serving our military
Above all, I salute you for you service Jake. And thank you for putting out these great videos in very simple terms for a novice like me to understand.
Thanks Syed! I appreciate that!
Jake, Thank you for your time and effort and your honesty. 👏 I've been watching you and learning from you. I'm very impressed.. such a young age and you are already doing so well with your finances 👍👏
Thanks Victoria! I appreciate the support! Happy New Years!
great video Jake. You inspired me to make my own video on my 2022 investment strategy. Including putting some of my capital into real estate rentals as well as having a more set it and forget it approach in order to reduce anxiety and stress when investing. Have a great 2022.
Thanks Jay! I checked out your channel! You are off to a solid start. Best of luck in 2022!
@@JakeBroe Thanks Jake much appreciated. Have a great new year
Congratulations Jake for your success in 2021. Wish you 2022 will be much more profitable year.
Thanks Devi! I wish you the best in 2022 as well!
Good for you! Getting your debt down and safely investing is a great play. Thank you for your service.
Thanks for your support Aristocrit! Cheers!
Amazing Jake, thanks for the video. Up until 5 months ago I did not know what Roth IRA is because I was busy working all day. You give me hope.
That's awesome Marla! We all have to start somewhere! Things start moving pretty fast if you just stick with it. Try to learn something new a little bit every day!
Wow...
You're making 💰, I'm getting killed in the NAS!
I'll go watch your past videos, thank you for sharing.
I love the way you teach, keep doing it!!!
Congratulations on your multiple achievements, Jake. Really impressed how savvy and mature you are as an investor (and knowledgable on many things). As a new investor, I really enjoyed your options series and learned a lot from them. Looking forward to learning more in 2022 and best wishes on your move to Vegas ...
Thanks xiaobiao! I'm actually in Vegas right now and signed for a place. Super excited to get setup here and being doing TH-cam full time in 2022! Cheers!
Been listening to your channel the past few months and still learning lots. Really like your video's because they aren't speculative and no BS. Look forward to learning more about trading options and would like to thank you for informative series on options. I still have a lot to learn and more money to make. Thanks so much for the information and help!!
Thanks Steven! Glad to have you with the channel and hopefully I can keep providing you value with my new videos in 2022! Cheers!
Check out my video on this trade here:

I am a new subscriber. I am in my fifty plus yo but it isn’t too late to learn about various investment options. Someone on a TSP Facebook group mentioned your TH-cam channel.
Welcome to the channel QF! Great to have you with us! Yes, I am in that TSP Facebook group and post my content there sometimes. Cheers!
Its been a journey seeing you grow the last couple of years. I'm excited to continue seeing your future content.
Thanks RyaZila! I appreciate the continued support!
For sure! It's just a start. I need to keep saving and contributing to both my retirement accounts and my taxable brokerage accounts. Cheers Robert!
Great video. Glad you're doing well and looking forward to a great 2022.
We'll see if the market continues on the roaring uptrend as the fed starts paring back.
I'm predicting a roughly flat year! But who knows! I hope you have a great 2022 Nick! Cheers!
Great Video Jake! Super proud of what you've done with finances and educating all of us in such a short time.
Thanks so much Jordan! From what I recall, you guys are doing pretty well for yourself as well. Hope all is well with you guys!
Once I do that I can do anything I want for the rest of my life. And if I want to get a day job... then I can do that, haha. But those paychecks will be a formality for working a job I just want to work. Cheers!
Be careful out there tonight. The snow storm is coming through! I'm in Sheyenne, ND for Christmas and it's bad out there.

Thank you Jake for all your advice! Happy New Year 2022!
Happy New Years nenarican! Cheers!

Cheers TNB!

Thanks for your support Tagum! Cheers!
Happy New Year Jake and continued success in 2022.

I as well! 2022 should be a good one for me! Cheers Marlon!
I am new and learning. This was both informative and inspiring.
Thanks for watching Philippa! You found my channel so that is a great start! Let me know if you have any questions.
👏👏👏 Jake you're my hero bro!! Financially and I thank you for your service
Thanks for your support Juan! I greatly appreciate it!
As for my ordinary brokerage account, yes, I am going to continue buying long calls at the money.
cash puts? SPY vs. VOO? What are the advantagesof SPY?
Hey Gilbert! I recommend SPY since way more people buy and sell the contracts. The bid-ask spread is always very narrow, which is good for getting the best price.
Hey Jake! Great videos. Any thoughts on loosers/gainers sectors when FED rasies interest rates?
Thanks Andriy! Currently I think financials are lagging and benefit the most from interest rates going up. I also just in general thing the mega cap tech stocks will continue dominating as their growth internationally continues. Nobody can compete with them and I don't see regulators stopping them anytime soon.
my goal is to retire at 45 this is awesome thanks Jake
Awesome goal Crystal! You can definitely do it!
Great work as always … do you have a paid channel for you option recommendations?
Hey Sinan! Not at this time. I make videos on my public channel for all the trades I do in my Schwab account. In my Robinhood account, I will start making videos weekly about faster paced trading. Stay tuned!
Congrats on your success in investment. I would like your recommendation of a book I can use to study option trading if you using one.
Thanks Lan! I actually have not been able to find a good book that explains options trading. I recommend just watching my playlist to learn more!

Jake your doing a great thing for all investors, keep up the detailed work. I really like how you explain to execute the trade on Schwab, selling covered calls and the cash secured puts
Quick question? What was your logic in buying the SPY and not the SCHX? Thank you Happy New Years……Cheers!!!!
Hey Brian! I buy SPY because it is the most options traded ETF/Stock in the world. If you want in or out of contracts, the bid/ask spread is always just $1 or $2 on monthly contracts. Unfortunately people don't trade options as much on Schwab's ETFs.
Great vid jake!!! Keep the good work…🙏👏👏
Thanks Alfredo! I appreciate that!
Thank you Jake!
You are very welcome Nick! Cheers!
Jake! I'm stuck, do I invest all ETFs and high dividend yields in my Roth? Or ETFs in Roth and max out per year and high yields in brokerage?
Hi, in Fidelity how you can sell CSP with margin ? is that level 3 ? Thanks.
Hey Thanh! I think Level 2 is good enough, but I would just go for 3!
@@JakeBroe , with Fidelity level 2, I can't do that. I wish you add whiteboard on your video, help us better.
Jake -- if your IRA strategy is to sell covered calls on SPY, why not just invest in XYLD and let them do the work? Can you beat XYLD by more than their 60 basis point fee?
Hey Jake can you explain more in details how to retire in selling covered calls? Congratulations in your investment thesis! Thanks!
Hey Richard! Yes, I will make a more detailed video explaining that soon. Lots of comments about it. Cheers!
Great words at the end.
Thanks Finn! Cheers!
Thanks for sharing that was excellent !
Thanks James! You are very welcome!
Thoughts on Schwab swppx?
Hey Jake! SWPPX is great if you have an account with Schwab and just want to auto buy a mutual fund. I personally like ETFs more than Mutual Funds and you can buy Vanguard's VOO for free with any brokerage account. Check out this video to learn more:
th-cam.com/video/GJkoAz7BYmU/w-d-xo.html
Hey Jake, great video as always! I was wondering if you would make a video detailing the strategy you mentioned in this video regarding contracts on SPY in order to increase your cash flow or total asset growth. I'm also in the Air Force and have a family so investing is a bit tight, I invest regularly and enough to be able to buy put/call contracts on SPY and I would really like to increase my cash flow so I can reinvest more heavily. Thanks again for all your great content and best of luck!
Hey O O! Yep, lots of people asking for that video, so I will definitely go in to more detail on what I am planning. Cheers!
We'll see!
@@JakeBroe Thank you! Best of luck in 2022!
Thank you again for your videos. In Finland we also live in a strange new reality now.
Jake, I re-watched this video and wondered what you thought about the S&P 500 index EFT SPLG? It’s a cheaper version of your SPY…
Thanks Jake Happy New Year
Happy New Years Ronald!
Question: I rent. Should I save all my money for a downpayment and after owning a house start investing?
Hey Lorena! If you plan to buy that house and own it for a long time, then yes, there is an argument to stop renting and buy as soon as you can. As soon as you buy your start building equity from the mortgage payments and you get the appreciated value of the house over time.
Is it better to leave TSP as it is after leaving or transfer to another account?
All depends Kevin! If all you want to do is buy and hold the S&P 500, then the TSP is the perfect place to keep your money. But if you want more control over your funds and pick different ETFs or individual stocks, then you can roll the money to a traditional IRA or Roth IRA and have more control.
Great content, love all the videos, keep'm coming
Thanks kenny fox! More videos coming soon for sure!
