Question: Isn't Algeria, a BRICS-member, friendly enough to russia to have them for a short and 'temporary' naval visit? I've understood that Algeria has been buying russian weapons with big money for years so they should be on good terms, right? And Algeria is not on good terms with NATO-backed Morocco so their both foreign policy aligns well...
Naturally there are more issues like the russian effect (or lack of it in Syria), religious differences etc. but was thinking why doesn't russia start concentrating there?

The Ottomans did not control Egypt until 19 years after Vasco da Gama found the new path to India.
      He reached India in 1498.
The Ottoman empire did not conquer the Mamluk empire until 1517.
The Ottoman empire would reach its peak the following 50 decades.
The Ottoman empire would remain strong long after that.
Though it would start to decline around the start of the 19th century.
A greater threat was the industrialization and globalization of empires.
The days of muslim monopoly on trade with the east was before the ottoman empire really came to be a part of it.

Food is one of the few things Ukraine can't run out of. Not only are they one of the biggest grain exporters in the world and there's not much Russia can do about that anymore but the EU can also easily supply Ukraine with basic resources like food in lagrge quantitys. This is not high tech stuff or things that need time to produce. This is something the EU has massive over capacitys of. Need to feed 40 Million people for a year? No problem. Here you go.

Mash reported that both vessels were converted some time in the 1990s from regular oil tankers into river-sea class vessels.[4] Volgoneft-212 was refitted in 2024, with The Guardian reporting that during this refit "the centre was cut out and the stern and bow were welded together, forming a huge seam in the middle. It is this section that appears to have broken."

All that aside, I want to thank you for the good bits you place at the end of your videos. This is about the tenth time you've brought a tear to my eye.
Just the simple act of a mother hugging her child should be commonplace. But not that mother, or that child. Makes me want to say all kinda of bad words to describe this foolish, wasteful destruction by banal, evil men, far from this mother protecting her child.

Maybe it's rather pathetic to admit to it, but when I get the *ding* indicating a new Jake Broe video, esp. if I can catch the live chat, that gives me one of the greatest joys of my entire week other than a weekly Zoom call with a bestie serving right now (and I'm not joking or being facetious either!). I'm disabled with a busted up spine since 2015, more bedridden than not that whole.
Besides getting info that I can always count on being researched and with good commentary and analysis, it's become sort of a one-way social outlet for me. Maybe it's not so pathetic... maybe it's just called an immense gratitude for work well-done. Thank you, sir.

I love the humanist approach rather than the all too common political approach that so many others have. The world is becoming 1 big neighborhood, and we need to make sure the people in it are being treated with respect as we want to be treated. So no, imho, that ding makes my day as well.

@@frankwebster9110 Thank you so much for taking that time for your very thoughtful response, Frank; you articulated very well why Jake's videos especially are touching.
He seems just genuinely motivated like so many of us, a simple by a hatred of fascism and a love of all humanity... it really feels that simple, and it's a unifying thing, a sensation... words are failing me, but that same feeling shared I betcha by many, many viewers.
I felt kind of nervous admitting to how much it means to me, that it was sort of opening myself up to ridicule perhaps even, but on days like this when I can't walk & I'm stuck in bed all day especially (and that isn't shared to fish for sympathy; every day above ground is a good day in my estimation), it does mean so very, very much to me.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one for whom it's a true highlight and a pick-me-up for their day as well, such as you! Cheers, m8!

Dear Aim for my Head Please, Quite frankly I actually love Jake deeply now these years later for the pure reason that I so appreciate tangible factual information while it is too often in short supply and this is Jake's forte. The best reason I can find to explain actually feeling this love for Jake (complete stranger personally) may be because he is so very careful to give us all a burst of hope/joy/goodness in every post (likely too often detrimental to his own health). I'm buggered as you and you are likely already aware of this friend of his channel, but Vlad Vexler (3 channels) is a great source of inspiration, joy factually all while being disabled with a vile physical disease. Vlad's philosophical political bent has given me much more strength to live better while physically useless to anyone else's benefit. Sometimes there is only seven minutes he can give speaking to us all the way up to a couple hours. Maybe he can be another source of joy almost daily for you. I do so hope. Hold tight to the good moments so you can hardscrabble always through the ugly ones. Best to you, Linfy My apology for being so very personal.

Jake the bigger problem is that pretty much all base load powerplants be it oil, coal, nuclear cannot ramp up or down electricity quickly. That is why it was famous for the UK energy grid to watch popular tv shows to know when the commercials go on to get ready for their pump storage hydropower stations to turn on because people will use the bathroom, cook something in the microwave etc. So if they take the grid down Ukraine would have to power down the nuclear power plants to idle or near idle as we cannot right now store the power. You need to have a near 1:1 electric production and use to keep the grid stable. The 2003 blackout in the northeast US was caused by an imbalance that forced all the power plants to scram and go offline and thus taking out most of the northeast with it.

So I hope the transmission ties between the Ukrainian and Polish grids have been maintained and added to in order to increase flexibility as to where available power can go. Swaps can be helpful both ways under these circumstances. California municipal utilities do these kinds of swaps with the Bonneville Power Administration.
