2:49 Hi Mike, I believe you meant it the other way around: one notices immediately how much longer the lugs seem on the *54* [not the 58, where the lugs are shorter with a more drastic drop]. This is the reason why the 54 has a relatively large presence despite its ostensibly smaller size at 37 mm. To clarify the case + the longer lugs make for a larger presence on the wrist, with a lug to lug distance only a hair shorter than the larger dialled 58. Having said that, absolutely great review. Detailed and yet entertaining. Liked. Subscribed.
You are entirely correct. Well spotted. I have to admit that I was terrified of uploading this video. Because I was alternating between talking about the BB54, BB58 and the BB plus also juggling images of the 79000, the 79030 and the 79230 and knew I was going to risk dumping a 79030 picture where a 79000 picture should be and so on. Juggling so visually similar watches with similar naming conventions was a bit of a nightmare. I even think in the video I also call it the BB 94 and the BB4 a couple of times. 😂😀 But yes. You are totally right. The BB54 lugs are the ones that feel longer and are what give it that presence. Thanks for sharing and subscribing. It's really appreciated. 😀
A really interesting analysis. The 54 IS a watch from the past. The 58 just looks like it’s trying to be a watch from the past. Great channel, with insightful, thought provoking commentary.
As a big fan of ID Guy, that's a huge compliment. He does really good stuff. I especially enjoy his design / engineering take on stuff. He notices things that I just don't. Thanks a ton for the praise and taking the time to comment. IT's really appreciated. 😀😀😀
Fantastic video. I just sold my pelagos for the 54. I also own a Rolex DJ 36, zenith chronomaster moon phase 38, a Hamilton khaki field mechanical 36 and the khaki aviation pilot pioneer (36mm) and an explorer2 42mm. You can tell I prefer smaller watches. Wasn’t always that way. But lately less is far more. Great perspective on the video. 👏🏻
This was seriously a joy to watch. Your ability to analyze, discuss and articulate is mindblowing. I really got educated, and I loved it. Thank you so much. So why am I here? Because I went to an AD some months ago and experienced the BB54 magic. It looks small when you hold it in your hand, but on the wrist it just... somehow... grows. It's like an optical illusion. And to be honest it felt quite like when Harry Potter is in the wand store, where his wand chooses him. The BB54 chose me.
Hadn't even considered this watch until I saw this video. Always thought a 37mm diver would wear too small, despite daily driving a Spirit 37. Tried it at the AD today and immediately fell in love and walked out with it. Thanks for covering this!!
Just bought BB54 from the Tudor boutique in Tokyo. For a new buyer of Tudor/Rolex watch, the Oyster like bracelet is extremely comfortable on the wrist, hope to purchase a Rolex as well in the future. I have nothing negative to say about the design, it’s a perfect vintage inspired piece. I love your Sean Connery and Marty Mcfly analyze.
Am a proud owner of the BB54 on rubber strap wow what a beautifully designed vintage timepiece by tudor! Its the new king of the black bays imo, i have large small and medium watch sizes in my collection from the gwg 1000 mudmaster to the 36mm seiko 5 champagne dial fiegler but i must say am warming to the small size watches in my collection atm the BB54 and my 1977 omega triple gold seamaster tv dial 36mm are getting alot of wrist time recently i love small timepieces atm 😊
I recently got this watch and after wearing it for a while I fully agree with your thoughts. People who are not into watches asked me is this a vintage watch? This watch is a brand new watch made with new technology but looking like a vintage watch. The bezel not being gilt the lollipop second hand makes it so much cooler actually. The size makes it so vintage while the bracelet makes it so modern it is a time travel back and forth. It is a very nice and fun watch to wear
There is a good discussion to be had about sizing. I recently got into 50’s American watches, and they’re all around 30mm. That was what my grandfather wore, and he was a 6’2 225lb boxer. The insistence on size is often justified in specs, but you can still make a movement accurate and a case waterproof with a 30 or 32mm case (Rolex does it on several models). In my eyes, it comes down to how it is worn - lug lengths and bracelets. These American watches were shipped on really odd (to modern eyes) JB Champion expanding bracelets that fill the wrist with eg an enameled plate before it gets to the expanding links. Equally, Nomos watches are “small” in diameter, but long in lugs, to accomplish the same goal.
Upon reflection from 3 months ownership, I could bore someone to insanity with how much I love this watch, on its own merit and in comparison to the BB58 and the Submariner(s).
To me the BB58 looks surprisingly modern. It would go well, while riding a Kawasaki Ninja or Ducati Panigale. Meanwhile, the BB54 looks like old stock from the 50s or 60s Tudor forgot about and decided to sell it 70 years later with a new movement and clasp.
Fair perspective. I think we’re basically in agreement about the core design ethisof the 54 - How we feel about it is different though 😀 Thanks for contributing 👍😀
Fantastic and a smashing presentation on the difference between the new trying to look old and the old looking new. Great powers of observation and synthesis of ideas.
Time traveling to the Connery’s Bond’s beginnings, I don’t think anyone will notice that my 58 has a slightly larger bezel, thicker mid-case, and less bulbus crystal than that on the 6538 or 7922. especially with Ms. Andress about in a bikini. Me thinks those who wore these watches in the late 50’s, early 60’s were far too pre-occupied with their lives (or their missions) to be concerned with the minute differences from model to model; they worked with what they got and accomplished a lot more with it (or despite it). Enjoyed your review of the new, old stock 54.
You're totally right - Watch nerding is a relatively new thing in the grander scheme of things. Back in the 60s it likely was to a diver what a hammer is to a carpenter. A tool 😃😃😃
Great analogy and analysis. I'd always admired & preferred Connery as Bond. Well done on your research & knowledge putting together these thoughtful video presentations. After much self debate on whether or not I liked it, having tried it on 2 days after launch. Then afterwards reading & watching so much positive commentary about this release, I went back to an AD to take another look. I put it on the wrist and momentarily changed my mind. My conclusion is that it does look petite when displayed out on the table, especially next to other dive watches. However, it's not too small once on the wrist. The sales assistant then offered it to me to purchase but I declined. As I already own the 58 I don't think it wise to buy another BB in the same colour scheme. If I didn't already own the 58 I would have bought it in a flash. But then again, not sure if the fashion of smaller wristwatch trend is enduring. Being a conservative 40mm sports watch wearer, I'll need a lot of convincing. Perhaps I'll wait until the next iterations which will be Metas certified. I've learned from my past mistakes not to be too hasty buying Tudor Black Bays, as I bought the BB41 when it first launched in 2012, then I sold it to buy the BB58. I also bought the Pelagos 42 and regretted it once the 39 was announced. I don't want to keep 'upgrading', so I think I'll wait until a refined model is launched. It's terrible that watches are like mobile phones. Have to keep upgrading each year! This is an expensive hobby indeed.
You raise a very good point. Tudor is becoming a little like Rolex making minor updates every now and again - overall improving the watch, where people will ask - Is it worth the upgrade? Good question.... Personally it will come down to the specific aesthetic of the new watch. Do I like it (significantly) more. If not. Then the old tech is good enough for me. 👍
For your consideration, the BB54 has a better bracelet, but you are forgoing a lot. I feel 39 mm to be the perfect size for a sport/dive watch. Also, I love BB58’s gilt bezel numerals, red iconic triangle (red triangle and larger crown references the classic Rolex Big Crown of the past) and the snowflake seconds. I even like the coin edge bezel matching the crown. Without these characteristics the BB would be rather dull. Now all these charming characteristics have been removed from the BB54. The lugs on the BB54 are also proportionally bigger giving it a less elegant, squared look. Newer is not always better.
Great comparison, the BB54 wear like a true vintage watch polished up with modern materials it's a great piece. I fooled a few people who agreed it's a nice vintage watch.
Hey watch family. Had the BB54 on the wrist today. OMG it is awesome i could pull it off on my 7 inch wrist and the rivets are tiny great job on that. Having a BB58 i like the warmth of the dial and my red triangle which makes it a strap monster and i love a little bigger on divers. If you are looking for a diver both are a must try on they are both amazing and you will know which you prefer when on your wrist. As a side note put on the 36 mm black bay with the blue dial and jubilee bracelet. Big mistake because i now need to sell half my watches to make room for this.
Terrific review and very informative, as always, Mike. Like your play on the Bond (Connery) motif. I keep coming back to the Tudor Black Bay 54 for my retirement watch. ⌚
Love my BB58 it is sweet spot for me as a diver and lives on a nice leather strap. Will drop in to my AD to see the new watches. I think i might go for a smaller black bay blue dial on a jubilee for my dress watch at some stage.
I saw the watch a couple of months ago when a friend of mine was buying it for his gf. I was really overwhelmed by the watch but did not consider it for myself (rather being the 42mm guy) .. but your vid got me thinking and now I've initiated the purchase. 🙈😆👌
Love the BB54 becuase of the comfort and vintage vibe but can also be part of the 3 watch classic collection...Explorer 36, Cartier Santos (Medium) and BB54....
The version you mentioned isn't the first METAS certified movement / watch from Tudor, it the BB Ceramic. Tudor's spokesperson quoted this incorrectly in an interview too. PS good content, keep it up :)
I was not aware of that. Took them two years to get METAS into another model... Thanks for clarifying. Really appreciated. And thanks for watching as well 😀👍
I get the hype & i was very tempted. What struck me was how retro it looked. I didn't buy it however as it was just too popular for my liking. Purchased a Seiko SLA instead which was limited to 600 pieces.
The BB54 is vintage done right. My problem with Tudor is they never inventory of new popular models until maybe a year later and by then I’ve moved on 😎. Another great review. Best regards
@@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch I called my Rolex/Tudor AD the day that the Pelagos 39 came out and still no call. I have good purchase history and at this point I’m looking at other brands. I can’t play the stupid games anymore.
Understand everything you say. Both are great watches. I feel that after the initial hype surrounding the 54 has faded the 58 will still be the bigger seller. Both great though, good on ya Tudor.
An alternative view to the herd mentality love for the BB54. Yes, the BB54 has a better bracelet, but you are forgoing a lot.
Execellent points!!!! Like I said - some will direct fair criticism at this watch for being more simple and broadly appealing - the red triangle, the gilt, the longer crown stem. All gone. More broad appeal, potentially less personality…. 👍😀
Old Watch New Vibe - 54 and the 6MAS SJE093. Both killer watches. I think this is a short term recipe for success for watch companies with enough heritage and gravitas.
Cool review! But when (and why..:( ) a vintage Rolex/Tudor submariner had golden hands? A darker brown shaded BB54 hands with a similar finish to the one seen in BB Pro model, would be a perfect match (in my eyes of course). A great release overall though
I know very little about those old watches. As far as I know, I'm pretty sure it's a paint/lacquer. My guess is it was an afforable way to get that gold look onto the dial and hands. But I'm not an expert on those old watches.... Glad you enjoyed the video. 😀👍
Great video. I wonder your take on the AP Coverage Service. I get the insurance part of it but what is the long term plan? Are they worried about long term demand, or just making so much money that they don’t care 😂
Good question. My guess is, I think it's there for repeat business and building customer loyalty. If you can walk into an AP point of sale and walk out with a Royal Oak, chances are you're already throwing some serious cash at that store. Two year coverage says "we value you" in a wild way. It is quite a wild offering though...
I love the 54 I need to wear it more! I have a few watches and because you can only wear one at a time I loan them to friends. I was my friend that has my Kermit yesterday, I thought that watch was normal small, but it really is not.
Funny how no one really thinks the Explorer isn’t a manly watch at an advertised 36mm, and in reality it’s 35.4mm. Yet a 37mm dive watch is called a woman's watch. People get some strange, and inconsistent subjective opinions. And lug to lug the 54 is actually longer than the Pelagos 39 (not by much though) so wears much larger than the Explorer, especially when you wear the Explorer on a strap.
This watch shouldn't work on my wrist, which is a little larger than yours. But the revelation for me is that it does, and that puzzled me. So I compared this with the BB58 and a couple other dive watchs and I found something: On the bezel of the BB54, because the markings are silver rather than gilt, they cannot escape notice. Whereas on the BB58, and like my rose gold bezel Norqain, the markings can sort of blend in to the surroundings, and almost visually disappear. Getting back the BB54, the 5, 15, 25, 35, 45, and 55 minute block markings are larger, which I think makes the bezel and dial marry with each other in a way that the BB58 doesn't. In essence, the BB54 bezel extends the dial, especially at 3 and 9, where bezel markings and dial indices have the same thickness. I measure the crystal (or dial) width at 28.5mm, which is below my personal 30mm threshold. It shouldn't work, if taken on its own. That would be an effeminate size against my wrist, but the bezel is solving that problem. The other thing that makes this BB54 more compatible is the 20mm lug width. Usually a balanced-looking watch has a lug width of around half the case width. But on the BB54 it is a little larger at 20mm in the case, but the next link is 19mm, and then 17.5mm, and finally 16mm which runs down to an 18mm clasp. And personally, I wouldn't want to go any lower than 16mm on the bracelet width before it looks too "dainty" for me. Tudor is making something universal and compatible for all genders. As for the smaller Nomos, well, what I just said about crystal or dial width is your answer. The Nomos is near bezel-less, all dial.
Correct. It completely slipped my mind. 🤦♂️ In my defence, a Tudor rep at watches and wonders was caught making the same mistake, so there’s that…. 😀😀😀
He he. Thanks a ton - glad you’ve chosen to be a part of the community 👍😀😀😀 I have opinions about everything, except what other people should do with their stuff and their money. You just got to figure out what feels right for you 👍😀
@@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch; @jermainewilliams3038 - Did just that. always wanted a non-gilt bezel. The 54 offers a lot of subtle refinements which I found worth the upgrade. Unlike me, I do however suggest if you can wait few months or so as the differential is a bit painful @ $1,000 +/-
In essence yes. Id guy releases a video today where he says “I am a big fan of 1-1 recreations of original designs”. If that isn’t NOS, not sure what is. I thinks it’s a fantastic watch but it is very close to its’ original inspiration…
you nailed it! an old watch that looks new... that's what many people want but F the fake rivets and F the domed cristal and I'm won!! wait that that would be the omega 2254.50.00 (original to the core, still available at a great price) Sean Connery would agree and F mcfly
Poky little thing. Nice watch on its own terms but I couldn't believe just how small when I went to look at it. Fine, it's nice the skinny guys get some nice watches after us larger blokes having such a great run the last 10-15 years. But really - it's not a mass market watch. A year on they are coming up all too regularly on watch forums - regretful normal-sized purchasers realising that the new small watch fashion suits them as much as a pair of 1970s flares. I have seen it on larger blokes and it looks a bit silly, just as a Panerai looks ridiculous on small skinny blokes. Its boosters - like this video - are going to regret their fanboy witterings on this one.
Tom you seems not to understand the difference between being ripped and overweight diabetes slob like yourself. I bet there is no difference is it 37 or 42 mm on your hoof type of a wrist everything looks weird and bad
That is correct. When filming I choose not to flash any of my own watches. I have (check out my bb gmt video) and will have videos where I showcase some of my watches directly but I have made an active choice to not have my own collection be the center of attention. 👍😀

Wow! 😀Thanks - really appreciate the feedback 😀😀
And thanks for watching as well 😀👍
Amazing review. Pertinent, poetic and well executed
Thanks - kind words 😀
I get the hype & i was very tempted. What struck me was how retro it looked. I didn't buy it however as it was just too popular for my liking. Purchased a Seiko SLA instead which was limited to 600 pieces.
The BB54 is vintage done right. My problem with Tudor is they never inventory of new popular models until maybe a year later and by then I’ve moved on 😎. Another great review. Best regards
Yup. Sold out from day one. Still can’t get a Pelagos 39 without a waiting list. It’s ridiculous frankly.
🤦♂️👍
@@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch I called my Rolex/Tudor AD the day that the Pelagos 39 came out and still no call. I have good purchase history and at this point I’m looking at other brands. I can’t play the stupid games anymore.
Understand everything you say. Both are great watches. I feel that after the initial hype surrounding the 54 has faded the 58 will still be the bigger seller. Both great though, good on ya Tudor.
Agree 100%
Ditto from here 😀
great review - love the analogy used! I'm dying to try the 54 on.
In stores now! (Sold out of course.........) 🤦♂️👍😀
@@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch and therin lies the rub...
An alternative view to the herd mentality love for the BB54. Yes, the BB54 has a better bracelet, but you are forgoing a lot.
Execellent points!!!!
Like I said - some will direct fair criticism at this watch for being more simple and broadly appealing - the red triangle, the gilt, the longer crown stem. All gone.
More broad appeal, potentially less personality….
👍😀
Every single point you make is entirely subjective.
I wonder how would you analyze the BB41 Burgundy..as in now, it’s my first and only luxury watch that serve as GADA watch
Old Watch New Vibe - 54 and the 6MAS SJE093. Both killer watches. I think this is a short term recipe for success for watch companies with enough heritage and gravitas.
Excellent review and insights! Now a subscriber. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Awesome, thank you - Really appreciated 👍👍👍
And lug to lug the 54 is actually longer than the Pelagos 39 (not by much though) so wears much larger than the Explorer, especially when you wear the Explorer on a strap.
this is the END GAME watch....period.
It IS pretty darned good 😀
This watch shouldn't work on my wrist, which is a little larger than yours.
Size and fit is just so infinitely subjective at the end of the day. And as you point out it's not just the proportions that play a role 😃
Even better with a tropic strap.
Yes the bb54 is true vintage with the only exception being the semi sunburst dial
Agree. The sunburst is really subtle though, but it is there.....😀
Even tho I know it has a subtle sunburst, I rarely see it. To me it looks mostly matte with (in some lights) a subtle almost dark chocolate colour.
First metas certified movement was in Tudors black ceramic BB about two (?) years ago
Correct. It completely slipped my mind. 🤦♂️
In my defence, a Tudor rep at watches and wonders was caught making the same mistake, so there’s that….
😀😀😀
@@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch happens to the best of us... 😀
I’m 6’2 190lb just built like Sean I’d wear this. My daily is a 36mm explorer and it fits perfectly
Bingo 😀
Hi, would you prefer yellow markers on the bezel to match the dial, or white ones?
Monocrhome for me.. but I'm boring 😀
Superb review. Thank you. Liked and subscribed. Would you recommend selling my BB58 and picking one of these up?
He he. Thanks a ton - glad you’ve chosen to be a part of the community 👍😀😀😀
I have opinions about everything, except what other people should do with their stuff and their money. You just got to figure out what feels right for you 👍😀
@@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch; @jermainewilliams3038 - Did just that. always wanted a non-gilt bezel. The 54 offers a lot of subtle refinements which I found worth the upgrade. Unlike me, I do however suggest if you can wait few months or so as the differential is a bit painful @ $1,000 +/-
So it’s designed to look like new old stock, interesting theory
In essence yes. Id guy releases a video today where he says “I am a big fan of 1-1 recreations of original designs”.
If that isn’t NOS, not sure what is. I thinks it’s a fantastic watch but it is very close to its’ original inspiration…
Has the BB54 25 or 27 jewels?
Marvelous video.
Many thanks! 😀
Awesome clip 👏
Thanks! 😊
I wish there was 0 guild on the hands... would be super clean!
I like that gilt but clean steel could definitely work as well. 😀😀
Yeah ok I knew I wanted it , now I have to get it ..
😂
I would argue that the original oris divers 65 2015 reissue (black arabic dial) is also a “new old” watch.
I would tend to agree with you. It definitely does much of the same as the 54 👍😀
Great review.
Glad you enjoyed it 😀😀
They released the METAS with the ceramic BB
Correct. It passed my mind completely. In my defence, a Tudor rep apparently made the same mistake to a journalist at the initial release🤦♂️😀
if it had a date it would be perfect
you nailed it! an old watch that looks new... that's what many people want but F the fake rivets and F the domed cristal and I'm won!! wait that that would be the omega 2254.50.00 (original to the core, still available at a great price) Sean Connery would agree and F mcfly
Glad you liked my angle on it. That omega has something as well for sure 😀
I think this is the most desirable new watch you can get for under $4k.
It's definitely up there 😊
You sold me at Sean Connery.
😊😊😊
I bet I’ve watched this video at least 10 times.
that's.... a lot 😂😂😂 Thanks 😊
The BB54 is timeless, same as the explorer 36.
That’s my thinking as well 😀😀😀
Looks like a cheap dive watch, and cheaper micro brand dive watcher are looking like quality expensive watches, though style is subjective.
Style always is.... 😀
👍️🇳🇵🕘️
THx!
to small
Have you even tried it on? Dumb comment
Wear it around your dick then
Maybe... It's all subjective at the end of the day 😀
Nö
you don't even have a watch on hands, dude ... please !
That is correct. When filming I choose not to flash any of my own watches. I have (check out my bb gmt video) and will have videos where I showcase some of my watches directly but I have made an active choice to not have my own collection be the center of attention.
👍😀
the watch hand is horrible
Not quite with you but taste is subjective - you do you 👍👍👍
Thanks for contributing 😀
