- FOX Sports’ lead college football analyst Joel Klatt discusses the latest coaching carousel moves including Ryan Day and Ohio State hiring Chip Kelly as their new Offensive Coordinator following the departure of Bill O’Brien for Boston College. He weighs in on what Kelly’s impact on the Buckeyes’ offense will be and then looks North as Michigan hired another member of the Harbaugh family coaching tree to lead the Wolverines defense in Wink Martindale. Klatt concludes the podcast by giving his thoughts on Alabama Offensive Coordinator Ryan Grubb taking the OC job with the Seattle Seahawks and considers how big of a loss it will be for Kalen DeBoer in Year 1 in Tuscaloosa. Klatt also raises some questions about the timing of the exit occurring right as the 30-day transfer window for Alabama players was closing.

A prenupdate, if you will
Completely loved the answe by Joel too!
Dude’s fiancé def shot down that idea😂😂 which is an even bigger reason to get one if you ask me
Hilarious
Someone fill me in on this??? I thought Joel was married?!
4:26 “…that you know, and that you can trust…” I thought for sure this was gonna be a Hampton by Hilton segue lol
Kelly was Day's 1st choice but it wasn't time yet to do this from Kelly's standpoint so O'Brien was picked.
I like the Frye - Kelly combination in relation to the running game. That was OSU's shortcoming last year and it affected the offense overall. UCLA ran the ball very well with Zac Charbonneau under the Frye-Kelly coaching. I'm optimistic about this situation. The defense was much improved last year and is going to be even better this year with the experience they are bringing back and a couple of nice additions.
But y’all don’t have a qb
@@AlmightyMauMau Just watch what Will Howard does with all of this elite talent around him.
I love listening to you and Gus on Saturdays in the fall. I'm a Buckeye fan, and the way you break down the games they play is awesome.
Mike Macdonald, Jesse Minter, and Wink Martindale. Michigan might as well rename their team to the Ravens at this point. John Harbaugh deserves a statue in Ann Arbor.
And the Eagles should rename themselves the Philadelphia Bulldogs while we are at it 🤣
Just need a statue of 3rd base ;)
Love the show! Please keep up the good work !!!
“It was an epic day, of college football” I love how it’s on beat with the music again. 🤣😎🕺💃
Glad I found your show
This is emerging as one of the top three sports shows. Consistently excellent insights without the theatrics

Best college football show period! Thank you Joel!
Klatt, man, been following and watching your show for quite some time. Great analysis, very concise, thorough and impartial. You speak so well and get your point across so well , BUT MAN, for someone who has such a great grasp of the English language, it is “all of a sudden”, not “all THE sudden”. I’ve wanted to say that to you for the better part of 2 years bud. You perform at such a high level with everything else, but that is a pet peeve every time I watch your show.
Joel, I think you’ve got to be the most knowledgeable, plus fair football guys in college. I love love love watching your videos and having you call my Michigan Wolverines football games. I actually live in Austin,Tx now but am originally from a suburb of Detroit and have been a Wolverines fan my whole life. For the first time in my life both the Wolverines and the Lions are both good. Being a Lions fan has been the cruelest of tasks (this includes the NFC championship game this past season, only the Lions could go from being the best team in the NFL in the first half to one of the worst teams in the NFL in the same game and the in the second half of that NFC championship) but I truly think that Detroit is going to be good, really good for a long time and for the first time in my life I actually can’t wait for the NFL to start back up as well as college football. Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you for doing such a great job and being a TV guy that I can count on to give it to me straight.. GO BLUE!! RESTORE THE ROAR!!! 8:42 am Thursday Feb. 29th
I know what you said about Chip and Day... But do you think that maybe, just maybe, Chip saw an opportunity to go and be the OC and if Ohio loses to Michigan or gets bounced in the 1st playoff game or beats Michigan then loses to them in the playoffs... As long as the offense looks good Day is probably gone... Now Chip is sitting at the prime spot to take over and has less of a headache to recruit to LA and can basically slide into a premier HC job with a BIG bump in pay
JOEL - Help! I'm going thru college football withdrawl
The Chip Kelly situation is a win-win. UCLA gets to rebuild its program with a modern coach who is not only an alumnus, but is also loved by the players. Ohio State gets their preferred OC candidate who is capable of being a head coach, but doesn’t want to be the new-era CEO coach that Ryan Day is choosing to be
I got my waffle breakfast and hot coffee at Hampton Inn and I am ready for the show 😂😊❤
You say you don’t want to speculate on whether Bama told players that OC may leave. But you are speculating.
I don’t wanna pay taxes I do because it’s my job as an American. Hope this helps
@@jasonh520actually a great example
@@jasonh520wow, no lies told here

@@TheLwaller09 I don't want to speculate, but no one knows anything - so in order to keep the show rolling and have something to talk about, I need to speculate. The tax example is perfect. not an argument at all - form ANY standpoint. Simply a clarification.
You can't start letting college kids transfer because an assistant coach leaves. I know you only mentioned this as a collective bargaining chip, but it has to stop somewhere. College kids have the freedom to choose whatever college they would like to attend. A lot of the kids are now being paid, so honor your decision. Someone coming from college to the NFL has no choice, they have to go to whatever team drafts them. If an NFL coach is fired, if they quit, whatever the case may be, that player is stuck with that team until free agency. NFL free agency is earned, it isnt automatically given to a player as soon as they walk into the door. If a player wants NIL and signs the NIL deal, they should have to stay at the school 3 years regardless of the situation. If they want to transfer year 4, after putting in 3 years, so be it. The constant movement is detrimental for the sport, and I say that as a Buckeye. Someone who's team has benefited greatly from the all of the player movement. It just isn't good for the sport.
The mobility has hurt OSU more than it has helped it in years past b/c a brand like you guys will be able to hold onto amazing talent in the wings while they wait for their turn if they can’t move. Same thing with Bama. The big brands are complaining but it’s allowed 2 new teams in the cfp for once so maybe it’s actually better for keeping things interesting
I agree with you regarding the athletes honoring their commitment/deal signing. I just think it should be 2 years verse 3.
Agreed it should be 2 year minimum at a school before transferring. 1 time transfer without an exceotiin. 1 transfer portal after spring games
NOW players are allowed ONE transfer, except if a head coach leaves, or a family burden.
Stop with the kids stuff, they are young adults. If you want to tie a player to a school via NIL money for multiple years, then you're either going to need a collective bargaining agreement or an act of Congress and that's not happening anytime soon.
Interesting on Chip going from Ucla head man to Ohio State OC? Very interesting
Lateral move at worst. UCLA about to become an after thought in the B10
If you been watching the coaching carousel. He left UCLA because being a head coach isn’t about coaching the players. It’s about recruiting, fundraising for NIL, managing transfer portal. So basically it’s like a GM for the program.. that’s why he left. At OSU they have great recruiting staff. Ryan’s reputation is why we got the players we got..I just can’t wait until September to see them Buckeyes play
I appreciate the team going back to the original intro. Just didn't feel right having the words and the beat not synced.
Same. That intro never seemed right
Joel, with all the money and effort being spent by Ohio State this year, what are the realistic expectations? Did Ryan set himself up to Win it all or Bust? What happens if they lose to Michigan again this year?
If they lose to Michigan, Ryan Day is gone.
Facts! I’ve never seen a college team team do this. They probably have the highest paid team in sports right now. If they don’t win a natty! Fire the man
@@JamesSmith-gz1zn I mean they now have Chip Kelly right there.... Feels like they have 2 head coaches now
With what ohio did in the portal and now this OC move, if Michigan wins again (in columbus) columbus is going to burn.
A loss to Michigan wouldn't be the end of the world like talking bout 12 team playoff this year. Catch that rich eisen Charles woodson interview
Wink Martindale was great on Tic-Tac-Dough
Can't wait for the 2024 CFB season!
Im not mad at Bill O'Brian. He helped Ohio State land Julian Sayin. Thanks Bill.
In actualility it was prob Ben Franklins.
You also failed to mention that UCLA is in massive debt. They would not help Kelly. Kelly's DC moved to USC across town. The admin wouldnt pay up to keep his DC. So not liking the NIL, etc, but not having admin support puts it over the top.
I don't dispute what Ryan Day feels he must do regarding Ohio State, but why does James Franklin at Penn State seem to be immune in the same situation? Is it a management problem?
As a BC fan, I think we got an upgrade. But we'll see.
You can look at the Chip Kelly hire more than one way. Ryan Day and Chip reuniting can be great cause of familiarity, it could also under achieve cause of possibly having a comfort zone and complacency. Sometimes it works out working with friends and sometimes it doesn’t work out. Another thing is Chip while great at Oregon and his 1st year with the Eagles the defenses caught up to his scheme in the nfl and and at ucla. At ucla he hasn’t been that close to his Oregon days success. With him UCLA wasn’t recruiting at even a consistent top 20 level. Now the feeling is Chip didn’t like to recruit and especially in the nil era along with ucla’s as an athletic department lack of commitment to progress with their football program. Another way to look at it is with Chip and the familiar ties with Day and Frye they can be dangerous. Chip has much more talent to work with and that can bring his mojo back. Taking 2 great offensive minds in Day and Chip and combining that to bring a hybrid of Chip’s running schemes with Day’s passing philosophy. I think that’s the case. With Will Howard being a mobile qb and not being an overtly accurate qb I think OSU will be more run oriented but still balanced. Be more unpredictable and take more chances with unorthodox plays. Howard working with Day should improve his passing ability and Howard has much more talent to work with as well. I think OSU goes 55% run to 45% pass, maybe 50-40. Regardless OSU should have at least a top 10 offense again to go along with a top 2 defense
NumBer 1 defense. If they werent on the field all that extra time due to our misfiring offense , they wouldve given up even less than the numBer 2 ranking they ended w/ showed. Now you Bringing Back stars and adding quite possiBly the Best defensive player in the ncaa. Im so grateful.
@@BurnellBrownIII I’m saying for next season if they don’t have the no 1 defense it should be at least no 2. Georgia could have the no 1 defense so that’s why I say top 2 as in no 1 or 2
OSU, Georgia, Oregon, & Texas should be the final four.
If the major college football conferences do eventually split away from the NCAA how would that impact the other sports in those conferences? I am a big college wrestling fan and hope that wouldn’t lead to more programs being cut. What do you think of growth of women’s wrestling and the NCAA stating they are looking to have a championship maybe 2026?
Chip Kelly is going to rip it in the BIg Ten with his Football offensive acumen and the talent on the field at Ohio State.
OSU is all in for this year, with Michigan somewhat rebuilding mood.
Somewhat? They lost 44 players including QB, RB, WR 1, LT, RT, C, RG, LG, Head Coach, all of the white coaches plus a couple that weren't white, DC, 8 of the starters on defense and the guy who did all of the cheating that's going to cost them the Championship that they would have won anyway. So Somewhat seems a little light to me. Just my opinion.
Please give the Jaguars Quinyon Mitchell in round 1 and Jackson Powers-Johnson in round 2.
Easy to be good at defense when you know what play is coming
How many different jobs has Chip, alias the nomad, Kelly had in the last 10 years?
College football is going wild
Thanks Saban! O-H!
Joel could you please expound on how Chip Kelly can improve the Ohio State running game. What is it about his approach/scheme that gets such good efficiency out of that part of the offense. And if you care to how that makes this offense maybe greater than it's ever been.
Online play . Chips teams block very well
@@kendallandrews8691 I knew that but curious what Joel thought about that, is he just a blocking savant himself? Because his teams do seem to do more with less.
What are your thoughts on the possibilities of the B1G & SEC ditching the NCAA to form something of an NFL style premier league?
I think the whole issue with transfer portal just needs to be opens May 15th, closes July 15th or something very close. Seems like the most ideal time for movement. Essentially call it the College free agency period. No other times during the year really makes sense considering both the football and academic schedules together. Let's not forget these are still institutions of higher learning (allegedly).
I don’t necessarily disagree with Joel’s larger point about the transfer portal and coordinators. However, in this specific case living around the program , Bama players weren’t staying or leaving because of Grubb. They barely knew him. If they stayed after Saban retired they were staying. Besides, the window opens back up a couple months from now so they can leave then.
Joel, you're a good guy, But Do Not be an Apologist for No Neck Kelly. He didn't have to get rid of top players Mora recruited. He left because he was dead man walking at Westwood. it was Margaritaville 5 O'clock in Hermosa Beach every day with his boys, Azziniro & Pellum.
Joel is one best in the game 💫💫

@@paulbegansky5650you sound crazy lmao
@gavin8164 keep your head buried, just to show you, thus happened last Thursday at 320 central
Well Mike MacDonald was hires Jan 31st. That's not for from the window closing. If you are leaving a school because of a coordinator or position coach getting a promotion, I don't know what to tell you.
If those guys hit the portal, where are they going? They can't hit their new school until the summer.
BTW coaches don't leave penalty free. There's something called a buyout. DeBoer owes Washington 12 million. Now I agree players should be employees and collectively bargain. They should get a percentage of their conference's TV deal
A LOT of players enter the portal after spring practice every year. They go to the schools that want them. THEN practice during summer practices and are ready to play in the fall. STANDARD operating procedures
For the big Bama targets in recruiting, like Ryan Williams, notice Ryan Grubb was never near his recruitment.
Players went to Bama to play for Saban, NOT Alabama
@@taxisquad11Many of them have said otherwise…
@@riku1neo Most have said they went to play for Saban only. Why do you think Downs and Sayin jumped to the portal right after the announcement? They would have signed with Ohio State originally if Saban had retired a couple of years earlier. I'll give you the kids that grew up in Alabama, but players from other states, it' won't be the same, now that Saban retired,
Why did Ryan Williams stay with his commitment to Alabama? Why did most players stay?
That's ONE. First tell us why these SIXTEEN players left when Saban retired: Isaiah Bond, Shawn Murphy, Dezz Ricks, Antonio Kite Trey Amos, Amari Niblack, Caleb Downs, Kayden Proctor, Jameer Grimsleey, Julian Sayin, Ian Jackson, Raydon Williams, Miles Kitsemn, Terrance Ferguson. Thank you in advance for your knowledge on each
Chip is a great coach !!!!
I feel like we got lucky with O’Brien leaving I’d much rather have Kelly
Can. You explain the corruption in college football with the big ten schedule with Ohio State playing only Oregon while Michigan play all USC and Oregon and UCLA and top five TEXAS, while Ohio State not playing any ranked teams
I think Chip Kelly is an upgrade over Bill O’Brien. I think Ohio State can win it all next year with the addition of Chip and the current core at OSU. They’re going to be scary.
Ohio is doing all they can to best Michigan this year. It is unheard of that head coach leaves a great program like UCLA to be an assistant at Ohio State. They have to be paying Chip Kelly a lot of money to do that.
Hey Joe, you are amazing. How bout them ducks? I know your a buff any chance you convert?

What will happen with Ryan Day if he loses again this year with all of these new 5star hires and new staff?
Depends when he loses . If he loses first round of the playoffs I’d fire him but they won’t . If he loses to Michigans he’s definitely fired unless they still go on to win the title
With the 12 team playoff a school will get in with 3 losses and sometimes 3. Winning every game is no longer important, EXCEPT to the know nothing nobody fans. Whose opioions are meaningless
@@di114n2 Day WILL NOT be fired unless he does what the last head coach at Ohio State did that was fired. Lose 10 games total his last 2 seasons. Ignorant fans are clueless what happens when a head coach is fired now, because of NIL and PortalS.
@@taxisquad11 I agree. Day is completely safe.
@stephaniechaffin1154 If michigan embarrasses them at home "AGAIN" I wouldn't be so sure.
In my uninformed view, Urban Meyer (who I Liked at OSU) I believe ran the quarterback too much. I believe Ryan Day lost a couple key games, especially against Michigan, because he refused to run the quarterback. Chip Kelly find the balance at Long last? Am I wrong about asking this question?
Why do this topic, close to a week after announced?
Better analysis requires some forethought. Joel has the most meaningful analysis, but not always the fastest. In a world of immediate gratification and mediocrity, it is well worth the price of admission.

"This player have"??
If Rayn Day doesn't improve the offensive line for next year, all of this hype about transfers and signings is likely to fall flat.
Recruits are avoiding mi dirty program
Do you think the players who jump into the transfer portal always share that information with their team? Highly doubt it. Please get off the moral high horse.
I give it to Ohio St, they recruit and hire Elite year after year!
They should be winning Titles but for some reason they just dont
The scores in college football are lopsided big time last season, because it is a game between teams who have and teams who have not and it will be worse this season and the NCAA has no control or rule’s anymore only Ohio state do whatever they want including firing other schools head coaches like Michigan and Alabama
Too many transfers out.....bunch in on lucrative NIL deals..bunch of coaching changes.....seems like too much of a change in columbus.....way too many cogs replaced in a decent machine.....
This really makes Chip Kelly look weak, and he brought in recruits just to jet to an OC job? I’m sure he’ll do a fine job at OSU, but what major program would want to bring him in after this as HC?
I think it's clear he doesn't want to be a head coach. He wants to coach ball.
Those recruits were mediocre, they’ll live
@@generalchromeit’s clear he wants to bounce to the nfl . Hes a one year rental for Ohio state
In his later years Chip just wants to "coach", not have to do what HEAD coaches MUST do these days in college
@@di114n2i dont think he cares where hes coaching. And to be frank, an OC/DC in CFB is way better than NFL simply bc you literally get to build your team every year. Its harder to do that in the NFL, esp at QBs bc in NFL, 5-8 elite QBs exist. In CFB its 25+ and being at OSU will guarantee a top 5 QB every year.
As a Michigan man and with all these updates on the coaching staff and transfers across the board I’ll be very happy with a 8-4+ bowl win or a 9-3+ bowl win or loss. Probably the first year in my 30 years of existence that I won’t care if we lose to Ohio.
F that-I cannot wait for Michigan to beat Ohio State for the fourth year in a row. We’re going to beat them again in their house, because Ryan Day will never be able to beat Michigan again. The only time he beat Michigan was when he was born on third base, LMAO. Here’s to another year of Michigan. Defeating Ohio State.
I just subscribed only to know you’re going to eventually dump on my TROJANS !
No commitment anymore, leaving a new job after 3 weeks. Sad and disgusting. Upside, chip kelly may well be the best OC in college football. Now why he left a HC position at UCLA for a OC position, shrug. College football is weird and broken.
60 days is way too long
On top of games fixing like Ohio state vs Notre Dame like what they do in the NFL for gambling purposes and only regular and professional gamblers know what that means
Still crazy how kids come to a school just for a coach but coaches playing musical chairs with jobs
Now the kids can play musical chairs as well. 😂
As A Michigan fan, I don't like the hire of Martindale as DC. I'll try to keep an open mind but I think we're going to lose players in the portal because of it. If they keep everyone, then I'll reassess the situation in September when play begins. Bringing in a 60 year-old to work with 19 and 20 year-olds doesn't sound like a good fit, even with his Ravens heritage.
I agree, I honestly don’t think they’ll lose anyone so I think the defense will be fine in spite of Martindale. But the defensive side of the ball has lacked recruiting the last two years (partly bc the DC doesn’t recruit which is going to continue under Martindale).
I understand why you think that but remember, he was the Ravens DC and their defenses were always really good. Yes, they’re not the exact same ones that MacDonald and Minter operated but they still have the ability to be good. The only flaw I see is that he relies too heavily on the blitz and that’s what can cost you in the end.
I've been said that but I got hate for it. The difference between all three of those. Raven coaches is age McDonald's was young. Mentor was young and both those both those guys can relate to younger kids and what the world and how we live in. But when you got a 60-year-old that's on his way out of the league. Just not the right hire
Yeah, sucks to get one of the most successful and respected DCs in the nfl that mentored Mike McDonald and Jessi Minter... What a horrible hire.

Many 'old school' HC's are not - "happy campers" ! --- Ryan Day however - is - 'evolving' quite nicely. The Knowles hire was genius - and now Kelley has to be considered a masterful move. Oregon will be more of a problem than Michigan for OSU.
Mr Jeremy F I don’t think you know what are you saying or what it means?? But I say this Ryan Day won’t survive the season short of a national championship
Brown Michael you better Google the statistics on Chip Kelly even in the NFL he had one of the top offenses every time he's ever been with he's averaged 4 to 500 yards a game if that's not good I don't think you know much about football
I think chip is the perfect hire. But ppl need to understand this isn’t Oregon 2011, 2014 Chip. I’m curious if Kelly will have full control of the offense. How much does he truly trust him? Chip should bring more balance to the offense tho. Still believe Michigan has the advantage still.
Bc Michigan’s defense is built to defend spread offenses. And Michigan’s defense is gonna be as good as they were this past season. Maybe even better.
Both teams have questions at QB.
Will OSU beat Michigan this year? You have been wrong for 3 years.
Ohio State will never beat Michigan again, as long as Day remains head coach. Michigan will go and beat Ohio State in their own house again.
