  • FOX Sports’ lead college football analyst Joel Klatt discusses the latest coaching carousel moves including Ryan Day and Ohio State hiring Chip Kelly as their new Offensive Coordinator following the departure of Bill O’Brien for Boston College. He weighs in on what Kelly’s impact on the Buckeyes’ offense will be and then looks North as Michigan hired another member of the Harbaugh family coaching tree to lead the Wolverines defense in Wink Martindale. Klatt concludes the podcast by giving his thoughts on Alabama Offensive Coordinator Ryan Grubb taking the OC job with the Seattle Seahawks and considers how big of a loss it will be for Kalen DeBoer in Year 1 in Tuscaloosa. Klatt also raises some questions about the timing of the exit occurring right as the 30-day transfer window for Alabama players was closing.

I like the Frye - Kelly combination in relation to the running game. That was OSU's shortcoming last year and it affected the offense overall. UCLA ran the ball very well with Zac Charbonneau under the Frye-Kelly coaching. I'm optimistic about this situation. The defense was much improved last year and is going to be even better this year with the experience they are bringing back and a couple of nice additions.

Joel, I think you’ve got to be the most knowledgeable, plus fair football guys in college. I love love love watching your videos and having you call my Michigan Wolverines football games. I actually live in Austin,Tx now but am originally from a suburb of Detroit and have been a Wolverines fan my whole life. For the first time in my life both the Wolverines and the Lions are both good. Being a Lions fan has been the cruelest of tasks (this includes the NFC championship game this past season, only the Lions could go from being the best team in the NFL in the first half to one of the worst teams in the NFL in the same game and the in the second half of that NFC championship) but I truly think that Detroit is going to be good, really good for a long time and for the first time in my life I actually can’t wait for the NFL to start back up as well as college football. Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you for doing such a great job and being a TV guy that I can count on to give it to me straight.. GO BLUE!! RESTORE THE ROAR!!! 8:42 am Thursday Feb. 29th

I know what you said about Chip and Day... But do you think that maybe, just maybe, Chip saw an opportunity to go and be the OC and if Ohio loses to Michigan or gets bounced in the 1st playoff game or beats Michigan then loses to them in the playoffs... As long as the offense looks good Day is probably gone... Now Chip is sitting at the prime spot to take over and has less of a headache to recruit to LA and can basically slide into a premier HC job with a BIG bump in pay

You can't start letting college kids transfer because an assistant coach leaves. I know you only mentioned this as a collective bargaining chip, but it has to stop somewhere. College kids have the freedom to choose whatever college they would like to attend. A lot of the kids are now being paid, so honor your decision. Someone coming from college to the NFL has no choice, they have to go to whatever team drafts them. If an NFL coach is fired, if they quit, whatever the case may be, that player is stuck with that team until free agency. NFL free agency is earned, it isnt automatically given to a player as soon as they walk into the door. If a player wants NIL and signs the NIL deal, they should have to stay at the school 3 years regardless of the situation. If they want to transfer year 4, after putting in 3 years, so be it. The constant movement is detrimental for the sport, and I say that as a Buckeye. Someone who's team has benefited greatly from the all of the player movement. It just isn't good for the sport.

You can look at the Chip Kelly hire more than one way. Ryan Day and Chip reuniting can be great cause of familiarity, it could also under achieve cause of possibly having a comfort zone and complacency. Sometimes it works out working with friends and sometimes it doesn’t work out. Another thing is Chip while great at Oregon and his 1st year with the Eagles the defenses caught up to his scheme in the nfl and and at ucla. At ucla he hasn’t been that close to his Oregon days success. With him UCLA wasn’t recruiting at even a consistent top 20 level. Now the feeling is Chip didn’t like to recruit and especially in the nil era along with ucla’s as an athletic department lack of commitment to progress with their football program. Another way to look at it is with Chip and the familiar ties with Day and Frye they can be dangerous. Chip has much more talent to work with and that can bring his mojo back. Taking 2 great offensive minds in Day and Chip and combining that to bring a hybrid of Chip’s running schemes with Day’s passing philosophy. I think that’s the case. With Will Howard being a mobile qb and not being an overtly accurate qb I think OSU will be more run oriented but still balanced. Be more unpredictable and take more chances with unorthodox plays. Howard working with Day should improve his passing ability and Howard has much more talent to work with as well. I think OSU goes 55% run to 45% pass, maybe 50-40. Regardless OSU should have at least a top 10 offense again to go along with a top 2 defense

As A Michigan fan, I don't like the hire of Martindale as DC. I'll try to keep an open mind but I think we're going to lose players in the portal because of it. If they keep everyone, then I'll reassess the situation in September when play begins. Bringing in a 60 year-old to work with 19 and 20 year-olds doesn't sound like a good fit, even with his Ravens heritage.

    • @YourAverageFan

I agree, I honestly don’t think they’ll lose anyone so I think the defense will be fine in spite of Martindale. But the defensive side of the ball has lacked recruiting the last two years (partly bc the DC doesn’t recruit which is going to continue under Martindale).
