  • Fox Sports’ lead college football analyst Joel Klatt talks with Ohio State’s Ryan Day about the expectations and pressure that comes with being the head coach in Columbus. Coach Day discusses why he made the decision to give up play calling and whether Buckeye fans will notice a difference on Offense with Chip Kelly as the OC this upcoming season. Day breaks down why several NFL Draft-eligible players on his team came together to return for one more season and also reveals whether Michigan’s National Championship has provided extra motivation for the Buckeyes to win it all in 2024. The two also discuss Nick Saban’s retirement and adapting to the challenges in the new world of college football with NIL and the Transfer Portal. Joel and Coach wrap up the episode by picking their favorite play calls during Day’s tenure at Ohio State.

For everyone saying that Michigan is living rent free and Ryan day's head. Well yeah...that's kinda how rivalries work.
Jim harbaugh could not get the job done at Michigan so he went for help to his brother who gave him a defensive coordinator and he decided to change his entire philosophy around what Michigan is going to be and they turn things around and win three straight. Does harbaugh do that if they were beating Ohio State? Absolutely not.

Oh, little boy, does someone need a hug?
So you never played much less understand football? Just say that and stop trying to deflect your program’s failures onto your betters.
Since you don’t read and don’t do research and don’t avail yourself of the knowledge of those who do (Joel Klatt for one, who said, “The more someone talks about sign stealing the less they know about football.”), I’ll let you in on some facts.
Every team tries to steal signs. For that reason every team changes their signs. It’s well known that Ryan Day had Michigan’s signs in 2018 and 2019. You beat us decisively both years. Was it the signs? No. You had superior athletes and we were trying to match you defensively and we couldn’t. Do Michigan fans play your stupid punctuation games with your accomplishments those years. No. Instead, because Jim Harbaugh is an adult and takes responsibility, he took steps to get better. He did. We did.
It’s also well-known that Ryan Day (and he stated this publicly) changed Ohio State’s signs before the ‘22 game.
So it’s actually really simple. If you watched the ‘21 game-do you actually watch football?-Michigan dominated that game at the line of scrimmage, on both sides of the ball.
In the ‘22 game, Jim Knowles tried to play Illinois’ man defense against JJ McCarthy and paid the price for his reckless arrogance, a 31-point upset at home. Did it take sign stealing for JJ to look over and see Cam Martinez, a safety who didn’t even start on defense in high school, on Cornelius Johnson with no help over the top and say to himself, “You want to play zero coverage? Fine! Stand by!”
In the 2023 game Knowles stepped up your defense significantly, but it was Ryan Day’s conservative, soft, risk averse play calling that got you off schedule and on your heels the entire game.
The only * necessary for the past 3 seasons ought to go next to Ryan Day’s record, for losing 3 times to a Michigan team with far less talent but far greater coaching and development.
Of note, the NFL seemed to think the Michigan players, 19 of them belonged on NFL rosters, your amateur-hour semantics notwithstanding.
Or do you know more about football than they do? Yeah, thought not.

If your head coach was literally a traffic cone, you guys would win like 10 or 11 games each year with all the players you purely just buy. Ryan Day is only being paid to beat the top teams and win playoff games and in that task he is failing miserably at it. But please keep loving him, because we LOVE that he is your HC. Absolutely!
Given that he wasn’t the problem against Michigan, and he wasn’t, McCord wanted assurances that he would start next year. Day wouldn’t give him that. Day claims he’s about the players, but if that were true he wouldn’t be throwing money around and replacing all the players he claims to care so much about; he’d develop them and the culture.
That’s the main difference between Michigan and “Lil o”
Michigan wins with culture and player development. Ohio State is a mercenary finishing school for the NFL; they recruit far too many players looking ahead to their own individual goals rather than team goals.
That didn’t change this last off season.
