- Shared for educational purposes. The original debate was titled "Debate: Anti-Zionism is Anti-Semitism." Made by Intelligence Squared and published in 2019. I think this is a great example of a difficult debate because it's not altogether clear who is right. By that I mean that they all seem to present strong arguments. Something I was thinking about when I was trying to summarize my thoughts about this, I think that maybe some of the difficult problems in the world are all connected in some way. For example, are these just British people talking about some far away place? Put another way, do definitions matter? Essentially, how do we approach difficult subjects? How does one learn what the right answer is?
The other thing which I think is important is how to understand rhetoric. But I thought this was a good debate. Nowadays the debates that I've watched recently all seem to turn into aggressive arguments. So maybe the art of debating is being lost. I think the challenge with debates or any type of speech is being able to listen to what's being said rather than the way that it's said. Some people are excellent speakers, it's easy to assume that people who speak really well will always be right. But in my opinion it's not really the quality of how the words are said that matters, but what exactly is being said. So again back to definitions of the words themselves.
But I think this emphasis on difficult debates is timely as America will continue to have endless debates in which the correct definitions of words will be argued over and it won't be clear what the right answers are. Many more difficult debates for many more years. Lastly, I think a good way to learn about these things is to compare and contrast, maybe there should be an effort to understand juxtapositions.
Extra silence at the end so this won't be relegated to youtube shorts.
