Old Man Marigold Variatus Platy And Community Fish Tank Mates

  • It's been a year and a half since I got my first fish after getting back into the aquarium hobby in July of 2017. The fish I've had the longest now, a male marigold variatus platy, has become an old man. It got me thinking of how this 30 gallon planted livebearer community tank has evolved and how I added each group of fish after quarantine periods along with lots of the guppies and platies that were born in this tank. My reflecting on this tank's development lead to my rambling on for about 25 minutes which I believe is the longest video I've submitted to date.

    You say that you can't tell most of them apart early in the video but go on to explain the origins of the community in depth. I'd say you know them pretty well. Nice tank!

      Thanks. That's what I like about community tanks with livebearers. Some of the offspring look all the same, but then some individuals stand out too. It was lots of fun adding different aspects to this tank along the way.

      All those you mentioned except no mollies. What looks like mollies might be platies or variatus platies. That big red and black striped fish is a Roseline Shark aka Denison Barb. There's also guppies and endlers, otocinclus, andjulii corydoras. Since this video I've also added a couple Siamese Algae Eaters and a Panda Garra.

    Nice looking fish and tank. I'm thinning mine out today from three such tanks, and taking 50 to lfs, so I can consolidate and use the tanks for fancy guppy breeding. I'll still have plenty of stock so no worries about losing Swordtails, Platies, or Guppies. I have that same sponge and attachment. It dislodged and one of my rare black african tetras was sucked halfway in and got stuck. Dead when I found it. So the lone one is left. Searching for a replacement. I don't use that filter anymore. I think the fish are large enough in that tank to knock it lose. Thanks for the video and history of the tank.

    • @jeffsaquariumhobbyenjoymen9468
      @jeffsaquariumhobbyenjoymen9468  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Bob. It's probably about the time to start thinning the herd and giving fish away. Several times since I've used java moss strands and tied it around the intake sponge to help hold it in place. But then the java moss grows much and gets in the way when I need to clean it. It came loose only that one time though so now I just try to be careful and squeeze it tight.

    • @jobkaashoek
      @jobkaashoek 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You'll definitely have to thin out your livebearer population. If you want to keep your aquarium healthy long-term, you should be doing it about now. Bring the ones you like the least / the ones you have the least personal bond with to the pet store and get money or products for them or give them away to anyone who wants them. I'd say you cut your population in half and you can let them do their thing for a while 😊. I'd love to see that process too!

    So this entire school of platies came from one pair of platies?
    Platies don't suffer from inbreeding?

    • @jeffsaquariumhobbyenjoymen9468
      @jeffsaquariumhobbyenjoymen9468  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well all the marigold variatus platies are descendants of one original female. Some have mixed genes with other platies that have been added along the way. I think there's enough diversity now that interbreeding won't be too much of an issue.

      @@NicolasLaBarre Yes. I'd try different things and I'd still do some things similarly. I'd try to make it the ultimate community tank. I'd leave some more open areas for swimming that aren't too planted. I'd get a group of roseline sharks instead of just the one here. I'd get several large groups of new types of schooling fish that I don't already have, like rummy nose tetras, brilliant rasboras, pristella tetras, scissortail rasboras. I'd still load it with livebearers. Probably get pairs or trios of all different colors platies and swordtails trying to get as many that I don't already have. A ton of corydoras. Maybe some 6 inch gouramis instead of dwarf gouramis. Or maybe angelfish. I'd get some dwarf cichlids like kribensis and apistogrammas and set of caves for them on opposite sides of the tank. And more that I haven't even thought of yet. I don't know when, but at some point in the future I definitely expect to have a 125.
