I have brigittae rasboras female endlers and neons schooling together in my betta tank. I also have some Amanos in there, but it took several months for them to realize that they don't have to hide from the betta. I really hit the jackpot with this one, he's so docile, he doesn't even attack baby shrimp.

Dominic H. The betta I had with my neons was given to me by one of my frat brothers. I forget why he had it but it turned out to be a pretty mild mannered fish. In fact, most of the bettas I’ve owned over the years have been pretty docile towards everything except pond snails lol

Survive unheated winter temperatures in my house (I keep it at 55*F in the winter for economic reasons) From what I've read not many aquarium fish tolerate waters that cold. Very active too, even in cold water.

Another idea is the blue spider crab, which is a amazing purple (or dark blue, I can't tell) they are as big as you can do for a 20 gal, so only get one, they are more of a vivarium type animal though, so it would be ideal for mostly land with a pool for them to soak in, VERY active and fun to keep

I have a 29 gallon. At the moment I have a siamese algae eater, rainbow shark, pineapple swordtail, juvenile bluegill, breeding pair of kribensis cichlids and a old nerite snail. The bluegill is a temporary inhabitant. I am going to move my common goldfish and south american bumble bee catfish from my 5.5 gallon to the 29 when the ammonia is solved and when the catfish is a little bigger. I am going to put in a yellow tail spiny eel, black ghost knife (temporarily), maybe some kuhli loaches, pictus catfish, black fin shark catfish (I am going to grow him out for a saltwater tank we are planning on setting up for my school based scuba club), either a stickleback or a fathead minnow, and probably a couple others later.

I had 4-5 convict cichlids in my 20 gallon long. People will say that size is too small for so many, and from that experience I agree, but I made it work with lots of silk plants, caves, driftwood, etc. For them to claim and hide in. I'd taken them home after finding out that they were going to be abandoned in a cold classroom for several weeks during winter vacation after an experiment was completed and were in a liter soda bottle. I didn't even know what they were, but I had a tank already and added them. They ate everyone but my apple snail. Such a diet allowed them to get big fast.
I loved them and they were adorable when they came up to the tank wall with their tails wagging, and I liked watching them do their territory dances/displays.
I enjoyed my danios before the cichlids ate them. I'd like to have danios again sometime.

Years ago I took a 200 gallon tank , and it was heavily planted , everytime I went to 1 specific fish store I bought 1 male and 3 female guppies and just let them all crossbreed with each other. At one point after I had acquired 20-25 different color strains of guppies it looked like a rainbow exploded

This was just perfect cause today I got a 20 gal Ultum Nature Systems tank! I'm gonna add some killifish and psudomugil that I already have but I'll look into the neon Tetra School! Great video!

Cory, this video hit all the marks for my family! My first tank was a danio and Cory tank, my sister LOVES shrimp, and my dad loves the neon tank. I’m sending this link to anyone asking what to do with their 20s!

I agree with you, I’ve been out of it for a while but I went out and bought a 29 and I’ve been looking at all my options and the only fish that are realistically an option are going to be neon Tetris or ember Tetris or Chili Rasboras. The rest boroughs are too hard to get and going to be really expensive for that many. I wind up with either Amber or neon Tetris andI’ll do two or three male guppies and about 6 ottocinclus eventually once it’s established. I’ll put some glass shrimp and some neocaradina and snails. First I need to figure out how to regulate my pH, it’s about 6.5 to 6.6 now with zero GH and only 2 KH. Call start with plants and fish first and get used to keeping it balanced, I think I’ll do about 15 Tetris, I would like to do 6 ottos with 6 pigmy Cory carts too. I’ll do a 30 inch planter with lava rock and pothose which will bring it up to about 32 or 33 gallons, but I’m just not sure if it will handle the bio load. That’s why am sticking to the neon and ember tetras, they’re smaller. I wish I had a store like yours closer, we just have Petco and Petsmart here and even that is an hour away. There are a couple of marine stores another 20 minutes away I’ll check it out but we have almost nothing around here.

I so wish you made this video sooner, entered the hobby late last year and was watching a lot of vids to try to get some ideas. You've inspired me for future tanks though. Thank you!

Right now I have two 20-gallon tanks running on a double stand. The upper tank has 9 Beacon Tetras with a single Ancistrus (Bristle-nose), Anubias Plants and a Moss Ball, with plain gravel, river stones and Mopani wood. The lower tank has 4 Black Skirt Tetras with a single Ancistrus (Bristle-nose), Anubias Plants and a Moss Ball, with plain gravel, river stones and Mopani wood. In the past I've kept Neon Tetras, Glowlight Tetras and Black Neons with the same basic setup.

20 gallon long is one of my favourite aquarium sizes. The fish prefer more of the horizontal space.

Very helpful video. I needed to restock my 29gal and was inspired by the ideas presented here. I decided on planted (of course) with Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish up top, long fin serpae tetra in the middle and dwarf chain loach down low. They are all still small but very happy with the setup. Thank you for providing great ideas for stocking.

You just solved a nearly one year old mystery! I had never heard of Japanese Trapdoor snails before watching this, and your description matched up a lot with the snail I got from my local pond shop! His name is Curly and he lived in my 55 gallon Ranchu tank. He’s about the size of a golf ball and was sold to me as a “pond snail” and the guy working there wasnt sure what he was. Looked up the pictures and yup, thats my kid!

During the summer I set up the 10 gallon pseudomugil luminatus tank you suggested and wow it is still my fav. This gave me a ton of good ideas for an upcoming 37 gallon but I see it housing my guppies. Love me some gup gups.

Just decided to do a neon tetra tank in my 20T last week. Matched those with a my leftover 8 pygmy cory cats and 3 blue mystery snails. It really is a simple but beautiful tank. It's really funny when the pygmys come out and "school" with the neons.

It's funny that you say "showstopper," because no matter how many tanks I set up and what size they are, my 20 gallon long has always had the BEST plant growth! All my planted tanks are low-tech and for whatever reason, the 20 has always been the most successful. And not only that, but I also feel that any fish I put in there always does well. Lucky tank maybe? Right now it contains some fire red apistos and they are doing great.
