I used to keep platies, Swordtails, and guppies. I also was very fond of glowline tetras. One fish a little off the beaten path was the paradise fish. I even had some success breading the paradise fish.
Great episode! Platys, unfortunately, are often passed over for the "fancier" fish but they're amazing in their own right. Glad to see them get some love. :)
Platies are awesome! I had 5 that I bought from petco, that unfortunately were not very healthy so all but one female passed away. That was over a year ago, and I am STILL finding new fry in that tank!!! I have 6 fish in there now including the mother.
I love platies,. Always kept small ponds of them around my garden. They're amazing, colourful and freindly and will readily come to you for feeding not shy at all. My favorite at the moment is the '"Sunrise platy" as opposed to the more freely available "sunset" platy. They get pretty big, watch them grow, third year they're the largest. They're a gorgeous colour like a parrot. Bright solid yellow tail end and blood red top half and head. Males sometimes have high fins but it's mixed with mine, the dorasl fin is always a stunning yellow in males. Females are nice too, not so red with a yellow tail. I want the jewel like blue/green ones but haven't seen them for years and years around here. Little tip the platty types happily breed with one another so if you mixed them all together they wont come true to type but you will get interesting surprises colour wise. So mickey mouse platies will breed with sunset platies etc.
I’ve kept fish for over 20 years now and have never owned Platys until this week. I wanted something colourful for my smaller tank. I have to say, they are lovely fish and I’m going to have fun learning about them. I have a Central American tank with some big bad boys in. Such a difference uh.....🤪
Gotta love the central American cichlids! I actually wanted to do a tank with central American cichlids and platys, both come from the same region and it would be like a biotope setup. I've seen some on youtube and the combo is amazing!
Great video. What are the big Leaved plants on the left? actually what are all of the plants, I am just starting to get into planting my tank and having a hard time choosing
I have 25-30 pieces of them in my 48 gallon tank along with 100 ember tetras and 8 corys.Had only kept them since I got into the hobby 13 years ago. Was never interested in other fishes. Platies until I die!
I love platys , I just bought 5, probably shouldn't have though because I already had a lot of fish. I also have 12 giant danios 13 zebra danios 5 male cherry barbs 1 swordtail 1 pearl gourami and 3 very old white cloud minnows. The white clouds are what's left over from a group of 20 I got years ago the others all died off from old age . I have a 60 gallon, they all have plenty of room so I don't think it's too overcrowded. One of the platys I got looks pregnant.
Platys where my first tropical fish and they were so cool 🤗🤗 congrats on the free swimmers DW that is an awesome spawn indeed ... congrats on the 50 episodes 🤗🤗
Definitely when I got them the first thing they did was give birth and that was it I was hooked .... I'm awake so early today with excitement ... stripping my tropheus today it's day 10 and I want some babies 😂😂
Love your Amazing Fish ...you have so much knowledge about many different kinds of fish....planning to do a community tank with bettas....any information for a seniority bettas...not sure how many to get at first....have a 30 gallons tank...first time tanker...congratulations on your Mile stone...keep them coming!
Thank you...I honestly never kept a betta seniority, but from what I read first you need plants, rocks, driftwood and/or other décor to help distract them from each other and I think adding them in groups at a time, maybe 2-3 at a time would be the best way to go...once again I never did it myself, but if I would that's how I would do it.
I don't gravel vac with these plants, the plants benefit from the waste from the fish so no need to vacuum. The fish poops acts as a sort of fertilizer for the plants, I just drain water, remove dead leaves and that's all that's need...especially with root feeding plants like the crypts I have in this tank
iv had no luck breeding, i got a clean tank, real plants good shelter, 2 gold barbs,2 small barbs,1 bristlenose,2 yoyo loach,2 female platys/Koi and orange, iv had luck with mollies a year ago but i got to save 1 but it died from fin rot. i bought a male platy today and he seems to dance a tiny bit but very shy still, hes bigger then my females and iv hd my females for 1 year now.
If possible try to get a group of platies, they are most comfortable in tanks with a good amount of their own species...probably 5 or more is good. Also create as much hiding spots as possible with lots of rocks across the bottom because those loaches can be good hunters
hey just curious, i have platys and i have a small male and he hides at the top of my filter, my water temp is 25 degrees and ph is 7.4, if there anything im missing?
How about your tanks aquascape? They can be shy fish so keeping a few hiding spots in the tank helps them become more comfortable an open. If he's the only one doing that, its probably just an issue of fear
Hi Darius.. Amazing milestone.. 50 ep. Congrats! And on your cloud of babies.. excellent episode - loved it... I like how we all seem to evolve in our presentations. Great community!
6:16 what’s that big lump growing on your fish belly ....one of my fish has it too .. but she can’t be pregnant tho cus all my fish in my tank are female
Mine was pregnant. Are you sure you only have females? Also how long have you had them...I've had occasions were I bought females that were newly pregnant and gave birth in my tank months later
DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS I think they all are because when I brought them I asked for female only. And I got them like September last year lol...Also this has already happened like in October ( a month after buying the fish) my other platy fish has the same lump on her belly but then few days later it disappeared lol and i couldn’t find any babies in the tank lol.
as always brother another amazing video😀👌👌great job on those green terrors I'm raising a bunch of them in my 120 gallon tank congrats on this 50th amazing video right here special video right! Great job your doing🌟🌟
I'll tell you what man, this series were some of the first youtube fish videos I watched lol. 🍻🍻 to the milestone brother. keep it up. What kind of lighting you rocking on that 55? Good looking low tech growth there.
Yes, a bullfrog tadepole. I had him since last spring along with a few others in my pond, the rest transformed and he still a tadpole and now temps are dropping so I brought him in!
Nice video. I am setting up a new 10 gallon tank, and looking for fish who be happy with the tank size I have. I do not want to breed because, I worry I may run out of space. Would it be best to have all females?
Thank you, with these fish even if you buy females, its a high chance they could give birth in your tank from being pregnant. Platy's along with most live bearers, once they reach adulthood are almost always pregnant, so if you pick out females there is still a chance you could get a pregnant female who can give birth to males. All males might work, males are aggressive towards one another but if you have enough (5-6 for a 10 gallon tank (platy (if that's what You want)))...if you really don't want them to breed
and how many can I keep in a 20 gallon tank with one blue guppy, 6 red cherry shrimp, 2 amano shrimps, 4 otocinclus catfish, and 2 emerald eye rasboras...they are in a lightly planted tank. have a problem with hair algae.
I heard that platys eat their young, I have one big platy with two babies and they're all still alive, what's happening? it would be helpful if you could reply thanks
Yes they will try to eat their young...if they can catch them! In my tank the babies spend their days hiding under leaves and behind rocks, only coming out for food. If you provide good hiding places for the young they have a higher rate of survival...and you don't need much just rocks, plants add an extra bonus
How many big fish do you have? That is a interesting scenario! Its not uncommon for just 2 to be born, on average a single platy birth can have between 2-5. How often do you feed them, perhaps is they are always full they have no interest to eat their young
Darius I've been trying to keep this fish for 3 years now off and on. They only live for 6 months for please help what am I doing wrong. They normal start dying after the fisrt fry or born
Mollies grow to about 4-6 inches while platy's stay at about 2 inches...platy's are from central America while mollies can be found from central American up to the south east of the US, also mollies are brackish fish meaning that in the wild they live in waters that have slight salinity which means in the hobby they can live in freshwater and saltwater tanks
Platys don't eat snails...and for the most part they don't nip fins. Maybe a male harassing a female could nip a fin...but its never happened in my tank. If you want a good snail eater...badis badis is a good choice...mine destroyed my Malaysian trumpet snail population. Dward Pea puffers do a even better job but they may nip fins
Platies and swordtail cannot impregnate female guppies right ? I have a single male swordtail and I don't want him to make pregnant my female guppies .
Hey Darius I see you have some Angelfish in there with those guppies and platy's. I didn't know they were peaceful together??🤔🤔 OR is it that the tank should be large in side and have ALOT of plants??🤔🤔 Also would just 1 or 2 should be enough in a community tank??🤔🤔
Hey, in my years of keeping angel fish I haven't had any problems mixing them with smaller fish...they got a long fine with my platy's and guppies (of course they tried to hunt the fry every now and then). Yes 1 can be kept in a community tank, with 2 you might have aggression between the 2 but in a tank 40 gallons or larger it shouldn't be too much of a problem
@@dwsdarius Super👍👍 I wondered how that would work with fry. But I think one would be best then. The platy's are great. And the colors do attract people to your tanks. Thanks so much Darius!!
Also even though I've done my research about plates, everybody at petco recommended mollies for eating hair algae...is it true that they are better than platies or is it just that they want to sell more of the mollies? I'd rather have platies if they will hungrily devour all the hair algae on my live plants and tank walls, etc.
Mollies will do a slightly better job than platies...I think mostly because they live in freshwater and saltwater in the wild and that's primarily what they eat.
Yes platies will also eat it, mine love it even when I feed them normally. If you have a lot of hair algae, they should spend the majority of their day grazing on it
Quick note do not buy one platy and put it in the tank itself, about 6/7 months into owning mines I woke up to a tank of fry 🙄 platy pregnancy lasts about a month and they reproduce asexually when they're bored or lonely. From that batch I have a genetically deformed fry basically it's tail is sticking straight up rather than straight so expect deformities as well if this happens
Wow! I don't think they can asexually reproduce...rather a lot of people buy newly pregnant females...while females pretty much stay pregnant if their are males in the tank.
dwsdarius I already had this female fish for 6/7 months in a tank herself without a mate for that full duration, female platy are pregnant the majority of their adult life even if they don't have a mate. They're born with a semen sac and basically just decide they'll drop a few fry when they're lonely. Magic
C L they can hold the sperm in them for up to a year so she didn't asexually reproduce she just had extra sperm in her from when she was with a male before you got her ;)

Hi, what's that green fish with a jet-plane like tail? Single one swimming among the platys...?
I think you were talking about my female molly
How many fish did you have in that 55 gallon tank? I am planning on getting a 75 gallon with the same kind of fish.
I had about 20 platies( adults and fry), 20 harlequin rasbora and about 10 others...but I was overstocked
What is the size of tank?
55 gallons
iv had no luck breeding, i got a clean tank, real plants good shelter, 2 gold barbs,2 small barbs,1 bristlenose,2 yoyo loach,2 female platys/Koi and orange, iv had luck with mollies a year ago but i got to save 1 but it died from fin rot. i bought a male platy today and he seems to dance a tiny bit but very shy still, hes bigger then my females and iv hd my females for 1 year now.

How many platy would you recommend putting in a 6 gallon tank?
Probably 4-5
What size aquarium do you recommend for 3 adult platys? 1 aggressive male and 2 females.
A 20 gallon that has a lot of plants would be a nice size, within weeks you'll have a dozen because of how fast they breed
congrats on 50th episode. i love this series. the 55g tropical looks awesome. great job👍👍👍

dwsdarius I already had this female fish for 6/7 months in a tank herself without a mate for that full duration, female platy are pregnant the majority of their adult life even if they don't have a mate. They're born with a semen sac and basically just decide they'll drop a few fry when they're lonely. Magic
C L they can hold the sperm in them for up to a year so she didn't asexually reproduce she just had extra sperm in her from when she was with a male before you got her ;)
How many fish you had in that aquarium??
About 25, that's a estimate including the platy fry that were roaming around
looked like more, im wondering how much to put in my 75 gallon aquarium
Mollies
