Wow...Ya know, John just had a certain way with his chords/chord progressions that I'm not sure was seen in pop music before or since. Thinking about chords in Imagine, Oh My Love, Free as a Bird, etc...his chord progressions are beautifully hypnotic, where more typical pop chords are interspersed with these sudden, gorgeous ethereal minor, diminished, and augmented chords that just take ya somewhere. I mean this song is a gorgeous example of this...Lennon genius!
Spot on! I always subconsciously admired John’s chord progressions, they spoke to me in a way. No I’m learning to appreciate consciously the way he builds cord progressions in such a unique and as you say ethereal manner. Reminds me a bit of Beethoven at times but in a totally different context
Oh, all those boys. They’ll blindside you with augmented jazz chords never usually used in pop songs. Hybrid weird comin from the left kinda progression or shifting up or down - seemingly out of key bridge or chorus. Masterful understatement. Slipped in like an $8000 dollar electricity bill cunningly disguised as a takeaway coupon.

Out of all the Anthology tracks this is my favourite one. And this original demo is maybe even better then what the remaining three cooked up. John’s voice is very delicate but gorgeous here and the songwriting is very pretty.
As someone who had just finished high school and a huge fan of John’s, to come home from my part-time job to hear Howard Cosell suddenly announce on TV that h’d been shot and killed was too much to bear. We lost one for the ages when we lost him.

There were several factors that split them, and it was equally Paul and John--and to an almost equal extent George, in fact!--who pulled the plug on the band. Yoko was a disrupting presence to some extent but I take most of the criticism of her to fundamentally wrong and, sometimes, racist in implication.
I had the same experience I graduated high school in 1980 and was working at the college and they had tv on and as I walking by they announced John Lennon was shot and killed I stopped and just cried. He is always will be my favorite

I've been listening to the Beatles Anthology version since it came out in 90's. This is the first time I heard the demo I am shocked how much better, soulful and meaningful the original recording sounds/feels. The video from anthology was wonderful with its graphics and feel. BUT It completely missed the heart of the song. It was a good video, but it really sold these lyrics and tonality short. This one touches the heart in a way the other doesn't. Thx for posting it.

What a beautifully crafted piece of musical composition that was existentially put together while Lennon quietly perhaps spent those quiet moments stitching those pieces of the notes like a quilted blanket with sections of those patches infused...all the while, the weather outside was gray and cloudy and the pitter-patter of the raindrops can be heard outside a nearby window.
I guess at the end of the day it’s real love, and no matter what happens no one can take that away from us. Love really is it. I love my worms and not even my mother can take them from me. Love to you all

I'm grateful John Lennon existed in this earth and reached his earthly death having achieved all he did. And through his grief and suffering, he channeled it and created so much. So much that his work and existence will forever be remembered. And I give him credit for falling in love genuinely and living by example. His willingness to be vulnerable, so vulnerable to write and say his heart and mind. Yoko gives credit every day for the light and love and access to a whole different world. He saved her. I'm sorry, but I can never view Yoko in a positive light. John loved her, that's for sure. Yoko used John for her own advances. She, in my opinion, was the wet, dour blanket that smothered John's creativity. Compare any of John & Yoko's videos with Paul & Linda McCartney clips. Yoko virtually never smiles. Meanwhile, Paul & Linda are yucking it up, and having a grand old time in their videos. Linda complimented Paul, whereas Yoko stifled and inhibited John. Again, in my opinion, John's best album overall was Wall and Bridges, made during the "lost weekend" separation from Yoko. He was unshackled, and appeared to be the John we knew from 1964 (apart from the drunken embarrassments).

This is so cool to hear the original song. I am glad they sampled this and made a song with the complete Beatles in the early 90's. Love hearing "lost songs" to get to hear years after an artist's passing. John was so rare. And they are all great guys. ♥
I love when he hits that natural 6th note in the pre chorus on the word alone in “no need to be alone”. Adding the sixth on top of the iv chord implies either Dorian or Melodic Minor. Very beautiful and Beatles-y trick

This is so cool to hear the original song. I am glad they sampled this and made a song with the complete Beatles in the early 90's. Love hearing "lost songs" to get to hear years after an artist's passing. John was so rare. And they are all great guys. ♥
I am glad to see that John is returning to the ranks on TH-cam. There are so many "new" videos that highlight his life.
