I always thought Paul made the whole of that verse up. I didn't realise John actually wrote the first two lines and then didn't know how to finish it. The first line that Paul adds: "can we really live without each other?" I'm gonna go and cry now.

❤❤❤Thank you Jeff Lynne (ELO) for making this reunion possible and for your fabulous contribution in producing the Beatles. Also thank you for producing and co-writing for the last 3 Beatles individually on their solo albums and the same for so many other great Legends including the Traveling Wilburys...
Jeff Lynne and ELO’s music has inspired folks who prefer ‘real music’ for years, as well as his work Re-introducing Beatles’ music to a new generation. A true studio master! But the truly priceless gems are John’s homemade demo tapes of Free As A Bird, Real Love, Imagine, tracks from Double Fantasy, etc. A bit like Elvis’ Louisiana Hayride and Sun Record tapes (E on piano) Raw, unquestionable musical talent.

Lennon was a metaphysical lyricist, his musical and poetic images are mysterious and sublime. His best songs are full of transcendent, sleepy, strange sadness. Stockhausen was also amazed at Lennon's modulations. It's a pity that the rock'n'roll era and John's rock'n'roll background pushed his main calling as a philosophical lyricist (although I love his furious rock'n'rolls).
The key change is pretty amazing. It's so unusual as a bridge but so simple and effective in execution. But what took it to the next level was George's slide guitar solo, along with the rest of the group's harmonies. They and Jeff Lynne nailed the fuck out of John's original vision for this song.
John, cuantas obras de arte como esta quedaron pendientes. Verdaderas joyas musicales con inmensas composiciones y una exquisita voz, letras donde desnudabas tus sentimientos mas profundos. Gracias por todo lo que nos dejaste. 💫💕
Just a hauntingly great version, it was good that Paul, George and Ringo helped out and finished this great song off for John! Love the Beatles music so much RIP John and George ❤

I can never hear this without hearing the fragment where he sings a melody without lyrics which is identical to a part of the Flash Gordon soundtrack by QUEEN. It happens a couple of tines for example at 2.14
John tenía muy buen material para los 80's. No sé si iba a ser su mejor época en las listas -ya no le interesaba ello- pero sí iba a sacar grandísimas canciones.
This outstanding piece of music coupled with that guitar George Harrison recorded afterwards made not only one of the best Beatles songs but one of the best ever written.
Because he wasn't working from this tape but from a fourth generation tape with a lot of noise on it, no consistent tempo, and he only had 90s tech to solve both issues.
Yes, voice and piano sound surprising clean and balanced to me too. But in the Beatles anthology version of this, they double-tracked John's voice. I don't think they added distortion, especially when the aim was to make it sound as clean as possible.

Coo! All this time I thought the bridges were original writings by at least Paulie and maybe Georgie but Johnny wrote it ALL (except for a few lyrics added by P & G)
Imagine if John was alive today… time would be so different. I’m sure social problems would be more of a concern to people and real information be most important to people. Since he left and many others, the free thinking went out the window for the majority. We need people like him today more than ever. Give peace a chance…
Was John singing about his band mates? It’s a beautiful song and lyrics… I’d like to think he was really missing them and how they were together in their lives 😔
Now and Then will be released in a day. After that, this song should be next in line. Will Giles Martin and Peter Jackson correct the mistakes Jeff Lynne did in 1995?

Until reading these comments I though the actual Beatles did a great job of finishing an early-stage demo, and made a song John would have been happy with. After all, his widow asked them to do it, and they probably knew him best musically. But now, as always, the real experts are in the comments. I see that those English dum-dums Paul, George, and Ringo are coattail-riding ruiners. No one can improve in the magical way with words John had. Can anyone really say that the Beatles' release version is better than: "Whatever happened to The life that we once knew Weh wa dehweh dahhh dun da doo doo doo "Whevah happened to The life that we once knew Hmm hmm nmmm nmmm mmmm-mm "Free as a bird Ahh dah dun dun dooohoo Dun da doo doo free..." Those words still bring a tear to my eye.
John’s genius was still fully intact in the late 70s into 1980. Such a tragic loss.

It's Johnny,he's the music's summit, along with the other three.Theyve always been magical that way.
It’s easy when you’re John Lennon.

I’ve been listening to the demos of this and Real Love lately. I like both versions.
que saudades deles,é só ouvir e curtir
They should remaster this song like they have done with Now and then in 2023
Both versions are amazing in my opinion
Why did Jeff Lynne feel the need to add so much distortion to John's voice? This sounds amazing as is
Because he wasn't working from this tape but from a fourth generation tape with a lot of noise on it, no consistent tempo, and he only had 90s tech to solve both issues.
I Iike Lynne's version, because it sounds like the Beatles and as I understood that that was his job, so he did, as always, like a genius ❤
It sounds rough. The effects were to mask the distortion in the recording and to make it sound like an applied effect in itself
i like ELO, but prefer this version, the jeff lynne version sound like travelling wilburys
Yes, voice and piano sound surprising clean and balanced to me too. But in the Beatles anthology version of this, they double-tracked John's voice. I don't think they added distortion, especially when the aim was to make it sound as clean as possible.

This is much better than the Beatles version, actually makes me cry! Real touching. Hate Jeff lynn always turn the “Beatles version” into ELO version
Pauls filler lyrics for the hums were masterful. Maybe a truer Lennon/McCartney work than Now and Then even though I love both.
I always figured Paul wrote the turn around part in the chorus.. but nope. The whole song was essentially there in that one sitting.
