ezzriin... holy cow. For the longest time, I've thought, "Man, I see so much Watcher Grian content, but I haven't seen any animatics about his actual CONVERSION to a Watcher." I had originally planned on doing an animatic myself, but didn't exactly know how to approach it. I no longer need to. This is flawless. The music, the colours, the expressions, the frames... the way the story progressed. I was just staring at the screen, my heart in my throat, drinking everything in. I felt like the screen was swallowing me into this storyline, and your masterful editing to the music just elevated this animatic to a level I rarely see. It's not just good, it's *beautiful.* The ending had me choking up. I will be watching this again and again. I truly cannot express in words how this made me feel. You struck something in my soul. the watcher's lore has always been very mysterious to me and i believe it will remain the same. I never really understood what the lore was about, and I also didn’t understand the story of your video, but I still miraculously felt what it was about. Great work
Basically, grian was on a server called Evo smp. There were beings called the watchers. They were a metaphor for the viewers. They made grian into a watcher, because he had to leave the smp early, but he was always watching. When he was on 3rd life, the watchers tell us that he was supposed to only watch, not participate. but grian can’t stand to not do anything, so he un-became a watcher, and re-became a player, albeit with slight differences.
My theory about it was that the Watcher's being unable to fully interact with the players or anything really made them more cruel, to gain more enjoyment they would tell players to do things that could end a player's online life or something and Grian had to watch as they did that. He grew upset over not being able to help as he had been able to during his period as an Admin. He decided he had enough and broke free, landing in Hermitcraft where he met Mumbo and the rest.
What an absolute incredible love language to the many years of Watcher Grian content and the fandom's adoration of certain story beats and headcanons. This animatic is dripping with inspiration and I'm so blown away.
Okay, let's just recap for a hot second-- ~ 1:06 THAT IS TERRIFYING! I love the imposing feeling from the Watcher on the pillar, contrasted against the shadow on Grian's back and the darkness of the void in the background. The fact that he appears as a faceless ghoul just adds to the dread of the moment. ~ 1:47 Those wings are gorgeous, 10/10 ~ 1:50 Ouch 1:53 Ouch 1:56 and Ouch/Terrifying -- I feel as though someone new to this fandom might get somewhat of an idea of what's going on. It's clear that he had been warped and turned, and painfully so. ~ 2:01 STUNNING! My eyes widened seeing this part the first watch through. For a frame only shown for a couple of seconds, this background was no easy feat and you went for it! I have no idea if you did research on ornate buildings and cathedrals, but I see some hints of Romanesque and Gothic architecture. Whether you meant to or not, that fits pretty well with the fannonization that Watchers are prideful and pompous! The whole things is very well done, but those are my favorite things about it. Keep up the great work!

I was gonna comment on how cool that first shot over Grian's shoulder of the Watcher was, and then the side shot came and I was like woah that's beautiful, and then it was closer and the hand stretched out was just as amazing. And don't even get me started on the long shot of the hallway, I actually had to pause to look at that. There is just too much stuff in this that deserves it's own comment of how beautiful it that I'll reach the 10k character limit. I keep coming back to watch this one. It's probably the best pure Watcher video I've seen -- lots of animatics will have elements, but you just embraced and reveled in the lore and I am *here* for it. Your style is really interesting, too. I don't see too many people mixing almost photo-realistic effects (like the purple flame letters and the rippling purple water) with stylized people. Makes for a very interesting visual. Restricting yourself to just black and purple also really suited this. If there was anything I wanted, it might be slightly longer flashes when Grian becomes a Watcher. Those are some of the best, most chilling frames in the whole thing and we get to see them each for just a fraction of a second. Then again, it motivates me to keep going back to rewatch that part, so eh :P Really, truly well done.
This is STUNNING. I just found this due to your "Hey, Runner!" Animatic, and I'm blown away by BOTH of them, but this one... I just... This. This is (almost exactly) how I imagine the transition from Evo to Hermitcraft for Grian... I... This is STUNNING... It's gorgeous, so much work clearly went into it and it SHOWS... For those of you who really love these things in a written story formatting: Fandom: Post-Evo/Pre-Hermitcraft POV: Grian - 3rd Person The Ender Dragon had just been defeated. Grian was about to follow the other Evolutionists through the portal back into the Overworld when he was intercepted by the mystical beings watching over them: the Watchers. The Watcher Prime was standing on the pillar of the End portal with his hand extended. Without thinking, and too scared to do anything else, Grian took it - and in that moment, he'd become a Watcher. He received their powers, their wings, and a new name: Xelqua. Some time later, the Watcher Prime sent Grian and several other Watchers on what he said was a "reconnaissance mission". But Grian realized the truth all too late. He saw the carnage that the Watchers were causing on an innocent human village. Horrified, he watched as one of them lifted up a large axe, ready to slay yet another human. "No! Don't!" he cried out. But the Watcher didn't listen, and the human's screams were soon silenced. A few minutes later, the Watchers all returned to their realm - all except Grian. He could only stare at the carnage around him, and all he could think about was how big of a mistake he'd made. Everywhere he looked, he saw destruction and despair - and in himself, he saw himself becoming that same monster. Even though he hadn't actually killed anyone, simply because of his association with the Watchers, he had blood on his hands. "I refuse to be a part of this war any longer. I'm done with the Watchers." "Oh, Xelqua," the Watcher Prime said, as several other Watchers began surrounding them. "Do you really think that you could escape from us that easily?" Grian grit his teeth, his Watcher powers beginning to show through. "I'd like to see you try and stop me." And with that, Grian launched the full force of his powers against the Watchers - the beings that had lied to him for months. The skirmish was brief, yet it left more than one Watcher injured. Grian spread his wings and took to the skies, flying as fast as he could with the Watchers in hot pursuit. But as he flew, he began to grow tired. Whether it was adrenaline or overexertion, he didn't know. But he couldn't continue. His eyes fluttered closed, and as he fell through the air, the Watchers gave up pursuit, certain he wouldn't survive the fall. . . . Hours later, he woke up in a forest, miraculously unharmed. He looked around, trying to get his bearings; this had to be some place in the mortal realm. But as he exited the forest, he came across three individuals, whom he would later know as Mumbo, Doc, and Scar. Scar was hiding behind Doc in fear, and Doc seemed skeptical about Grian. But Mumbo only smiled warmly and said five words which changed everything: "Hey there. Welcome to Hermitcraft." And in that moment, Grian knew he'd escaped from the Watchers. I cant not stop watching this, like I see it in my fyp and I must watch it-
I keep coming back to watch this one. It's probably the best pure Watcher video I've seen -- lots of animatics will have elements, but you just embraced and reveled in the lore and I am *here* for it.
Your style is really interesting, too. I don't see too many people mixing almost photo-realistic effects (like the purple flame letters and the rippling purple water) with stylized people. Makes for a very interesting visual. Restricting yourself to just black and purple also really suited this. If there was anything I wanted, it might be slightly longer flashes when Grian becomes a Watcher. Those are some of the best, most chilling frames in the whole thing and we get to see them each for just a fraction of a second. Then again, it motivates me to keep going back to rewatch that part, so eh :P

This is STUNNING. I just found this due to your "Hey, Runner!" Animatic, and I'm blown away by BOTH of them, but this one... I just... This. This is (almost exactly) how I imagine the transition from Evo to Hermitcraft for Grian... I... This is STUNNING... It's gorgeous, so much work clearly went into it and it SHOWS... It tells such a compelling story with every frame, I'm SO impressed!!!

Let me tell you, when this popped up in my recommended, I said OHHHH out loud and RUSHED to watch. It did not disappoint. Keep up the great work, always glad to see more watcher content (I just finished Grian's perspective of Evo for the first time like last week)

For those of you who really love these things in a written story formatting:
Fandom: Post-Evo/Pre-Hermitcraft
POV: Grian - 3rd Person
The Ender Dragon had just been defeated. Grian was about to follow the other Evolutionists through the portal back into the Overworld when he was intercepted by the mystical beings watching over them: the Watchers. The Watcher Prime was standing on the pillar of the End portal with his hand extended. Without thinking, and too scared to do anything else, Grian took it - and in that moment, he'd become a Watcher. He received their powers, their wings, and a new name: Xelqua.
Some time later, the Watcher Prime sent Grian and several other Watchers on what he said was a "reconnaissance mission". But Grian realized the truth all too late. He saw the carnage that the Watchers were causing on an innocent human village. Horrified, he watched as one of them lifted up a large axe, ready to slay yet another human.
"No! Don't!" he cried out. But the Watcher didn't listen, and the human's screams were soon silenced.
A few minutes later, the Watchers all returned to their realm - all except Grian. He could only stare at the carnage around him, and all he could think about was how big of a mistake he'd made. Everywhere he looked, he saw destruction and despair - and in himself, he saw himself becoming that same monster. Even though he hadn't actually killed anyone, simply because of his association with the Watchers, he had blood on his hands.
So while the Watchers were celebrating their victory, Grian flew to his room and cried himself to sleep.
. . .
The next day, he met with the Watcher Prime in the main room, fury all across his face and laced into his every part. "When I joined with you," he said angrily, "I didn't sign up to be a soldier! I didn't sign up to kill people!"
"Oh, my dear Xelqua," the Watcher Prime responded, "we had to keep some bits secret. We can't have you leaving us now-"
"Spare me," Grian interrupted. He knew the real reason the Watchers wanted him to stay - they wanted to stay powerful by keeping control over the former Evo SMP admin. But he couldn't bear having to live with this. "I refuse to be a part of this war any longer. I'm done with the Watchers."
"Oh, Xelqua," the Watcher Prime said, as several other Watchers began surrounding them. "Do you really think that you could escape from us that easily?"
Grian grit his teeth, his Watcher powers beginning to show through. "I'd like to see you try and stop me."
And with that, Grian launched the full force of his powers against the Watchers - the beings that had lied to him for months. The skirmish was brief, yet it left more than one Watcher injured. Grian spread his wings and took to the skies, flying as fast as he could with the Watchers in hot pursuit.
But as he flew, he began to grow tired. Whether it was adrenaline or overexertion, he didn't know. But he couldn't continue. His eyes fluttered closed, and as he fell through the air, the Watchers gave up pursuit, certain he wouldn't survive the fall.
. . .
Hours later, he woke up in a forest, miraculously unharmed. He looked around, trying to get his bearings; this had to be some place in the mortal realm. But as he exited the forest, he came across three individuals, whom he would later know as Mumbo, Doc, and Scar. Scar was hiding behind Doc in fear, and Doc seemed skeptical about Grian. But Mumbo only smiled warmly and said five words which changed everything:
"Hey there. Welcome to Hermitcraft."
And in that moment, Grian knew he'd escaped from the Watchers. He didn't know how long he'd be able to run, or when they'd find him again.
But if, and when, they did, he'd be ready for them.

absolutely amazing animatic! I like how the fandom is all angst Grain content and then on his videos he's a bit of silly goof with ominous in the background now and again. I loved the contrast of the colors with the purple accents now it again, oof lovely! Nice job!
