Excellent Video for an inexpensive / effective door panel my friend!!! The lesson I learned from you was how to cut and wrap the rounded edges!! Love it !
Wow, I’ve been looking at sewing vinyl for my door panels and stumbled across this. Game changer now I can get these panels done using heat, pleated vinyl and leather grain vinyl smooth… perfection!
Where do you buy the staples? I can only find 6mm staples at Bunnings and Spotlight. I think I want 2mm or 3mm staples otherwise I go through the whole board.
you can use a pre made diamond stich in the middle area. i would do that soon as im trying to restore my car interior. any alternative to a board? like a sintra board or metal board?
10mm foam can push things outward. You will need to test to your fittings will be able to compress the foam enough to still work. If this doesn’t work you can cut small sections of foam out. You can also get thinner foam it typically comes in 3mm size increments. 3mm, 6mm, 9mm, 12mm and so on
This was from the rear barn door of my Nissan patrol the door open mechanism is on the side and the window doesn’t open but this technique still works well on doors that do have these,. You will need to allow for these cut outs and position the joins accordingly 👍
Usually on the door I will use 6mm staples but on the back taking strips I will often use 10mm staples as the shorter staples like to pull out on these 👍
@@SamsProjectBench I'm going to try doing this in my BMW E87 then if it's successful I'll do my challenger! Would love to learn how to do some stitching as well 🤔
Yes sewing is a great skill to learn getting the right sewing machine can be a little challenging but it’s worth doing there is only so much interior work you can do without sewing but get in and give it a go it’s very satisfying to see the results of your own work
It’s a spray-able contact adhesive I get through my local upholstery supplier here in Western Australia, they called Daley’s www.daleys.com.au I’ve used a similar product from “shann” www.theshanngroup.com/product/shannbond-adhesiveglue/ Hope this helps
You could possibly lay a Diamond stencil underneath and lay the fabric over top for an embossed look. Depending on what type of head line you could possibly look at diamond tufting/ deep diamond buttoning. I did a Kenworth truck sleeper cab using this method years back but it’s not for the faint hearted. Stitching diamonds is probably your best bet this is usually my preferred method
ALL That Is Required Of Doing This Exact Same Procedure ,n' Getting The Exact Same End Result Are The Tools Shown & Used In Sam's Project Bench Of This "3 part door panel upholstery tutorial "...But Above All ..Most Importantly ......A GRADE 2 EDUCATION..Is ALL That One Really Requires😉😉
If you did not know, you can purchase a spray can with tacking glue similar to the glue you used with your spray gun. I've used it to re-upholster chairs but not door cards, but it should work. The glue can be purchased at any craft store or online. Otherwise, it's a cool idea to use basic upholstering technique to create door card. One question: Why not fill in the defects before recovering the door panel?
I have tried a couple of the cans of glue it’s just my preference to use the spray gun. You could fill in the defects but this was just a demonstration panel never to be used on the car so no need to spend the time on it.
Good video, but like so many other videos, kill the loud music. Many of us watch on large TV's with surround sound and the music volume is way to loud. Besides, it distracts from the reason for the video.
I noticed some lines in the old panel. Are they embossed? Or was it a plastic cover molded design. Do you have any videos on embossing lines or design? I'd be interested in those tutorials.
The old cover had welded embossed lines. These are put in with a high frequency welder these are specialty equipment used to weld PVC based materials and are not common in the diy environment. I haven’t done any tutorials on this specifically my preferred method is to sew lines into the material with the foam already glued to the materials embossing is not always practical due to the amount of work and time required but if a certain look is required it can be done otherwise it usually gets sewn or a back taking method is used I have some door trims to do on my Nissan patrol coming up I should be able go into further depth in video once into the process
It always holds better if you can pull the materials around and staple them on the back there are some circumstances where you can get away without stapling behind but it is typically my preference to staple them on the back 👍
Brilliant video but that bloody racket in the background 🤷♂️ I’m afraid will put people off watching to the end. But thank you for explaining in great detail 👍
Love the Video, but not so much your choice in music, but hey, thanks for the Edumacation ! lol maybe try Bostons "Hitch a Ride" to go with the Great Video.........
Quya Dennis I used a marine blue vinyl that’s can be sauced from Nolan’s here in Australia I also used black automotive vinyl and glue that can be sauced from Daley Upholstery supplies and the foam is from “novatex international” hope this helps
the voice is gret the shit noise is bad leav out the shit noise it is a pain to try and decide whenr we must turn off the sound, because the noise is so bad
The foam at the top did you cut it even with the board or did you leave about a quarter of a inch foam and then wrap it around to the back?? Thank you. New subscriber!!

Your welcome, I’m glad you liked it 👍 thanks for watching
Thanks for the video. I'm away to try and cover my VW camper panels using this technique.
Ali F awesome I’m glad the video has helped, I’d love to hear how you go. Good luck 👍
Doing it this way, what's the best way to get the cutouts for speakers and door handles.
I like your lecture Boss man .

I get my gear from Daley’s upholstery supplies www.daleys.com.au/
They sell direct to public but only open week days
Great video! I'll be giving it a go on my ghia
Yes definitely give it a go it’s a handy technique hope it goes well 👍
Really Really Really Nice My Man!
thank you 👍

good info for sure. But... that music was LOUD! or you need to speak up a lot.
Just a quick question??
Won’t the 10mm foam push all the fittings out too , as my doors don’t have it !!
TIA

Your welcome 👍
What size foam you used?
Nice nice I gotta give it a try ( staples zise? )
I use 6mm staples
That’s incredible.
Thank you 🙏
observation: I don't have kid noise for the background. I do have a border Collie but he just licks himself, no barking. Can I still try this?
Haha I’m sure it will be fine to try 👍
Thanks for a great video
Really interesting and informative, Ruined by music? choice and volume!
must have electric windows an no way to open the the door from the inside?
This was from the rear barn door of my Nissan patrol the door open mechanism is on the side and the window doesn’t open but this technique still works well on doors that do have these,. You will need to allow for these cut outs and position the joins accordingly 👍
turned out awesome what length are the staples you used
