I disagree on one thing, soundtrack is freaking amazing in this game. Most of people who I know who played this, agree too. Something wrong with music taste must be on your end, lol. Other than that, good review.

Some of the soundtrack is great, some is meh. I kinda wish though there was more variation in the way the music changes because I get kinda tired of the same old pirate music over and over again at each pirate raid.
The only thing I really find i disagree with is about the soundtrack. I absolutely love the soundtrack of SINS and quite often find myself turning off the soundtrack of other games (such as Civ V) and play the SINS soundtrack off of Spotify in the background. Otherwise, this is a great overview of the game! Well done!
Rebellion still holds up today. Still updated, still has mods, they realised an HD graphics pack. Love this game. I also think I have yet to complete a game since I usually pick the multi-hundred system maps.
Gotta say I disagree on the soundtrack aspect, the soundtracks from sins are absolutely stellar in my opinion. Otherwise it's good to see content on this game, one of my all time favorite games, very underrated in my opinion.
@@Zade_95 Yeah... In 10 way matches I tended to set the Fleet Size to Small just to ease the burden on the poor engine. It also keeps things a bit more tactical, since defensive structures serve a greater purpose with smaller fleets to contend against.
I just want to put in a good word for the soundtrack. The opening theme is bloody fantastic because it jumps from each of the different race's themes, with the choral elements for the Advent, the drums for the TEC and the strings for the Vasarri. Each race's themes are unique to them as well. I was very surprised by your analysis of the soundtrack as one of the highlights of playing the game was listening to the soundtrack, but maybe that's just me.

Not crazy serious, but saw some dev comments around the web like steam page / forums. Plus ironclads last game is done and dusted for a wee while now, so I'm optimistic!
After seeing this I have realized that you really need to check out Sword of the Stars. basically a bit larger scale than SOE, fleet engagments have fewer ships, but each ship class is completely customized by the player down to individual gun batteries, each race plays completely different from Humans with Nodelines that allow for super fast FTL but only along certain routes while other races have something closer to Star Trek warp to even a race that travels every sublight but can setup teleportation gates and move entire fleets around their territory instantly.
Good retrospective. Purchased this when it was originally in beta, the games evolved over time. The only thing I would have loved to have seen is a good single player campaign - although not needed - it would have completed the picture. Anyhow, this is now definitely on the must play list this weekend. :)
Have to disagree about the sound. I always got the impression that the sound was supposed to be the way it was because you were hearing it over some sort of communications system. Like an added static effect.
Really the biggest surprise for me with this game was when they released Outlaw Sectors and a new balancing patch in 2016 (three years after their last DLC). I was certain no patch would drop but it's great to see developers taking care of their game that many years after release. (RIP Truce amongst Rogues though). And recently they released another smaller DLC + the ability to disable super weapons and disable AI surrender and I think that's pretty neat. Really the only downside is the technical side. It seems that in longer matches, there's a slim possibility for the game to crash. Although I can't fix that happening, luckily it is easily possible to change the autosave duration to just one minute. So whenever it crashes while playing with friends, not much will be lost at all.
Yeah i know right, it's super awesome! Kinda weird too, as you'd think these DLCs wouldn't take much development time. I like to think they're drumming up hype for a sequel!
I like the way your title card is clearly pronouncing itself as a "Retrospective Analysis" than your atypical "VIdeo game review". I won't mention any names, but there are YT content creators that often release review vids with an astounding amount of audience while completely missing the point why it is called a 'review' in the first place. They meander from topic, and sometimes talk more about the elements of its gameplay (which to be clear, there is completely nothing wrong abt it!) than trying to convey their opinions, and often tend to end up unintentionally misleading their audiences. Thanks for typing all this out - it really means a lot! I'm glad you liked what I'm doing and that you found it interesting! I actually split these videos off into two separate styles now as I felt I couldn't give enough time to all the mechanics and details in a sub 20 minute video. So those shorter ones have now become 'Should you game in 2019?" and I've made a longer retrospective series that are all aiming to be 25-45 minutes long. I released my first one recently on Metro 2033 - if you've got time I'd love to hear what your thoughts about it! Again, thanks again for the write up - hope you enjoy the future content!
Well, this IS Commander Shepard's favorite game on steam XD I like the soundtrack, It does get repetitive, but the overall quality of the music is good. I usually throw on some star wars music (5,4,6,1, 3.5, 3,2,7) if I need a change.
Dam I need to do another video of Mass Effect lol. Yeah I mean I definitely think the soundtrack is good, just does get repetitive for me. Star Wars tunes are a great idea!
Damn this game exploded with the humble bundle and current deal on steam with the new surprise DLC. Makes me happy to see a game I bought day 1 back in 2012 still able to draw people in and still getting support from Stardock. Now make a sequel already.
Yeah I know right. They definitely did me a favour exposure wise! It makes you think - having all these in close succession to drum up interest maybe.... fingers crossed!
Suprised DLC indeed, I have like 300 hours in it and i just noticed that dlc, thanks. Been playing too much stellaris honestly. This isn't the first time though with suprised DLC.
I was sifting and sifting and sifting through STEAM for any Game less than 10 bucks. I wanted a Space Colony or Strategy Game, or something like Nobunaga's Ambition, or a City Sim building Game. It was either this game or Children of the Nile. I had to go with this since it was 70% off, going for 6 bucks. Watched some reviews and I was SOLD. I love playing Starfleet Command: Gold Edition, but I was getting tired of it. I wanted something with a little more substance, not just combat. Still haven't played the game since it's downloading, but I am SUPER excited. Thank you for the Review. :D
I may disagree on music part - it my be just me but whenever i hear the battle THC theme i really feel uplifted and so on. It's not jaw dropping but still - it get's thhe job done. :3
the micro aspect of this game is phenomenal. and the galactic force massing which can also be micro'ed (skill base of the player) it plays exceptionally well. SoaSE is that one game you wished had the funding to be made even bigger.
They’ve been releasing dlc quite consistently, and the descriptions make me wonder if that “enemy” the Vasari refer to in lore will be released in one of the packs, or even in a new game in the series.
Yeah it's interesting how that's happening. I'd love to see a Sins2 with that 'enemy' and some sort of uneasy alliance between branches of the existing factions!
Still amazing after all these years. Scratches my itch for strategy better than Stellaris or GalCIv. Just picked up some of the newer expansions. Can't wait for a sequel and/or true update to be released!
While the ship classes of each faction are the same especially capital ships and support cruisers are very unique with very different roles. For example while all factions have a carrier class capital ship spawning fighters the Advent one has an area of effect anti strike craft ability and a weapon buff ability for the fleet while the vasari carrier has an area of effect repair ability and can make functional copies of ships later in the game. The Tec carrier can spawn missile platforms and cripple the economy on an enemy planet both of which are good especially early on and later it can significantly improve production on friendly planets.
I'm just surprised that the game was made for so little. Been playing since it came out. Never uninstalled, it always seems to call me back every so often.
Quick games are about 6-7 hours, but I had a game last for a whole week of 5-7 hour sessions. It was me and 3 friends against like 2 teams of 3 AI. I was TEC Loyalists with a buddy, we locked down our Stars with 2 Starbases each, and were in the second wave of invasions, setting up forward Starbases in enemy territory with Shipyards and repair ships. We barely won, with two of us dying to the last AI, and it was the two Turtles left for us.
Some games just get ridiculous in their length lul. Part of the reason I love it though! That sounds awesome! If you are into that kinda game, playing Star Trek Armada 3 (mod for Sins) with a few friends vsing one HARD Borg ai is fun!
i'm sad there's no SoSE 2 because the game is actually AWESOME! if you've ever taken the time to create a map you can literally make a map with 2000+ suns that can have an infinite number of planets and the game engine actually runs this, although it stresses the shit out of your CPU and RAM. I made a map with 200 suns and made the travel time between planets to be as long as 20 minutes and it was interesting to play it, actually. Still have my SoSE installed and i ocasionally play it and im not planning on removing it at all. It's a lovely game and a very unique RTS. The sound is good and quite feets the game actually. The idea of the enthusiasm behid the voices of the Advent is that they're this phanatical psychic/mental-powered race. Their planetary bombardment ships actually sends psychic waves to the planet you want them to bombard creating chaos and mental breakdown of the planet's population causing it to kill itself. Unlike the other 2 races which simply anihilate the entire surface of the planet with nuclear bombs and giant lazer beams.
HAhahaha yeah we had this hilarious time when my friend made a map and made it way to big by accident, and the planet jumps took ages. I don't think Sins uses multiple CPU cores well (or at all) which it why it slows down even on newer systems. That makes sense for the voices, they still sound funny though :P
The only problem I have with sins is the late game or on large maps where the game just slows to a crawl because it dosent use all or my rigs resources
To be fair, I only play this game with mods. While the base faction do look interesting, having no story can't let me have any attachment to them, thus making me unable to play with them. Plus Sins have a lot of good mods making playing the game with mods a blast.
Sins Rebellion the only game on my steam library which has broken the 1000+ hour mark, yes it's that good. iv'e played every RTS game you can possible think of. All command and conquers, starcraft 1 and 2, every total war (which is close to 1000 hours on each), company of heros 1 and 2 + all the DLC, etc etc. Sins of a solar empire rebellion beats them all with no question. The game with mods like whats mentioned in the video make it even better. Halo is good but not finished yet, Star wars is decent, Star trek being the best one. Infact its that good a mod it feels like a new game, better graphics than the orginal, cool factions to play as like the borg, even somehow added heros like captain Picard and jeanway. Mods is awsome and the base game is awsome too, yet to play a better RTS I pray they make a new sins 2. Iron clads last game Ashes was pretty decent but still pales in comparison to sins.
Sins Faction Ships Fact: Vasari ships focus more on Armour and Health, Advent Focuses more on Shielding and Anti-Matter(The Advent ships really has the greatest capital ship skills), While the TEC focuses more on Balance between the three(Health, Armour, Anti-Matter)
Wow, some of those achievements are a lot harder on the newer iteration of the game. I had them all in the Trinity days but didn't bother to get them again in Rebellion.
I'd definitely hop on the hype train of a Sins of a Solar Empire 2, but I feel there isn't much they could add. Maybe a a big diplomacy overhaul could be nice, fine tune starfighters and bombers to make them do dogfights and what not like Empire at War. Definitely some things can be done, and using a more powerful engine could be a treat but I feel there isn't much left to do with this game.
Yeah I'd be interested to see what could be done to improve it. Honestly at this point just better graphics, new units, and refined mechanics would probably be enough! and better performance
I remember playing this game for the first time just foolin around playin sandboxy without enemies in the hopes of reviewing upgrades and gettin' a feel for the game. Expecting some chill, rather fast paced action ala C&C Generals I nearly fell asleep doing the tech trees 3 times over with most of that tech being the same. It was at this moment Sins made me realise I hate everlasting grand strategy games. No offense to those who like it; for me it's on par with Civ and Heroes snorefests; but at least those two due to their turnbased nature are relaxing.
Honestly, I only really played this game with Armada III. The base game failed to make me care for it's factions, and that's a requirement for me. These days, I find that Stellaris (although it is admittedly in a bad state right now when it comes to AI and Performance) hits many of the notes Sins hits much better.
@@Zade_95 it and other mods is why Ironclad modified the game. orignally the engine couldn't handle the more detailed ships. there was a 2 gb limit. there was a work around that modders came up with that Ironclad just added in automatically so the work around was nolonger needed
since you mentioned mods, since I hear that game compared to stelalris pretty often, I'd like to know how it compares in terms of the scale of the mods.
If there Could be a Sins 2.I wish it could add a campaing mod. But,Please read this it seems great.Just imagine this.A sins of a Solar Empire 2 with a huge diferent. For example. Both Vasary,Union and Coalition are struggling in a final battle which will bring them to extinction and all of a Sudden appears the worst enemy of the Vasary empire. The one who nobody never know about its existence. Finally begins a new final and ultimate war.Of Course Vasary,Union an coalition shall fight togheter in order to eliminate our new threat. What do you think

I like the soundtrack, It does get repetitive, but the overall quality of the music is good.
Great Vid! I agree, one of the greatest games of all time! And they just announced another DLC! 😍
Thanks! Yeah that came outta nowhere! Interested to see what it's like
Damn this game exploded with the humble bundle and current deal on steam with the new surprise DLC.
I have 2000 hours in rebellion
Respect!
That's because you have good taste in games! Happy gaming.
the micro aspect of this game is phenomenal. and the galactic force massing which can also be micro'ed (skill base of the player) it plays exceptionally well. SoaSE is that one game you wished had the funding to be made even bigger.
Yeah I agree! Hopefully we'll see a new entry in the series someday with more to experience!
lol "Goes on sale relatively often"... It's free today through the 19th (Dec 2018); "DLC to date is..." Now including Minor Factions! Great Review!
Yeah I know right! Timing 👌 Thanks for watching!
THANK FOR THE VIDEO!! now this helps me hook in the game!
Thanks for watching! Enjoy!
Well done, great video, just what I was looking for.
Thanks bro, appreciate it!
Me too!
I know right, crazy how good it is for the budget that it got
The "Maelstrom" mod elevate this game to new levels, I desperately need SIns2 that being said like many others.
@@Zade_95 we love it tho. Started a game like 3 hours before a friend had to work, didn't stop till his boss called asking if he was dead
i'm sad there's no SoSE 2 because the game is actually AWESOME! if you've ever taken the time to create a map you can literally make a map with 2000+ suns that can have an infinite number of planets and the game engine actually runs this, although it stresses the shit out of your CPU and RAM.
Same, this is one of those RTS games I easily come back to. Try American Conquest as well or the cossacks series.
I will add to slew of disagreement to your opinion on the soundtrack. RTS's almost always have excellent soundtracks and Sins is no exception here.
Fair enough! Everyone has their own opinion, but it just doesn't do much for me! Maybe I've just heard it too much!
haha. I searched my stream library and found this game. Didnt even know I had it lol
Tha audio leaves to be desired? are ya' serious? Have you listened to the soundtrack? It's beautiful xD
I may have undersold it a bit...
@@Zade_95 Understatement of the century. 😂
😂
The only problem I have with sins is the late game or on large maps where the game just slows to a crawl because it dosent use all or my rigs resources
Yeah, Sins loves strong cpu cores but only uses one. Lol
@@Zade_95 you can increase that i forgot the programm but it is needed for some mods and other increase it by their own

This is free on Steam right now! ✌️
I must agree this game is best RTS strategy space game what i played ....
really wish they add more content
While I'm always down for more Sins, I think the amount in the game is good, but it does require you to make a bit of your own fun sometimes :p
This game is downright fucking amazing. One of the few games I maxed out the Steam badge for, that's how much I love it.
My man!
Free on steam currently! we need a sins 2 like yesterday!
Tell me about it!
I absolutely love the music... but... to each their own.
I do like it, it just didn't stick with me as much as others. It's very game appropriate tho
To be fair, I only play this game with mods. While the base faction do look interesting, having no story can't let me have any attachment to them, thus making me unable to play with them. Plus Sins have a lot of good mods making playing the game with mods a blast.
Fair enough. Sins has some great mods out there! The core is very versatile
Ah yes, sitting down to play a quick game of sins with a friend. Max map size, AI count, a mere 2 weeks and it's done.
Yeah dude. Just a quick one!
There is a new dlc on steam released on 12/17/18 called Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion - Minor Factions DLC
Get on it!
I put the laughter in Slaughter!
Thank you, resident TEC Capital
This is a hidden master piece
It's quality alright
i love this game, i spent hundreds of hours playing it when it first came out. But if i can only recommend one rts space sim... its Stellaris.
Honestly I couldn't get into Stellaris after Sins Just felt to slow! I've heard great things from people who love that genre though
I've put so many hours into this game. So many hours of releasing the nanites.
Can never have too many hours in Sins!
Such a worth it subscription to your channel
I was always disappointed there wasn't any campaign or story for it, it seemed so promising. Loved the game though including the ost.
Never though about it - but that makes sense!
Still playing it...still loving it!
Looking at my library "you have played 6329 hours..." last played 2/11/2019 you have unlocked 68/68 (100%)
R E S P E C T
you know what it means to me
Wow, some of those achievements are a lot harder on the newer iteration of the game.
Free on steam until 12/19/18
THANKS MATE
I remember playing this game for the first time just foolin around playin sandboxy without enemies in the hopes of reviewing upgrades and gettin' a feel for the game.
Expecting some chill, rather fast paced action ala C&C Generals I nearly fell asleep doing the tech trees 3 times over with most of that tech being the same.
It was at this moment Sins made me realise I hate everlasting grand strategy games. No offense to those who like it; for me it's on par with Civ and Heroes snorefests; but at least those two due to their turnbased nature are relaxing.
Fair enough, it's not for everyone. I'm not a fan of full 4X games, but for me Sins hits that perfect balance :)
Honestly, I only really played this game with Armada III. The base game failed to make me care for it's factions, and that's a requirement for me.
These days, I find that Stellaris (although it is admittedly in a bad state right now when it comes to AI and Performance) hits many of the notes Sins hits much better.
Mmm Armada 3 is so good, it legit astounds me with its quality every time I play it!
@@Zade_95 it and other mods is why Ironclad modified the game. orignally the engine couldn't handle the more detailed ships. there was a 2 gb limit. there was a work around that modders came up with that Ironclad just added in automatically so the work around was nolonger needed
This game was given away for free on Humble Bundle.

They keep adding stuff to this game, amazing.
I know right. New DLC (albiet small) added years after release. Sins2 maybe??
First thoughts on the introduction:
So Rebellion to Sins is like Forged Alliance to SupCom, noice.
Sins of a Solar Empire is... comprehensibly smart.
I still play sins and still love this game... nothing in the market like this
I think Sins is one of the last games I bought that I actually got a hard copy of.
What's a hard copy? :P
since you mentioned mods, since I hear that game compared to stelalris pretty often, I'd like to know how it compares in terms of the scale of the mods.
It is currently on sale in Steam for 75% off, ($9.99) until Nov. 19th, 2018
Its completely free on humble bundle

If there Could be a Sins 2.I wish it could add a campaing mod. But,Please read this it seems great.Just imagine this.A sins of a Solar Empire 2 with a huge diferent. For example. Both Vasary,Union and Coalition are struggling in a final battle which will bring them to extinction and all of a Sudden appears the worst enemy of the Vasary empire. The one who nobody never know about its existence. Finally begins a new final and ultimate war.Of Course Vasary,Union an coalition shall fight togheter in order to eliminate our new threat. What do you think
I really want to wake up and find a Sins 2 announcement. I think it's about time a proper sequel is made.
