What if I told you that Panera is deceiving you, Loyal Theorists? No, not because of their tasty bread bowls or mac & cheese. But because of their CHARGED Lemonades! Absolutely they need to advertise this better. I ordered one the other day, not even realizing it was a “charged lemonade”. I thought it was a flavored lemonade. I am 13 weeks pregnant, the recommended daily max of caffeine during pregnancy is 200mg. Thankfully when the cashier asked if I wanted half or full it threw me off, and I saw it was charged and looked it up in time, but I could have easily missed it and consumed an unsafe amount of caffeine.

Just saw that another person died from this in October 2023. MatPat, thanks so much for making me aware of this issue. You are actually saving lives. I worked as a preschool teacher, and I tell parents all the time now that these drinks are NOT safe for their kids… my coworker said she would have probably let her child drink it if she had not heard from me that it was dangerous. You probably saved several lives, AT LEAST, by making this video. Thank you so so much

The sugar content alone is dangerous..parents really have no idea what they are feeding their kids which is a bigger issue in general. It should be common sense that caffeine isn't good for kids in any quantity and small children don't need any added sugar in their diet either honestly.

As a Panera employee I drank our new lemonades like 2 days in a row and had the worst and most severe panic attacks I've had in my life and just overall increased anxiety. I now know high caffeine makes my anxiety worse I've simply never exposed myself to THIS much caffeine especially since all it takes is ONE charged lemonade for it to be too much for me :) not to mention customers are getting refills of this stuff.

It's funny how it's advertised on door dash but not in the restaurant. I ordered a meal with the charged lemonade and on the door dash app it said "this drink has as much caffeine as our dark roast coffee" but when I went into Panera to pick it up there was no advertisements saying the lemonade was that heavily caffeinated. In fact 2 had signs saying sugar free but not a single sign about it being about as caffeinated as a tall Red Bull. I could easily see how people with disabilities and heart conditions could end up drinking this by mistake. Panera definitely needs to lose the wrongful death lawsuits because those deaths were definitely their fault because of lack of advertising.

Huge fan of lemonade here (I'm aware that's a weird sentence.) I am on the debate team at my school and we have a tradition of getting panera before or after our debate trips. Earlier this school year, we went and I was quite thirsty. So, being a lemonade fan, I decided that the strawberry lemonade looked so good. So, I drank a cup. Then another. Then another. Then half of another. We went and did our debate and I was feeling on top of the world but almost panicky. On the bus ride back, I felt like I was dying. As a caffeine addict, I'd say one cup throughout the day would be ok for most others in the same situation. However, I would not suggest drinking almost 4.

The fact that both MatPat & Panera mention Dark Roast coffee multiple times when it's the roast with the LEAST caffeine really says it all on how little caffeine in understood in the collective conscience.
Also, Panera allows sells that lemonade to-go in half gallon bottles. I almost bought one this week, but passed since it was ~$11.
Update: Since this comment is gaining a lot a traction I think it's worth highlighting Kyle_P's comment on how this is actually a double misconception. The TL;DR is coffee beans puff up and become quite airy the more they're roasted. An easier visual might be popcorn, but since there's no shell it's gradual. A scoop of dark roast is considerably less dense than a lighter one and in turn less bean material overall, thus the coffee content as a whole, not just the caffeine, is less.

I know that some lemonade brands are thinking about bringing UK caffeinated versions.
Why do sugary and fruits beverages need caffeine anyway. Why do you need to change your heart and brain activity with a drug every time you have a nice beverage.
I understand that you get generations are moving away from alcohol but that doesn't mean we have to swap a neuro depressant for a neurostimulant and act like that's totally reasonable.
I think we need to have more things like regular lemonade and orangeade and decaf soft drinks. If I want caffeine I'll go have some tea.
Many people don't think water, if they're having caffeinated soft drinks most if the day. Maybe a caffeinated pre work out before gym. That will all add up.
Caffeine also has a relatively long half life so it stays in your system for a long time.
And then imagine in a weekend and you go out and have alcoholic beverages - then you just end up with high levels of a neurostimulant and a neurodeoresswnt competing. This will wreak havoc on cardiac health.

I wouldn't call it sneaking. Most of the advertising and the containers that hold the charged drinks have it labeled on the amount. It's a bit lazy to not be more focused on it but it's not necessarily on the company if they told people who are interested in the product every step of the way that it has caffeine besides putting caffeine in the product name. Soda brands would probably be a bigger culprit of "sneaking" since you have to actively look at the ingredient label to know if anything but it's still there on the bottle or can usually.

      @GuiSmith ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@felipecastanha9161 this is an interesting complexity you probably could experience for yourself with enough caffeine or stimulants, though I wouldn’t recommend trying.
I also have ADHD and I also get hyperactive focus from stimulants. I’m on literally the prescription stimulant to focus day to day. Caffeine is too potent, especially with my meds, and gives me headaches, but it also relaxes me if I have enough at once. In my early teens, it took about one personal size plastic bottle of Mountain Dew to induce drowsiness. My understanding is that you have the pathways that require attention attended to by the stimulant, so you can get things done. But, after those are saturated, the pathways to get things done are the next to be saturated. Eventually I stop being able to do anything, and then my inability to sleep normally catches up with me and I crash. Having everything be nice and quiet in my brain is nice… until I wake up half an hour later with a splitting headache, but that’s a me problem.
That’s the best way I can describe how caffeine does that. It’s really all about quieting things down enough that you get bored or sleeplessness catches up with you.

I am really sensitive to caffeine and so I check and double check any beverage I drink. I know that restaurant workers get a little miffed when I ask if they really did give me decaf, but I don't like feeling like I am having a heart attack or stroke. If I even think they gave me the wrong order I have to toss it. It is also extremely difficult to find decaffeinated beverages at most restaurants, which means half the time I can't even drink any thing they serve except water.

But even she got heart palpitations and had an anxiety attack! That's insane! I take a fairly high dose of ADHD meds and have to be careful with how much caffeine I consume because of it. For those that don't know, ADHD meds target the same area of the brain as caffeine, which is why unmedicated ADHD people tend to function better while on caffeine. If I drank these without realizing just how much caffeine was in them, I very well could have some SEVERE side effects. Having something that potentially dangerous just.... THERE is kinda scary.

I remember seeing a tiktok where someone in the comments mentioned their Panera moved the charged lemonades behind the counter to limit refills, not cause of the drink costs but because people were doing what Sarah was doing and drinking 3+ in a sitting, not knowing how much they were consuming, and that was how I learned they were caffeinated at all. I think selling them is fine but like they either need to be counter restricted to enforce the serving size or there needs to be a more obvious warning placed on the drinks. They're technically not sneaking it in since they list the caffeine amount but like how many people have no clue HOW caffeinated they really are? Three times the amount of caffeine as what you find in a monster energy drink and they only noticeable distinction from the other lemonades Panera sells is that they have Charged in the name...

So, I was at Panera with my dad, and we came across the strawberry mint lemonade. It was around 9:00 PM and I was practically falling asleep in the car if I remember correctly. Anyways, he got it for me thinking nothing of it since it’s a strawberry lemonade, which is usually fine. While I’m drinking it, I feel slightly energized. I brush it off and blame it on the TV, since I watch TV while eating. I also feel a odd pain in my leg. Fast forward to around 11:00 PM to 2:00 AM. I’m on my way to sleep, when the pain in my leg returns. I feel springy and energetic, so I tell my dad. Usually at this time, I’d be surrendering to sleep, but this time no. I tell my dad, and he checks the ingredients. He is subtly pissed off as he tells me that it’s caffeinated. Both me and him agree I’m too young for it as I try to fall asleep. I ended up staying up super late and my body was in pain. This is an experience I’ve had. Just wanted to mention it. Main focus: Don’t drink it if you’re still growing, or just in general. Don’t.

It's true (kinda) depending on what size you get, but if you get the biggest size it's way more (the largest coffee is similar amount to the small lemonade size). I've also noticed there are a couple of other drinks that have a high amount of caffeine as well other than these lemonades and coffees at Panera. So at this point I'm thinking the lowest caffeine drinks they have are the soda, or tea.

As an ex Panera employee- Ive always been a little bit skeptical about the charges lemonades. For some context: I quit my job as a cashier/barista/baker in March of this year because the work environment was just too nasty. I had been there for almost two years. I feel as if I have reason to give some dirt on this establishment. When they introduced the charged lemonades, at first I thought nothing of it and that it was just only slightly caffeinated. They literally put it right next to the sodas and the other bubbler drinks. Of course, knowing it was caffeinated I never recommended that kids try it. They made these “lemonades” look just like the other teas and other bubbler drinks. And so that’s why I think I would still see children as young as like- 6 sitting down with their families and drinking these. They make the colors look all fun and bright and pretty too which doesn’t help when kids are easily attracted to bright colors. They probably just think it’s juice and nothing more of it. While it is important that parents look at the labels they make it almost impossible to see the caffeine amount and really only show the calorie count. At the Panera I worked at, they eventually moved the 3 bubblers with these lemonades to the barista counter and we’d actually have to get these for guests ourselves. Maybe this was to make it known that these are caffeinated drinks but GOOD GOD the amount of caffeine in these is higher than ANYTHING we’d be making behind that counter. I would also like to add that out of my time working there, and when the charged lemonades were available- not ONCE did I ever actually witness them making these drinks. They would always just be filled up and never run out. It was bizarre.

Could of just made it like, this is probably irresponsible, here's why, not how tricky having signs in front of you that your going to ignore because reasons...
Not everyone pays attention, but signs exist for a reason... like the closed sign i try and hang in the widow on the entry door... only to be beckoned over by someone still trying to buy stuff.
Caffeine is what it is, people that missed that train for whatever reason, hopefully can be brought up to speed. If you plan on putting stuff in your body, you should generally try and pay attention to what it is. This bottle says sprite.. but it smelt like raw sewage, ah, its says sprite so I'm gonna drink it..
Be mindful, read labels, think a bit with your actions, and always remember accidents happen. Just because it should be a certain way doesn't mean it can't have issues. Use your perception and critical thinking, don't just "oh well" a situation without accepting your okay with what happens.
Alright, late night rambling comment done, fall asleep time!
If we need to make Panera Bread a bad guy, there are a lot of other ways other than yelling at them for "tricking" us with a caffeinated lemonade that has a sign hanging in extreme sight stating the amount of caffeine in said drink.

Yeah, I can back this up. At our meeting when these "lemonades" were released, we were actually told to let parents know that their kids couldn't have any. So while we are technically abiding by the law, I will bring this up with my GM when I see him next. Hopefully it sticks.
    Signed, a Panera dishwasher.

December 2023 another person has just died from cardiac arrest after having 3 lemonades. Panera denied their drink had anything to do with it. SMH Matt it’s unfortunate how right you have been.

worked at panera when these first came out, anyone was allowed to have these, no prior warning. i would sometimes have to stop parents and let them know that their kid is about to drink heart failure

Thank you for informing people of the risks of over consumption of caffeine. I remember talking to a teenager who was SUPER jittery to the point where it was concerning me. He explained to me while we were talking that he had drank two big energy drinks in two hours. I then politely said to be careful because caffeine overdose is a real thing. We really don't think about what it can do to us because it is really everywhere in America, but it is something we should be aware of.

      @tylerweatherby7131 ปีที่แล้ว

Caffeine overdoses happen at about 10 grams of caffeine , that's about 62.5 regular sized monsters that you need to drink without your liver or kidneys processing the caffeine, suffice to say it's really hard to overdose on caffeine, you'd be more likely to suffer cardiac arrest before you manage to overdose on caffeine

Hey Panera employee here... Please enjoy this actual line of dialogue that happened because of corporate's inability to properly label their beverages...
Me: would you like a drink with that?
ELDERLY customer: yes I'd like to try one of those charged lemonades
Me: certainly, but I do want to warn you those are highly caffeinated...
EC: Oh don't worry I have sweet tea every night before I go to bed and the caffeine in that doesn't bother me.
Me: ma'am I don't think you understand, the regular has over 200 mg of caffeine... This is the kind of stuff that college students used to pull all-nighters studying for finals.
    Ec: ....
    Me: 😅
    Ec: it's just lemonade though?
    Me: highly caffeinated lemonade, yes.
Ec: I think I'll have an iced tea
Me: excellent choice ma'am will this be for here to go?

Media needs to take videos like this seriously. This came out 11 months ago and there have been 2 deaths and a lawsuit that is very new. If more people had written or spoke on TV or newspapers or journals about this then all this stuff could have been prevented sooner.

I've been a Sips Club member for over a year (when I signed up with a 90 day trial, it was MyPanera Coffee and was good only on hot coffee and tea). I remember when they changed it to include cold drinks and I started getting emails about the Charged Lemonades. They never appealed to me because I never cared for sweet drinks. Good thing, as I was warned that I'm at risk for diabetes and have borderline hypertension. Getting old sucks. 😆 I just stick with the iced coffee, unsweetened iced tea, or hot coffee.

Makes me wonder what was in those Pina Colada Freezes years ago at Taco Bell. I remember literally walking for 2 hours to buy a couple, multiple times a week. I was joking they had cocaine in them to everyone I knew.
About had a meltdown when they stopped making them and I still get a rush just thinking about them.

Very likely that those had caffeine too. From what I could tell, all their Freezes do/did.

Pepsi owns Taco bell and pepsi is the caffine pusher. Mountain Dew has the most caffine of any regular soft drink. A;ll other companies that lwnonline s[rite/7 u[ have no caffine but Seirrra mist has some caffine. Mountain has more caffine than surge energy drink.

Being someone that caffeine sent me to the hospital. I can definitely say caffeine if not consumed moderately, can be a horrifying experience. I can’t imagine what could have happened to me, if I wasn’t as healthy as i am.
Even if I wasn’t going to die, I definitely felt like it. My body was shutting down. Making me terrified to go to sleep.

As someone who also once had to go to the hospital for too much caffeine- I feel that. It was such an awful feeling and I was so tired but so scared of going to sleep. It’s absolutely horrifying to see all these Panera workers commenting saying that “as soon as they found out, they told everyone”, implying Panera has not been upfront at all with anyone about how dangerous these lemonades are.

She didn't claim it was illegal, she said it SHOULD be illegal, and I agree with her.
Drinks that have dangerous amounts of chemical in them like caffeine should be carefully labelled and marketed.

I take the 10 seconds to look up what is in the thing im putting in my body, you know, like an adult that isnt a lazy sack that wants to find drama anywhere I can to amuse my stunted mind.

1:42 …I hope she’s ok. I thought she was just angry, but if there is that much caffeine in it (I just started watching this, so I don’t know the conclusion), then I hope she’s ok. Even if she isn’t dying, I’ve had way too much caffeine before, and it is NOT a good feeling. I hope others who were drinking that, and not expecting that level of caffeine, I hope they were ok, cause having too much caffeine, especially when you don’t expect it, it can be REALLY scary
