In WW2, when the Americans liberated the concentration camp "Saint-Cyprien", located in France. The American troops wanted to feed the newly freed Camp Prisoners because they have been starving.
Without knowing what would happen if they would feed them heavy food, literally seconds after liberating them. The soldiers, thinking it was the right thing, started giving the Prisoners Apples, Sandwiches, and even Chocolates.
Leading to a lot of Prisoners dying.
After that incident, the Science team gave out an order to not feed the prisoners in the camps and to let the Medical Staff feed them first.
It was mostly a slow input of light soup.

There’s a story on TH-cam about a crew of Japanese sailors who shipwrecked on an island and went a few weeks without food. They were eventually rescued by an American ship and the captain was extremely strict with what the starving crew ate. Making sure they only ate small amounts of soup. Ship captains in the 1800’s clearly knew how to deal with starvation. And it goes to show how easily knowledge can be lost.

I mean, in a lot of the western world we don't deal with refeeding syndrome levels of starvation in everyday life. People living in remote areas or with an inconsistency food supply probably have a better grasp on the concept, they just also aren't the ones on the internet talking about refeeding

That's because it was a major concern for hundreds of years before preserved foods were invented.
Ship captains had to balance how much food they needed to take to feed the entire crew for a voyage that could take months with how many goods they could store in their holds. I mean, the good pay for the voyage, so... If the captain got greedy or the voyage was delayed for too long, there was a big concern that food and fresh water would run out. Often at a certain point, a captain had to call for rationing.
This is one reason stowaways were a big deal, as well, not only are they extra unaccounted for mouth/s to feed, but it might take a minute for the crew to realize food has gone missing, throwing off the portions and could also lead to rationing. If the captain is generous enough to take pity on the stowaway and lets them work for their passage, the crew might not treat them kindly because their extra mouth means less food for them.

Ermm.. Is this somekind of Eurocentrism syndrome thing?
Because, Muslims know about this thing like.. Since hundreds of years ago. I mean 1 thousands and something.
They do fast for roughly 29 days every year. And that's just the main fast. Some of them also do the "side fasting".
And, in their method of fasting for 10+ hours, the thing is, you eat some foods near the time when u start your fast. Like.. U eat when 30minutes before the fast starts in every dawn for example.
And when u try to break your fast, u need to drink water first, and then eat like.. 3 date fruits. If u dont have date fruits, eat some little snacks first. To break your fast. And after that, they do the dusk prayer. And after the prayer, they eat their dinner meal. The heavy meal.
That's how it works for 1+thousands of years
Please, Europeans. Please be more open to the surrounding. Some Asians(chinese, arab, turks, austronesian, etc) are better than Europeans. They discover and invent some stuff earlier than the Europeans.

What was interesting is that during his Willy Wonka video you could tell his energy levels were low...but had no idea it was due to the challenge he was doing at the time. I figured it was from trying to put together the crazy factory.

    • @shivorath
      @shivorath 2 ปีที่แล้ว +107

Unlikely, after the first 3 days of a fast almost everyone reports greatly increased energy and mental clarity when fasting, and I have found that myself. It makes sense... if your body thinks you have no food, why would it encourage you to just lay around? Get out there, hunt something, forage, bring food in!
It's normal to feel low on energy when you don't eat enough... if you eat enough to live (barely) then your body is more inclined to wait it out for food to come. But if no food is available at all that's more of an emergency, and you tend to have a hard time sitting still.

    • @dieptrieu6564
      @dieptrieu6564 2 ปีที่แล้ว +78

@@shivorath That just doesn't make much sense. Your body still need energy to work. Even if it's motivated, fact is that it still have no calorie to burn to fuel your activity. So your body would still want to reserve as much energy as it can, leading to people feeling low energy level

@@shivorath Bullshit. A lack of food doesn't give you more energy. As explained in the video, it just gives you more stress and a reduced amount of dopamine. It's the lack of dopamine and the increased amount of stress that makes people hunt for food. Your energy on the other hand is much lower than normal so you waste as little of it as possible. At least outside of the times where you have a burst of adrenaline.
The only thing a lack of food doesn't do is make you sluggish. Being sluggish is not the same as having a lack of energy. Oh, and the reason for people reporting increased energy and mental clarity? They are sluggish for at least several hours a day when they aren't fasting and confuse being sluggish with a lack of energy.

    • @shivorath
      @shivorath 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

@@rendomstranger8698 if “your energy… is lower than normal so you waste as little as possible” then why does caloric expenditure go UP not down after 3-5 days of fasting?
You appear to be arguing from “common knowledge/logic”. I’m arguing from having read dozens of scientific studies into the subject and my own experience with multi-day fasts.
I suggest you do some research into the subject before making further claims.

I remember when I was a kid a holocaust survivor was telling us all these stories about his experience there, and the one that stuck with me the most for how so utterly devastating it is, is how when his small group was rescued at the end of the war they were given tins of food and rescue blankets. The only two options were a dryer biscuity type and a sausage and gravy type. He originally got the sausage one but his closest friend was far hungrier than him so he swapped it for the biscuit. They all hadn’t eaten in days- the shock to the system was so severe every person who ate the sausage died. He watched his only friend die AFTER they survived the holocaust…

A birthday came along and of course I have to eat. Suffice to say my body didn't like that and by the sixth spoonful I felt like my stomach cramped like a paper. It hurts so bad that when I had a leg cramp the same year all I felt was "It was annoying". Took me more than a month to recover properly.

Refeeding syndrome actually somewhat happened to my dad. He had a really bad case of the flu several years ago and could barely keep anything down. All he could have was broth for like a week and a half. Well he started to feel better. The rest of us wanted to get burgers. He obviously didn’t have one but wanted to have a bite (he wasn’t contagious anymore). He had one bite and within about fifteen minutes he was unresponsive. His eyes were wide open but he didn’t speak or respond when we were screaming at him. It was extremely terrifying. He was responsive with 10min and he refused to go to the hospital😖 thankfully he only got better after that but yeah don’t make any drastic changes!!

One of my grandmother's neighbors, a young boy, picked up a can of corned beef and ate it straight from opening the box of supplies. He dropped dead moments after. At the time my grandmother thought he died from choking to death, but later realized it must have been refeeding syndrome.

I honestly hope some people I used to know in eating disorder communities see this. They used to do binge meetups where they would fast for a week or more beforehand, then go to all-you-can-eat buffets and binge/purge. Realizing how deadly this was after the fact is scary, and I am honestly surprised at the amount of us that are still alive.

Refeeding is no concern at 3 days, slight concern for some folks at 5, and anything after that you start playing with fire. If they did 5 then I doubt they were in harm, doing a full 7 is bad though, especially more after that. If they purged afterward then it probably wouldn't be a big issue, though they probably still digested some food at that point. Purging has a whole list of issues in its own right too...

This actually makes sense. I had VSG back in 2019, lost a ton of weight, REALLY fast, was on a completely liquid diet for the first month or so, and the doctors I was working with didn’t specify name drop “refeeding syndrome” or that I could literally die from the complications, but they DID give me a list of foods that I could start reintroducing into my diet and when I could start reintroducing them. I absolutely did notice complications, though. Nothing too severe. Mainly, I’d just throw everything back up, I’d get sweaty and my heart would race. I could pretty much only eat eggs, chicken and drink unsweetened tea and water, about a year after the surgery because my body couldn’t handle other foods yet. They didn’t mention the exact portion size, in relation to body weight, so perhaps that’s why. Luckily, my body has acclimated to most things, once again. It never got used to sodas again and they burn the heck out of my stomach, so I can’t even have them on cheat days, now.

I’ve never been forced into recovery to experience it myself but I’ve done plenty of research on it. It can be extremely dangerous and harm your body in so many ways. This is why many people trying to recover from eating disorders only go up about 100 calories or so per week. there was a group of animals that had been brought in after they were highly neglected so they had multiple related isues but one was that because they had not eaten in a while they were real emaciated. i noticed that they didnt give them more to help them bulk up faster, i ask why and they brought this up. i found it at first abit scetchy as i didnt get it at first but they were the real vets. after awhile i forgot about it untill the video brought it up again. the dogs and the birds have probably already found an new place since i last was there.

Thankfully, Jimmy is smart enough to know when to quit and to know what to avoid doing..... Mostly, but the underwater challenge he did also put him in danger and he didn't seem aware of the danger with that challenge. Essentially, he was enclosed underwater with only an air pipe feeding him oxygen. What he failed to realize was that the small amount of oxygen was not enough, he was entoxicating himself with his own CO2 produced while breathing due to the lack of air circulation. After many hours underwater, Jimmy was dazed and confused, and nobody realized that he could have lost consciousness underwater, although his friends were thankfully checking in on him. I'm concerned that Jimmy will harm himself with these extreme challenges, since he always seems to grow more ambitious with his challenges.

As someone who fasts regularly I often see people join the fasting groups on reddit etc.. and say they are gunna fast for 30 days as a first fast. They usually have no idea about electrolytes and refeeding syndrome which puts them at a high risk of hurting themselves. You need to get educated about fasting dangers in order to do it safely.

As someone that’s had stomach issues, I know from personal experience what it feels like to have no food for a long time.
Basically, I started throwing up and wasn’t able to stop (anything I ate or drank came back up). This went on for a week, until meds helped me stop. The most dangerous thing was the lack of water, I received IV fluids in order to maintain hydration (though that was 2 days after the vomiting started, 3 days is when lack of water starts to get very dangerous). Without water I could barely think straight. After the water issues were managed with IV fluids, I still wasn’t eating much of anything. I noticed my lack of energy from no food, every step felt taxing and stairs were the worst, I always felt like sleeping and averaged 13 hours a day.
I’m better now, but in that week without food or water I’ve never felt closer to death.
[moral of the story: water is important, food is energy]

I was vaguely familiar with this because when I was younger I recall hearing my mom saying not to feed stray cats/dogs too much all of a sudden (if they're clearly scrawny) otherwise "their stomachs would explode" & they'd die. It wasn't quite the correct reason but still true information on the outcome it could bring.

I know this video is old but I wanted to express my sincere thanks to MatPat and his crew. I've recently been under surgery and couldn't eat properly for several days mainly eating jello and drinking water. After finally recovering (and not thinking) I ate a big ol burger with fries and nuggets. Hours later I find myself very very short of breath, light headed, and stomach I'll as heck. I was in pain the entire day. Long story short I remembered this specific video, cross checked my symptoms with my doctor and he confirmed I had succumb to Refeeding Syndrome. He told me what to do and so forth but I still have to thank MatPat cause this was the first thing that popped into my head.

    This is really informative.
Last year, I dealt with some starvation (not from not eating, but from not being able to get the food into my stomach (due to a disease called achalasia)) so when I was recovering from surgery to treat the cause, I was told to stick to clear liquids for a few days, liquids for a week, and then soft foods for two weeks before slowly transitioning to solid food.
I just assumed that it was to let the surgery heal, but this video kind of makes me realize that it was more of a "recalibration" thing. Cool.

So, i worked in eating disorders for a few years and I am so glad you brought up refeeding syndrome. It can be so dangerous because people do not understand it properly. I've heard of people with anorexia being admitted to a general hospital and then nearly dying because the nurses tried to "feed them up".
For further reading I would recommend an old study, known as the Minnesota study by Keys et al, the study was done in 1944 but published in 1950, in a volume called Biology of Human Starvation.
It's a study with a lot of useful and interesting information coming from it, including the dangers of refeeding syndrome, and about the mental and neurological difficulties of being in a long term state of starvation.

I've fasted for 2 months, culminating in 5 days with absolutely nothing, not even water. On my last day on/first day off, several people tried to give me food, and I had to keep explaining that I couldn't eat it. It took about 5 days of slowly eating heavier things before I felt confident to say that I counted as eating again.
Currently fasting again. As a diabetic, I have to be even more careful and drink a few things (like various milks and juices) to do it, but as long as you listen to your body, it lets you know if there's a problem.

There is a book written back in 1911 "The fasting cure" with half the book just test studies and results.
Personally I fast about a week every few months and my daily normal eating is 4 hour windows and I don't mess with Rice, noodles, or bread which is some times hard living in Asia.
The food market really has messed up our mind on how we should and what we should eat, its rather sad leading to more money for them and more unhealthy people from them.

@@NaughtNolan It's deeper than that. Nutritious things that are low in carbohydrates (and choose carbohydrates that cause the least insulin spike). The insulin spike causes a rush of salt to your cells which causes a heart attack. This is how people die usually. When I was a teen, a doctor forced me into a general hospital locked unit so as to be piled/prodded/studied, AND to consume 3,000 to 5,000 kcal per day at a minimum, after they estimated I had consumed 500 kcal daily for about 6 months (not far off though wrong, and not trying to be thin, for reasons assumed). I wasn’t that thin, and I needed autonomy. The reason I ended up there is complicated, but mainly THEY took me bc they needed more “anorexia research” study subjects. The place was obviously “backward” (well, worse, but I, just here Re: re-feeding syndrome). I did t agree but to get OUT of the house of horrors I’d been tricked into entering (in a manner that was against the law where I lived); I had to consume 10x what they assumed I’d been consuming. Sometimes (not often) it was 10,000 kcal. It’s painful physically, degrading mentally, and ot healthful even of, arguendo, someone is malnourished. Only one of the MDs on my treatment team- the youngest who had bothered to read up on the research his superiors weren’t familiar with yet tough planning to use data including on me for “study publication” (they never published anything); CARED. HE told me I’d die, please resist, etc. I’d already tried resistance bc I don’t like to be told what to do, I like autonomy and my body’s smallish size hurt nobody (including me). I did want to just get OUT. This horrible abuse is still perpetrated all around the world today, people. Even though a few people seem to have been treated by doctors or “self-treated” by gradually increasing caloric intake by as little as ca 100 kcal daily.

I researched extended fasting a while ago because I was desperate to lose weight and yeah, the fasting isn't the dangerous part... in fact from what I read fasting can be really good for you if done in a controlled environment, with medical supervision and for the right reasons. It's sometimes medically necessary. But if you've ever gone a day without eating and then suddenly ate a full meal and gotten sick, you probably already knew the eating is the dangerous part. ED patients rarely die from starvation from what I've heard, they die from cardiac arrest caused by refeeding syndrome. I'm so glad Mr Beast was responsible but I also feel he needed to stress the refeeding syndrome thing more because a focus of the video was weight loss and people looking to lose weight can be desperate people. They may copy him thinking they know what to expect. I now know that weight loss is a lot more complicated than cal in cal out and that the risks of extended fasting far outweigh the weight loss benefits. I'm on meds now to help me lose weight and I really think that's the way to go for a lot of people struggling.

This is true, a book "The fasting cure" written back in 1911 went over this with many test results from 100's of people. Not eating is not a bad thing honestly our bodies are built this way, eating 3 or 4 times a day is in fact unhealthy and none natural.
I do see a lot of people do these water fast though, than on day 8 order half the dollar menu and get sick and complain...
Dieting is a mind set, not the simple idea of not eating...

Fasting is one of the healthiest things you can do. Why would you not mention how important moderate fasts are? While 30 days is extreme, 1 - 3 days once or twice a year can have extreme health benefits.
