My friend just bought an ecoboost and even though it's weighed down with supercrew king ranch 4x4 stuff it's amazingly fast. Not just a short burst of power either, that thing will push you back in your seat hard and not let up. It's ridiculous. And we got 21 mpg from Dallas to Little Rock.
@Mctsep Well of course the 6.2L will smoke the EcoBoost, but that isn't comparing apples to apples. The 6.2L for both Chevy and Ford is designed to be a monster and have incredible power, but they drain gas like running water. The Ecoboost engine was designed to be a fuel-efficient engine that towed well and could keep up with most V8's.
Not all are driven by chain, some are gear driven. OHC designs are more costly to repair in the event of a chain failure or timing belt failure (piston to valve interference and valve to valve interference).
I never would have expected Ford to lead anything in tech but they've been killing it lately. The Ecoboost V6 in the F150 is for the most part just as advanced as the engine you'd get in an Audi.
@keviiinn I still like the sound a V8. But now you have to think differently due to this revolutionary engine. I wonder what the best MPG you can get out of this engine from the F-150?
Cool, we tried an Ecoboost down here in the south with 3.15's in rear and didn't quite go that fast. It would have ran in the 14's if it would have been a little cooler. Best we did was 15.16 @92mph. Did get 600+ miles on tank of fuel though!
The 6.2 is also 16 valves, 16 less than the 5.0. The 6.2 is constricted on air flow due to the push rod design. The mpg is actually 25 mpg on the highway, but these are EPA ratings, actual numbers will vary on the driver and driving conditions. Push rod is proven technology as they age, less moving parts and less cost to repair in the event of a failure.
I've never really cared to much for Ford products except the Mustang, but their newer vehicles are really eye catching and stylish. I can't believe that the Ecoboast engine is putting out 420 lbs-ft of toque and it isn't a diesel powered engine. Good work Ford!
I'm thinking of getting one of these F-150s soon or a Jeep 4-door Unlimited. But which vehicle will last the longest & are these F-150s (with the new motors) 4-wheel drive? From what I've learned both vehicles have pretty crummy gas milage at around 15/20. Also, I heard the 3.8 motors in the Jeeps aren't very powerful at all. I really like the Jeep from the standpoint of being able to put the seats down and sleep if I need to, but I suspect the Ford is much better built. Thoughts? Thanks Much!!
i work at a ford dealer. i drive the 5.0 and the ecoboost. both great engines. and to the guy talking about the 6.7 and the 7.3 hands down 6.7 is where the power is at. lets forget about the 6.0 and the 6.4
@solarlightning well the base v6 still has more tech than the old 2 valve 4.6, like an alluminum block, 4 valves and dohc with ti-vtc and direct injection mated to the 6 speed that used to be only on higher end models.
although i am a chevrolet fan, i'm really glad to see ford put some really impressive engines in their trucks. lets not forget that chevy was putting more powerful engines in their trucks until ford's new lineup. anyway im glad to see the big three have really stepped up their game with their recent lineups. American Made Baby!!!!!
From my understanding the Eco boost in the F-150 is HP numbers are the same as the toruqe numbers. 400/400. Still very impressive at the least. I got too test drive one!
@WeeWizeL yes i know, the 2011 engines are a 3.7 v6, 3.5 v6 eco boost, 5.0 v8, and the 6.2 v8 which only comes in the harley davidson, platinum, and raptor
I'm not a big ford guy but I drove a Ecoboost F150 my friend just got one and the thing is a fast and its get 23 miles to a gallon at 70. My GM may get 18 on a good day.
@MrUnKnOwNM4 man that sucks. Was a $750 upgrade from 5.0 for me, you plan on putting boss intake on? People are getting amazing results from that and a tune.
That's awesome. Definately can tell Ford is going to reignite the hotrod truck trend with their new V6's and V8. It's going to be the Japanese market back in the 80's-90's when almost every car had a turbocharger attatched...people start building up on them because they're a lot easier to build power out of than a N/A motor
You are right and I would take a 351 cleveland or any of the FEs they were great, I know the 300 six wasn't the fastest but that motor lasted and pulled great.
No i'm not? OHC's eliminate the need for pushrods, the camshaft in a pushrod engine drives the pushrods, in a ohc there are no pushrods being operated, and pushrods use timing chains just like ohc's
they put out 5 lbs each from the factory but if you have a tuner that plugs into the ECU they are capable of going up to 15 each though that is a little too much for the engine so to be safe i keep my uncles at 10 lbs each for him and with the 10 lbs more than factory his runs last time he actually raced it in the low to mid 13s but the truck isnt built for racing its built for working so track times dont even matter in this case, its a good work truck, i personally wouldnt trade it for anything
LOVE my Eco-boost. Best truck I've ever had. can beat any GMC, Chevy, or Dodge stock truck, and keeps up with a 6.2 F-150. oh, and i get 24mpg on the hwy at 70mph
@GMdrivingMOPARguy, actually the ecoboost in the trucks hit 420 ft-lb's at 2500 RPM. that beats all the V8's it competes with both in low RPM and ft-lb's it will tow 11,500lb's acording to Ford.
@ashtrey05 yea it does but im waiting for the regular cab short bed 2 wheel drive f150 with the 360hp 5.0. i heard its a nasty truck and im also waiting for the ecoboost 3.5 to show up in the 2wd regular cab short bed ranger!!!! you trading your ford in for a new 1?
Impressive runs but keep in mind that those ar 4X2 models which weigh signifigantly less than 4x4 models (which most will be) also those are the smaller versions of the trucks single cab (ok maybe 1ft "extended cab) but the Quad cab + 4x4 will run slower with those motors.
@solarlightning uhhh, no. this v6 is packed with so much technology it will actually cost more money. direct injection and two turbochagers are not cheap.
The Ecoboost is a nice truck but the moisture issue is not good that I've heard about. EPA also made them rate the mpg lower, which is now accurate. Other than that this truck is a beast, I just hate their having this trouble. Domestically, Ford is the overall best.
@andrestnt the eco is considered a premium engine. it probably costs more to make than the 6.2, with that you are paying to have the MOST power and the MOST torque. PUT.C actually ran them together and the ecoboost beat the boss. the cost to develop the ecobosst was more than the old iron block 2 valve 6.2 as well, i doubt they have broke even yet let alone make a profit and the engine will still be very expensive until demand goes up and component cost comes down.
I have a 2011 fx4 ecoboost, and got my ass smoked by my buddies brand new stock 6.2l chevy 1/2 ton. Didnt know chevy had a truck like that he ran 14.2 in hot weather, and he has 3.43 gears. That thing is crazy fast. Fastest truck made right now
@EatmyDust1311 The prices have been released, the EB is only 1700dlls more than a standard 3.7L. Its very competitive with the V8 engines it competes with, wile offering more HP and torque. The 6.2L is a 3000dll option and its bran new engine as well and only offered in expensive F150 trims. There Two advantages the EB offers, one being offered in every trim level except STX and offering the same towing capabilities as the 6.2L
@RTic83 ...Really? How long did it take you to figure that out. The point is you can make it work, The F150 wasnt designed to be a power house, yet the lightning was born.
like i said i thought i was gonna lose. i have an 09 ram hemi crew cab 4x4 big horn with the 3.55 gears. stock 20's and everything running on 89 octane like it should. i aint hating but i did pull on him and he tipped his hat to me as we were gonna line up for another go. i swear i thought i was gonna be a laughing stock but the hemi handled great. from what i hear the 3.55 gears in the ram are better for top end than the 4.10's but hey id like to see what happens now with age lol
well i dont know why so many people are hating on different trucks ive raced an ecoboost with my 09 ram hime crew cab 4x4 and beat it from a roll and from a dig it was close but i still pulled out ahead of him. i thought i was gonna get my ass handed too me considering all the hype they have but who knows the gear ratios could be different and shit like that so i wouldnt mind racing that dude again or any others out there but most around here are old people that believe in mpg
@EatmyDust1311 The cost to produce will be spread between the product line, SHO, Flex, F150, MKT ex.. The price increase is competitive with its competitors, the real premium engine is the 6.2L a 3k option only available in top trims (limited, platinum, king ranch, Harley Davidson)
@georgio941 bc the EPA here sets high standards. Yes they last longer and get better mileage ( btw they also have turbos) it is the fact diesel doesn't burn as clean as gas. When you move into the super duty weight class, the standards are lowered.
Horsepower per cube is impressive. My race car is a Chevy, buy daily driver is new f150. I didn't get ecoboost because it's too new, and I had to have a crewcab 4x4. Really not a bad truck, I wouldnt own it out of warranty though.
I wouldn't rag out that little 4.8. Yea, stock they're a little behind the curve but they love mods and boost and if you look around.. you'll find some that lay down some serious hurt.
i wouldnt say any...my dad has a 2010 f150 4.6 3v stx 4x4 with the extended cab, and i have a 2012 dodge ram crew cab hemi. my truck runs 14.7 consistently at the track and i walk all over his f150. i ran numerous f150s, harley trucks, even a new eco boost. its the only competition the hemis have from ford. the raptors are fast, but not many around have the 6.2 engine and none of them ever want to run. i love ford and ram trucks. i would never bash either of them.
@valenteduarte Diesels have become so expensive to maintain not due to the tech, but due to the government. Even though I'm an EcoBoost Platinum owner, I would still have liked to have seen how the (now shelved I think) 4.4L Diesel would have been in the F150.
Wow! A full size xtra cab pickup turning in a 14.5 with a twin turbo V6? The big story would be what is the mileage on this rig. Reliability would be to biggest story. I'm not sure that the good 'ol boys here in Texas are gonna like the way this engine sounds with duals and super 40s.
@valenteduarte I fell you with that one. I'm in the same boat trying to sell that new 6.7. People just don't trust it. They are still in love with that 7.3 and are skeptical that the 6.7 are going to be as bad as the 6.4.
Maybe she doesn't change her oil often enough, there could be very many variables. You still can't get past the point that nothing is more awesome than GM continuing to produce world-class horsepower and fuel economy from a design that reaches so far back in the company’s (and America’s) hot rod history from a push rod engine. All my vehicles are push rod, except for one.
Its really sad, I was talking to my dad today and was trying to talk him into buying a f150 ecoboost, he said it would not be powerful enough that he would rather get a v8, He doesn't understand that Displacement =/= power in the new day and age. He was sitting here trying to tell me his old dodge 5.9 dakota would pull a trailer before an ecoboost f150; So I'm trying to wrap my head around how a 250 hp/345 lb ft engine is more powerful than a 365hp/350 lb ft engine. Also 5 gears vs 6...
Pretty quick. But. Chevys 6.2 runs 14.2. In the extendedcab. Brand new with 3.43s bone stock. Ive seen this personally. And in 98 degree weather no less. Dont get me wrong i love my 2011 fx4. Just tired of us ford fans thinking our ecoboost is the fastest truck. Chevy has that title.
@points2shopPROOF I think 2014 is the next refresh date. As for a 5.0 EB, I don't think we'll see it. It really doesn't make sense when the current V6 is pushing out 365HP and 420 LB Ft torque and can tow 11,300 pounds. If you need more than that, you are out of the market the 1/2 ton is designed to fill. You need a SuperDuty/Diesel at that point. Would it be fun? Hell yes :) But it's not going to happen.
@mtr4216 That would be cool. Those engines made some good torque but in reality these days people want gas mileage and a v6 would fit better than in I6
This is an example of why I wouldn't want something equipped like that, to many problems, I prefer a naturally aspirated engine. So to see you're having issues, especially for what you pay for a new F150 or similar.
You are more likely to blow a rod than have a timing chain failure unless there is a defect somewhere. My grandmother had a 89 cutlass with 70,000 miles on it. It blew a rod right through the top of the engine and bent multiple valves. She is an old lady who always takes her cars to get routine maintenance and never drives above 5 mph below the speed limit. OHC's can also be gear driven. I have a 02 SOHC ranger with 140,000 miles on it and it runs like new.
@mrat455 my 06 probally runs about 15.50(never run before) that its a ext cab long box 1/2 ton has the 5.3l vortec with 125,000 km rated at 315 hp oh and i get 14 mpg city and 17 highway the ecoboost gets almost the exact same accordingly to other ecoboost owners but it makes way more torque and hp than my 5.3l.
@Mctsep well that lil ecoboost ran 14.9 with less hp and smaller displacement then the 6.2 yes granted the 6.2 is faster stock. the what happens when people start to learn how to unlock the power of this engine

Can you get the Eco boost engine in a regular cab short bed pick up? I'd want that engine in the lightest package available.
@keviiinn
I still like the sound a V8. But now you have to think differently due to this revolutionary engine. I wonder what the best MPG you can get out of this engine from the F-150?
@EatmyDust1311 the 3.7L is not direct injected, its port injected and will be upgraded in 2013-14 with DI.
Cool, we tried an Ecoboost down here in the south with 3.15's in rear and didn't quite go that fast. It would have ran in the 14's if it would have been a little cooler. Best we did was 15.16 @92mph. Did get 600+ miles on tank of fuel though!

It runs pretty good in a race application but how does the ecoboost tow? Dosent seem like it would be a very good truck engine to me
I'm a GM guy, I swapped a 5.3 into my '95 C1500 but I would rock the hell out of a Ecoboost for a DD.
i work at a ford dealer. i drive the 5.0 and the ecoboost. both great engines. and to the guy talking about the 6.7 and the 7.3 hands down 6.7 is where the power is at. lets forget about the 6.0 and the 6.4

UPS and Fed ex trucks used the 300 strait 6 for years. I have a pickup with one.
That new 3.7 sounds great and is running with the older 5.4, impressive.
although i am a chevrolet fan, i'm really glad to see ford put some really impressive engines in their trucks. lets not forget that chevy was putting more powerful engines in their trucks until ford's new lineup. anyway im glad to see the big three have really stepped up their game with their recent lineups. American Made Baby!!!!!
@solarlightning small does not = cheap
small does not = no power.
it is a new engine, a more advanced one. the alluminum block alone costs a lot more.
@keviiinn
Do you think the Chassis components would hold up as well as the F-150? Of course you are talking AWD right?
From my understanding the Eco boost in the F-150 is HP numbers are the same as the toruqe numbers. 400/400. Still very impressive at the least. I got too test drive one!
This is all well and good. but half the reason i turn my head for most pick up trucks is because of how sweet the exhaust sounds
@WeeWizeL yes i know, the 2011 engines are a 3.7 v6, 3.5 v6 eco boost, 5.0 v8, and the 6.2 v8 which only comes in the harley davidson, platinum, and raptor
notice how the ecoboost was a bigger cab too. that adds some weight
Its time for a Ecoboost V8
I'm not a big ford guy but I drove a Ecoboost F150 my friend just got one and the thing is a fast and its get 23 miles to a gallon at 70. My GM may get 18 on a good day.

If they even get to direct injecting a pushrod...
2010 5.3 gm pushrod - 315 - 326* hp @ 5200 rpms - 335 - 348* lb/ft @ 4400 rpms
2010 5.4 ford OHV - 310 - 320* hp @5000 rpms - 364 - 390* lb/ft @ 3500 rpms.

@Zinizzle I'm right there with you but the description does say DragWay...
Fastest truck made right now
my 2002 5.3 chevy 210,000 miles ran a 15.90 its rated 285hp and 5000 pounds
@pmhoard i have a question since u work for ford, does the ecoboost have more hp and torque than the 5.0l?
@EatmyDust1311 The EcoBoost only cost 1700dlls more than the base 3.7LV6, and 700dlls more than the 5.0L(1000dollar option)
The EcoBoost ran nearly a full second faster then chevy 6.2 (15.52) which WAS the fastest full size pickup.
@EatmyDust1311 The prices have been released, the EB is only 1700dlls more than a standard 3.7L. Its very competitive with the V8 engines it competes with, wile offering more HP and torque. Damn that's faster than a lot of hondas i see at the track. Ecoboost FTW!!
I would like to see ecoboost on a drag compared to the chevy 5.3L and Ram Hemi 5.7L

no crap its going to be pretty fast its got twin turbos!

I wouldn't rag out that little 4.8. Yea, stock they're a little behind the curve but they love mods and boost and if you look around.. you'll find some that lay down some serious hurt.
by the way, GM's small block isn't even direct injected yet. Wait till they switch, then the game will be on.
Ford For Life
anybody know what the gas mileage is looking like for the ecoboost?
i wouldnt say any...my dad has a 2010 f150 4.6 3v stx 4x4 with the extended cab, and i have a 2012 dodge ram crew cab hemi. my truck runs 14.7 consistently at the track and i walk all over his f150. i ran numerous f150s, harley trucks, even a new eco boost. its the only competition the hemis have from ford. the raptors are fast, but not many around have the 6.2 engine and none of them ever want to run. i love ford and ram trucks. i would never bash either of them.

@mattswaggs We're talking Ecoboost, not your old rust buckets and we're also talking 1/2 ton trucks.
@jayguy173 The eco tows 11,300 with 3.73 gears and max tow package. The 5.0 only tows 10,000
what's the fuel economy?
@mojame100
Ok correction,
It is 365/425. But very impressive !
@powershop1903 its not going to.. its till in europe and they also plan to replace the ranger in N.A with the ford f100
@Jonpego9
the should call it the svo just like the last turbo mustang
@DaedalusZero the v6 ecoboost? i dont want a 4cyl ecoboost
@Jonpego9 why? it would cost more than a GT Premium and not be as fast.
i wish they would put that engin in the 2011 ford explorer or the 6.2 v8
@mojame100 i heard with a light foot and not towing or hauling around 30 mpg
but the normal truck is also a 3.7 the eco is 3.5 that .200 of a liter makes a bigger difference than you would think
@RTic83 To powerful for production?
@valenteduarte I fell you with that one. I'm in the same boat trying to sell that new 6.7. People just don't trust it. They are still in love with that 7.3 and are skeptical that the 6.7 are going to be as bad as the 6.4.
So the 3.7 NA get 302 and the 3.5 TWIN turbo get 365. Pretty sad that they only mustered 63 more HP adding a couple turbos to a motor.
yeah but 420 ft lbs of torque way down low vs 278 way up high
You are obviously very confused, there are way more moving parts in an OHC configuration. Push rod has less moving parts and has proven very reliable.
OO ARE THEY MAKING A SINGLE CAB WITH 5.5 FOOT BOX AGAIN. I want one but they only put 6.5 on there.
Yeah But isn't one an Extra Cab and one Just a Regular Cab? Makes a Big Difference in Weight I would think.
A mustang with an ecoboost engine would be epic.
@valenteduarte it's more than $700 btw its more money than the 5.0
@TheZman77 The 5.4L's aren't in the 2011 models.
@jasonwb28 If that was what you wanted then why did you settle? you should have told the dealer to get that truck for you.
@mtr4216 That would be cool. Those engines made some good torque but in reality these days people want gas mileage and a v6 would fit better than in I6
@coreyhess1 - They are putting the Eco-Boost engine in the Explorer.
love that track.
@ChillaxedJosh I have seen it go much quicker with the traction control disabled. 0-60 in about a second quicker with it turned off.
@georgio941 Most all diesels are turbo charged, so what you say to that?????
@Mctsep what about the new 6.2 in the fords
