Kotohime Japanese Maples for Bonsai - taking some cuttings

took some cuttings off of a sacrifice branch i cut off my mother kotohime. her lower trunk is just about thick enough to make me smile, so I'm going to slowly start working on her, trying to find that next transition angle. my clonex is all runny cause i spilled water in it, so i just put a splash in a little more water to soak the cut ends.

I've started using coco coir/ perlite mix at around 5/1 for starting cuttings and i get better results, as long as they don't get overwatered.

bonsaijack inorganic mix off their website. it's 25% each: lava, pumice, calcined clay, monto clay.
i have to do some work on those big cuttings in the spring.

3 years? is it really that fast growing?

yep. potted that barely pinky thick airlayer up into i think a 3 gallon(edit: 2.25gal) in February, 2019. i actually slowed it down by cutting all the shoots back except one leader in june, 2019. if you don't cut it back and let it run, you'll have a massive trunk in 5 to 10 years. if you can ground grow for a few years...

Great video thanks for sharing. The cuttings u took, are they all this yrs growth or are u able to do older hardwood cuttings too? U definitely know what ur doing, bro!!

ive rooted pencil thick cuttings with no special treatment. just cut right off the tree and stuck in soil. this kotohime cultivar is a very strong rooter naturally, so you shouldn't have too many problems.
