@@GrowingBonsai Beautiful video! By this answer do you mean that they all succeeded? Did those in cocopeat turn out just as well as those in vermiculite? Am really curious ! greetings from Belgium
Hi Silvio, yes. (And as plants create oxygen.. It will create more by itself). I am not completely sure of the process of it, but I have not had any problems putting them in zip-lock baggies. I do every few weeks open them up to check.
Your trees are beautiful. Does the plastic bag have to fit tight over the pot of cuttings or can it be larger? Thinking it would make it easier for me to use a slightly larger bag. Thanks.
This video’s golden, yet, I have a question for ya… 😁 I’ve done the same exact steps shown in your video at the beginning of June and now I can see that the majority of the cuttings are still alive and should’ve rooted. It took 7.5 weeks for this. Now what should I do? Let them grow (not under direct sunlight I guess) in the same pot together till I see more substantial growth or would it be better to repot? 🤔
I leave mine where they are for the year. Slowly I will get them used to drier air by opening up the baggie. Maybe around leaf drop, or else in early spring will I take a look, lift them from the pot and plant them up properly. Hurrying the process is a recipe for problems!

Hi, great video! I will for sure give it a try on my Arakawa maple. I’m curious to know if an Arakawa can be air layered where the “rough bark” has already formed? Or only on parts that haven’t “barked” up? Thank you for any and all info. Take care and keep the great videos coming! LOVE AND RESPECT from the west coast of the United States. BONSAI!!
Hey Dan, great to hear from you. I am going to have ton answer based on hear-say. My understanding is that arakawa roots very well, also from well-aged trunks. I am planning on giving it a go on one of my old arakawas next spring, so I know from personal experience how that works!
Hi Bob, not I am not trying to sterilize them. Just getting rid of some aphids. The mix is the same as I use for spraying: Maybe a spoon of soap & a shot of spiritus in a liter of water.
@@GrowingBonsai in the video you jumped straight into washing soap right off the leaves. How did you select the cuttings? Why was there soap on them? Do you dip them in soap first before rinsing them? I'm confused by the start of your video
@@pablosuarez7602 - the end of the video explains some of the things at the start. The soapy water is used to rinse off aphids that were present on the cuttings. The cuttings were chosen from new growth areas near the top of the planting.
As soon as I see the first buds starting to open up. That for me is a sign of the tree (starting to) root. Mind you, if a cutting just sits there all summer, I do not fertilize. Whereas if they start pushing 6 weeks after taking the cutting, that is when I start
@@GrowingBonsai Dank Jelle, Ik heb het nu zonder gedaan. De 'soft wood cuttings' staan nu in het raamkozijn in potten in een ziplockbag. Over anderhalve week mogen ze eruit. Ben benieuwd! Dank voor de super-uitleg!
Really good, I had no success with the coco coir last spring. I have a question, I've let my Trident maple get more than 1 meter tall so it could thicken the base... It is said that large cuts are made on the winter, since sap flow it's slow, almost null. But if I want to make those long sacrifice branches into cuttings, would it be on the winter? or I would have to wait till late spring to make those big cuts? Same situation with air layerings, you do on mid/late winter or late spring?
I have never understood why people want to make big cuts in winter. In fact, today I have taped a new video (Out next month I am afraid, lots of editing). In this video I take a rotary tool and carve a big chunk of trunk away. I do this NOW because the tree is nice and actively growing. It is right now responding to the damage, sending all energy straight to the damaged site to repair. Do this in winter, and you have to wait till spring for it to start repairing. I make big cuts in mid spring to summer. Which would coinside with airlayering in spring and then separation in summer.
@@GrowingBonsai Well, because people say that once maples got active again, they would bleed a lot throught big cuts... Also maybe because it would induce the plant to bud on the right spots once spring comes by? Idk, all the maple care is really new for me.
@Albanus35 The period from around late feb to the start of growth is when maple roots start pushing juice into the trunk. (Think maple syrop!). If you trim in that period some water comes out. But nothing to the extend that it will seriously harm it. After that, once the leaves are out, bleeding is virtually non-existent :)
@@Soul_N_Control I do not need to water normally. I do every month or so take them out, wash them and flush the soil. Let them drip dry and putthem back in!
From Germany here. Happened to see your video just now. Wondering if it too late to propagate now ? It's been cold until day before yesterday, like in spring.
I think you are experiencing a second growing flush at about right now too. I could imagine that ot would work, but I have not tried a late season. Let me know if you try!
would love to know which growing medium worked better, or worse. Is there a better time of year to take cuttings on maples? Great video, and I am looking to try this one day soon
Hoi Jelle, ik wil Acer winter stekken proberen, wil jij daar een video van maken als de tijd juist is. Ik heb dat nog nooit gedaan en ik vind geen duidelijke uitleg daarover
Can cuttings be stored somehow? My parents live long distance from me and will be visiting in late June, I’m wondering if they can take cuttings off their Japanese maple now (or soon) and keep them alive until they come to visit me in late June and I’d process them then, use the rooting hormone and planting them.
Hi joanne, once these are rooted they have regular survival as other maples. Grafted arakawa has the downside that the nebari does not get the rough bark. I have 2 mature arakawa on their own roots (see my videos, one of them is in there). They are on their own roots too.
I did the baggie trick and it filled with mold after a few days. Maybe it's the substrate I used (peat moss and potting soil) I'll try with vermiculite now.
could i still root cutting this time of the year with it being late spring/ early summer? and doesnt the cuttings need oxygen being closed up in the bag? please explain
I am not sure whether it would work. But.. Give it a try. What have you got to loose if you are pruning anyway? The bag provides a mini-ecosystem. As the plant produces O2 and CO2 and uses both, it seems to work without trouble
@@GrowingBonsai already on it but i put my cuttings in a plastic storage container tho that should give the same results right? i’m also trying seiryu cuttings let’s see what happens
Hi Jelle, thanks, I love this video of yours and, after watching this, I went into my garden and took some cuttings from Acer P plant. As you suggested, potted (x 4) and put in sandwich bags. Now, approx 2 weeks later (end of July 2022), they seem to be looking as I planted them, ie not died. At what point will I know they have rooted and at what point do I remove/open the plastic bags, please? Many thanks for any help, J :)
I have 6-8 weeks as a rough indication when I expect them to start rooting. I just unlock the ziplocks, nothing else. Every once in a while I might take the pot out, shower them, and let them air a bit. In fall I will check which have rooted.
@@GrowingBonsai Thank you so much for your response, and so promptly too ;) Very impressive ! Did you watch the video? th-cam.com/video/mLRLUcv5Ro8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=IZofHRRtl8rnIhLn&t=92
If you have a green house do you need to do the bag trick?
What type of soap do you use?
regular dishwashing soap. I can recommend taking a look at my video on getting rid of aphids without poison!
th-cam.com/video/cxXH2mG5RjE/w-d-xo.html
Awesome video! Thank you Jelle!
gladly!
When sterilizing the cuttings, what ratio of water to alcohol and soap do you use?
Hi Jelle. When are you fertilising the cuttings? In the current year, after roots have formed or only after following year?
As soon as I see the first buds starting to open up. That for me is a sign of the tree (starting to) root. Mind you, if a cutting just sits there all summer, I do not fertilize. Whereas if they start pushing 6 weeks after taking the cutting, that is when I start
Geweldig gedetailleerd uitgelegd Jelle!
Oh, I just got to the part you mention hardwood cuttings.
Let me know how you go on the hardwood cuttings on trident. I have not been succesfull with tridents yet.
After that, once the leaves are out, bleeding is virtually non-existent :)
great video! Do you have any issues with fungus growing inside the bag when its so airtight closed?
Hi Alessio, thank you for asking. Interestingly, so far, I have not had that problem!
@@GrowingBonsai How often do you water and how much being in the bag? Do you remove it each time or just do a spritz?
@@Soul_N_Control I do not need to water normally. I do every month or so take them out, wash them and flush the soil. Let them drip dry and putthem back in!
@@GrowingBonsai Ty!
excellent video thank you
Great to hear you like it! Thank you!
@@GrowingBonsai I've made some cuttings from two of my Maple trees/plants. 🙏 hoping they will grow 😃😍
Great video.
What rooting gel do you use?
This is made by clonex
Thank you. I’ll give it a try!
would love to know which growing medium worked better, or worse.
Is there a better time of year to take cuttings on maples?
Great video, and I am looking to try this one day soon
Did you see the follow-up video studio.th-cam.com/users/video64efnSZEX1I/edit? I prefer mid-spring cutting taking.
@@GrowingBonsai Great, thank you!
@@GrowingBonsai 👍🏼 bedankt
Very interesting! 👌🏻👍🏼
Can cuttings be stored somehow? My parents live long distance from me and will be visiting in late June, I’m wondering if they can take cuttings off their Japanese maple now (or soon) and keep them alive until they come to visit me in late June and I’d process them then, use the rooting hormone and planting them.
Will powder rooting compound work or does it need to tbe the gel variety?
I think the powder should do the trick too, but I have the unprooven feeling that since I started using gel, I have better success.
Interesting, but how can they survive in the long-term? Grafting onto hardy root stalk ensures a better survival rate
Maybe it's the substrate I used (peat moss and potting soil)
I'll try with vermiculite now.
Maybe. That feels like it is really wet.
@@GrowingBonsai you said toss it under a bench, does this need direct sun or just sunlight will do?
@@jmsilhy Try a well lit place out of direct sunlight.
Helpful tips.
Glad to hear that :)
Hello, thank you for the informative video! Also do i have to use a rooting hormone or can I have success without using it?
...? th-cam.com/video/mLRLUcv5Ro8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=CjpmM7nTjlhk-_99&t=187
Any feedback on these cuttings - difference in success rates between the coir and the vermiculite as substrate?
Absolutely! th-cam.com/video/64efnSZEX1I/w-d-xo.html
Another wonderful video by Jelle!!!! Will this work with all cultivars? Katsura? Shin Deshojo?
This works for the ones that root from cuttings, which shindeshojo and katsura do, so yes
could i still root cutting this time of the year with it being late spring/ early summer? and doesnt the cuttings need oxygen being closed up in the bag? please explain
I have successfully rooted cuttings of all kinds in perlite
Hey! thank you for making this, how long do you keep the cuttings in the bags?
I have a red I would like to do this, what is the best soil and soil moisture content
I would recommend watching the video
What are you dipping in before you place in dirt?
It is a rooting hormone gell from the CLonex brand
Very helpfull and good thx
Gladly! Wish you success!
Did you use vermiculite on its own or did you mix it with soil. If mixture then what proportions.

do you take cuttings inside (home) during their first winter or you just let them be in their natural habitat? (like a frost free cold garage)
Just outside for me!
OK, so I need to mark on my calendar, cos I have such a poor memory, to do this in about 4-5 weeks time
Then, presumably, re-pot as/when roots are showing in the bottom of the pot? I intend to, ultimately, have at least one, in reasonable-sized pot, on my patio. I think it will be a few years before it's a nice little size LOL
Thank you again for your help :)
As said, I just check in fall. Then I take them all out of the pot and see which ones have rooted. Dropping leaves does not always mean dead !
