- The 1991 Ford Ranger is getting a rear 4 link suspension build and King Coilover shocks! We are removing the leaf springs and building a custom rear 4 link with King coilover shocks for rock crawling. We used different brackets from Ballistic Fabrication, Barnes 4wd and Artec. The joints are all Ballistic fab joints.

As a fabricator of many years and doing a lot of chassis work I must say guys you guys did a really awesome job with this project I really like it it's very motivating and downright awesome!! Keep the great videos coming you guys two thumbs up here out of Houston Texas!

Quite frustrating how you make a 4 link build done in a driveway look so simple and easy. Makes me want to go out and just start cutting. Nice videos. Subbed.
vica153 you should just go out and start cutting! Yes there is a little bit of math and planning involved, but a lot of people seem to over complicate things and then never get anything accomplished. Just remember, almost anything can be cut off, and almost anything can be welded back on, or rebuilt. If you do a 4 link and don’t like it, cut it off and adjust it
Ever seen that Simpsons episode where Homer builds a BBQ?
These guys look like it was completed on the whiteboard before the first cut was made. No measuring and configuring on the fly for clearances of unexpected obstacles and stuff. A good starting base like a straight chassis and dive way with a very flat concrete slab would help
The whole process in the video was ‘on the fly’. It helps when it’s still sitting on the old suspension and you’re not changing the ride height at all. The Stuburban took a little more effort, but following the same principles helps. Set ride height and axle position, then put some tubes in place to see how it looks and run numbers.
also a fabricator of many years, and not a fan of monster truck builds, , but am impressed with the dive and roll resistance the under chassis cam showed, good engineering. Well done lads.
I would really recommend tieing the top of the truss into the top of the diff. It will twist and try and rip off of the diff. Subscribed and looking forward to more content, really good video format, editing, and content.

Maybe you guy's could find a donor truck to do a DIY on long travel leaf spring's? With upgraded Shocks?? Great video's.
We don’t currently have plans to build another Offroad setup any time soon; however, if we do, we’ll be sure to take this into consideration. 👍
Ram Wall they’re like regular leaf springs, but they allow more travel. You’re a special individual.

I want to do this to my 2wd Ranger
So I’ve got a 2020 Ford Ranger 4x4/FX4 and I want to be able to drive 30-40 mph down bumpy dirt roads rocks etc and have a smooth ride doing so.
What stuff is out there that I can have installed to do that?
Bought a 68 c10 with a 4 link set up. But more for drag racing. Trying to run it on the st as a daily driver though. Does that sound crazy? Is it a rough ride?
my problom is i have wheel hope when i let out the clutch how do i get rid of that?

Looks like you need to bias to your front brakes more. You can do that with a valve or separate the front and back with two master brake cylinders.

I'm about the pull the trigger on a 4-link for my XJ. But I'm worried it won't perform well as a hybrid rock crawler, overlanding, and daily driver rig. Any input is appreciated!
I haven’t had many miles to test it yet, but the handling on road with a custom built sway bar is nice.
One thing to keep in mind with coilovers, if you plan to load the vehicle up with lots of gear, you have to plan for that accordingly.

Since the links are triangulated, no trac is required
quick question. with this type of 4 link set up, do you get any lateral movement from the rear axle? i am new to all this
The triangulation of the links prevent the axle from moving side to side. If all of the links were parallel a pan hard bar would be needed to prevent lateral axle movement
What program did you have on the laptop to run your numbers through to calculate everything? I can do all the work for this but idk how to get the suspension geometry right
If you search "triaged 4 link calculator" you will find it, it's 100% free

They are Chevy calipers and some 5x5.5 rotors I had machined locally
im gonna do this to my 94 k2500 suburban with a 7.4 454
I was going to say it's sitting a little high in the ass in about 2 in to 3 in but it's a nice set-up man I like it a lot keep it up man
I have changed the spring rates and it sits about 3” lower now
I've watched this about 3x lol , I like it so much . I have a 77 Cj5 it's all the way to chassis now . Instead of springs, I want mine to have drive character like your's, Man it look's fun as hell to drive . Can't wait , hoping to have it done by Fall . I'm gonna run 35s , I still want my Jeep to retain classic look . If I get the right dampener only let it goe so far . Really just need to research wieghts , cog lines , I bet a line laser is worth it on these job's . Still I believe it will come down to coilovers or air . Killer Truck dude's I bet it was a fun one . Is it still around ?

How did the joints hold up to welding the brackets with the joints in place?
They held up perfectly. The heat wasn’t enough to effect the races inside the joint.
Real nice! You guys make the build look super easy. How do you guys figure out what size coilover/spring to get a certain lift? 3.5 inch lift. Trying to get this setup on a 72 blazer. Thanks
Check out Crawlpedia. You will find a wealth of information related to your question on there.
You’ll have to figure out the vehicle’s sprung weight and unsprung weight, desired travel and ride height, and it will vary depending on single/dual rate setup.

We haven’t gone into detail on it yet. We wanted to wait until we had plenty of opportunity to mess with ours.
I Have a 1988 Ranger I brought it in 2007 for $1200.00 the guy that owned it took very good care of it. I put air shocks in the rear (it's the family work horse) and coil overs in the front. It's a two wheel drive with no torsion bars. Is there a way to lift the front end about 3 in. without changing the coils?

Something I've always wondered once you have welded the braces or whatever you call em alongside the prop as you go over rough ground the axel is going to be pushed back and forth does it have a 2 peice prop to adjust to this or am I mistaken?
Yes, the driveshaft is two pieces.
In the turns heels like a cruiser Aurora, you need a stabilizer.
I’m not really sure what you mean, but, there is a sway bar on the rear.

Same thing. It has one on the rear.
Would consider gusset if the coil over mounts. That’s a lot of stress on one tube.

So build the links at ride height and then build shock mounts at full bump?
Yeah that's how this setup was done. Put the suspension to full bump to make sure you get it setup to utilize the full shock travel
what made contact first at 5:17 ? is that okay? what should ideally touch first at full squat?
Nothing contacted, there is clearance all the way around. The bump stops are the only thing you really want to have any contact.
