Dana 70 Rebuild, Lincoln Locker & Disc Brake Conversion - Reckless Wrench Garage

  • On this episode of The Reckless Wrench Garage, we rebuild a Dana 70 HD axle. The axle looked good on the outside, but it was pretty gross inside. We used a Yukon Gear and Axle master overhaul kit, and a Hardcore Diff cover. There are not many good options for a Dana 70 HD, so we welded up the spider gears and made our own locker, a Lincoln Locker! Finally to save some weight and increase braking power/efficiency, the drum brakes were converted to a disc brakes.

    Switching to disc is nice. 70 Lbs of unsprung weight reduction is nice. The stopping power and better looks are excellent too! Nice work and video.

I want to Bob the tail on my project but I only weld thick metals for now but with a lil more time I think I will be able to do it and make it look good.

However, if you're ever worried about a weld holding, put some heat into the part before starting an arc on it. Even just 300° will go a long way for that little welder. On ColoradoK5.com, my 4x4 groups site. We (back in the old days) 20 years ago, called welding the ol' 14 bolt rear's spider gears, we called it welding up the "Ball of Doom"
    As the spider gears when completely welded, resembled a ball. I don't remember anyone ever breaking one. So, there's that. Keep at it!

      Take a look at your ring gear, you should see a pair of numbers stamped on it separated by a dash. Divide the two numbers and you’ll find you gear ratio.
      Example 10-41 will be 2.43:1 ratio. 41-10 would be 4.10:1 ratio.

    It's nice to know it is possible to get the gears out without a case spreader. I just scored a 1999 Dana 70 out of a truck and I think it has a spool or something because both tires are locked solid and rotate the same direction. I only paid $200 for it and I am doing the disk brake conversion and I need to put 5.29 in to match my front. I'm so curious about pilling the diff cover off and seeing what's inside. He said the pinion seal was leaking and he wanted a Dana 80 so lucky me. I'm putting it in my 93 Toyota 4 Runner. This was the 1st video on this that did it with a case spreader, did you find it hard to get the gears in? It looked like they went right in? Cool video.

    • @RecklessWrenchGarage
      @RecklessWrenchGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Before you get too excited, you might want to double check gear availability. To my knowledge, there is no selection of gears between 5.13 and 5.86 available for the d70.
      I was planning on getting 5.38, but it’s not an option.
      I have removed/installed the diff in this axle a hand full of times now. Without the spreader it take a little more effort, but still doable. There are a number of tricks you can try in order to remove it.

    I got a question, I'm assuming this was a dually at one point, did you just use the same hubs? And the disk conversion, I'm assuming that was specific for a dually due to the bend angle?

    • @RecklessWrenchGarage

      @@RecklessWrenchGarage I have the DRW d70 and it has the gigantic wheel studs. I have a SRW d70u, and am trying to find out if I can swap hubs from one to the other. I know the axle length would be off, but I plan on running chrome shafts in both..
      My plan is to take the 30spline d60 out of my 81 crewcab. replace it with the 32spline d70u, and put dually hubs and wheels on it. then use the DRW d70axle in my jeep project. I already have an artec truss for the 70, and is a bit different fit on the 70u. I had also thought about the d80 spool from ECGS, but its a bit spendy.

    • @RecklessWrenchGarage
      @RecklessWrenchGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The axle lengths would not change if you change the hub. The mounting surface for the axles remain in the same place, only the wheel mounting flange location changes.
      I don’t remember how the 70u carrier differs from the 70hd, but in my case, the spool was the cheapest of all the options, except welding. There may be other options for the 70u.

    Looking out your garage looks a whole lot like base housing on a military base.

    and drums have more stopping surface then disc. so they stop better when working correctly. that's why semis still use them on the rears

    • @motoXcR
      @motoXcR 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      you coulndt be more wrong, semis use air brakes and drums can engage when the air fails...simple as that..theres not one performance vehicle in the world that uses drums...and semis would be light as a feather if technology woild allow it...you probably think anti-freeze freezes before water too...

    I thought the HD was a 10 lug axle? not an 8 lug. or am I just thinking of the chevy 3500hd trucks

    • @RecklessWrenchGarage
      @RecklessWrenchGarage  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t know of a Dana 70hd ever being 10 lug. My C30 has an 8 lug 70hd as well.

      RecklessWrenchGarage maybe I'm thinking of the late 90s model chevys the 3500hd had 10lug rear axles. they was also Dana 70 or maybe it was an 80 I cants remember lol

      Motor home 70s are usually 10 lug.

    Why the dana 70? Why not the 14 bolt?

    • @RecklessWrenchGarage
      @RecklessWrenchGarage  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because the person I traded with had a d60 and d70hd. I also wasn’t ready to dive into shaving a 14b at the time I did the swap.

    Maybe i missed something but what you do for parking brake? And there is no proper way to weld a diff. The process itself is improper.

    • @RecklessWrenchGarage
      @RecklessWrenchGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn’t have a parking brake at the moment. There is a manual line lock, but it will be replaced with a hydraulic hand brake later.

    A 3/4 ton 14 bolt would of been more ideal for locker options, and it would roll right in.

      I am aware of that; however, the deal that came up was a 60 and 70, so that’s what was used.

    ALWAYS USE LOCTITE ON THE RING GEAR BOLTS. TODAUS METALS ARE NOT WHAT THEY USED TO BE AND RING GEAR BOLTS WILL WORK LOSE IF NOT LOCTITE-ED. TRUST ME.
