  • I had 20 minutes in between trams tonight so I pulled out of the mobile phone and filmed some trams in Collins St at William St in the Melbourne CBD around 730pm. Yarra Trams Routes featured are 11, 12, 48 and 109. The 3 classes of trams you see are typical trams for Collins St services.
    The high floor single car Comeng A class tram for routes 12, 48 and 109. The Alstom Citadis C1 low floor tram for routes 48 and 109. The Bombardier Flexity E1 and E2 class trams for route 11.
    Filmed 28th June 2019 Collins St.
    Filmed in HD.

      Not in the near future as that is an Essendon line and I very rarely drive it.

    A lot has changed in the last couple of years. Route 11 used to have a lot of B classes, which are now at other depots with the route pretty much 100% E classes.

    Some nice footage of the trams at night. Gives a different feel to during the day. Night filming of the trams after a rainy day is great too with all the nice reflections on the ground.
    It's nice to see the C Class on video too, I know they get a bad wrap and aren't super popular, but I like them. But it could be a combination of the fact that I remember way back when they were first being introduced in around 2001 sometime, they were on test for free along the 96 for a little while and I rode one up and back on the whole of the route and I found them super cool because there was nothing like them back before then so they have that special feel to me. That and they are a pretty rare sight for me seeing as I never travel along any of their routes so I guess it makes it exciting when I actually see one, haha.
    I like that you got one of the A Class with new gong too, it's actually pretty good to see how loud it is in everyday situations. Seems like they are pretty good even from a distance and it doesn't sound too bad.
    Speaking of gongs, I recently did some filming of the C class trams in the city and they seem oddly inconsistent in volume with their gongs, some are fairly loud and others I could barely hear, even at a short distance. Are they all different or is it just an illusion of them sounding different/much quieter somehow?
    My filming was not the greatest though, but I had some fun just getting out and about filming the trams.
    Anyway, I do tend to go on a bit sometimes, haha. Thanks for sharing another great video Brenden, that was a fantastic idea while filling time👍👍

    Just wondering Brenden, do you think E Classes will spread across other routes other than the current ones at any point seeing as there are, at this rate going to be 100 of them by the end of the current order? I wonder because I notice that the route 109 C Class trams get packed pretty quickly even in the middle of the day. I wonder if at any point a busy route like that will get higher capacity trams or whether there are plans for another class of tram after the E Class. Interestingly, I also had heard and read information from Citadis that the C Class trams are designed so that they are easily and cheaply lengthened with more modules if needed, so I also wonder if we could just have 5 section C1's later down the track if we needed more capacity. I know that the Luas trams in Ireland had been significantly lengthened and they are very similar to our C class trams too.
    Would love to know if you know of any plans or ideas for that situation at all or what you think about it?

      They have to spread across other lines as there will be too many trams. I'm not sure what is next. They don't tell us everything!

      Ah cool, thanks Brenden 👍 I thought they would have to spread them around at some point. 100 trams is a lot for just the 3 routes, I believe, they currently run on.
      Aw, it's a pity they don't give anything away, it'd be really great to know what the plans are for the future in trams. At least all our old reliable trams are getting life extension work so that is fantastic of course 👍

    2:08 Why does E2-2056 have an E1 cab window front?

    • @Jake_B17
      @Jake_B17 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was involved in a car accident

    • @Schony747
      @Schony747  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      6042 donated that cab to 6056. It must have been fixable and was used to replace the cab on 6056. Others like 6029 and 6019 have an E1 cab on one end and E2 on the other.

    Have l hear correctly that all B class trams are going to finish up?

    • @Schony747
      @Schony747  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      B2 trams are undergoing life extension to give another 10 years. The B2 tram is pretty well gone from Preston Depot which will now operate a fleet of E class trams only on route 11 and 86

      Aw, only 10 more years for the B Class Brenden? I will never be able to experience the joy and dream of driving a B Class. By the time I get around to getting a driver's licence just to be able to drive a tram they'd be gone. It's a pity the rules changed on getting to drive trams, if I could drive them without a drivers licence I'd apply tomorrow 😄😄🚊🔔🔔 B Class = Best Class😄
      I never understood how W Class trams can survive so long and yet the "newer" ones like A, B and to a lesser extent the Z are going to be gotten rid of even though they all function great and after life extensions are effectively almost as good as new again. Seems such a shame to be planning to get rid of something so good. Especially with nowhere near enough new trams to cover such a vast amount of A,B and Z Class. I am hoping that they all have a long life ahead of them still. Just add a new low floor section to B Class later down the line and you get the added bonuses of low floor access and capacity. I have seen it done before in a similar style tram in a country in Europe I can't quite remember and it seems to work great. Those trams were apparently close to end of life and afterwards effectively were done up to basically a new tram. I just wish I could remember where it was. Kind of looks like if they stuck a Combino section in the middle of a B Class. If I can find the video I will add it in the comment.
      Edit: found the trams I was talking about here: th-cam.com/video/VyYjRN8mm-U/w-d-xo.html
      It's in Belgium, I believe it is called The Belgian Coast Tram.
